SHE SAID – Review

Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan star in the engrossing true-story drama SHE SAID, which throws a spotlight on the two New York Times women journalists whose investigation helped spark the “Me Too” movement.

SHE SAID evokes the classic ALL THE PRESIDENTS MEN but this surprisingly kinetic, compellingly watchable investigative journalism drama at times feels a bit like a tense mystery-thriller. The film keeps the two investigative journalists, Jodi Kantor (Zoe Kazan) and Megan Twohey (Carey Mulligan), at the center of the story but it also gives a remarkably realistic picture of how journalism is done. SHE SAID’s storytelling highlights the importance of investigative journalism itself, the kind of reporting that uncovers wrongdoing and starts the process to hold the guilty responsible, the kind of vitally-important journalism in a democracy that is most at risk of being lost in the current news industry crisis.

Director Maria Schrader crafts a firecracker of a drama, one that is surprisingly restless and kinetic as well as deeply involving. SHE SAID is based on the New York Times investigation by reporters Jodi Kantor, Megan Twohey and Rebecca Corbett, and Kantor and Twohey’s book “She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement.” Patricia Clarkson plays editor Rebecca Corbett, managing the story from the newsroom, but the major focus is on the pair of investigative reporters pounding the pavement.

Carey Mulligan, who was so powerful in A PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN, plays Megan Twohey, a hard-hitting seasoned journalist who also gives birth while working on this ground-breaking story. She shares this investigation with another, less experienced New Times journalist, Jodi Kantor (Zoe Kazan). At first, the story does not look like something groundbreaking, as the two work on an investigation into work-place sexual harassment in larger corporations, but a tip shifts the focus to a new industry. With its liberal reputation, the journalists are surprised by the tip about harassment and abuse in the movie industry, and the trail quickly points to one person in particular, powerful producer Harvey Weinstein.

Others had tried and failed to break this story over the years, not just about this one man but others as well, but had hit a wall of silence that shut things down. There were lots of stories and rumors about Weinstein but frustratingly no one who wants to go on record or even name names. As Kantor and Twohey dig deeper, they go down a rabbit hole of leads that uncovers a hidden network of cover-ups, secrecy and fear, that soon sparks a paranoid feeling of being watched by a shadowy, powerful and well-connected force.

Carey Mulligan, who was so remarkable in A PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN, plays Megan Twohey, a hard-hitting New Times journalist who starts this investigation shortly before giving birth and rejoins it on returning to work. It is the kind of personal, refreshingly real, slice of life detail that gives depth to both characters. Twohey shares this investigation with Jodi Kantor (Zoe Kazan), a less-seasoned journalist and a woman who is already a parent, giving a nice personal counter-balance to their professional relationship. We are used to seeing Kazan in more comedic roles in films like THE BIG SICK but she does very well here in this more serious part, where she creates a character who is driven in her work but warm on a personal level.

As the two journalists, peel back the layers concealing the abuse, SHE SAID builds suspense, with the reporters hit barrier after barrier and tracking down leads that seem to go to dead ends. This well-written drama crafts a strikingly realistic picture of how journalism is actually done, but it also takes us into these reporters’ private lives, giving us warm glimpses into their family lives and painting a portrait of striving for work/life balance.

Rather than a drama that unfolds mostly in the newsroom, as we might expect, director Maria Schrader and screenwriter Rebecca Lenkiewicz open up the story by sending the two reporters out into the streets and into the homes of sources and possible abuse victims. The two women are often headed in divergent directions, which creates a restlessness and kinetic sense, with Twohey and Kantor frequently in motion, racing place to place, even country to country as they pursue the story. That restless energy is thanks in part to excellent editing but also the director’s choice in how she presents the work of these two hard-working women journalists. The camera follows them as they walk and travel, periodically bringing them back together to share findings or back to the newsroom to confer with editors about next steps.

This collaborative partnership between the tough, more experienced Twohey and the eager, newer reporter Kantor is one of the delights of the film, and Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan are wonderful together. The script balances their professional relationship with scenes of home life for both, as they care for children and as Twohey struggles with post-partum depression.

As the journalists follow their leads, the biggest challenge is the lack of sources willing to go on record. They hear chilling stories but tying names to events is hard. Time and again, a new lead ends with a person gagged by a non-disclosure agreement or just fear of professional suicide. Lurking behind it, increasingly, is a single figure, one name.

Editors Rebecca Corbett (Patricia Clarkson) and Dean Baquet (Andre Braugher) provide strong support and guidance, even approving funds to travel to distant places. Andre Braugher’s Baquet provides advice on dealing with Harvey Weinstein in particular, someone with whom he has had dealings, which leads to some intriguing scenes where he speaks with him by phone or in person.

