MILE 22 – Review

Here’s the newest effort from another prolific actor/director film making duo. While some directors (Quentin Tarantino, Wes Anderson, Charles O. Russell) have a group of actors they repeatedly work with (on stage I guess they’d be the “rep” company), other directors like to cast the same actor in several of their projects. From the “golden age of Hollywood’ there were duos like John Huston with Humphrey Bogart, and John Ford and John Wayne. In the late seventies Martin Scorsese’s lead of choice was Robert DeNiro, while in recent years Leonardo DiCaprio has been a frequent lead. With Steven Spielberg it’s Tom Hanks (after many flicks with Richard Dreyfuss and Harrison Ford). Now in theatres is the fourth collaboration of actor/director Peter Berg and lead actor Mark Wahlberg. Their previous team-ups were all based on true events: LONE SURVIVOR, DEEPWATER HORIZON, and PATRIOT’S DAY. Now they’ve made a go-for-broke, fictional, high-octane spy thriller, since Wahlberg usually stars in a big Summer action flick. But why so late in the season? For that, we’ve got to go the extra mile. Well several more really, all the way to MILE 22.

As the flick begins, we’ve got go back a few miles, years actually, to an operation conducted by an undercover (very deep undercover) branch of the CIA (like the IMF of Mission:Impossible, it’s “disavowed by the director”). James Silva (Wahlberg) is part of the team commanded by Bishop (John Malkovich), who’s viewing the whole thing from a secret locale along with a crew of agents monitoring live streams from hidden cameras and drones. Despite a few casualties, Silva and his squad get the job done, eliminating some undercover Russian agents working out of a suburban US. home. Cut to the opening titles, run over a montage/ bio of Silva (orphaned, personality issues, quick to violence, and a tactical savant). Jump to the modern day, to the US Embassy in Indocarr (?), where Silva and two of his teammates Alice (Lauren Cohen) and Sam (Ronda Rousey) are stationed. Everyone’s on edge because several containers of a radioactive powder AKA “fear dust” have been stolen. The tip from one of Alice’s informants proved to be a dud. Everyone is then shocked when said informant, local cop Li Noor (Iko Uwais) crashes his car through one of the barriers. He flashes a small cell phone-like pad at the gate cameras. When he’s brought in, he tells Alice and her co-workers that the device has a hard drive with all the location info on the toxins. But only he has the access code to stop the timed erasing of that info. And he’ll only give that code when he’s put on a plane headed out of his homeland. Shortly after some local officials arrive demanding that Noor be given to him, followed by an assassination attempt in the embassy infirmary. With time running out, Bishop’s team is called in to co-ordinate the 22 mile exodus from the embassy to a hidden runway. Is Noor legit? And can they get him (“the package”) to the plane despite a near-endless gauntlet of killers?

Yes there are lots of battles, but few compare to the fight these talented actors had to wage against a clunky script loaded with one-note abrasive characters. The most aggressively obnoxious may be Silva, who proves to be a poor role for the charismatic talented Wahlberg. It’s as though they took everything charming about his macho motor-mouth in THE DEPARTED (which nabbed him an Oscar nom) and twisted it into an arrogant,in your face” bully. You’d want Silva to have your back in a firefight, but you’d dread having any sort of calm conversation with him. Dismissive and cruel aren’t the usual qualities of a thriller hero (and there’s talk of a trilogy). Cohen doesn’t fare much better as the always on edge Alice, who is screaming at her ex-husband (oddly played by Berg) as they play an emotional “tug of war’ over their pre-teen daughter. This leads to her flinging the phone against a wall (wonder how many she goes through in a week). So terrific for so long as Maggie on TV’s “The Walking Dead”, Cohen can’t bring much humanity to another of the script’s screeching “spooks”. The most engaging of the crew may be MMA champ Rousey as the affable Sam, who doesn’t tolerate the tantrums of Silva and Alice. Naturally, this seals her doom. Speaking of champs, martial arts master Uwais is a compelling physical presence, moving like lightning at the center of the film’s best sequences. It’s a shame that his character of Noor seems so aloof and enigmatic with an unchanging sneer, never connecting with any other characters. And then there’s the usually strange Malkovich regulated to be the guy at the screen (he’s in a suit with Converse sneakers…how quirky), barking commands and counting down the minutes. At east he’s sporting a severe buzz-cut hairpiece.

