The original MY BLOODY VALENTINE, the most classic of ‘80s Canadian horrorshows, has it all: creative deaths, overt melodrama, boiled hearts, Moosehead beer and Coal Mining!

mybloodyValentine-Killer-in-Coal-Mine

A small mining town in Canada has become famous over the years after a maniacal ex-miner went on a killing spree in the early sixties. He was the only survivor from a fatal accident on Valentine’s night that stole the lives of numerous workers and left him having to survive by feeding on the corpses of his colleagues. Harry Warden murdered the supervisors that he considered responsible for the tragedy and stuffed their hearts into candy boxes to remind the townsfolk that their incompetence should never be forgiven. Twenty years later and the town is preparing for its first Valentine’s dance since the gruesome massacre, but it seems that it is not only the decorations and romantic spirit that has returned. As a mutilated heart is sent to the local Sheriff with a gruesome warning that there will be more murders, it seems apparent that Harry Warden has come back once again….

MY BLOODY VALENTINE can lay claim to arguably the best arsenal of marketable gimmicks ever to be included in an ‘80s splatter feature and if the authentic calendar date doesn’t induce your interest, then it’s impossible to resist the excellent guise for the maniacal killer and the creepy mine location. The gas mask adds an extra dimension to the killer’s essential-clichéd heavy breath and the pickaxe makes for an exquisite tool for gory slaughter. You can almost visualize director’s George Mihalka’s smile upon witnessing for the first time the awesome sight of his bogeyman strolling through the dimly-lighted shaft and stalking his intended victims. In terms of slasher visualizations, it’s pure poetry-in-motion and Mihalka understandably milks the possibilities.Don’t miss it when MY BLOODY VALENTINE screens midnights this weekend at The Moolah.

Could ‘Saw’ Go 3D?

With the success of ‘My Bloody Valentine 3D’, you just knew it was a matter of time before more horror flicks got released in 3D. Â  The first, in what I’m sure will be a long line of horror franchises, to mull about the idea is ‘Saw’.

At a sold-out screening in Los Angeles for ‘Repo!’, the producers expressed their interest in taking the franchise to the 3D realm. Â  This probably won’t happen for ‘Saw VI’, but it may just get put into the inevitable ‘Saw VII’.

Again, this is just a few producers who are mulling around an idea. Â  Nothing is definite. Â  However, rest assured that the age of 3D horror has officially begun.

Lussier and Farmer Already Planning ‘My Bloody Valentine 2’

Patrick Lussier, the director behind ‘My Bloody Valentine 3D’, sat down with Chud.com last week in promotion for the film. Â  In the interview, he commented on what could be planned for a potential sequel.

Here’s a segment from that interview:

One of the other things I like about this film is that – without spoiling it – you leave a legitimate sequel opening at the end. You don’t end it in a way that you’ll have to figure out a trick or a cheat to have a Part 2. Are you going to be coming back for the sequel?

If the movie takes off, Todd (Farmer) and I have mapped out a whole continuing adventures.

One of the things you mentioned about the film is the mystery, and by the end of the movie the mystery is solved, so –

Oh no, we have figured out a way of injecting several twists and turns in the continuing adventure. Even though the mystery is solved there are still things to learn and things to know and things that are unexpected and reversals of fortune that happens to those who survive. We had great fun doing it because if you’re going to do it, you don’t want to retread what you’ve just done – you want to take it in a new direction. But at the same time, you want to do all those things people have fun with. And the mystery is one of those things and, you’re right – how do you have a mystery when you already know the answer? Well, we’ve figured out a way.

Sounds promising. Â  With a 4-day total of $24.2 million, it looks like the potential of a sequel is definitely getting better.

What do you think? Â  Did you see ‘My Bloody Valentine 3D’ yet? Â  What are your thoughts on a sequel if you did? Â  Remember, try to keep it spoiler-free in the comments, folk, but, by all means, let us know what you think by commenting below!

Review: ‘My Bloody Valentine 3-D’

Jeremy:

Horror fans rejoice!   The blood-soaked sensibilities of the slasher films of the ’80s and the state-of-the-art technology of modern filmmaking have finally collided.   ‘My Bloody Valentine 3D’ is the latest movie to be churned out by the Hollywood remake machine, and it wears its rehashed badge like a medal of honor.   It’s an unabashed gorefest that quite literally throws everything at its audience.   Body parts.   Blood.   Gratuitous nudity.   All the trimmings that made the ’80s slasher films such financial successes are found here, and they’ve all been updated in glossy, innovative fashion.

The story is really secondary to all the stylized bloodshed.   Someone dressed up as a miner is throwing pickaxes into people’s heads left and right.   Who is the killer?   Is it the young man who returns home after years of being absent?   Is it the young sheriff who has a less than amicable temperament? Is it the man who dressed up as a miner ten years prior, killed dozens of teenagers, and was believed to have been killed by the police?   Once you see the first eyeball flying at you, you really lose interest as to who the killer is and just sit back and enjoy the ride.

With movies like ‘My Bloody Valentine 3D’, the cardinal rule is to never be boring.   ‘My Bloody Valentine 3D’ never even threatens with slowing down.   In the film’s first 15 minutes, we get a whole feature film worth of story.   It’s almost jarring how quickly the killings start.   The story then jumps ahead 10 years to slow down and let us get used to some of these characters before they get pickaxed, as well.   You can tell the people involved with the film (director Patrick Lussier and screenwriters Todd Farmer and Zane Smith) really love their horror.