Director Schrader cleverly handles scenes with famous people, such as Weinstein and Donald Trump, by shooting actors playing them from behind. An exception is Ashley Judd, who plays herself, mirroring her role as a crucial voice in breaking this story and sparking the movement that followed.

But most of the people the reporters interview are not famous, and we are surprising time in again by familiar faces in some of these roles. Seeing these gifted actors, including Samantha Morton and Jennifer Ehle, adds a extra level of enjoyment and moments of surprise to this excellent film.

SHE SAID is top contender for awards. It is a compelling true story drama focused on both the two women whose dogged reporting blew open a long hidden secret, and the story they uncovered that helped launch a movement. In a way, the film itself is a triumph of exactly the kind of talented women being held down by the abuse the reporters revealed. SHE SAID is a brilliantly directed and written women-helmed film with a strong women-centric true story with outstanding, rounded female performances, making it both a story about women finding their voices and example of what women film-makers can accomplish.

SHE SAID opens Friday, Nov. 18, in theaters.

MARKET HOURS and OPERATION BARN OWL Premiere At “Life is Amazing” Lexus Short Films Series

DSCF3006

On Wednesday evening, The Weinstein Company and Lexus hosted the Los Angeles premiere of their 2nd Annual Lexus Short Film Series ‘Life Is Amazing’.

Those in attendance included Harvey Weinstein, Kristen Bell, Allison Janney, Ted Danson and many others. TWC and Lexus challenged two rising filmmakers to interpret “Life is Amazing” through short film. The result were MARKET HOURS (directed by Jon Goldman) and OPERATION BARN OWL (directed by Satsuki Okawa).

In MARKET HOURS, Randall spends his days imagining the vibrant inner lives of various vendors at the multicultural urban market where he works; none more so than Angela, an angel with her own pastry shop. But Randall’s inattention to his work has led to a string of thefts and soon threatens to cost him his job. A chance encounter with a beautiful starlet and her lapdog provides Randall not only an opportunity to break the ice with Angela, but a chance to prove his worth to everyone at the market – including himself.

In OPERATION BARN OWL, Ellen and her group of friends band together to help her best friend Jonah create a picturesque proposal for his girlfriend. Ellen, however, must overcome her feelings for Jonah and any past promises they made to each other for the proposal to go as planned.

Both were testaments to the fact that you can tell an entire story in a short film.

The two  filmmakers (Jon Goldman, Satsuki Okawa with script writer Ken Ochiai) are being mentored by members of the film community including actress Katie Holmes (The Giver, Wonder Boys) and directors Justin Chadwick (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, upcoming Tulip Fever), Simon Curtis (My Week With Marilyn, upcoming Woman in Gold), Antoine Fuqua (Brooklyn’s Finest, Training Day, upcoming Southpaw), and Phillip Noyce (The Giver, The Quiet American).

The group will also film featurettes that highlight the mentoring process as each talent meets with the up-and-coming directors and offers guidance and support. The pieces will also focus on the art of the short film, the evolution of the medium and its importance, and the growing global appetite for the format. The featurettes will be released leading up to the films’ theatrical run in Los Angeles and the worldwide release in October.

Paul McCartney’s “My Valentine” Short Film To Make Theatrical Debut At THE INTOUCHABLES Showings; Johnny Depp & Natalie Portman Star

In his directorial debut, Paul McCartney has created an artistic, black and white short film to his song “My Valentine” that audiences will get to enjoy before all showings of THE INTOUCHABLES for the duration of its theatrical run. The Weinstein Company (TWC) will release THE INTOUCHABLES in theaters on May 25. The three minute short film, which came to fruition following an original idea by Stella McCartney, stars Academy Award© winner Natalie Portman (BLACK SWAN, BEAUTIFUL GIRLS) and Golden Globe© winner Johnny Depp (FINDING NEVERLAND, CHOCOLAT). Portman, who was exclusively dressed by Stella McCartney for the film, and Depp translate the lyrics of the song through sign language throughout the film each with their own distinct interpretations, and Depp adds soul midway through the film with a guitar solo, which was recorded live:

Said TWC Co-Chairman Harvey Weinstein, “What an honor it is to have Paul’s short film directorial debut on the head of THE INTOUCHABLES showings. Paul and Stella are great old friends. He was the first musician to say yes to perform at the 9/11 concert for New York, which I produced along with our friendsJohn Sykes and Jim Dolan. Stella had a wonderful idea when she thought this song would translate well into a film, and I can’t wait to share it with our audiences when THE INTOUCHABLES comes out on May 25.”

On April 14 at an exclusive gala premiere at the Stella McCartney store in Los Angeles attended by Dave Grohl, Orlando Bloom, Lykke Li, Gwyneth Paltrow and Reese Witherspoon among others, McCartney premiered the short film. The track is one of two original compositions on his new studio album ‘Kisses on the Bottom’, which was released in February and went to Number One on the Billboard Jazz Chart as well as going Top Five across the world.