Berg assembles the film in a blender, never letting a shot last more than a few seconds, and making sure the camera is always in motion. This may be an attempt to “amp’ up the tension, but this rapid-fire, staccato style merely wears us down and quickly becomes tedious, as does the near-constant barrage of “f-bombs” (ooo, so edgy). When the screen’s not full of smoke from one of the many explosions (they loves their grenades), the photography is murky and muddy, obscuring much of the picture. The opening attack on the two story house on Christmas Lane (really) feels somewhat realistic with the disorientation of the team, but the endless trek through the city streets becomes repetitive despite the different venues, going from a crowded bakery to a low-rent apartment complex (the Paradise, uh uh), which just reminds us of the superior quality of the RAID films that Uwais headlined. And in the final moments we get a ridiculous triple-cross denouncement that kicks the audience in the…pants…as they flee the theatre. MILE 22 literally screeches to a dead end, and makes us appreciate Cruise, Damon, and Craig even more. Still, that fight in the medical examination room is pretty good, so it gets…

In a visceral modern thriller from the director of Lone Survivor, Mark Wahlberg stars as James Silva, an operative of the CIA’s most highly-prized and little-known unit. Aided by a top-secret tactical command team, Silva must transport an asset (Iko Uwais) who has vital information to a Southeast Asian airfield for extraction before the enemy closes in. MILE 22 also stars Lauren Cohan, Ronda Rousey, and John Malkovich.

Directed by PETER BERG, the film marks the fourth collaboration between  Berg and Wahlberg, a pairing that has resulted in the films Patriots Day, Deepwater  Horizon, and Oscar®-nominated Lone Survivor. The score is by Jeff Russo (Netflix’s “Altered Carbon” and the upcoming film “Lizzie,” starring Chloe Sevigny and Kristen Stewart).

Movie star Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier), together with his boys, Eric (Kevin Connolly), Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) and Johnny (Kevin Dillon), are back…and back in business with super agent-turned-studio head Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven). Some of their ambitions have changed, but the bond between them remains strong as they navigate the capricious and often cutthroat world of Hollywood.

The last time we saw Ari Gold, he had retired from Hollywood and moved to Italy. This is the story of how he came back.

To celebrate the opening of director Doug Ellin’s ENTOURAGE, WAMG invites you to enter for a chance to win an Ari Gold book and soundtrack CD prize package.

ENTOURAGE – The Review

entourage

And now another summertime staple appears at the multiplex: the feature film version of a television series. It’s not a recast movie adaptation of a beloved series from TV’s “golden” or “silver age” like GET SMART or THE FUGITIVE nor one with an intense cult following that like STAR TREK, which has inspired a long-running (over 35 years now) franchise (but who knows?). This series isn’t currently in production as with “The Simpsons” or “The X-Files” (which was still running on Fox TV when the first film premiered). This could be closer to TWIN PEAKS: FIRE WALK WITH ME, which hit theatres mere months after ABC TV’s show left the airwaves. But it’s closest, perhaps, to SEX AND THE CITY which made its movie debut just a few years after wrapping a successful run on “premium” cable channel HBO (as in “It’s not TV…it’s HBO). The new film’s not closer because of subject matter (there is a lot of sex involved, though), but because it also comes from HBO and it ended merely four years ago. Bursting out of the small screen and onto the big screen, comes the rowdy gang of ENTOURAGE.

