2012’s THINK LIKE A MAN was an adaptation of comedian Steve Harvey’s New York Times best-selling book Act Like A Lady, Think Like a Man, where audiences met a group of close friends whose romantic entanglements with the women they pursued made for plenty of sharp comedy and heartfelt reflection once Harvey’s generous relationship advice was added to the mix.
In the end, the non-committer proposed, the dreamer won the heart of the independent woman, the player settled down with the 90-day-rule stickler, the mama’s boy broke free of his mother’s grip and vowed to put the cute single mom first, and the happily divorced guy went back to his wife.
In THINK LIKE A MAN TOO, the couples are back, along with new stories and funny storylines.
Directed by Tim Story (RIDE ALONG), the sequel takes all the characters to Sin City and drops them in the middle of everything that it’s known for – the lights, the gambling and the glitz.
Jeremy (Jerry Ferrara) and Kristen (Gabrielle Union) are trying to have a baby. Businesswoman Lauren (Taraji P. Henson) is offered a promotion in NYC from her boss (Kelsey Grammer) while budding chef Dominic (Michael Ealy) is considering a job in Vegas. Both are trying to make their relationship work, but their successful careers could potentially take them in different directions. Mya (Meagan Good) loves Zeke (Romany Malco), but in Vegas he’s known as Zeke the Freak by some.
The bride and groom, Michael (Terrence J) and Candace (Regina Hall) are getting married, but the happy couple’s dynamic is further complicated by the fact that Michael’s mother, Loretta (Jenifer Lewis), continues to be an intrusive element in their relationship
Then there is best man Cedric (Kevin Hart). He sets out to be “the best best man in the history of best men.” With a goal he’s obsessed with, he spends way more money than he has for the weekend on a lavish suite at Caesars Palace. He thinks that it is $4,000 a night, when it’s really $40,000 a night and winds up with a $80,000 bill. His efforts to try to win the money, along with everyone’s misadventures, threatens to derail Candace and Michael’s wedding.
Can these relationships have a “happily ever after” against the backdrop of Vegas? It’s a funny rom-com, so the answer is, of course.
Being in Sin City, dueling bachelor and bachelorette parties go full throttle.
The women rule this movie and get more screen time in the sequel. They “borrow” the guys’ party bus and head off for their own shenanigans at Planet Hollywood’s Gallery Nightclub. A scene recreating BBD’s ‘Poison,’ combined with karaoke and dancing, turns into a music video that’s really fun. It is one of the film’s most memorable moments. That is until the girls decide to continue the night by heading over to The Hustler Club for the Best Male Dancer contest.
Meanwhile, the guys try to help Cedric and his hotel bill by entering The Hustler Club’s contest and lo and behold the two parties come together.
As the ladies are cheering on Candace up on the stage for a lap dance, a raucous brawl in the club goes down, and everyone is hauled down to the local jail on the eve of the wedding.
Along the way in THINK LIKE A MAN TOO come a few new characters. Isaac (Adam Brody), Michael’s fraternity brother from college, is hell-bent on his friend having a great time in Vegas, while Terrell (David Walton), Michael’s other fraternity brother, is a surprise to all of Michael’s friends, and turns out to be the life of the party.
In addition to the return of Cedric’s wife Gail (Wendy Williams), actor Dennis Haysbert joins the cast as his character (Candace’s Uncle Eddie) comes in to save the day when he preoccupies Loretta from the bachelorette party. With the real onscreen chemistry between Lewis and Haysbert, someone needs to give these fine actors a film of their own.
Look for some funny cameos from Floyd Mayweather, TV reality star Coco and Drake.
Kudos to the film’s behind the scenes team. The score is by Christopher Lennertz, costume design by Salvador Perez, Chris Cornwell was the movie’s production designer, director of photography is Chris Duskin and editing by Peter S. Elliot (IRON MAN 3). The film’s R&B soundtrack is filled with wonderful songs from Mary J. Blige.
In the end, the craziness of the weekend brings everybody closer together and the film comes complete with flowers, romance and fireworks.
Grab your girlfriends this weekend and go see the hilarious THINK LIKE A MAN TOO.
Director Tim Story’s THINK LIKE A MAN TOO opens in theaters this weekend on June 20. The film is the follow-up to the hit ensemble comedy THINK LIKE A MAN and reunites the original cast, including Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy, Jerry Ferrara, Regina Hall, Gabrielle Union and Taraji P. Henson.
Story teamed up again with composer Christopher Lennertz for the film’s score.
He first made a splash with his breakout score for ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS, which has grossed over $360 million worldwide. Since then he’s proven his steadfast talent with films like the star-studded HORRIBLE BOSSES, and Universal’s box office smash RIDE ALONG.
