WEEKLY BOX OFFICE WRAP JANUARY 28-30 2011

WEEKLY BOX OFFICE WRAP JANUARY 28-30 2011

There was a little strange movement in the past weekend box office. Two new films jumped into the top 3 and an oldie jumped back in to number 10. Warner Brothers new release THE RITE, starring Sir Anthony Hopkins, took possession of the top spot with $14,789,393 in 2,985 theaters with an average of $4,955 per location. The remake of the 1972 Charles Bronson flick THE MECHANIC, released by CBS and starring the rugged Jason Statham, put the hit out on the number three spot. Since it was a fairly slow weekend at the movies, it pulled in only $11,422,006 in 2,703 theaters averaging $4,226 per theater. Surprisingly, THE DILEMMA and YOGI BEAR are still in the top ten. Perhaps the amount of theatres they are still in can account for this? One can only hope.

The remaining new releases for the weekend are not in the top ten, but a couple were close. FROM PRADA TO NADA, a Lionsgate Films release starring the lovely Camilla Belle and Alexa Vega, was released in 256 theaters with an impressive average of $4,358 per theater for a total $1,115,638 for the weekend total. Next is the highly anticipated BIUTIFUL, starring the beautiful Javier Bardem and directed by the Oscar nominated Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, released limited to only 59 theaters this weekend and yielded $456,930 for an average of $7,745 each. Variance Films new release of IP MAN 2: LEGEND OF THE GRANDMASTER, directed by Wilson Yip, showing in 20 theaters averaging $3,053 each for a total weekend of $61,057. The latest IFC release is the sci-fi comedy KABOOM, staring Haley Bennett and Thomas Dekker, in one theater bringing in $13,714. WHEN WE LEAVE (DIE FREMDE), an Olive films release is the directorial debut of actress/writer Feo Aladag and was released in two theaters averaging $3,009 for a total $6,018 in the US. Lastly, is the romantic thriller Rage (RABIA) based on the novel by Sergio Bizzio and directed by Sebastian Cordero. One theater=$952.

WEEKLY BOX OFFICE WRAP 1/14-1/16/2011

We have a new winner for number one! THE GREEN HORNET! THE GREEN HORNET drove The Black Beauty straight to the top with a whopping $33,526,876 in 3,584 theaters with the second highest per theater average of $9,355 in the first week of release from Sony. (And you will never guess which film had the highest, but you will find out.)
THE GREEN HORNET threw TRUE GRIT off the number one saddle and moved it to number three. Universal’s release of THE DILEMMA drove right into the number two slot putting LITTLE FOCKERS into the corner in number six. Last week’s number three, SEASON OF THE WITCH, flew down to number ten in the short lived top three position.
TRON:LEGACY is still hanging on to it’s light cycle at the number seven slot after being out for five weeks now. Films that fell out of the top ten are TANGLED and COUNTRY STRONG. THE KING’S SPEECH just keeps moving up the top ten monarchy, and deservedly so, especially after Colin Firth’s Golden Globe win. THE KING’S SPEECH is now up to the number four position all the way from number nine.
And now for the new releases for the weekend.
The surprising number one per theater average was Sony Classic’s BARNEY’S VERSION in only four theaters with a huge $16,310 each. Perhaps due to the Golden Globe win of Mr.Paul Giamatti? Yamla Pagla Deewana, directed by Samir Karnik, is a Bollywood drama of a father-son journey that produced $504,116 in 84 theaters with an average $6,001 each. THE HEART SPECIALIST, actually filmed in 2006, written and directed by Dennis Cooper and stars Zoe Saldana, was released on the 14th by Freestyle Releasing. Showing in 422theaters, it pumped in $473,062 with an average $1,121 each. Magnolia Pictures released the third installment of the series as ONG BAK 3 in 3 theaters making $5,648 with an average $1.883 each. A 2011 re-issue of the 1925 BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN, directed by Sergei M. Eisenstein, was only released in one theater, but made $5,641.
Finally, the 2009 PLASTIC PLANET by First Run, a documentary directed by Werner Boote, guides the audience on the dangers of plastic to our world. Unfortunately, it was only released in one theater as well with a disparaging $740 take.
Now, The Top Ten.
1.THE GREEN HORNET $33,526,876
2.THE DILEMMA $17,816,230
3.TRUE GRIT $11,004,755
4.THE KING’S SPEECH $9,186,203
5.BLACK SWAN $8,342,648
6.LITTLE FOCKERS $7,194,865
7.TRON:LEGACY $5,679,858
8.YOGI BEAR $5,365,547
9.THE FIGHTER $5,101,140
10.SEASON OF THE WITCH $4,606,584

WEEKLY BOX OFFICE WRAP January 7-9 2011

JANUARY 7-9th 2011

There was a lot of movement in the top ten films over the weekend with one significant accomplishment-TRUE GRIT lasso’ed itself into the number one spot bringing in $14,605,135 and horse kicked LITTLE FOCKERS into number two pulling in $13,487,245.