At the end of season eight, movie superstar Vincent “Vinnie” Chase (Adrian Grenier) was about to be married. As the movie begins, Vinnie’s boys (the entourage), “E” AKA Eric (Kevin Connolly), Salvatore “Turtle” (Jerry Ferrara) and brother Johnny “Drama” Chase (Kevin Dillon) are on a speedboat skipping through the waters near Ibiza, Spain to join him in a “divorce party’  aboard a lush yacht (seems he and his bride called it quits just days into the honeymoon). Vinnie wants to get back to work and calls his ex-agent Ari Gold (Jeremy Piven), who’s now a studio exec and is vacationing with his wife and son in Italy. Vinnie will take the lead in a new big blockbuster only if he can direct it. After the title and credits that cleverly recreate the original show’s opening, it’s several months later and Vinnie needs more cash to complete his epic. Ari must travel to Texas and try to coax some more cash from wealthy investor Larsen McCredle (Billy Bob Thorton). He’ll only cough it up if his dim son Travis (Haley Joel Osment) will go back with Ari to LA and look over the flick so far. We then learn about what Vinnie’s buds have been doing. E, a producer on Vinnie’s “Hyde”, is helping his ex-girlfriend Sloan (Emmanuelle Chriqui) as the birth of their baby nears. Should he try to get back with her? Turtle, now an economic equal to Vinnie thanks to his tequila company, is in pursuit of the gorgeous ultimate fighting champ Ronda Rousey (playing herself). Johnny Drama is pinning his career hopes on a pivotal supporting role in “Hyde”, but still must go to auditions and deal with a tape that leaked to TMZ. Everything soon spins out of control when the obnoxious Travis demands drastic changes in Vinnie’s directing debut. Can Ari get the project back on track without jeopardizing his career along with those of the guys?

Much like the original series, the most entertaining character is not really part of the title group (the mansion’s party boys). I’m speaking of Piven as Ari, the role that deservedly netted him three Emmy awards. Piven’s has remarked in interviews that he plays the role as though he’d just been shot out of a cannon, which holds true this time out. Ari provides a much needed “shot” in the arm, a dose of vitality in the constant orgies and debaucheries. He’s a whirling dervish, the “Tasmanian Devil” in a thousand dollar suit, nipping at any who dare to flick a finger too close. Of the actual quartet, the most compelling may be Dillon as the often tragic Johnny Drama. This was a man who reveled in fame decades ago and now tries desperately to recapture it. But stardom is a flighty, flirty lover and so, he must go out on the cattle calls. Dillon gives what could be a one-note character, a real vulnerability. Unfortunately he’s often the butt of jokes, due to his unchecked libido (and some of the inane gags the script hangs on him). Ferrara mainly mopes about over his MMA dream girl while being teased over his recent weight loss (Turtle was lovably husky in the show’s first few years). Connolly is sometimes the reasonable, restrained, near-adult of the four, other times he’s just the straight man reacting to their outrageous behavior. His romantic subplot never really gels. As for Grenier, after being in the role for eight years, he’s still not really believable as an international screen star. There’s no fire, no charisma (certainly not in the scant scenes we see from “Hyde” a futuristic take on the Robert Louis Stevenson classic tale of dual identities in one man). Plus we never really see him work as a film maker, just as a “chick magnet” for the crew. There’s an entertaining subplot featuring the welcome return of Rex Lee as Ari’s beleaguered ex-aide Lloyd. He wants Ari to give him away at his “big fat gay wedding” (as Ari calls it). Beneath the prickly near-homophobic barbs, we sense a real affection between these very different men. Series regular Chriqui has little to do besides being exasperated with E while Debi Mazar flits in and out of scenes as Shauna.

As for the “newbies”, Osment is quite a revelation as the baby-faced, dead-eyed villain. He’s a very funny wide-eyed clod upon his arrival in LA, but soon the other boot drops and the vengeful brat takes over. Thorton, as his daddy, is southern-fried (oops, Texas BBQ) menace as the tight-fisted money man. Rousey is entertaining as the nearly always scowling cartoon of her tough persona, while Emily Ratajkkowski, playing herself as a possible new Vinnie conquest, seems like she was just awakened from a long nap.