Lennertz’s other recent scores include the hit comedy IDENTITY THIEF and the critically acclaimed drama THANKS FOR SHARING with Mark Ruffalo & Gwyneth Paltrow.
While his knack for comedy is undeniable in films like THINK LIKE A MAN, he’s also contributed his unique style to many hit family films including HOP and CATS & DOGS: THE REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE. Furthermore, he’s tapped into the indie world, scoring films like Alfred P. Sloan winner ADAM (Fox Searchlight), GIRL IN PROGRESS, and TORTILLA HEAVEN, which garnered the very first FilmMusic award for Best Independent Score.
Lennertz has written the music for NBC’s “Revolution” (J.J. Abrams, Jon Favreau) and his long time run on the series “Supernatural” led to an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Underscore, while on the video game side, he’s had hits like Steven Spielberg’s Medal of Honor series.
Lennertz has worked with legendary artists such as Basil Poledouris, Michael Kamen, Dave Grusin, Alan Menken, The RZA, and Alien Ant Farm. He has collaborated with members of Pearl Jam, The Beastie Boys, The Dave Matthews Band, Jurassic 5, and Jane’s Addiction. His groundbreaking collaboration with Ozomatli on Street Signs garnered a Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock Album.
Still early in his career, he has already scored 43 feature films, 7 network series, many of the biggest interactive titles, and has spent weeks on the Billboard charts. Christopher Lennertz continually draws excitement as one of the freshest and most versatile young composers in Hollywood.
During our phone interview, Lennertz and I talked about his THINK LIKE A MAN TOO score, with its Vegas and R&B sounds, as well as his upcoming projects – the new TV project “Galavant” by Alan Menken and films HORRIBLE BOSSES 2 and Kevin Hart films, RIDE ALONG 2 and THE WEDDING RINGER.
WAMG: I recently saw the film and it’s really funny. Terrence J and Regina Hall visited St. Louis to intro the screening earlier this month. The crowd loved them and the film.
Christopher Lennertz: Oh that’s awesome. I love both of them.
WAMG: You’ve worked with director Tim Story on the first film and RIDE ALONG. It’s developed into a working partnership. When were you brought onto this project?
CL: Pretty much from the start. Tim had just finished RIDE ALONG and that’s done really well. Tim and I get along great. He said, “are you in?” and I said, “of course.” And that was that.
WAMG: One of the funniest parts of the movie includes Kevin Hart.
Cedric is the best man of the wedding, and according to Kevin Hart, he sets out to be “the best best man in the history of best men.” With that goal in mind, he spends way more money than he has on Caesars Palace’s lavish, ultra exclusive Constantine Villa. He runs around the multiroom mini-mansion that he has rented for the weekend like a kid on too much caffeine.
The title on the soundtrack is called ‘Villa Run Around Scene’ and the music is perfect for his character. It’s very frantic. Was that written specifically for him or did you compose it after seeing the footage?
CL: They shot it and I wrote it after. I saw him running around and I knew it had to be crazy. We decided in this movie to give some of his quirkiness a gospel-feel. In one scene, after he’s asked to be the Best Man, he walks away singing ‘This Little Light Of Mine’ and for some reason it just stuck in my head.
I thought it would be really funny to do Kevin’s music where he’s running around his hotel room all frenetic in a gospel way, with him clapping along with loud guitar music underneath. Along with Todd Bozung (supervising music editor) and the rest of team, it just worked out.
WAMG: The audience was crying during the scene.
CL: He’s got a couple of those moments. Obviously that one and where he’s dancing are just hilarious.
WAMG: The “POISON” Bell Biv Devoe remix with the actresses is a scream. Regina Hall mentioned how they had to go into a studio to record their voices. How much were you involved with that?
CL: The writers came up with that first. Tim (Story) decided on set to shoot it like a ‘90’s music video along with a fish-eye lensed camera. It’s great!
WAMG: There are so many good songs throughout the film. How much were you involved with that?
CL: The songs are mostly picked by the director and music supervisor. Tim also worked very closely with Mary J. Blige to pick the right music.
The songs in both movies are phenomenal, but the songs in this one work perfectly.
WAMG: There’s a heavy R&B vibe throughout… totally what you’d hear in a 60’s Hollywood Vegas movie. It has big band style brass, as well as hints of old school, Rat Pack rhythms. Where did all these varying themes come from?
CL: I talked to Tim while he was shooting and the idea was to take what we did in the first movie, which was a very R&B, Hip-Hop thing, add Vegas to that and take it up a level. So we added more brass, we definitely added some of those big moments at the casinos where we went into full Rat-Pack style. Even the romantic themes – we went even further.
