RUN THE TIDE – Review

run-the-tide

Review by Zach Nix

Taylor Lautner, much like previous teen idol Zac Efron, is a young male actor who became a star after appearing in a string of films marketed towards teens, specifically the Twilight franchise. However, and much like Efron, Lautner’s impenetrable stardom eventually ended with his franchise’s conclusion. Therefore, he then began that awkward transitional period as he tried to escape from the teen idol status that he had been labeled with in order to prove his legitimacy as an actor outside of the Twilight saga. His short lived stints with action (i.e. Abduction, Tracers) and comedy (i.e. Grown Ups 2, The Ridiculous 6) certainly didn’t help. However, Lautner’s latest turn in director Soham Mehta’s debut film, Run the Tide, finally showcases him as a dramatic talent to be reckoned with.

The tale of Mehta’s independent family drama has been done in many variations before, but it’s a tried and true story of bonding and forgiveness that is always engaging when done correctly. Reymund (Taylor Lautner) and his younger brother Oliver (newcomer Nicos Christou) live on their own separate from their imprisoned mother, Lola (Constance Zimmer). While Oliver misses his mom, Reymund detests her, as she used to abuse both her children and drugs, even sporadically abandoning them during most of their youth. However, Lola’s time to be released from prison finally comes, and with that arises the film’s central conflict. Lola wants to take back Oliver now that she’s reformed, but Reymund won’t stand for it, haven not forgiven his mother for all of the hurt that she has caused over the years. Therefore, Reymund takes his brother and goes on the road in search of a peace away from his disparate family.

Run the Tide is admirably small town and realistic, especially in its depiction of broken and lower class families. Screenwriter Rajiv Shah weaves themes of forgiveness and coming of age through his tale of a struggling family whom must learn to ‘run the tide,’ as the title suggests, and learn to get along with one another despite their past transgressions. Every central character arcs or develops in a convincing matter, especially Reymund, whose arc is arguably the most central and crucial of the picture. With a realized script made up of convincing characters, backed by strong performances, Run the Tide has the makings of a stupendous independent drama.

Unfortunately, the stylistic handling of the material is where Run the Tide somewhat flounders. While attention to character is clear, it seems that Mehta lacks an understanding of proper pacing, as his film chugs along at a slow pace, tending to meander on moments or scenes that could be cut far shorter. This could also be an issue with the film’s editing, as the decision to focus on a scene or sequence for too long could have easily been fixed in the editing room. The content that fulfills the film is engaging, it’s just simply not conveyed as effectively as it could have been. Stylistic flaws aside, Run the Tide lives and dies on its performances, to which there are several stand outs.

I always knew that Lautner could be a solid actor if given the right material or taken seriously, as it’s clear that Run the Tide is his finest work to date. When not relied upon for his comedic chops or muscular looks, Lautner proves to be a competent actor who conveys desperation, frustration, and determination within his character very convincingly. Let’s hope that future directors catch a hold of Lautner’s work here, because he has all the makings of a comeback if given the proper projects.

Lautner is also to be praised for his chemistry with standouts Nicos Christou and Johanna Braddy. Reliable child actors are hard to come by in cinema, as they tend to be annoying in all honesty. However, Christou is especially compelling as Lautner’s younger brother, as he explodes off of the screen thanks to his commitment to the part and convincing performance. Age and experience is not even a matter once you see Christou on screen, as he is that fantastic a performer. Attention is also to be given to Braddy as Lautner’s love interest, as the two have a fantastic chemistry with one another as a doomed couple whose temporary romance rings harsh but affective. Their interactions and story add another layer of complexity to a film that is already about so much more.

All in all, Run the Tide is a solid debut for its director and the best showcase of Lautner’s acting abilities to date. It’s clear that each can go on to greater things if they learn to play their cards right. Although Mehta has a lot to learn about the strengths of pacing and editing, his debut makes for a fine feature that showcases his attention to character. And Lautner, who was once the teen idol of his generation, could easily go on to bigger and greater things if given the chance after delivering the goods here. Here’s to hoping that each of these stalwart players in cinema use Run the Tide as a stepping stone in sure long lasting careers in which they could easily get better and better with time and experience.

THE TWILIGHT SAGA : BREAKING DAWN – Part 2 – The Blu Review

twilight 2

In the final installment of THE TWILIGHT SAGA, Bella has opened her eyes to a whole new world. A vampire world. She is finally immortal, and can spend forever with her beloved Edward… or so she thinks. Although she is finally an immortal, as promised to the Voltouri, their daughter Renesmee is seen as an immortal child, which is forbidden. The Cullen family is now on a race to prove that Renesmee is the child of Bella and Edward, and that she poses no threat to any of the clans… otherwise, the Voltouri will destroy them all.

