Synopsis:
It has taken 10 years, two little Fockers with wife Pam (Teri Polo) and countless hurdles for Greg (Ben Stiller) to finally get in with his tightly wound father-in-law, Jack (Robert De Niro). When Greg and Pam’s entire clan including Pam’s lovelorn ex, Kevin (Owen Wilson) descends for the twins birthday party, Greg must prove to the skeptical Jack that he’s fully capable as the man of the house.
There was a lot of movement in the top ten films over the weekend with one significant accomplishment-TRUE GRIT lasso’ed itself into the number one spot bringing in $14,605,135 and horse kicked LITTLE FOCKERS into number two pulling in $13,487,245.
The surprise of the weekend was Relativity’s new release SEASON OF THE WITCH, starring Nicolas Cage, flying into the number three position with a decent showing of $10,612,375. It was released in 2,816 theaters with an average $3,769 per theater.
TRON: LEGACY was barely edged out of the spot, but only moved down to the number four slot.
Screen Gem’s COUNTRY STRONG strummed its way into number six by opening in 1,422 more theaters. Now with a 1,424 theater showing, it had the second highest per theater average of $5,145.
The number one highest grossing per theater average was THE KING’S SPEECH with $8,462 in 758 theaters. The unfortunate two movies finally making their journey out of the top ten were GULLIVER’S TRAVELS and THE CHRONICLES OF NARNINA:THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER.
The rest of the new releases for the weekend were in limited release, and none of them were even close to breaking the top ten. NO ONE KILLED JESSICA, a Bollywood film by director Raj Kumar Gupta raked in $227,473 in 48 theaters. PHIL OCHS:THERE BUT FOR FORTUNE, out of First Run studios and directed by Kenneth Bowser, made a mere $18,211 in one theater. An IFC release, THE TIME THAT REMAINS directed/starring/writer by Elia Suleiman, is a historic Israeli drama that was nominated for a Golden Palm at Cannes back in 2009. It brought in a simple $6,453 in the one theater it was released in. And the last of the new releases for the weekend is the Romanian film IF I WANT TO WHISTLE, I WHISTLE, directed by Florin Serban and released by Film Movement, was out in one theater and yielded $2,999.

What a variety for the 2010 holiday crowd this year. Among the box office hits were movies of fantasy, true stories, sequels, remakes, and re-imaginings-oh my! The three films in the Top 10 that were bumped from last week’s listing were HOW DO YOU KNOW, HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHY HALLOWS PART 1, AND UNSTOPPABLE, and 3 new releases moved into the empty slots.
LITTLE FOCKERS, the third installment in an extremely lucrative franchise about the family Universal built, was released on December 22, 2010 and has a total gross of $45,083,800 in 3,536 theaters averaging $8,720 each. If these numbers keep up, this trilogy has its’ eyes on track to make up a billion dollar trio for the studio.
The remake of TRUE GRIT by the Coen Brothers came galloping in with strong numbers in second place. Paramount released this feature on December 22, 2010, and has since reigned in a solid $36,068,000 in 3,047 theaters with an average $8,156, almost recovering the released budget of $38 million in less than one week.
The last of the new releases this week that sailed into the Top 10 was Fox studio’s GULLIVER’S TRAVELS. Jack Black can usually reel in some large numbers, but not this trip. Even though it landed at number eight in the box office standings this week, the $6,307,691 is small compared to the top two films. It was released on December 25th in only 2,546 theaters, but still only an average of $2,477 per theater which was disappointing.
The rest of the new releases were almost unknown or in an extremely limited release phase. TEES MAAR KHAN, a Bollywood film by Farah Khan; SOMEWHERE By Sofia Coppola; THE ILLUSIONIST (2010), an animated foreign film; COUNTRY STRONG awaiting the wide release January 7, 2011; HADEWIJCH by French writer/director Bruno Dumont; SUMMER WARS (a dubbed 2009 Japanese animated film); finally, last but not least, NENETTE, a documentary of an aged orangutan by Nicolas Philibert.

DEVIL (Horror) Friday, September 17:

CATFISH (Thriller/Documentary) limited – Friday, September 17 and expansion – Friday, September 24:

MY SOUL TO TAKE (Science Fiction/Fantasy, Suspense/Horror and Thriller) Friday, October 8:
In the sleepy town of Riverton, legend tells of a serial killer who swore he would return to murder the seven children born the night he died. Now, 16 years later, people are disappearing again. So, Jay Roach isn’t directing ‘Little Fockers.’ Yeah, we knew that last month. Unfortunately, we then said Peter Segal would be stepping into the director’s position. Now, that has been proven inaccurate, as well.
Word came down today that Paul Weitz (‘About a Boy’ and ‘In Good Company’) is in talks to direct the third installment of the adventures of Gaylord Focker. Note, he is in talks for the job. Nothing is set in stone at this point.
We will let you know as soon as anything official comes out. Weitz just recently wrapped production on the horror fantasy flick, ‘Cirque du Freak.’
Universal is pushing ‘Little Fockers’ into production as soon as possible with an eye on production beginning as early as summer or fall.
John Hamburg, who wrote the first two films and directed ‘Along Came Polly’ and the upcoming ‘I Love You, Man’, is back on screenwriting duties. The story, as the title suggests, revolves around the happy couple (Ben Stiller and Teri Polo) having to deal with parenthood.
However, the film will be getting a new director. Jay Roach, who helmed the first two installments of the ‘Focker’ franchise, won’t be returning for the third installment. Some names that are being bandied about to replace Roach are Paul Weitz (‘In Good Company’), David Wain (‘Role Models’), and Peyton Reed (‘Yes Man’).
Stiller, Robert DeNiro, and Owen Wilson are all in negotiations to reprise their respective roles. No word on Dustin Hoffman, Barbra Streisand, or Blythe Danner, but I’m sure they will be on board soon enough.
‘Meet the Parents’ made $330 million worldwide and ‘Meet the Fockers’ made $516 million worldwide. The fact that it has taken this long to get ‘Little Fockers’ in production is shocking.
I find it hilarious that the guy who directed ‘The Diving Bell and the Butterfly’, Julian Schnabel, and the guy who directed ‘The Love Guru’, Marco Schnabel, have the same last name. Â This way, whenever the guy who directed ‘The Love Guru’ has a new project, and the reports just use his last name, art house geeks get all in a lather until they realize what’s really going on. Â Just me. Â I’m sick.
Anywho, the guy who directed ‘The Love Guru’ is teaming with Larry Stuckey, the guy who wrote the upcoming ‘Little Fockers’, to make a comedy called ‘Girlfriend in a Coma’.  The film will be a satirical high school comedy that looks at an unlikely romance.  Michael McCullers, who wrote and directed ‘Baby Mama’ and 3 Arts will produce the project.
Schnabel and Stuckey met and honed their chops under comedy veteran Jay Roach. Schnabel was a second-unit director on Roach’s ‘Meet the Fockers’, and Stuckey was an associate producer on the 2004 film.