It’s not available in 100% of the theaters ‘My Bloody Valentine’ is playing in, but you should really make an effort to see it in 3D if you’re going to see it at all.   The film takes the gimmick and flaunts it like it won it in a contest.   When you see the bullets, tree limbs, and body parts flying at the screen in 2D, the only thing you think is how cool it must have looked in 3D.

Lussier and crew never miss an opportunity to throw something at the screen, either.   There are even some creative mirror and window effects used, even though most of the gory gags in 3D have been done time and time again.   It doesn’t make it any less fun, though.   The core audience for this film are people too young to have seen ‘Friday the 13th 3’ in theaters, so the flying eyeball gag doesn’t seem as recycled as it actually is.   The special effects are pretty blatant CG, but the enthusiasm with which they are used covers the poor quality fairly well.

The film even offers up some surprisingly genuine scares.   Most of the thrills found in ‘My Bloody Valentine 3D’ are of the jump-out-at-you variety.   There’s very little in the way of creepiness or prolonged suspense, but the people behind this know their horror.   They know when the right moments are get their audience.   There are even times in the film where typical horror filmmaking has told us something is about to jump at us but nothing does.   It’s always satisfying to see an audience jump and scream at absolutely nothing.

All the acting is above average.   Most of the cast is made up of the pretty people you find in this type of film any more, but most of them also serve up decent performances.   Jensen Ackles, Jaime King, and Kerr Smith all do fine.   Smaller roles are given a lot of weight by actors like Kevin Tighe and Ed Gathegi.   After a long time away from the big screen, it’s great to see the reappearance of Tom Atkins, an actor whose name in the opening credits actually drew a round of applause from the showing I was at.

In the age of horror remakes, it’s always refreshing to see one whose execution transcends any conventionality it may incorporate.   ‘My Bloody Valentine 3D’ is a movie that knows exactly what its purpose is, and it never tries to be anything more.   Never embarrassed by the gore it throws at us, it’s a film that fans of the genre will be eating up.   You know full well whether or not you are the kind of person who would enjoy something like ‘My Bloody Valentine 3D’.   If you do, than you are sure to have a great time watching people get shredded through and ducking every time a pickax gets thrown at your head.

[Overall: 4 stars out of 5]

‘My Bloody Valentine 3D’ comes out January 16th.

Is Lionsgate in Financial Trouble?

This past Tuesday investment bank Caris & Co downgraded shares in Lionsgate stock from “buy” to “above average”. Â  The reasoning? Â  The less than desirable opening for ‘The Spirit’, which pulled in only $10.4 million over the Christmas weekend. Â  As of January 4th, it had made an estimated $17.7 million domestic.

This comes hot off the heels of another Lionsgate flop, ‘Punisher: War Zone’, which made $8.8 million worldwide, had an estimated budget of $35 million, and was pulled from theaters faster than ludicrous speed.

“Explanation for the weakness came primarily from a smattering of negative reviews, coupled with heavy competition from ‘Marley & Me’, which opened with a stellar $37.0 million in gross receipts,” Caris analyst David Miller said in a message to clients.

Miller went on to say that the future health of Lionsgate might well be tied to the release of ‘My Bloody Valentine 3D’ which opens on January 16th. Â

Lionsgate’s co-chief operating officer Joe Drake said in a New York Times interview about ‘My Bloody Valentine 3D’, “We see 3-D horror as financially lucrative and creatively exciting. We want to break some new ground here in R-rated fare.”

Lionsgate might be able to hold out until ‘Saw VI’, scheduled for release next October. Â  Unfortunately, that franchise might be slipping financially, as ‘Saw V’ ended up being the worst performer in the series since the first one in 2004. Â  Still, ‘Saw V’ made $103 millions worldwide off a $10.8 million budget.

What do you think? Â  Is Lionsgate in financial trouble? Â  Will ‘My Bloody Valentine 3D’ make as much as they expect? Â  Is ludicrous speed really that fast? Â  Let us know by commenting below!

‘My Bloody Valentine’ Not 3D On All Screens

We know that the perfect date movie this coming January is gonna be to take your girl, go to the theater, buy some hot popcorn, put on a pair of 3D glasses, and watch a pickaxe wielding miner take out some annoying teenagers. Â  Well, there’s one step in that equation that you may wanna check up on before running out to your local theater.

‘My Bloody Valentine’ will not be running in 3D on all screens. Â  I know that this is kind of a no-brainer, but we here at We Are Movie Geeks feel we should warn you beforehand. Â  A recent article ran in the New York Times about the verging element of seeing your favorite horror films in 3D. Â  In the article, they mention ‘My Bloody Valentine’, but they also mention the film will only be showing in 3D on about 900. Â  The lack of theaters equipped to project the film in 3D will leave another 1600 screens that will show the film in 2D.

If you want a 3D Jensen Ackles, just be sure to check with your theater before running out and buying your ticket.

My Bloody Valentine in 3D

Patrick Lussier is the new director for the 80’s classic know as My Bloody Valentine. The new remake is from   the Lionsgate Pictures which has been known to take on classic and new horror pictures. Now something special about this new movie is that when it comes out in January 16th of 2009 in will be in 3D.  Supernatural’s Jensen Ackles will star as Tom, a man returning home on the tenth anniversary of the Valentine’s massacre that left 22 dead. Upon his return he realises he still has feelings for his old flame Sarah (Jaime King), but she’s now married to Axel (Kerr Smith). Then the murders start again†¦Ã‚  I have never watched this movie but I personally I’m really looking foward to seeing this new movie.