Director Tim Story on the set of Screen Gems’ THINK LIKE A MAN TOO.
We wanted all the special moments in the movie to have an even bigger impact on the audience.
We decided the whole score should have the same energy as the first one, in terms of who the characters are, but then take it up a notch because they’re in Vegas and the relationships have developed a bit. We had a great time. The brass sounds make you feel like they’re in Vegas
WAMG: What kind of instruments did you go with?
CL: The band that we went with in the original movie was made up of traditional R&B – guitar, drums, percussion, a lot of organs and pianos. Very much like a 70’s sound, but brought up-to-date. Like an Earth, Wind and Fire. Then we added a bigger, fuller horn section on this movie.
Stylistically we added writing with more of a jazzy flair for Vegas and the actual orchestra, for the sweeter parts, we went bigger with that as well.
WAMG: It’s a fun soundtrack all around with the mixture of your score and the songs from Mary J. Blige and Nikki Minaj. It’s a good interspersing of all the sounds.
CL: Thank you. I think it worked out great! I think the movie is really great. It’s just as funny, if not funnier than the first one. Then it’s got this great ending where the last ten minutes – it’s a date movie. It’s a great romantic comedy. I think guys will like it, girls will like it.
WAMG: It’s a fun summer movie.
CL: I think the release date is right and people are ready for a romantic comedy. Go see it and have fun for a night.
WAMG:What’s it like to go between film and TV?
CL: For me it’s not all that different. It comes down to schedule – TV is much faster. Writing music, whether it’s TV or film, drama or comedy or horror, it’s all the same kind of idea, it’s just getting it done. With that said, I love the idea that I can go from one thing to the next. A lot of the movies I do are action comedies like IDENTITY THIEF or HORRIBLE BOSSES and a lot of the TV I’ve done are more serious like SUPERNATURAL or REVOLUTION. It’s nice for me to be able to go back and forth. The video game “Medal Of Honor” was like a SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. I love to be able to switch around and be able to write different kinds of music. It keeps me from getting stuck or getting bored.
WAMG: You are currently working with Oscar and Tony-winner Alan Menken on ABC’s new musical comedy “Galavant”. What’s that show about?
CL: “Galavant” is a show you’ve never seen before! I’m really happy ABC is going to put it on the air because it’s really so smart, but yet hilarious. The best way to describe it basically is as if THE PRINCESS BRIDE was on TV every week as a musical.
It’s very raunchy. It’s got three new songs a week by Alan Menken who’s a god in terms of writing songs and music with all his Oscars. He’s an absolute genius. More than anything I wanted to do the show to learn from him, watch how he does things and work together on the show.
The show is absolutely hilarious. It’s got knights and kings and queens who are dancing and singing, but yet it’s very, very adult and very, very clever. A lot of innuendo and plus really quick wit. The cast is great – they all sing. People are not going to believe how good it is.
WAMG: What do you have coming up on the film side?
CL: The next one out is HORRIBLE BOSSES 2 (Warner Bros). That’s out in November. Again, that one’s even funnier than the first one.
Then after that I have a great movie called THE WEDDING RINGER (Screen Gems) that comes out in January. It’s Kevin Hart like you’ve never seen him. He teams up with Josh Gad (“Book of Mormon,” Olaf in FROZEN). Plus it also stars Kaley Cuoco (TV’s “Big Bang Theory).
In “The Wedding Ringer,” Jimmy (Hart) provides best man services for socially challenged guys, who – for whatever reason – have no one close enough to agree to stand by them on the day of their wedding. Doug (Gad) a groom-to-be, has found himself in just such a situation, but, to make matters worse, he fabricates the names of not only a best man but nine groomsmen as well. When all else fails, Doug seeks out Jimmy’s services to carry out a charade designed to make Doug look his best, but threatens to destroy everything if it fails.
Jeremy Garelick (writer of “The Break-Up”) is directing “The Wedding Ringer” from a screenplay he wrote with Jay Lavender (“The Break-Up”).
CL: It’s really along the lines, comedy-wise, of something like OLD SCHOOL or ROAD TRIP. It’s really crazy and funny. I think people are going to quote it for a long time.
The great part about it is that during the not-so-funny parts, Kevin gets to do some amazing acting at the end besides just being funny. His character is a very sweet “best friend, best man” kinda guy that really makes everybody cry. It’s pretty big and a great role for him. It’s a great movie. I think it will do really, really well.
WAMG: Tim Story is currently in pre-production on RIDE ALONG 2 (Universal has announced a January 2016 release date). Will we hear your score again in the sequel?
