AMERICAN DRESSER – Review

Review by Matthew Lowery

In 1986, Vietnam veteran turned filmmaker Oliver Stone brought us the war film Platoon based on his wartime experiences. Among its cast was Tom Berenger as Sgt. Barnes, who has been driven crazy from the shellshock of the conflict. In addition to Charlie Sheen and Willem Dafoe, the film also featured early appearances from Johnny Depp and Keith David. Even 30 plus years after release, the film still holds up and is a classic Vietnam war film. I bring this up because American Dresser features both Berenger and David who happen to have served in Vietnam. I’m not entirely sure if this was just a coincidence, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was somewhat intentional. Also, given that this film concerns two guys driving through the continental US on motorcycles, it feels like Easy Rider. Honestly, the fact that this reminded me of better movies is not promising.

Berenger plays John Moore, whose wife (Gina Gershon in flashbacks) recently died of cancer. At his wife’s funeral, his daughters are unhappy that he’s there, and there’s clearly some tension going on. At the same time, Moore meets up with his former sergeant Charlie (Keith David), who’s recovering from a motorcycle accident. After finding a letter amongst some old belongings, Moore decides to take his bike all the way to Oregon. Charlie decides to tag along, and they soon meet a drifter named Willy (writer-director Carmine Cangialosi) who soon joins them. From there, it becomes a cross-country odyssey as they ride off to Oregon for some seemingly unknown purpose. Along the way, we meet characters like former biker King (Bruce Dern) and widow Vera (Penelope Ann Miller). Some other highlights include going to a party, having a run-in with the law, and learning more about each other.

Probably the best thing I can say about this movie is that it has a truly amazing cast. Between Oscar nominees Tom Berenger and Bruce Dern, you’ve also got character actors like Keith David and Jeff Fahey. While Dern, Gershon, Miller, and Fahey don’t have much screen time, they do shine and make the most of it. Berenger and David do a great job as the two leads, and they have fantastic chemistry with one another. The two really come off as old friends wanting to spend one last ride together despite their major life changes. Honestly, the acting is so good that it’s a shame the material isn’t all that great. While I’m not familiar with Cangialosi’s prior work, you can certainly tell this is a first-timer. His acting is pretty stiff and flat, and his direction is average at best.

The best way I can describe this movie is that it’s about average, nothing special but not awful. It’s got some great actors doing what they do best, but the script and the direction are flat and lifeless. At around 90 minutes, it won’t take up too much of your time if you have nothing better to do. This honestly feels like a direct-to-video movie that happens to have actors who are way too good for this. Overall, American Dresser takes elements from other and much better movies and doesn’t do much with it.

Who Wants to See INCEPTION With the Movie Geeks?

With a track record like Christopher Nolan’s directorial career, anytime he comes out with a new movie it’s sure to be an event. Having made some seriously devout followers with MEMENTO (2000) followed by reinventing the franchise in 2005 with BATMAN BEGINS, followed by 2006’s THE PRESTIGE and the immensely successful Batman sequel THE DARK KNIGHT, I do not hesitate in calling Christopher Nolan one of the greatest new directors out there!

INCEPTION looks to be an exciting sc-fi/thriller filled with eye-popping, mind-boggling special effects. INCEPTION is an original story, written and directed by Christopher Nolan, and features a massive knock-out cast including Leonardo Dicaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ellen page, Cillian Murphy, Michael Caine, Marion Cotillard, Tom Berenger, Pete Postlethwait, Lukas Haas and Kan Watanabe.

Nolan’s ‘Inception’ Begins Production

christopher nolan

The announcement is a few weeks late, but principal photography on Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi ‘Inception’ began on July 13th.   Filming began in England, and the production is looking to span across three continents.   Shooting will also be taking place in Paris, Tangiers, Calgary and Los Angeles. Review: ‘Silent Venom’

silentvenommovie

If you’re looking for a sound financial investment in today’s weakened market, might I suggest dropping your investment dollars into a new sure-fire, fail-safe opportunity that has proven itself stable and consistent? The trend of killer animal movies has never been stronger and perhaps the most attractive killer animal movie sub-genre is with snakes. I say this because, without fail, producers continue to produce killer snake movies and that means they must be making money because no producer goes into a production such as these without knowing a profit is to be had.

