Top 10 Video Game Inspired Movies

ratchet-clank-RATCHET-CLANK_onesheet_rgb (691x1024)

From Rainmaker Entertainment and Blockade Entertainment, RATCHET & CLANK is a CG-animated movie based on the iconic PlayStation video game.

Two unlikely heroes struggle to stop a vile alien named Chairman Drek from destroying every planet in the Solana Galaxy. Ratchet is the last of his kind, a foolhardy “lombax” who has grown up alone on a backwater planet with no family of his own. Clank is a pint-sized robot with more brains than brawn. When the two stumble upon a dangerous weapon capable of destroying entire planets, they must join forces with a team of colorful heroes called The Galactic Rangers in order to save the galaxy. Along the way, they will learn about heroism, friendship, and the importance of discovering one’s own identity.

The film features the voicecast of Paul Giamatti, John Goodman, Bella Thorne, Rosario Dawson, Jim Ward, James Arnold Taylor, David Kaye, Armin Shimerman, and Sylvester Stallone.

With the release of RATCHET & CLANK in theatres nationwide on Friday and THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE on May 20th, WAMG takes a look at our favorite movies based off of video games.

HONORABLE MENTION: RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE in 3D

The fourth installment of the hugely successful RESIDENT EVIL franchise, RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE is again based on the wildly popular video game series, and was shown in cinemas in 3-D.

HONORABLE MENTION 2: PIXELS

As kids in the 1980s, Sam Brenner (Adam Sandler), Will Cooper (Kevin James), Ludlow Lamonsoff (Josh Gad), and Eddie “The Fire Blaster” Plant (Peter Dinklage) saved the world thousands of times – at 25 cents a game in the video arcades. Now, they’re going to have to do it for real. In Pixels, when intergalactic aliens discover video feeds of classic arcade games and misinterpret them as a declaration of war, they attack the Earth, using the video games as the models for their assaults – and now-U.S. President Cooper must call on his old-school arcade friends to save the world from being destroyed by PAC-MAN, Donkey Kong, Galaga, Centipede, and Space Invaders. Joining them is Lt. Col. Violet Van Patten (Michelle Monaghan), a specialist supplying the arcaders with unique weapons to fight the aliens.

10. SUPER MARIO BROS.

Is it award winning? No. Is it entertaining, fun and incredibly cheesy? Hell-to-the-YES! Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo play the classic NES Kings Mario and Luigi who are on a mission to save the Princess from King Koopa. Sure, it’s not the most believable movie ever made, but neither is the video game. Two plumbers fighting mushroom looking guys and killer turtles to save a princess??? Don’t think we’ve heard this on the local news in a while! Take it for what it’s worth… a comical flick made about a nostalgic game.

09. POKEMON THE FIRST MOVIE

Aka MewTwo’s Counterattack, POKEMON THE FIRST MOVIE was the first theatrical release in the POKEMON franchise. Pokemon was unbelievably popular when the film was released in 1999 and it was a box office hit worldwide. Any parent of a kid at the time can attest to this phenomenon seeing as we had Pokemon trading cards, games, and anime videos all over the place. Pikachu along with the Pokémon – Bulbasaur, Charizard, Squirtle, Pidgeotto, Geodude, Onix, Vulpix, Zubat, Staryu, Goldeen, Psyduck, and Togepi – and their human trainers, Ash Ketchum, Misty and Brock brave a storm while enroute to an island to battle for the title of “World’s Greatest Pokémon Master.” First released in 1996 in Japan for the Game Boy, kids and adults alike were enamoured by the magical powers of the Poke-balls and battles of the Pokemon vs the villains.

08. LARA CROFT TOMB RAIDER: THE CRADLE OF LIFE

Angelina Jolie is back as the vixen of video games in the second installment of the Tomb Raider franchise. We cannot think of a single actress that could have fulfilled the idolized role of Lara Croft better. Let’s face it, Lara Croft is a gamers wet dream! In the search for Pandora’s Box, which is found to really exist in this installment, Croft is on a mission to keep a billionaire villain from obtaining the container, which could wipe out civilization as we know it. That’s a big job… which means a ton of action and adventure!