Creator of the show Doug Ellin, directing from his screenplay (with Rob Weiss), tries hard to deliver a nice farewell gift to the fans of the show. Unfortunately the finished product doesn’t seem fresh with references that are well past their expiration date (everything still shoots in LA, no “runaway” productions exist here). And really, after eight seasons, who besides the stars and producers were demanding a movie return (as opposed to other HBO shows)? The endless stream of booze, drugs, and  (often topless) starlets no longer feels like exhilerating fun. It’s more desperate. Perhaps that desperation accounts for the unremitting parade of cameos from the worlds of TV, movies, sports, and music. A couple of them are very funny, but most of these star turns fall flat, with most hurling obscene insults at the fictional characters. Much of the time we’re squinting and saying, “Look there’s….and over there is…” while being distracted from some the stale plot elements. Okay ENTOURAGE, you got your flick, now take your booze and bongs and stagger back to rerun heaven.

THE EXPENDABLES 3 – The Review

BRAY_20130822_EXP3_2096.dng

I really wanted to like THE EXPENDABLES 3 but for them… 3 is not a magic number.

In THE EXPENDABLES 3, Barney Ross(Sylvester Stallone) is back, along with his good pal Lee Christmas (Jason Statham), Gunner Jensen (Dolph Lungren), Yin Yang (Jet Li), and Hale Caesar (Terry Crews), along with some new pals to take on former Expendable Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson), who has traded in his title and became an arms dealer. After almost being killed by his pal Barney before, Stonebanks has made it his mission put to end The Expendables, and Barney is prepared. He beefs up his gang of misfits with new members, and gives their old-school style a reboot. Together, the team must find Stonebanks before he finds them! Despite uniting some of the biggest stars of the past few decades, the first warning sign should have been the PG-13 rating. This film feels extremely tame and boring  compared to the prior two films. Sure, there is a ton of action but we’ve seen that already. The first film was a refreshing action piece that I had been craving since new flicks seem to shy away from mortal, non-superhero or monster action lately. THE EXPENDABLES 2 had me clapping and jumping out of my chair. It was funny, full of action, and in my opinion, trumped the first film. Maybe I was expecting too much… or maybe this film tried to ride coattails of it’s incredible all-star cast rather than developing the story more. Let me rephrase that. It’s the latter.

I have no problem with the cheesy acting in this film. In fact, it is one of the reasons that I love the first two movies. Action films in the 80’s and 90’s had an incredible balance of awesome, butt-kicking scenes and bad one-liners that made us laugh, and stuck in our heads. They were nice throwbacks to the past. They got away with that in two films, but in this installment director Patrick Hughes didn’t quite nail the throwback meets funny approach. I get that parts of the film are parodies of the older stars and their old films, but it feels played out now. Give me something new. BRAY_20130917_EXP3_12291.dng

Because of the throwback to the older action film styles, I’m perfectly fine with the acting in this film. Some of it goes cheesy and campy… which is everything I want and expect from an action film. Having said that, I was not ready for a young Expendables team. Part of The Expendables appeal is that ‘old guys still kicking butt’ attitude. They’re jaded. They’ve been doing this a long time. The new breed of actors and professional fighters that they brought in haven’t earned their stripes yet, so the whole thing felt forced and awkward. Kellan Lutz was the only one that seemed to fit in a bit with the other guys. He hasn’t earned the Expendables status yet, but he felt the most natural to me. Either way, this cast is too big to give everyone the adequate screen time that they deserve. I’d rather have a smaller cast that I can focus on.

Fans of the film will still enjoy seeing their favorite stars on-screen together. There are still some kick-ass action sequences, but with less blood. For me, that sucks. If you are going to go for a combo of the last two films, you can’t say “Yeah, but with less blood.” In what world does that make sense? Patrick Hughes also made the choice to shoot some close-ups in this film that were less than flattering to the aging stars. The guys still look great but maybe they should have backed up a skosh. Sadly, THE EXPENDABLES 3 is nothing new. There are some laughs, and some good action but not enough to make the film stand out.
