George A. Romero – “Between Night and Dawn” Coming on Blu-ray October 23rd from Arrow Video

There’s Always VanillaSeason of the Witch, and The Crazies, made between  Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, showcase the extraordinary versatility  and dynamism of this irreplaceable American auteur… Three films from the late,  legendary horror director, George A. Romero, showing that although he might  have defined zombie cinema, it didn’t define him. George A. Romero – “Between Night and Dawn” will be released  on Blu-ray October 23rd from Arrow Video

THERE’S ALWAYS VANILLA (1971)

Young drifter Chris and beautiful model Lynn embark upon a tumultuous relationship which seems doomed from the outset.

SEASON OF THE WITCH (1972)
Joan Mitchell is a bored housewife whose dissatisfaction with her humdrum life leads to an unhealthy interest in the occult.

THE CRAZIES (1973)

A small rural town finds itself in the grip of an infection which sends its hosts into a violent, homicidal frenzy

When George A. Romero passed away in July, the film world didn’t just lose its beloved ‘King of Zombies’, but also a groundbreaking and fearless innovator who inspired not only generations of genre directors, but also experimental and guerilla filmmakers for whom he laid down the template.

The three films collected in this box set – two early Seventies ‘lost films’ and a classic plague panic thriller – show there’s more to the legendary director than simply gut-munching ghouls. The comedy romance There’s Always Vanilla, psychological thriller Season of the Witch, and infection horror The Crazies – all filmed in and around Pittsburgh – serve to display the broader thematic concerns and auteurist leanings of a skilled craftsman too often pigeonholed within the genre; that said, The Crazies is one of his strongest horror offerings, with memorable performances from Lynn Lowry and Richard Liberty.
Romero managed to inject his films with subtle social allegories, nuanced examinations of the human condition, and just the right amount of black humor, so that they were immediately recognized as his and his alone. The box set showcases the director feeling his way towards the mainstream and showing a formidable assurance in three very distinct genres.

This fantastic box set includes brand new restorations of the three films, a lavish 60-page booklet featuring new writing on this fascinating chapter of Romero’s career, a wealth of extras including interviews, featurettes and behind the scenes documentaries, reversible sleeves for all three films featuring original and newly-commissioned artwork, and a beautifully designed and striking slipcase featuring an iconic image of the man himself.

WEEKLY BOX OFFICE WRAP January 7-9 2011

JANUARY 7-9th 2011

There was a lot of movement in the top ten films over the weekend with one significant accomplishment-TRUE GRIT lasso’ed itself into the number one spot bringing in $14,605,135 and horse kicked LITTLE FOCKERS into number two pulling in $13,487,245.

The surprise of the weekend was Relativity’s new release SEASON OF THE WITCH, starring Nicolas Cage, flying into the number three position with a decent showing of $10,612,375. It was released in 2,816 theaters with an average $3,769 per theater.

TRON: LEGACY was barely edged out of the spot, but only moved down to the number four slot.

Screen Gem’s COUNTRY STRONG strummed its way into number six by opening in 1,422 more theaters. Now with a 1,424 theater showing, it had the second highest per theater average of $5,145.

The number one highest grossing per theater average was THE KING’S SPEECH with $8,462 in 758 theaters. The unfortunate two movies finally making their journey out of the top ten were GULLIVER’S TRAVELS and THE CHRONICLES OF NARNINA:THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER.

The rest of the new releases for the weekend were in limited release, and none of them were even close to breaking the top ten. NO ONE KILLED JESSICA, a Bollywood film by director Raj Kumar Gupta raked in $227,473 in 48 theaters. PHIL OCHS:THERE BUT FOR FORTUNE, out of First Run studios and directed by Kenneth Bowser, made a mere $18,211 in one theater. An IFC release, THE TIME THAT REMAINS directed/starring/writer by Elia Suleiman, is a historic Israeli drama that was nominated for a Golden Palm at Cannes back in 2009. It brought in a simple $6,453 in the one theater it was released in. And the last of the new releases for the weekend is the Romanian film IF I WANT TO WHISTLE, I WHISTLE, directed by Florin Serban and released by Film Movement, was out in one theater and yielded $2,999.

