WEEKLY BOX OFFICE WRAP January 7-9 2011

JANUARY 7-9th 2011

There was a lot of movement in the top ten films over the weekend with one significant accomplishment-TRUE GRIT lasso’ed itself into the number one spot bringing in $14,605,135 and horse kicked LITTLE FOCKERS into number two pulling in $13,487,245.

The surprise of the weekend was Relativity’s new release SEASON OF THE WITCH, starring Nicolas Cage, flying into the number three position with a decent showing of $10,612,375. It was released in 2,816 theaters with an average $3,769 per theater.

TRON: LEGACY was barely edged out of the spot, but only moved down to the number four slot.

Screen Gem’s COUNTRY STRONG strummed its way into number six by opening in 1,422 more theaters. Now with a 1,424 theater showing, it had the second highest per theater average of $5,145.

The number one highest grossing per theater average was THE KING’S SPEECH with $8,462 in 758 theaters. The unfortunate two movies finally making their journey out of the top ten were GULLIVER’S TRAVELS and THE CHRONICLES OF NARNINA:THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER.

The rest of the new releases for the weekend were in limited release, and none of them were even close to breaking the top ten. NO ONE KILLED JESSICA, a Bollywood film by director Raj Kumar Gupta raked in $227,473 in 48 theaters. PHIL OCHS:THERE BUT FOR FORTUNE, out of First Run studios and directed by Kenneth Bowser, made a mere $18,211 in one theater. An IFC release, THE TIME THAT REMAINS directed/starring/writer by Elia Suleiman, is a historic Israeli drama that was nominated for a Golden Palm at Cannes back in 2009. It brought in a simple $6,453 in the one theater it was released in. And the last of the new releases for the weekend is the Romanian film IF I WANT TO WHISTLE, I WHISTLE, directed by Florin Serban and released by Film Movement, was out in one theater and yielded $2,999.

Check out the changes in the top ten this week and see if you agree with the rest of the public. If not, read some of our reviews on the films and go see them. They are all movies worthy of a viewing, and some definitely before award season kicks off Sunday with the Golden Globes. Enjoy!

COUNTRY STRONG Singing Challenge Find Its St. Louis Winner, Sean Hileman!

It was a frigid Saturday afternoon (December 4th) at the Pro Bass Shop on St. Charles, MO, but spirits were high as many contestants competed for a spot in Country Music Television and Sony Pictures National Singing Challenge on behalf of the new film, COUNTRY STRONG, starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Tim McGraw.

Contestants were asked to sing a 60 second a Capella version of either the new hit song, COUNTRY STRONG or SILVER WINGS, with the winner receiving $500 and a chance to compete for a VIP trip to Nashville, a meeting with a Sony Music exec and a spot on CMT.

On hand were contest judges Mason and Remy from 93.7 the Bull’s Morning Show and Rich Dalton, Pro Bass Operations Manager.

Many singers showed up to belt out the songs and though nerves were high, everyone’s performances were Country Strong.

Click on thumbnail below for larger picture of each contestant.

The judges judged the performances based on the Judging Criteria (Execution, Style and Originality) and selected a Finalist and Runner-Up from Saturday’s event.

Ultimately Sean Hileman of Edwardsville, IL was chosen as the St. Louis finalist.

Employed as a concrete finisher and wedding singer, the Country Strong Challenge winner said he crammed for the contest as he only heard about it on the day before. After his victory, Hileman said, “I may not show it, but on the inside I’m screaming!”

Here’s the winner’s performance.

So ca’mon St. Louis, visit CMT’s site HERE, vote once a day and let’s send Sean Hileman to Nashville!

Head over to the site and *Watch the performances below and vote for who you think is best. Click on any of the thumbnails to watch the fullscreen video. To vote, click on the “Vote for this Video” button within the fullscreen video. Winner will be announced on Dec. 17*

COUNTRY STRONG Music Video

Here’s the video of the title song from Sony Pictures COUNTRY STRONG. Featuring clips of the film, along with Gwyneth Paltrow singing, the music video has been released right ahead of the soundtrack – available on October 25th.

So much like Sissy Spacek’s Academy-Award winning performance in the Loretta Lynn biopic, COAL MINER’S DAUGHTER. I suppose it’s the whole “coming back strong” modus operandi where I find the similarities.

Synopsis:

Paltrow plays Kelly Canter, a Nashville country singer fresh out of rehab following an arrest on charges of drunk and disorderly conduct. With the help of her husband and manager (THE BLIND SIDE’s Tim McGraw), Kelly plans to launch a comeback tour, during which she meets an undiscovered singer-songwriter (TRON: LEGACY’s Garrett Hedlund). But with problems still lurking (among them alcohol and Kelly’s cutesy opening act, played by “Gossip Girl” beauty Leighton Meester), the road to recovery proves to be a bumpy one for Kelly, and she must quickly learn what it means to truly be country strong.

COUNTRY STRONG will be in theaters in limited release on December 22, 2010 and then opens everywhere January 7, 2011. Check out the film’s official site here and visit it on Facebook.