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART 2 proved to be the best film in the series. Although it took a risk, and deviated from the book, I think the film did a great job in wrapping up the immortal love story. The film does have its mix of silly, and even ridiculous flaws, but what do you expect? If we have learned anything from the other four films, it’s not to expect a serious movie.

To read my full review of the film itself click HERE.

Audio: English: DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 Spanish: Dolby Digital 5.1

The audio is crisp and rich. I honestly could not detect a single flaw. Between the soundtrack, the dialogue, and the added background noises, the audio is fantastically immersive and sharp.

Video:  Video codec: MPEG-4 AVC Video resolution: 1080p Original aspect ratio: 2.39:1

Just like THE TWILIGHT SAGA : BREAKING DAWN – PART 1 (since they were shot together), the film is a beautiful 1080p high-definition transfer. The film is clear and sharp. The beginning scene of Bella up-close looks phenomenal. Her skin looks natural and well-lit, rather than fake and touched up (like most films today). You can really feel a sense of depth when traveling through the wooded scenes with the Cullen clan. I am extremely impressed.

BLU-RAY & DVD SPECIAL FEATURES*

  • “Forever: Filming Breaking Dawn Part 2” – Seven-part “making of” documentary
    • Chapter 1: “Rebirth” : A quick look at Bella’s transformation from human to vampire. This segment breaks down the redevelopment of Bella’s character since she is no longer the clumsy, unsure girl that she once was.
    • Chapter 2: “Renesmee” : This segment is informative, but it still makes me angry. It’s showcases the casting of Mackenzie Foy as Renesmee. This part is endearing and quite enjoyable. The part that irritates me is when the delve into the special effects process that they used to show her character at various ages. They talk a bit about their choice to use special effects, rather than casting actors of various ages to play the part, but I still don’t agree with their decision. I’m not discrediting the talents of the effects artist. I’m sure their job was a huge challenge. Still, Renesmee looks creepy, and incredibly fake. It is my biggest complaint about the film . A real child would have benefitted the story more. Poor Mackenzie Foy was animated the majority of the film. It is a huge distraction to the story.
    • Chapter 3: “The Cottage” : This segment not only goes into the design of Bella and Edwards new cottage, it also examines the making of the highly anticipated sex scene. So… you might not want to skip this one. Just saying.
    • Chapter 4: “The Gathering” : An introduction to the new vampires in the film.
    • Chapter 5: “The Field” : Footage from shooting on the green screen set, and how the cast adapted to being on the closed set.
    • Chapter 6: “The Battle” : Ahh… the final battle. This focuses on the final decisions of the film.
    • Chapter 7: “Forever” : A really nice final touch about the film franchise.
  • “Two Movies at Once” featurette : This featurette gives us a look into the challenges of filming both movies at the same time… as well as some benefits.
  •  “The Forgotten” Green Day music video : This is weird to me. Green Day and Twilight do not go together. I like to imagine my Green Day to still be a bit too “rock & roll” to ever be involved in THE TWILIGHT SAGA. I love sushi and milkshakes… but that doesn’t mean I want to blend the two together!
  • “Jump to” features : Alas! Twi-Hards can now watch all of Edwards scenes, or Jacobs, without being distracted by scenes that they are not in. Skip to the meat and potatoes of your favorite character, and let the droolfest begin… and without interruption. The only difference is the scenes are shown in a 1.78:1 ratio, rather than the incredible 2.39:1 widescreen aspect. The sound also suffers a bit, dropping to Dolby Digital 2.0.
  • Audio commentary with director Bill Condon: This is some of the more thorough commentary that I have ever heard. Director Bill Condon talks about everything from the performances of the cast to the technical side of things. This is a must for any true Twi-Hard.

If you are a fan of the series, THE TWILIGHT SAGA : BREAKING DAWN – PART 2 is a must for your collection. The abundance of bonus features, along with the incredible audio, and first-rate visual transfer make this Blu-Ray a must for any Twi-Hard!

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART 2 – The Review

We all knew that this tale had to finally come to an end, but not even the hardest of Twi-Hards knew that it would end like this!

SPOILER ALERT! You have been warned.

The film jumps right in, pacing itself rather nicely. I don’t really think they had much of a choice with that, considering BREAKING DAWN – PART 1 spent the entire film focusing on Bella and Edwards sex life, and the pregnancy/birth of Renesmee. In an ideal world, the two films would have given a little more room for us to get to know Renesmee, and build on the relationship between Bella and her daughter. As someone who has read the books, I realized halfway through the film that I felt like I understood their relationship because I had the back story of the books rather than feeling it build throughout the movie. I mean, rather than staging an arm wrestling contest with Emmett, they could have focused more on building Renesmee’s character. Although… good lord! I see why they felt the need to put that scene in.