The surprise of the weekend was Relativity’s new release SEASON OF THE WITCH, starring Nicolas Cage, flying into the number three position with a decent showing of $10,612,375. It was released in 2,816 theaters with an average $3,769 per theater.

TRON: LEGACY was barely edged out of the spot, but only moved down to the number four slot.

Screen Gem’s COUNTRY STRONG strummed its way into number six by opening in 1,422 more theaters. Now with a 1,424 theater showing, it had the second highest per theater average of $5,145.

The number one highest grossing per theater average was THE KING’S SPEECH with $8,462 in 758 theaters. The unfortunate two movies finally making their journey out of the top ten were GULLIVER’S TRAVELS and THE CHRONICLES OF NARNINA:THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER.

The rest of the new releases for the weekend were in limited release, and none of them were even close to breaking the top ten. NO ONE KILLED JESSICA, a Bollywood film by director Raj Kumar Gupta raked in $227,473 in 48 theaters. PHIL OCHS:THERE BUT FOR FORTUNE, out of First Run studios and directed by Kenneth Bowser, made a mere $18,211 in one theater. An IFC release, THE TIME THAT REMAINS directed/starring/writer by Elia Suleiman, is a historic Israeli drama that was nominated for a Golden Palm at Cannes back in 2009. It brought in a simple $6,453 in the one theater it was released in. And the last of the new releases for the weekend is the Romanian film IF I WANT TO WHISTLE, I WHISTLE, directed by Florin Serban and released by Film Movement, was out in one theater and yielded $2,999.

Check out the changes in the top ten this week and see if you agree with the rest of the public. If not, read some of our reviews on the films and go see them. They are all movies worthy of a viewing, and some definitely before award season kicks off Sunday with the Golden Globes. Enjoy!

WEEKLY BOX OFFICE WRAP December 31 – January 2

Whew, it was a close race this past weekend at the box office folks.

LITTLE FOCKERS and TRUE GRIT were ‘duking’ it out for number one. LITTLE FOCKERS won out though, with a small lead in 471 more theaters. The weekend total for the LITLLE FOCKERS was a strong $25,766,485 for it’s second week in theaters, which now covers the disclosed budget of $100 million. TRUE GRIT hangs on to the number two space while barely falling behind the big budget flick. Paramount has to be excited about that measly $38 million budget left in the dust now.

TRUE GRIT remained in the slot with a huge $24,416,515 over the weekend.

Ok, I need a pie in the face for this one; YOGI BEAR is proving me wrong by filling the picnic basket with $12,385,000, growing ever closer to climbing over the mountains of the generous $80 million budget. It is nice to see a family film doing so well though. There were two movies that flip-flopped out and in of the top 10 over the weekend though. THE KING’S SPEECH moved into the top ten and THE TOURIST moved out.

THE KING’S SPEECH can only be expected to continually increase revenue and recognition as we get closer to awards season and as more theaters pick it up. Right now it is only in 700 theaters versus the 2,756 houisng THE TOURIST.

Only two new releases this weekend to mention, BLUE VALENTINE and ANOTHER YEAR. The highly controversial BLUE VALENTINE with Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling was released in only 4 theaters, but produced a whopping $48,432 per theater average garnering $291,607, one-third of the $1 million budget back already. ANOTHER YEAR, the latest Jim Broadbent endeavor, was the other limited release this week showing its mettle with $18,645 per theater average and yielding $164,654 in 6 theaters.

And now, the actual results for the Top 10:

1.LITTLE FOCKERS $25,766,485
2.TRUE GRIT $24,416,515
3.TRON:LEGACY $18,756,973
4.YOGI BEAR $12,385,000
5.THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA:THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER $10,252,775
6.THE FIGHTER $10,005,066
7.TANGLED $9,803,091
8.GULLIVER’S TRAVELS $9.300,099
9.BLACK SWAN $8,881,595
10.THE KING’S SPEECH $7,775,463

WEEKLY BOX OFFICE WRAP: DEC. 24th-26th

December 24-26

(Note: Some figures are reflecting adjusted grosses since they had an earlier release date that is included)

What a variety for the 2010 holiday crowd this year. Among the box office hits were movies of fantasy, true stories, sequels, remakes, and re-imaginings-oh my! The three films in the Top 10 that were bumped from last week’s listing were HOW DO YOU KNOW, HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHY HALLOWS PART 1, AND UNSTOPPABLE, and 3 new releases moved into the empty slots.

