TERMINATOR GENISYS – The Review

Terminator-Genisys-Motion-Poster

TERMINATOR GENISYS is an ambitious attempt at revitalizing a series that many critics say has gone steadily downhill since the third film. Now five films and two television seasons deep, an argument could be made to whether there is enough story to carry a series of films. But buried within the fifth film is a clever concept of looking at the original two films in a new light while planting the seed for future sequels. How that initial idea evolved into this overworked and stupidly complex story shows that writers Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier either got in way over their heads or have not a clue as to why the first two films work so well in the way that they do. Sure, the film is about humans fighting robots and that alone should be “cool,” but TERMINATOR was once more than that. GENISYS can’t understand that, but even at a pure summer movie level, it can’t make an entertaining human vs. robot popcorn flick.

Even though the series technically exists in the science fiction genre, I’d argue that what these films are really about is anything but. Time travel and Judgment Day have always been background noise to universal themes, but given the direction of the fifth film and what I can assume of the already announced upcoming sequels, is now clearly the driving force for the series. The first TERMINATOR film is a stalk-and-slash horror film with a genuine love story that proves love is so strong that it can travel across time. TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY shows a lost and out of control boy looking for direction and ends up finding it in the form of a machine that becomes a father figure – it’s a father and son bonding film. Considering director Alan Taylor and the studios behind GENISYS are ignoring TERMINATOR 3: RISE OF THE MACHINE and TERMINATOR SALVATION, I’m not even going to address those films. The fifth film struggles to find a reason to exist compared to previous entries other than just to keep the franchise alive so that studio executives can make money off fan nostalgia.

GENISYS rides the coattails of famous scenes from the series for most of the beginning. After an initial voice-over by Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) bringing new viewers up to speed abut how a renegade computer program turned against the humans, we flash forward to the year 2029 and see Reese serve as a soldier under the guidance of John Connor (Jason Clarke). The humans successfully take down Skynet, but not before the machines send a killing machine into the past through the use of a time machine to kill the mother of resistance leader John Connor. Reese voluntaries to go back to 1984 to stop the T-800 (yes, this should sound familiar), but when he encounters Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) she isn’t what he expected. In fact, all of the events of the “original” timeline are disrupted due to some sort of loose particles or some reason or another that is casually thrown out in a quick manner that is just as quickly forgotten.

Emilia-Clarke-Terminator-Genisys-Gun

In the new timeline Sarah is not alone. She’s accompanied by a guardian T-800 that she nicknames “Pops” (Arnold Schwarzenegger). Just as what happened in T-2: JUDGEMENT DAY, a T-1000 attempts to stop Reese from keeping Connor alive but new changes rear their head. The trio soon realizes that due to the changes in the timeline that they now have to travel to 2017 to stop an Apple-esque computer program called Genisys from being uploaded to a Cloud-like system over the world – a program that will eventually trigger Judgment Day.

Once you get past all of the fan service that is piled on at the onset of GENISYS, what’s left is a couple of miscast actors struggling to work with an overly dense screenplay. Jai Courtney and Emilia Clarke pale in comparison to their character’s original cinematic counterpoints. Emilia Clarke tends to exaggerate her macho persona in a way that becomes quickly aggravating. Her attempt at capturing the rebel spirit of Linda Hamilton in T-2 feels completely forced. Courtney on the other hand lacks any hint of charisma. How he has infiltrated Hollywood as a leading man is beyond me given how robotic and emotionless he comes across.

The only actor that seems right at home is Ahhnold! Sure, some of his jokes don’t entirely work, but he’s clearly having fun in the role that recalls his robot with a heart of gold turn in T-2. Even Arnold’s overly cheeky lines that many of the trailers have advertised work much better in the context of the film. GENISYS proves that Arnold still has it. As the one recurring joke reminds us, “He’s old, but not obsolete.”

TERMINATOR 2 ushered in a new era of technological achievement seen on film. It was the first film to use an actor to motion capture a computer generated character – the results continue to inspire film special effects to this day. Seeing the T-1000 get shot by bullet after bullet and revitalize himself right in front of your eyes is something we hadn’t seen before. TERMINATOR GENISYS takes that iconic special effect and replays it over and over again through cheap CGI with not just a new version of the T-1000 but with a new Terminator hybrid as well (whose powers and technology are never fully explained but look like the material used in the kid’s toy where you add magnetic mustaches to faces). The idea of him being an unstoppable killing machine is still the motivating factor here, but its presence is overstated which causes the threatening aspect to dissipate. Instead it just adds to the overuse of cheap CGI effects that director Alan Taylor relies on way too often (including a horribly ugly and preposterous helicopter chase that leads up to the finale). One could play a drinking game to how many times you see a bullet hole slowly heal itself in slow-motion on the new machines and will most likely cry “Judgment Day!” and give-up before the film even ends.