Check out the changes in the top ten this week and see if you agree with the rest of the public. If not, read some of our reviews on the films and go see them. They are all movies worthy of a viewing, and some definitely before award season kicks off Sunday with the Golden Globes. Enjoy!

Nicolas Cage Looks Confused in this SEASON OF THE WITCH Poster

season of the witch header

Here’s a thought to make you smile or even, possibly, giggle a bit on a late Friday.   Imagine a photo shoot getting publicity stills ready for SEASON OF THE WITCH, one of which may even be used for this eventual poster.   Nicolas Cage is there, lion-like mane of hair flowing and medieval garb accompanying him.   Now, imagine what the photographer said to Cage to get the expression you see above.

“Hey, Nic, we’re gonna put a flaming woman underneath you here and maybe even a couple of doves.”

“Yo, Nicolas, Ron Perlman has better hair than you.”

“Hey, Sailor Ripley, my son, Zod, is gonna beat your son’s ass.”

I imagine it had to be something along those lines.   It couldn’t be something as simple as, “Look menacing” or “Be heroic.”   Nonetheless, something was said or done, Nicolas Cage made that face, and here is the resulting poster.   It comes to us courtesy of Shock Till You Drop.

SEASON OF THE WITCH hits theaters on March 19th, 2010.

SEASON OF THE WITCH Scares Up a Full Trailer

season of the witch

Nicolas Cage is getting his witch on, in more ways than a few.   With the new trailer for SEASON OF THE WITCH, Cage sports a new hair-style (no shocker there), and wields a mighty sword (shock included).   It’s also pretty sweet seeing Ron Perlman continuing his trek through these badass genres.

You can check out the trailer over at Fandango, where they have it for viewing in glorious HD.   It’s somewhat of a standard offering for this type of film, lots of gloomy music, quick edits, and sword slashing from wall to wall.   This movie looks and feels like it’s going to be along those same lines as THE 13TH WARRIOR, a film that I, actually, dig quite a lot.

Directed by Dominic Sena, who has brought us the atrocious GONE IN SIXTY SECONDS and the even more appalling WHITEOUT, SEASON OF THE WITCH looks like it mighty satisfy some horror fans’ cravings for some epic period fare.   Never mind that this thing looks one Nicolas Cage short of debuting on SyFy.   I’m still mighty intrigued by it all.

Run, don’t walk, over to Fandango to check out the trailer right now.   SEASON OF THE WITCH hits theaters on March 19th, 2010.

Featurette Friday: Happy, Happy Halloween from Silver Shamrock

Some of you may not have seen HALLOWEEN III: SEASON OF THE WITCH.   Some of you may have heard that, being the red-headed step-child of the HALLOWEEN franchise, the film simply isn’t worth checking out.   If anyone told you that, they are dead wrong.   Granted, it’s not as terrifying or as memorable as the original film, or even some of the sequels, but it certainly is better than your average horror flick.

One of the reasons for this can be found just below.   Just in time for October 31st, we give you the clip that will rattle around in your brain for days and months to come.

Enjoy, and, from all of us at We Are Movie Geeks, we wish you a fun and safe Halloween.

SEASON OF THE WITCH Teaser Just in Time for the Season of the Witch

nicolas cage season of the witch

Oddly enough, when I saw that a teaser was out for Nicolas Cage’s upcoming movie SEASON OF THE WITCH, I thought to myself, “It’s too early for horrible, Disney adaptation.” (It was early and my REM sleep-induced brain was telling me this was THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE)  Imagine my look of estrangement when, upon attempting to watch the teaser, I was asked for my age verification.

Thanks to the wonderful people over at IGN, we have our first, motion glimpse of Nicolas Cage swinging swords and cutting down beasties where they stand.  Don’t worry if Nic Cage doesn’t do it for you, because he’s brought Ron Perlman along for the ride.

Check it out right here:

All in all, it’s quite effective.  If you can get past Cage’s stagnant acting (completely sans accent.  He’s playing a 14th Century Crusader, so I’m not quite sure how his voice should sound, but I’m thinking this is wrong) and the fact that the director, Dominic Sena, last graced us with WHITEOUT, this one looks like it might be some horrific fun.

SEASON OF THE WITCH hits theaters on March 19th.  Cage’s accent kicks in a little bit later.