‘Silent Venom’ is just one of the newest additions to this genre of DVD goldmines. Veteran schlock-maestro Fred Olen Ray (Evil Toons) directed ‘Silent Venom’, which is a slight stray from some of his more typical films, such as ‘Teenage Cavegirl’ and ‘Tarzeena: Jiggle in the Jungle’. Of course, you may not of heard of him as these Skin-A-Max blockbusters were directed under his pseudonym Nicholas Medina.

The movie stars Luke Perry as disgraced Lt. Commander James O’Neill, who is given one final redeeming mission as delivery boy of a decommissioned submarine being sold to Taiwan. Perry has been suffering a real slump ever since ‘John From Cincinnati’ was cancelled, although some would say it’s been longer than that. While en route to Taiwan, O’Neill’s crew is ordered to divert their mission and rendezvous at Manku Island off the Chinese coast to rescue two military research scientists before a massive Chinese Naval maneuver threatens them and their top secret research.

So, where do the snakes come into play, you ask? Well, can’t you read between the lines? The snakes ARE the top secret research, of course. Dr. Andrea Swanson (Krista Allen) and her beady-eyed assistant Jake (Louis Mandylor) are conducting research on snake venom as a potential life-saver for soldiers against bio-chemical weapons. When their research on the island is threatened, Dr. Swanson orders Jake to destroy the experiments and save only four of the native snakes. Ah, but you know Jake, the opportunistic little weasel he is decides to “sneak” all twenty snakes on board their rescue submarine with hopes of getting rich off selling these rare snakes on the black market.

Need I go any further? As you could imagine, the story takes a relatively obvious direction from here and you might as well fill in the blanks yourself, unless you actually decide to go rent the DVD and see for yourself, which is perfectly acceptable. Personally, I think the movie would have been more effectively titled ‘Snakes on a Submarine’. Consistency is key, you know. Tom Berenger has a small role in the film as well, playing Admiral Bradley Wallace.

Overall, ‘Silent Venom’ is a movie you expect to find playing on a weekend afternoon on the Sci-Fi Channel during some holiday weekend marathon. The visual approach is that of any average Joe taking an expensive HD Steadi-Cam out for a test drive. The special effects are few and far between and, consisting of one short scene featuring a laughable CGI momma snake the size of an 18-wheeler and a handful of quick shots of equally laughable CGI baby snakes the size of anacondas.

Aside from this, the remainder of the creature effects are handled with piles of live snakes squirming around within the submarine, a la the ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ snake scene. Luke Perry even gets to utter a classically Harrison Ford-influenced line of dialogue during his epic fight scene with one of the two mutant baby snakes… “Snakes. I hate ’em”. If you’re looking for a good movie to laugh at and make fun of, then this one would do the trick.

‘Silent Venom’ makes it’s DVD debut on June 2, 2009.

Vinnie Jones is ‘Wedlocked’ and ‘Aces’

vinnie-jones

I just couldn’t resist using that picture. Â  I don’t know what’s funnier, Vinnie Jones walking a catwalk or seeing him casually flip someone the bird.

You gotta give credit to any major production that puts the guy in their film. Â  He is a hardcore badass the likes of very few can match. Â  Well, it appears we’re going to be getting a double dosage of the Juggernaut, bitch, ’cause Jones has signed onto two films, ‘Wedlocked’ and the prequel ‘Smokin’ Aces: Blowback’.

In ‘Wedlocked,’ Jones plays a Croatian mobster who attempts to kidnap his crush, who is on her honeymoon with the American man she married to get U.S. citizenship. Dave Annable and Katharine McPhee previously were cast in writer-director Rob Hedden’s film.

In ‘Blowback,’ Jones plays an assassin gunning for a mob snitch who is hiding in Las Vegas. Tom Berenger, Clayne Crawford, Tommy Flanagan and Maury Sterling also will star in the film. P.J. Pesce is set to helm the direct-to-DVD release. Â  The original ‘Smokin’ Aces’ director, Joe Carnahan, will serve as the film’s producer.

You can next see Mr. Jones cracking skulls in the June release of ‘Year One’.
