killzone2-3

Variety calls KILLZONE 2: “A turbo-charged smackdown, which genre fans will devour with the enthusiasm of a child opening presents on Christmas!”

killzone2-1

When an undercover cop gets too close to revealing the mastermind of a drug syndicate, his cover is blown. Double-crossed and under a false identity, he’s thrown into a Thai prison, where a guard discovers the inmate – claiming he’s a cop – is a bone marrow match for his dying daughter…and his warden may have an even deadlier operation hidden within the prison walls.

killzone2-2

In this giddily frenetic follow-up (though not a sequel) to modern martial arts epic KILL ZONE (aka SPL: SHA PO LANG), action icons Tony Jaa (ONG BAK, THE PROTECTOR) Wu Jing (WOLF WARRIOR) and Zhang Jin (IP MAN 3) team up with Hong Kong megastars Simon Yam, and Louis Koo for a breakneck story of dirty cops, prison riots, and black market organ transplants, all brought together by a non-stop series of inventive, bone-crunching setpieces.

Your Weekly Source for the Newest Releases to Blu-Ray

There’s a whole lot of everything to choose from this week. Criterion serves up the 2008 Japanese gem STILL WALKING along with a fine dose of Fellini with AMARCORD, while on the opposite end we are graced by the release of Panela Anderson’s BARB WIRE on blu-ray. One of my favorite animated flicks on 2010, HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON, hits store shelves and there’s a Samsung 3D starter version of the blu-ray disc available with certain 3D TV purchases. Doesn’t that make you want to run out and throw down $3000? Both versions of I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE hit blu-ray and DVD, but I still prefer my Millennium Edition DVD featuring a commentary by Joe Bob Briggs.  Two “rivers” converge on blu-ray for you viewing pleasure and THELMA & LOUISE get the anniversary treatment.

Blu-Ray for Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011

  1. AMARCORD: Criterion Collection (1973)

  3. FOR COLORED GIRLS: Blu-Ray/DVD Combo (2010)

Some classics also make it back to DVD for re-release, including Alfred Hitchcock’s STRANGERS ON A TRAIN and Howard Hawks’ BRINGING UP BABY, starring Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant. The 70’s have their moment as well, with DVD releases of RIOT, starring Jim Brown and Gene Hackman, and WUSA, starring Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward.

ONG BAK 3 Trailer Flies Like a Knee to the Face

I remember this time last year prepping myself for South by Southwest 2009 and the presentation of Tony Jaa’s ONG BAK 2, the film that A) completely drove Jaa insane and B) had absolutely nothing to do with ONG BAK minus flying knees and elbows that caused mass amounts of brain damage.

Now, Jaa is flinging those appendages again for ONG BAK 3.   While it still appears to have nothing to do with the first ONG BAK, the new trailer, courtesy of Twitch, indicates it might be a direct sequel to last year’s sequel/prequel/I’m completely confused now.

Check it out:

Never again will I say Jaa doesn’t know how to use an elephant’s tusk to his advantage.   I never said that before, but I damn sure won’t now.

ONG BAK 3 hits theaters in Thailand in April.   No word on when we might be seeing it in the states.

‘Ong Bak 2: The Beginning’ Trailer Released

ong bak 2
Reactions to Tony Jaa’s latest martial arts, kick in your face were pretty mixed at the South by Southwest midnight series this year. It was the opening night, so some may have been kinder to it than others. Whether you thought it was an epic punch to the head or meaningless fight scenes after another, there was no doubting that it had some amazing choreography.

‘Ong Bak 2: The Beginning’ gets a limited release on October 23rd, so you can judge it for yourselves then. Until that day, though, you can gaze at the trailer, which was just released from Magnet Releasing.

Here’s the description of the film:

Martial arts superstar Tony Jaa stars in and directs this epic tale of revenge set hundreds of years in the past. Featuring a huge cast and hordes of elephants, this prequel takes Jaa’s skills to the next level, showcasing him as a master of a wide range of martial arts styles – while proving him to be a promising director as well.

SXSW Review: ‘Ong Bak 2’

ong-bak2

Jeremy:

Tony Jaa is back, but not exactly with much of a vengeance. ‘Ong Bak 2’ is not the nonstop, leg-breaking, elbow and knee flying action adventure we’ve been hoping for. Don’t get me wrong. There is plenty of Jaa throwing his appendages about knocking out bad guys in black with impacts that sound like gunshots. However, ‘Ong Bak 2’ still has a story to tell, and it is going to tell it come hell or high water.

Set in 1431 Thailand, the film tells the story of Tien (Jaa), a young boy whose father, a general, and mother are slaughtered by Lord Rajsena and his marauding army. Tien is the only one to survive the slaughter, and he is taken under the martial arts tutelage of Chernang. Years later, Tien has mastered his skills, learning to combat using all sorts of weapons including stampeding elephants, and, after taking over the leadership of Chernang’s clan, he sets out for his revenge against Rajsena.

The story, or, more so, the way in which the story plays out, in ‘Ong Bak 2’ gets too convoluted for its own good. What should be a rather simple story of revenge and a people taking their land back from the evil ones in power quickly becomes head-scratching as we are subject to flashback after flashback. All of this is done without much warning or any moment of clarity that lets us know where we are in the film’s timeline.

One minute, we’re watching Tien train, fighting a procession of three different fighters all with different special abilities. The next, we’re seeing a young Tien’s subplot of a love story. It’s supposed to help us understand Tien’s pain and want vengeance as much as he does. It doesn’t. It only makes us realize we’re not seeing anyone bleeding or getting their bones broken.

Sometimes it’s enough just to see the good guys kicking the crap out of the bad guys. Unfortunately, so much is built around the story in ‘Ong Bak 2’ that you spend as much time wondering why Jaa is beating up someone as you do staring in awe at his physicality.

As far as that goes, it is still amazing to see the guy move. The honeymoon might be over in regards to how awe-inspiring Tony Jaa is. We can never go back to before seeing the original ‘Ong Bak’ and being totally shocked and amazed at most of Jaa’s Muay Thai skills.

There are definitely some “holy shit† moments in ‘Ong Bak 2’. When young Tien is captured and sold into slavery, he is thrown into a pit of waist-high muddy water and forced to fight a crocodile. That scene, though a little more subtle than most of the action, is intense. The last half hour of the film is loaded with Jaa fighting one person after another, as if he is progressing through levels on a PS3 game. Some might find the final battles tedious, but I didn’t mind it.   The crow-lady was particularly creepy and should have had a bigger presence in the final battle.

When looking at something like ‘Ong Bak 2’, you have to decide whether or not the fight scenes make up for the story pace. Some will think they do not. I thought they did. The fight sequences are so amazing. There are sequences and martial arts moves so groundbreaking, not only have you never seen them before, you don’t even realize you’ve never seen something like this before.

‘Ong Bak 2’ is not as great a film as the original. It didn’t even need to be called ‘Ong Bak 2’ it has so little to do with the original’s story. Plus, the film is so open-ended, you know they were already planning a sequel to it from the start. However, getting past that, if you can ride through the tedium of the story and enjoy the film for the ass-kicking good time the action provides, you will be far from disappointed. Not exactly a rousing recommendation for something that has garnered so much anticipation, but that’s where it lies.

Overall: 3.75 stars out of 5
