Wahlberg In The Ring For THE FIGHTER

The New York Times had an interesting story on David O. Russell’s THE FIGHTER starring Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, Amy Adams and Melissa Leo. Many oscar pundits see the film receiving more than a few nominations with its mid-December 2010 release.

During the St. Louis premiere of THE OTHER GUYS earlier this month, Wahlberg briefly talked to WAMG’s Melissa Howland about his upcoming film.

Here are excerpts from the NYT article:

THE FIGHTER has those elements, plus Christian Bale, and the extraordinary passion of Mark Wahlberg, who started training almost four years ago for the lead role as the real-life boxer Micky Ward.

But the movie still had to survive a grueling behind-the-scenes struggle before landing on the schedule at Paramount Pictures, which plans to release it on Dec. 10, as the awards season hits full stride.

Wahlberg fought hard to get THE FIGHTER made. “Many times I thought it wasn’t going to happen,” said Mr. Wahlberg, who spoke by telephone last week.

Mr. Wahlberg, who spent several years waking before dawn to work on his physical conditioning, recalled thinking, “If I don’t get this movie done the way I want to, I’m going to use this training on somebody in a bad way.”

Rob Moore, Paramount’s vice chairman, acknowledged that his studio had been wary of THE FIGHTER, which promises to become Mr. Russell’s first major release since his I HEART HUCKABEES fizzled for Fox Searchlight Pictures in 2004.

THE FIGHTER is a biopic that follows the ups and downs of a come-from-behind welterweight and his half-brother, and like a lot of adult-oriented dramas, “ultimately, these are tougher movies,” Mr. Moore said. “They’re all about execution.”

Mr. Wahlberg noted, struggle is nothing new when it comes to the story of Mr. Ward and Dick Ecklund, both of whom were written off more than once before Mr. Ward’s triumph, in 2000, in a junior welterweight title fight that figures in the film. “These are guys who against all odds achieved their goals and realized their dream,” Mr. Wahlberg said. “It wasn’t supposed to happen.”

Have a look at a few scenes from the set of THE FIGHTER due in theaters on December 10, 2010. It will be a packed weekend at the theaters with the release of THE FIGHTER, the Johnny Depp/Angelina Jolie thriller THE TOURIST, and the third installment in the Chronicles of Narnia series, THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER.

WAMG Interview: DAN FOGLER

I recently had the chance to spend some time with Dan Fogler (BALLS OF FURY, FANBOYS) at his home to discuss some of his upcoming projects. We mainly talked about M’LARKY, which is his new web series on Atom.com. 4 episodes are now online but if you haven’t seen it yet, here is a brief description:

Jon M’larky is a renegade cop who partners up with Chicago Cubbs, a man torn with revenge over the death of his cousin Gel Roy, to take down the worlds most notorious drug lord Toblerone.

Click below for video of our very informal interview where Dan talks about the show, its origin and his thoughts on producing for the web. He even breaks out a few impressions, including Pacino and Schwarzenegger.

Dan Fogler is Full of M’LARKY

Last Tuesday night I went to Bar 13 for a preview of Atom.com’s newest original web series, M’LARKY. Dan Fogler (BALLS OF FURY, FANBOYS) created the series, which he also stars in along with Josh Warren, TJ Hassan, Jeffrey Ross, Gilbert Gottfried, and Ariel Shafir. Here is the plot according to the official Facebook page:

Jon M’larky is a renegade cop who partners up with Chicago Cubbs, a man torn with revenge over the death of his cousin Gel Roy, to take down the worlds most notorious drug lord Toblerone. Produced by Studio 13.

This description does not do the show justice because it is far more insane. The show is a barrage of hilarious and over the top homages to classic cop movies and TV shows told through green screen action, video game footage and one-liners. The storyline is extremely loose but that is only to fit as many jokes and slapstick action as possible in each episode, which only run a few minutes.

Similar to Fogler’s directorial debut, the equally insane horror comedy HYSTERICAL PSYCHO, it is easy to tell that a lot of fun was had on set while making this show. Not only does it come through on the screen but Dan had a huge grin whenever talking about M’LARKY. I’ll be posting a full interview soon but for now check out the first two episodes of M’LARKY at www.Mlarky.com.

And if you want a chance to win some stuff by watching the show, enter this contest from Atom.com: http://www.atom.com/blog/2010/05/19/win-a-prize-mlarky-has-a-case-for-you-to-crack

Full Disclosure: I am friends with Dan Fogler and producer Thomas Sullivan but that doesn’t alter my opinion of the show. It’s a damn fun web series.

Casey Affleck Speaks Out About Joaquin Phoenix

What happened to Joaquin Phoenix? That’s a question lots of people have asked, and whether you feel he’s has a real change in his life or if this is merely a gigantic publicity stunt, one thing is for sure… Phoenix has been a little weird lately.

Now, Casey Affleck has spoken out about the last year of Joaquin Phoenix’s life and the “documentary” that he has made of that year of the former actor, now turned rapper. The film is called I’M STILL HERE: THE LOST YEAR OF JOAQUIN PHOENIX and is currently looking for distribution.

Anyone who watches TV is surely aware of Phoenix’s most recognizable moment of weirdness lately, when he appeared bearded and shaded on the LATE SHOW with David Letterman. It was one of those “What the… this can’t be for real” moments.

Well, according to early reports from west coast sources who’ve seen the film and the interview with Casey Affleck on ABC News Now’s Popcorn with Peter Travers, the film contains some things that may just make you believe, without a shadow of a doubt, that I’M STILL HERE is either a BORAT-style mockumentary, or else Joaquin Phoenix truly has blown a fuse.