Produced by Susanne Preissler, the film’s cinematographer was Academy Award© winner Wally Pfister (INCEPTION, THE DARK KNIGHT), and it was edited by Paul Martinez. The film was shot on 35 mm film.

An irreverent, uplifting comedy about friendship, trust and human possibility, THE INTOUCHABLES has broken box office records in its native France and across Europe.  Based on a true story of friendship between a handicap millionaire (Francois Cluzet) and his street smart ex-con caretaker (Omar Sy), THE INTOUCHABLES depicts an unlikely camaraderie rooted in honesty and humor between two individuals who, on the surface, would seem to have nothing in common.  Directed Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache, the film was nominated for a total of nine 2012 Cesar Awards, France’s equivalent to the Oscars, including Best Picture, and winning Best Actor for breakout star Omar Sy, and won the Grand Prize at the 2011 Tokyo International Film Festival. The film has won multiple awards at film festivals around the country including: the ColCoa Film Festival’s Audience Award and Critics Special Prize; theFlorida Film Festival’s Audience Award for Best International Feature; the Wisconsin Film Festival’s Audience Award for Best Narrative Film; and the Nashville Film Festival’s Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature.

The Weinstein Company Acquires Fall-of-Gaddafi Political Doc THE OATH OF TOBRUK – Film To Screen At Cannes As Official Selection

The Weinstein Company announced today that they have acquired U.S. rights to political documentary THE OATH OF TOBRUK. The film, directed by renowned French philosopher, journalist and filmmaker Bernard-Henri Levy, was made over the eight-month period of conflict that put an end to Muammar Gaddafi’s reign in Libya. Levy documented the unfolding of the war and the spontaneous popular revolt that became a revolution through the efforts of the Libyan people in their country and in major cities including Paris, London and New York. The course of action taken by the Libyan people that was revealed in THE OATH OF TOBRUK exemplifies how ideas and convictions can change the course of history in the form of a political and humanitarian intervention that had otherwise seemed impossible. The announcement was made today by TWC Co-Chairman Harvey Weinstein, who fully supports the film and sees this acquisition as a political action that could provide hope for other countries in a similar state of peril including Syria.

On Friday, May 25, the Cannes Film Festival will present a special showing of the film, which is an Official Selection of the festival. Four key figures of the Libyan revolution, who have been invited by Levy, will attend the screening to dedicate their achievement in Libya to their Syrian friends.

Said Levy, “For me, Harvey Weinstein is not simply THE ARTIST. He is the producer who helped launch Amnesty International in the United States; the man who fought capital punishment with the weapon of cinema; and the one who defended Roman Polanski in the face of those who wished to lynch him. This Weinstein, I am happy to learn, is joining Studio 37 in the adventure of THE OATH OF TOBRUK.”

Said Weinstein, “This wonderful movie shows BHL’s incredible courage and the strength of former French president Nicolas Sarkozy, and also highlights the invaluable leadership from President Barack Obamaand Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. American audiences will get a behind-the-scenes glimpse of how our government and the French government worked together to stop the slaughter of innocent civilians and brilliantly handled the overthrow of a government.”

The film was produced by Studio 37, a financier of Academy Award© Best Picture winner THE ARTIST, Margo Cinema and Arte. Rezo is currently selling remaining territories.

Weinsteins Stop Pre-Production on HALLOWEEN 3D

halloween 2

Just a week after Bob Weinstein announced he was “going back to do what he does best,” the Weinstein Company has made the announcement that ‘Halloween 3’ has been put on hold.   According to Nikki Finke’s Deadline Hollywood, the first draft of the screenplay came in last Friday with Weinstein rushing to get production begun by November.   This had to be done by January so that director Patrick Lussier could make the switch to the Nicolas Cage vehicle, ‘Drive Angry.’   This, evidently, caused Bob to rethink how quickly the project was rushing, and, thus, he made the call to postpone production until after ‘Drive Angry’ wrapped so that Lussier could take his time with it.   This was also confirmed by Shock Till You Drop.

All in all, this is a good decision, as work on this project seemed to be coming down at a break-neck pace, something that shouldn’t be happening with any project, let alone a 3D production.

According to STYD, Lussier says they had a small window of opportunity to begin production, and everyone agreed that it would be better to hold off and work through it after ‘Drive Angry’ rather than pushing to get it done before.

No new start date has been set for ‘Halloween 3,’ but that isn’t stopping the Weinsteins from trying to make money off the franchise.   Rob Zombie’s ‘Halloween II,’ while not a rousing success at the box office, did manage to pull in $32 million against a $15-million budget.   This total will grow even more, as they are re-releasing the film to select theaters for midnight showings beginning on Halloween.