07. DOOM

Dwayne Johnson is just plain likeable. Although this film has been dubbed by gamers as “Resident Evil in space”, this film has plenty of action and adventure to go around. They could have taken a little more of a horror angle rather than just action, but the film still lives up to the shooting game. Plus, they included the zombies. We like zombies.

06. RESIDENT EVIL

Alice is the reason that we are all here, on this fun filled Top Ten journey. The first of four films, Milla Jovovich dives in as the heroine Alice, who is turned into an experiment after “the virus” takes over. Jovovich is mesmerizing in this film, and certainly takes charge with her action scenes. We really enjoyed watching her fight off the evil dogs… and man, does red dress sees some serious bloodshed!

05. MORTAL KOMBAT

We were actually quite shocked to hear that they were making a Mortal Kombat movie back in the day, but we think they did a pretty good job of taking a standard fighting game with no real story line and turning it into a movie. It’s not a fantastic movie, but we are comparing it strictly against other video game movies, and this one does a decent job. For an arcade game turned movie, they made an entertaining adaptation.

04. RESIDENT EVIL: EXTINCTION

Alice is back, in my favorite to date installment of the Resident Evil franchise. She is on her own, but joins other survivors in the Nevada desert to take down the Umbrella Corporation. The scenery and colors in this film are stunning. Although we think we would cry if Las Vegas was actually destroyed, it was a cool backdrop for the action. Alice kicks some serious “undead” ass!

03. FINAL FANTASY: THE SPIRIT WITHIN

This is the only one on our list that is not live-action. Although this movie failed at the box office, the film itself is a futuristic adventure. This was not exactly what die-hard FF fans were looking for, but it did well with sci-fi fans. Plus, the animation is stunning.

02. SILENT HILL

If you like crazy creatures, than this is the film for you. Silent Hill is jam packed with gore and some pretty impressive animation. Sure, some parts are a little drawn out, but the scenes and creatures were almost identical to the ones in the game. This is probably the closest movie made in comparison to the video game that is is based on. They even get the weird camera angles right!

01. LARA CROFT: TOMB RAIDER

And WAMG crowns as their #1 Best Video Game Movie none other than Angelina Jolie’s high-flying LARA CROFT: TOMB RAIDER. From 2001, video game adventurer Lara Croft comes to life in the movie where she races against time to recover powerful ancient artifacts before the bad guys can. With Jolie as the mythic Croft, this hardcore fighter literally comes alive on the screen and this exciting adaptation is definitely aligned to the Tomb Raider video game series. While some critics thought it silly goofiness, we gamers didn’t think so and TOMB RAIDER became a huge box office success.

Video: DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK Q&A With Guillermo del Toro, Katie Holmes, Bailee Madison & Director Troy Nixey

For you horror fans out there who can’t wait until the August 26th release, watch this conversation with Guillermo del Toro, director Troy Nixey, and stars Katie Holmes and Bailee Madison from FilmDistrict/Miramax’s DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK. Warning: the video below contains MAJOR spoilers.

Produced by Guillermo Del Toro and Mark Johnson, the film stars Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce, Bailee Madison and Jack Thompson and marks the directorial debut of Troy Nixey. DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK is a remake of a 1973 TV movie bearing the same title, considered by Del Toro to be among the scariest ever made. The film was co-written by Del Toro and Matthew Robbins.

DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK follows Sally (Bailee Madison), a young girl who moves to Rhode Island to live with her father (Guy Pearce) and his new girlfriend (Katie Holmes) in the 19th-century mansion they are restoring. Having stumbled upon the mansion’s hidden basement, Sally starts hearing voices calling out from the bolted ash pit, imploring her to open it. Sally obliges and unwittingly unleashes something so terrible, so unthinkable, that everyone’s life – hers most of all – is placed in immediate and grave danger.

