Breaking ‘Twilight’ News: David Slade confirmed as ‘Eclipse’ director

Where are the fangs, Slade?

Summit Entertainment has confirmed 30 Days of Night and Hard Candy director David Slade will be directing the third installment of the Twilight saga Eclipse.

Yesterday it was reported from various sources that Slade was in talks for the job, but a Summit press release this morning made the claim official. Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg is also said to reprise her role as part of the third film.

The choice of Slade may come as a shock to those who are fans of his work. His previous films are undoubtedly darker material than the Twilight saga was ever meant to be. But he’s proven himself worthy in both the vampire genre and character study films, one of the elements many said to be truly lacking in the first film.

For those unfamiliar with the book series, the plot line of Eclipse is, for lack of a better term, much more ‘active’ than the first two. While Twilight and New Moon spend much of their time establishing characters and the relationships between them, Eclipse and the fourth installment, Breaking Dawn, see much more conflict–something that Slade has shown as one of his strong suits.

The Eclipse release is tentatively scheduled for June 30, 2010.

’30 Days of Night’ Director in Talks for ‘Eclipse’

30-days-of-night

That pic right there is about as scary from director David Slade as we are going to get for quite awhile.   According to Hollywood Insider, the ‘Hard Candy’ and   ’30 Days of Night’ helmer is being circled by Summit Entertainment to take directing duties on the third film in the ‘Twilight Saga,’ ‘Eclipse.’   This comes just weeks after the rumors that Drew Barrymore was in talks for the job were shot down.

Nothing is set in stone, but sources close to the project tell EW that Slade is in negotiations for the job.   This would be quite a change of pace for Slade whose previous two films have been pretty hard-edged and very rated R.

Chris Weitz is currently filming the second film, ‘The Twilight Saga: New Moon,’ in Vancouver.   ‘Eclipse’ is scheduled to be released in June of 2010.

What do you think?   Is Slade a good choice to helm the third ‘Twilight’ film?   Should he just stick with rated R films that don’t hold him back?   If you’ve read the ‘Twilight’ books, does the series get darker/more adult as they go along a la ‘Harry Potter’?   Let us know by commenting below!

First Look: Wolf Pack From ‘New Moon’

Are shirtless and ripped Native Americans your thing? Â  Well have at it. Â  Above, you will find a picture of (left to right) Alex Meraz, Chaske Spencer, Alex Meraz, Bronso Pelletier, and Kiowa Gordon who make up the Wolf Pack in the new ‘Twilight Saga’ film, ‘New Moon.’

This first pic of the Wolf Pack comes to us today courtesy of USA Today

The four actors join  Taylor Lautner, who returns as Jacob Black.   The film’s story tells of Black growing closer to Bella (Kristen Stewart) after her vampire boyfriend, Edward (Robert Pattinson), runs off.

The film has been shooting in Vancouver for the past several weeks, a location that makes wearing little to nothing a difficult shoot.

“It’s not pleasant for the actors,” says director Chris Weitz. “But they have all been good-natured. They show up on location in drenching, cold rain, and I say, ‘OK, off with the robes.’ ”

‘New Moon’ comes out on November 20th. Â  Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna go do 800 crunches and tan.

Fourth and Final ‘Twilight’ Film Already Being Planned

twilight-cast

The fourth film in ‘The Twilight Saga’ is already being planned, some seven months before the second film has even been released.   TheWrap.com has learned that ‘Breaking Dawn’ will begin production in late spring 2010.

Summit Entertainment spokesman Paul Pflug declined to confirm or deny the report, saying only, “Summit has no comment on that rumor at this time.”

‘New Moon,’ the second film in the series is set for release on November 20.   ‘Eclipse,’ the third film, is scheduled for release some time in June of 2010.   With this tentative start date, it appears Summit Entertainment is anticipating a November, 2010 release date for ‘Breaking Dawn.’

‘Twilight,’ made for $37 million, has raked in $379.9 million worldwide, and the series stands as the driving force behind Summit Entertainment.   The distributor also had a relatively large hit with ‘Knowing’ earlier this year.

What do you think?   Is it too soon to already be planning on ‘Breaking Dawn’?   Have you read that far in the ‘Twilight’ series?   What can fans of the first film be expecting from the third and fourth films?   Let us know by commenting below!

Michael Sheen Turns in His ‘Underworld’ Fur for Some ‘Twilight’ Fangs

michael-sheen

Michael Sheen, best known for his roles in ‘The Queen’ and ‘Frost/Nixon,’ has joined the cast of ‘The Twilight Saga: New Moon,’ currenly shooting in Vancouver. Â

Sheen, who has played a werewolf in the ‘Underworld’ movies, will be playing the leader of the Volturi, a coven of vampires who reside in Italy. Â  In the ‘Twilight’ novels, the Volturi are regarded as royalty, since they are over three thousand years old and serve as police of the vampire community. Â  There are three leaders of the Volturi in the novels. Â  There is no word whether Sheen will play one of them or if the three characters in the novel have been combined into one character for the film.

‘The Twilight Saga: New Moon’ is set for a November 20th release.

Drew Barrymore may be Directing Third ‘Twilight’ Film

drew-barrymore

A caveat before this article.   Take this as rumor only.   Nothing has been confirmed yet.   EW has learned that Summit Entertainment, while discussing who would be directing ‘Eclipse’, the third film in the ‘Twilight’ franchise, is considering giving the directing reigns over to Drew Barrymore.

Chris Weitz, who is directing ‘New Moon’, took over the directing duties on the franchise after Catherine Hardwicke left.   With the releases of the second and third films coming so close together, Weitz cannot direct both.   Why they can’t direct both films under one production is beyond me.   They have to use the same actors, right?

Barrymore has just finished her directorial debut, ‘Whip It!’ starring Ellen Page.

Third ‘Twilight’ Film Already Has a Release Date

twilight4

You heard that right, the THIRD film in the newly deemed ‘Twilight Saga’, ‘Eclipse’, already has a release date set. Â  Summit has already made the move to slot the film in as a Summer tent-pole film for 2010, coming out on June 30th.

‘New Moon’, the second film in the franchise comes out on November 20th of this year, so that gives 222 days between the two releases.

(My math skills could be a little off, so that number might not be totally accurate. Â  We’re Movie Geeks here, not math whizzes.)

Does this mean ‘New Moon’ and ‘Eclipse’ are shooting back-to-back a la ‘The Matrix Reloaded’ and ‘Revolutions’ or the second and third films in the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ series?

What do you think? Â  Is this enough time to get out a decent film? Â  Does it even matter how shoddy the film is just so long as ‘Twilight’ fanatics have their new films sooner than later? Â  Let us know by commenting below!

Dakota Fanning in ‘New Moon’?

E! online is reporting that Dakota Fanning is in talks to co-star in ‘New Moon’. Â  Evidently, she is being handed the part of Jane.

“There were no auditions,† a source reveals. “They just offered it to her outright, and now they’re in negotiations. They’ve been going back and forth.†

In the novels, Jane is a member of Italy’s Volturi, the most deadly group of vampires known to man. Â  Somehow, Fanning’s name just doesn’t cry out to me when thinking about the most deadly vampire in the world.

It is also reported that an online petition was set up to cast Fanning in the part, as fans of the novels feel she would be perfect for the role.

What do you think? Â  Is Dakota Fanning right for Jane? Â  Does her name bring too much baggage along with? Â  Are you already sick of hearing about ‘New Moon’? Â  Let us know by commenting below!