Critics and fans will be quick to point out that the trailers and poster ruin a critical plot point that happens about two-thirds the way through the film. Yes, it’s a shame that that reveal has to be ruined by marketing in order to get people excited about a cool new twist in the TERMINATOR mythology. This is especially true because some of the earlier scenes lose some of their meaningful impact due to the knowledge of this reveal, but that’s hardly the main issue with the film. Even if we could travel through time and change the studio’s decision to market this major spoiler, fixing that won’t help the fact that the main problem lies within the very point of the film.

Going back into time and looking at existing events or in this case existing films isn’t enough to get by these days. Nostalgia can carry a film only so far before it becomes too weak to stand on its own. GENISYS has no strong Endoskeleton at its core. Hearing familiar names like John Connor, Sarah Connor, and Kyle Reese, but seeing them with new faces isn’t enough to hold my interest. Convoluting an already ridiculous time travel plot point from the original film is exactly what the film builds its entire foundation on. Then, in ways I didn’t even think was possible, they convolute and lay even more cinematic paradoxes upon it to the point that you have to just throw your hands in the air and give up. The problem is though, once you stop trying to connect the dots and the different timelines, there isn’t much left to care about. You’re stuck with two severely miscast actors running through time, trying to stop the future from killer robots. What bizarre future-world do we live in that a seemingly cool premise like this should be so tedious? Sadly it’s not the future… it’s the present.

DRIVE ANGRY 3D Trailer

Another Nic Cage film is on the horizon, and this time in 3D, thanks to Summit Entertainment. Have a look at the trailer for DRIVE ANGRY.

Synopsis:

In the newest 3D action-adventure from the director of MY BLOODY VALENTINE, DRIVE ANGRY 3D stars Nicolas Cage as Milton, a hardened felon who has broken out of hell for one last chance at redemption. Intent on stopping a vicious cult who murdered his daughter, he has three days to stop them before they sacrifice her baby beneath a full moon.

He’s joined by Piper (Amber Heard) — a young, sexy waitress who liberates her ex-boyfriend’s cherry-red muscle car in order to help Milton. Now, the two of them are hot on the trail of the deadly leader of the cult, Jonah King (Billy Burke), who believes it is his destiny to use the baby to unleash hell on earth.

But the bloodthirsty cult is the least of Milton’s problems. The police are after him too. And worse, an enigmatic killer known only as “The Accountant” — who has been sent by the Devil to retrieve Milton and deliver him back to hell. With wicked cunning and hypnotic savagery, the Accountant will relentlessly pursue Milton at high speed across the country until his mission is accomplished.

Fueled by high octane and pure rage, Milton must use his anger to go beyond all human limits to avenge his daughter’s murder, before his last chance at redemption is revoked.

Weinsteins Stop Pre-Production on HALLOWEEN 3D

halloween 2

Just a week after Bob Weinstein announced he was “going back to do what he does best,” the Weinstein Company has made the announcement that ‘Halloween 3’ has been put on hold.   According to Nikki Finke’s Deadline Hollywood, the first draft of the screenplay came in last Friday with Weinstein rushing to get production begun by November.   This had to be done by January so that director Patrick Lussier could make the switch to the Nicolas Cage vehicle, ‘Drive Angry.’   This, evidently, caused Bob to rethink how quickly the project was rushing, and, thus, he made the call to postpone production until after ‘Drive Angry’ wrapped so that Lussier could take his time with it.   This was also confirmed by Shock Till You Drop.

All in all, this is a good decision, as work on this project seemed to be coming down at a break-neck pace, something that shouldn’t be happening with any project, let alone a 3D production.

According to STYD, Lussier says they had a small window of opportunity to begin production, and everyone agreed that it would be better to hold off and work through it after ‘Drive Angry’ rather than pushing to get it done before.

No new start date has been set for ‘Halloween 3,’ but that isn’t stopping the Weinsteins from trying to make money off the franchise.   Rob Zombie’s ‘Halloween II,’ while not a rousing success at the box office, did manage to pull in $32 million against a $15-million budget.   This total will grow even more, as they are re-releasing the film to select theaters for midnight showings beginning on Halloween.