Watch STUCK LIKE CHUCK for FREE Starting August 17th

Although I don’t get to contribute nearly as much as I’d like to, I have been a part of WAMG for almost 3 years now. During that time, one film that I always liked to talk about was STUCK LIKE CHUCK and the reason why is simple. It is an awesome film… and I also happen to be the writer & director. In the past, I’ve posted stories about new trailers and festival screenings. Our very own Travis Keune even wrote a fantastic (and non-biased) review that you can read RIGHT HERE. But this news is much bigger.

I’m very excited to let you all know that starting August 17th, STUCK LIKE CHUCK will be available to watch for free. Free streaming. Free download. FREE. It will launch on StuckLikeChuck.com but the player is embeddable so hopefully it will pop up on websites and blogs all over.

To celebrate the free release, on August 17th I will host 3 separate “live-tweets” of the film. Just start watching the film at 8 PM, 10 PM or Midnight EST & tweet about it using #LiveChuck. You can also just tweet me anytime (@GetStuck) and I’m usually pretty good about responding.

Since no future DVD or Blu-Ray release is planned, I will also be releasing nearly 10 hours of bonus features. This includes a version of the film with audio commentary from myself and Nic Baisley from FilmSnobbery.com, an 88 minute fly on the wall behind the scenes documentary, the original 2 hour rough cut of the film, over 30 minutes of deleted scenes and much more. In order to access all these extras, just make a donation of $1 or more on StuckLikeChuck.com starting August 17th.

Check out our newest teaser trailer below to see what you can expect in less than two weeks…

So who’s excited?

Dan Fogler talks TAKE ME HOME TONIGHT!

TAKE ME HOME TONIGHT just came out on DVD & Blu-Ray today so it is the perfect time to share the rest of my hilarious interview with Mr. Dan Fogler.

(You can view part one HERE)

This may be one of my favorite interview videos that I’ve done with Dan. We talk about TMHT, promoting with Topher Grace & how much fun it was creating the awesomely eighties music video for Atomic Tom’s cover of Don’t You Want Me. Dan also challenges Topher Grace to a Marty McFly-off!

Check out the interview below!

And just in case you haven’t seen the music video yet, here it is…

So who do you think does the better Marty McFly?

Tribeca 2011 Interview: Abigail Breslin & Alessandro Nivola

On Tuesday I had the pleasure of sitting down with Abigail Breslin and Alessandro Nivola to discuss their new film, JANIE JONES. The film had its US premiere on Friday night at the Tribeca Film Festival. I saw an early cut of the film last week and really enjoyed it. (Review HERE)

Sometimes arriving early to a press event has its rewards. Prior to the interview, I had the chance to watch Abigail Breslin perform a quick acoustic song for a few people. I never would have guessed that she is still learning to play. As I said in Tuesday’s daily recap, she is insanely talented in everything she does. Alessandro joked that she made a deal with the devil and that would honestly explain a lot.

Here is a video of our full interview. The only thing trimmed from it is when a bee decided to invade as we were about to begin. We talk about JANIE JONES, crying on cue, Jordan Creek Mall and even ZOMBIELAND 2. Enjoy!

Tribeca 2011 Interview: Rider & Shiloh Strong

My favorite short film of the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival was a dark comedy called THE DUNGEON MASTER. Apparently it was your favorite as well because it won Best Short from the Tribeca (Online) Film Festival. Earlier this week I had the opportunity to sit down with Rider & Shiloh Strong to talk about the film, which they wrote and directed. I want to thank them for taking the time to speak with me and also for signing some Tribeca program guides, which we are giving away right HERE.

Below is a video of our full interview, in which we talk about making the film, Dungeons & Dragons, social media, embarrassing childhood magic shows and more. Enjoy!

BONUS VIDEO

Before the interview, I talked with Rider & Shiloh about a short film I made a few years ago that was also D & D inspired. It shares a similar theme with DUNGEON MASTER but their film is far better in every possible way. It was filmed in one afternoon for a contest so please forgive the terrible acting and low production values. Enjoy!