Kellan Lutz… your arms… I like that… good job…

Let’s talk about the pink elephant in the room, or, should I say the freakishly horrible computer generated child?! Whose idea was that? Who brought that idea to the table? A real child would have benefitted the story more. Poor Mackenzie Foy, who plays Renesmee, was animated the majority of the film. I understand that the character grows fast, but subbing siblings of various ages, or searching for a few children that looked incredibly similar would have been a much better choice. It was distracting from the story. Still, it got down right creepy when they showed a grown up version of Renesmee standing with Jacob. They used computers to take a little girl of 11, who resembles a child of around 7 years old, and place her in a scene as a grown up with Jacob, who has imprinted on her. Obviously, nothing happens in the scene, but the whole thing doesn’t feel right. Despite the horrible CGI, which has never been their strong suit, the film took one risk that really paid off. They deviated from the book and added a fight scene.

Now, I am going to try to speak about this without giving anything away, but I did say spoiler alert above, so take this as your second, and final warning. There is no fight scene in the book. Jane (a member of the Voltouri) goes on the attack, as does Alec (again, Voltouri) , but that it pretty much it. Bella’s shield (which is her special vampire power) protects everyone, but in the movie they have limited it to Edward, and a bit to Alice. I will spare you with the minor details of the stand-off, because at the end of the day, they aren’t very important. What’s important is that they threw in this massive twist, that none of us expected, and it really paid off. It brought the film to a whole new level, and despite Aro having the scariest reaction to meeting a child that I have ever seen (or heard), the fight scene had the entire audience on the edge of their seats. When there is an established fandom, such as with the TWILIGHT books, it’s very easy to upset them when you deviate from the original tale that they have grown to love. There is an attachment to it, a feeling of ownership, of being part of the journey alongside the characters… When you mess with the content, it can cause chaos. Having said that, I did not hear a single complaint from the Twi-Hards in the theater, or in the lobby last night. I only heard rave reviews and excited shock over the added twist. Also, I don’t think the films are serious enough to pull off an ending like the one in the book. The films have a campy subtext that doesn’t seem fitting of a quieter, more refined ending. The chaos is just what the film version needed.

At the end of the day I am happy with the final product. I’d say that the films have really come a long way, but it would be more accurate to give this one the most improved player award. The film tied up any loose ends, and gave the audience the satisfaction of a complete journey. That, along with the included homage to all of the characters (not just those in the last film), really helped end things on a pleasant note.

FilmNation Entertainment will introduce the action thriller TRACERS to international buyers at the Cannes Film Festival. From the producers of Twilight and Dear John, TRACERS will star Taylor Lautner (The Twilight SagaAbduction) and will be directed by Daniel Benmayor (Bruc, the Manhunt). Marty Bowen and Wyck Godfrey of Temple Hill Entertainment will produce. WME will handle sales in the US.

At Cannes, FilmNation Entertainment is also handling international sales on THE BLING RING from director Sofia Coppola. In addition, FilmNation has two in-competition titles: LAWLESS from director John Hillcoat starring Shia LaBeouf and Tom Hardy; and Jeff Nichols’ MUD which is also produced by FilmNation’s Aaron Ryder, starring Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon.

One of the leading independent international sales & distribution and production companies in the world, FilmNation Entertainment was founded in 2008 by veteran international sales executive Glen Basner.

In February of 2006, veteran producer Wyck Godfrey and former United Talent Agency partner Marty Bowen created their own production company, Temple Hill Entertainment. They secured a deal with New Line Cinema and immediately entered into production on their first film, THE NATIVITY STORY, from director Catherine Hardwicke. The modestly-budgeted Christmas-themed movie went on to gross almost $40 million dollars domestically in December of 2006.

Next, the two went on to produce the Sidney Kimmel Entertainment-financed, romantic comedy, MANAGEMENT, starring Jennifer Aniston and Steve Zahn, which premiered at the 2008 Toronto Film Festival and went into wide release in May 2009. What followed was nothing short of a pop cultural phenomenon: production of Catherine Hardwicke-directed fantasy love story, TWILIGHT, based on the best-selling series of books by Stephanie Meyer. The film opened on November 21st from Summit Entertainment to a record-breaking $69.6 million opening weekend-and attracted a huge cult following. THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART 1 (Special Edition) – The Blu Review

Hello there are you Twi-Hards and non Twi-Hards, it’s your old pal Melissa here with another Blu-Ray Review! THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART 1 is officially in stores, which means you can take your favorite werewolf and vampire home with you. That being said, I am still not 100% sold on this installment. Confused? It’s ok… I will explain.

In THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART 1 Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson) are walking down the aisle to solidify their love. On their honeymoon, which is quite the real honeymoon, Bella becomes pregnant, which they did not think possible with Edward being immortal and all. Now, with an unknown fetus sucking the life out of Bella, and the Quileute tribe plotting to destroy Bella and the foreign life inside of her, Edward and Jacob Taylor Lautner must team up to save Bella once again. Edward, trying to convince Bella to get rid of the life that might destroy her, and Jacob, rebelling against his tribe to save the girl he will never fully have.

THE MOVIE:

I really tried to give this film a second chance to officially “WOW me” this time, and I can say that my mind has still not changed. As  much as I love the story, and for the most part I enjoyed the movie (on a superficial, girly, I can’t believe I fall for this crap level), it was horrible at parts. Is it just me, or was the acting even worse than the other three films… especially Ashley Greene as Alice. She just didn’t seem to fit, and was overacting when others weren’t. It was very strange to watch. Also, there are a couple of really goofy camera angles at the beginning that reminded me of a student film project rather than a major Hollywood film, and not in a good way.

I have made no secret that I think that when the Quileute turn into their wolf state, it looks awful. This was even worse to me the second time that I watched it! The dialog between the wolves is terrible! This was, by far, the worst part of the film. At least the wigs were better this time around.

Still, Kristen Stewart played her best Bella performance to date, and if you are a sucker for a good love story then you will enjoy this film.

You can read my full review HERE

THE BLU-RAY:

Audio: English: DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 Spanish: Dolby Digital 5.1

The film sounds terrific. Simply put, this movie sounds crisp and clear.

Video:  Video codec: MPEG-4 AVC Video resolution: 1080p Original aspect ratio: 2.39:1

The transition from big screen to home theater is stunning. The Blu-Ray really delivers as far as picture quality. The lines are sharp, and the colors are stunning.

BONUS FEATURES:

6 PART MAKING OF DOCUMENTARY: Fans will LOVE this!!! The entire cast participates as they go through details of filming Part 1. It takes us through the making of Bella’s dress and how they kept it secret, the wedding, and about some of their special wedding guests. It’s a must for any Twilight fan.

EDWARD AND BELLA’S WEDDING VIDEO: This is just a funny little extra that shows the cast wishing the new couple well.

JACOB’S DESTINY: This little feature shows the growth of Jacob as he transforms from boy to wolf. See, there is something for you Jacob fans as well.

Commentary with Director Bill Condon: I think it was a bad move to only have the director do the commentary on this one. This is Twilight. The fans want to hear the actors. I found him rather fascinating, and Condon does offer a few nice bits of trivia, but I think that most fans are going to be a bit disappointed.

Where are the deleted scenes? Maybe some extended scenes, alternate scenes, or even a gag reel? I understand that they are probably saving these for a final release, but it’s starting to get pretty disappointing when the bonus features keep getting cut down so you’ll fork over more money on a re-release of the movie, or a super deluxe edition.

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART 1 – The Review

As a fan of the Twilight series books, THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN – PART 1 was enjoyable, yet awful! Confused? It’s ok… You’re old pal Melissa will explain.

I have made no secret that I think that when the Quileute turn into their wolf state, that it looks awful. This time, they took it one step further by letting us actually hear the dialog between them as they spoke to one another in wolf form. This was, by far, the worst part of the film. I can’t even begin to tell you how absolutely awful it was!!! Fake, tacky CGI wolves speaking to each other in horrible voice over… UGH! At least the wigs were better this time around.

Now that we have started with the bad news, let’s move on to the positive portion of my review. If you are a sucker (no pun intended) like I am for old school romance, you will still enjoy this film. There is something about the way that Edward loves Bella that is classic and timeless. He’s not texting her to ask her out, or meeting her up at a bar and calling it a date… he is a gentleman. That is few and far between these days.

Kristen Stewart actually impressed me this time. She seemed a bit off as Bella in the past few films, but this one… she really fell into character and I was impressed. Robert Pattinson plays Edward the same as he always has, and he really does it well. Taylor Lautner has gotten better as Jacob, and is really growing as an actor. Having said that, I am kind of getting sick of his emo moments where he gets upset and storms off. It’s not SHOWGIRLS people!

They ended PART 1 right where I thought they would. This story concentrates on the marriage and birth of their baby. For those of you that have read the books, you know what is in store for PART 2, and ending this one where they did leaves plenty of room to concentrate on the final parts of the last book. It was a wise decision.

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN -PART 1 will leave fans of the films and books happy. If you are not a fan then I am sorry, you will most likely not enjoy this!