‘Halloween 3D’ gets it’s director

patrickh3d

Rob Zombie is out… Patrick Lussier is in. The ‘My Bloody Valentine 3D’ director has signed on to direct the next installment of ‘Halloween’ which will pickup where Zombie’s ‘H2’ left off. However this time we are going to see a 3D Michael Myers for the extra scary effect. We get this from Empire:

Some reports last week put Steve Miner (Friday the 13th parts 2 and 3, Halloween H20) behind the camera, but that always seemed spurious. Lussier makes more sense, having been working with Dimension in one capacity or another forever, editing the Scream series and directing the DTV Dracula films. Most recently he was behind My Bloody Valentine, so he has the 3D skills to pay the bills.

So it seems as if Rob Zombie really isn’t going to be involved anymore, but if you remember back they did something very similar with ‘H2’ before Zombie signed back on. We will have to wait and see boys and girls.

Dark Castle Set for ‘I Saw What You Did’ Remake

i-saw-what-you-did

Dark Castle has had a long track record for remaking horror movies. Â  Their remakes range from pretty good (‘House on Haunted Hill’) to pretty awful (‘Thirteen Ghosts’). Â  The latest film they are set to remake is ‘I Saw What You Did.’ Â  The original film was directed by William Castle, the master of gimmick horror, and the remake will be written by Patrick Lussier (‘My Bloody Valentine’) and Todd Farmer. Â  Lussier is set to direct.

The ’65 original starred Joan Crawford. Â  It centered around a couple of girls who pass the time making prank phone calls. Â  Of course, they end up calling the wrong guy.

As with all Dark Castle projects, Joel Silver will be producing through Warner Brothers.

Lionsgate Shooting Down ‘My Bloody Valentine 3D’ Sequel, says Director

my-bloody-valentine1

Director Patrick Lussier, speaking at the Fangoria Weekend of Horrors in LA, said this past weekend that Lionsgate has no interest in putting together a sequel to ‘My Bloody Valentine 3D.’

According to Lussier, the studio was surprised at the film’s success at the box office, but doesn’t want to develop a follow-up and would prefer to leave the film as a one-shot.   Lussier’s film, released on January 16th, has made $71.8 million worldwide off of a $15 million budget.

Just days after ‘My Bloody Valentine 3D’ came out, Lussier and writer Todd Farmer mentioned to Chud.com that they had mapped out a continuation of the film.   Perhaps Lussier and Farmer can shop the idea for a sequel around Hollywood, but there’s no telling what Lionsgate will make of this if the sequel ideas actually get bites.   We’ll keep you posted.

What do you think?   Should a sequel to ‘My Bloody Valentine 3D’ get made?   Is Lionsgate making the right decision in keeping the film as a one-shot?   Let us know by commenting below!

Lussier and Farmer Already Planning ‘My Bloody Valentine 2’

Patrick Lussier, the director behind ‘My Bloody Valentine 3D’, sat down with Chud.com last week in promotion for the film. Â  In the interview, he commented on what could be planned for a potential sequel.

Here’s a segment from that interview:

One of the other things I like about this film is that – without spoiling it – you leave a legitimate sequel opening at the end. You don’t end it in a way that you’ll have to figure out a trick or a cheat to have a Part 2. Are you going to be coming back for the sequel?

If the movie takes off, Todd (Farmer) and I have mapped out a whole continuing adventures.

One of the things you mentioned about the film is the mystery, and by the end of the movie the mystery is solved, so –

Oh no, we have figured out a way of injecting several twists and turns in the continuing adventure. Even though the mystery is solved there are still things to learn and things to know and things that are unexpected and reversals of fortune that happens to those who survive. We had great fun doing it because if you’re going to do it, you don’t want to retread what you’ve just done – you want to take it in a new direction. But at the same time, you want to do all those things people have fun with. And the mystery is one of those things and, you’re right – how do you have a mystery when you already know the answer? Well, we’ve figured out a way.

Sounds promising. Â  With a 4-day total of $24.2 million, it looks like the potential of a sequel is definitely getting better.

What do you think? Â  Did you see ‘My Bloody Valentine 3D’ yet? Â  What are your thoughts on a sequel if you did? Â  Remember, try to keep it spoiler-free in the comments, folk, but, by all means, let us know what you think by commenting below!

Patrick Lussier is the new director for the 80’s classic know as My Bloody Valentine. The new remake is from   the Lionsgate Pictures which has been known to take on classic and new horror pictures. Now something special about this new movie is that when it comes out in January 16th of 2009 in will be in 3D.  Supernatural’s Jensen Ackles will star as Tom, a man returning home on the tenth anniversary of the Valentine’s massacre that left 22 dead. Upon his return he realises he still has feelings for his old flame Sarah (Jaime King), but she’s now married to Axel (Kerr Smith). Then the murders start again†¦Ã‚  I have never watched this movie but I personally I’m really looking foward to seeing this new movie.