LITTLE FOCKERS, the third installment in an extremely lucrative franchise about the family Universal built, was released on December 22, 2010 and has a total gross of $45,083,800 in 3,536 theaters averaging $8,720 each. If these numbers keep up, this trilogy has its’ eyes on track to make up a billion dollar trio for the studio.

The remake of TRUE GRIT by the Coen Brothers came galloping in with strong numbers in second place. Paramount released this feature on December 22, 2010, and has since reigned in a solid $36,068,000 in 3,047 theaters with an average $8,156, almost recovering the released budget of $38 million in less than one week.

The last of the new releases this week that sailed into the Top 10 was Fox studio’s GULLIVER’S TRAVELS. Jack Black can usually reel in some large numbers, but not this trip. Even though it landed at number eight in the box office standings this week, the $6,307,691 is small compared to the top two films. It was released on December 25th in only 2,546 theaters, but still only an average of $2,477 per theater which was disappointing.

The rest of the new releases were almost unknown or in an extremely limited release phase. TEES MAAR KHAN, a Bollywood film by Farah Khan; SOMEWHERE By Sofia Coppola; THE ILLUSIONIST (2010), an animated foreign film; COUNTRY STRONG awaiting the wide release January 7, 2011; HADEWIJCH by French writer/director Bruno Dumont; SUMMER WARS (a dubbed 2009 Japanese animated film); finally, last but not least, NENETTE, a documentary of an aged orangutan by Nicolas Philibert.

And now for the weekly rankings…

The Top 10 (12/24-26)

1.LITTLE FOCKERS $30,833,665

2.TRUE GRIT (2010) $24,850,000

3.TRON:LEGACY $19,151,498

4.THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA:THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER $9,478,043

7.TANGLED $6,427,816

December 17-19, 2010

TRON: LEGACY was number one this weekend with a light disc, not a bullet, as anticipated. The box office hopes were higher than the actual result, despite the heavy marketing campaign. They were solid figures though, averaging over $12,758 per theater (3,451 to be exact) and about $44,026,211 overall. With a budget of $170 million, it is unlikely TRON: LEGACY will recover that domestically. However, the releasing studio, Buena Vista, has had a fantastic year so far. They are behind the releases of ALICE IN WONDERLAND and TOY STORY 3 as well, which were huge at the box office and also very likely to see some Oscar nods soon.

A far away second was YOGI BEAR, a Warner Brothers release, that was actually in more theaters (3,515), but unfortunately had a much lower per theater average of only about $4,669, resulting in $16,411,322. With a small yield on their investment of a budget of $80 million, they will not likely see the profits over the mountains of Jellystone. Although, it has a very good chance of a slower drop off than would be expected due to the approaching holidays when more families are able to take the time for the family outing.

Coming in at number 8 at the box office this weekend was HOW DO YOU KNOW with a very unsatisfactory $7,484,696 on an operating budget of a staggering $120 million. Yes, a reported $120,000,000. This was a huge swing and a miss for Sony, only averaging $3,014 per theater in 2,483 theaters across the US. Despite the appealing cast, it was still not enticing enough to get the movie crowd tempted to spend their hard earned money on it.

The last two films released this weekend, in an extremely limited fashion, are RABBIT HOLE and CASINO JACK. Both did not have impressive overall dollar figures, but their per theater average was commendable. RABBIT HOLE yielded $53,778 in 5 screens making it a $10,756 per theater average. CASINO JACK averaged $4,933 per theater for the 7 theaters that were fortunate enough to show this film.

So, here is how the Top Ten shaked out for the weekend…

  1. TRON: LEGACY — $44,026,211
  2. YOGI BEAR — $16,411,322
  3. THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA:THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER — $12,388,662
  4. THE FIGHTER — $12,135,468
  5. TANGLED — $8,775,344
  6. THE TOURIST — $8,522,287
  7. BLACK SWAN — $8,383,479
  8. HOW DO YOU KNOW — $7,484,696
  9. HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS PART 1 — $5,022,361
  10. UNSTOPPABLE — $1,843,696