CL: I’m pretty sure I’m on board for that. While I haven’t officially signed up yet, Tim wants me to do it – whatever he wants me to do, I pretty much will do. The first one was so much fun. I grew up in the 90’s and I was in college when Ice Cube was so huge. He’s such a force. I’d love to do another movie with him.
The other thing with RIDE ALONG 2 is it will start shooting in about three weeks and will be even bigger and better than the first one. A lot more action, a lot more everything. They’re shooting in Miami, Atlanta , so I think it’s going to be a really big, funny movie.
The Think Like a Man Too score album will be available on June 20th on Varèse Sarabande Records.
Director Tim Story’s THINK LIKE A MAN TOO opens in theaters next Friday on June 20. The film is the follow-up to the hit ensemble comedy THINK LIKE A MAN, which Story also directed and earned over $96 million at the worldwide box office.
In the sequel, which was inspired by Steve Harvey’s best-selling book Act Like a Lady, Think Like A Man, all the couples are back for a wedding in Las Vegas. But plans for a romantic weekend go awry when their various misadventures get them into some compromising situations that threaten to derail the big event.
Screen Gems’ THINK LIKE A MAN TOO reunites the original cast, including Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy, Jerry Ferrara, Regina Hall, Gabrielle Union, Terrence J and Taraji P. Henson.
As part of a lively roundtable discussion, WAMG sat down with two of the film’s stars, Regina Hall and Terrence J to talk about the sequel.
Regina Hall plays single mom, Candace. Candace is a woman who gives everything to her 6-year-old son, Duke. She finally mastered the art of integrating a relationship with her responsibilities as a single mother and met Michael, who wants all the things she has to offer. Then she realizes he’s already taken – by his mama. Michael mans up, cuts the cord and dedicates himself to her, and they are now engaged. But his mother, Loretta, still not a fan of Candace being with her son, continues to be a thorn in her side. While in Vegas, Loretta and Candace face off and once again, Michael has to make a decision.
Hall landed her first studio feature with a small part in the film The Best Man. She left a lasting impression on viewers with her portrayal of the character Candy and co-starred in the sequel, Best Man Holiday, in 2013.
She has also had supporting roles in Love & Basketball and Disappearing Acts. Adding comedy to her repertoire, Hall’s career further expanded when she won the part of high-school-aged Brenda Meeks, in the comedy-horror spoof Scary Movie. After starring in all sequels of the Scary Movie franchise, she’s appeared in leading roles in such films as Think Like a Man, Paid In Full, Malibu’s Most Wanted, First Sunday and more.
She has also starred alongside Jamie Foxx and Gerard Butler in the blockbuster thriller Law Abiding Citizen, and starred opposite Chris Rock and Martin Lawrence in Death at a Funeral.
Terrence J plays mama’s boy, Michael.
Endearingly handsome with earnest eyes and a rare combination of masculinity and sensitivity, Michael is seemingly the perfect guy. The only problem was his commitment to one woman above all others – his mama. But Michael grew up, cut the cord and stepped up for his woman, Candace, and makes the ultimate commitment, marriage.
He travels to Las Vegas with his band of brothers and their significant others for his bachelor party and wedding weekend. His intention is to have a great weekend with his friends.
However, Michael’s best man, Cedric, has elaborate plans that may threaten the most important day of his life.
Terrence J is a television and film actor, philanthropist, author and TV host. Terrence co-anchors E! NEWS.
Jenkins had a huge 2013 with roles in the Fox Searchlight feature film Baggage Claim, alongside Paula Patton, Djimon Hounsou, Derek Luke, Taye Diggs, Jill Scott, and Christina Milian and Jenkins also appeared alongside Chris Brown, Josh Holloway and Josh Peck in the Screen Gems feature Battle of the Year.
After signing a book deal with HarperCollins’ It Books, Terrence’s first literary work, The Wealth of My Mother’s Wisdom, debuted in September 2013. His role as Michael inspired him to take an in-depth look at his own mother and her extraordinary journey of raising him while still a teenager herself. Many of the successful moments in Terrence’s life, both personally and professionally, have been credited to the lessons that his mother taught him, and he’s proud to share her words of wisdom to inspire others.
Terrence is also a spokesperson for Ronald McDonald’s House Charities Future Achievers Scholarship Campaign, a mentor with Steve Harvey’s Disney Dreamers Academy and an avid supporter of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Newark. Born in Queens, New York, Jenkins spent his childhood years in Rocky Mount, N. C., and received a Bachelor of Science degree in broadcast journalism from North Carolina A&T University.
The two of them arrived with lunch for us from the St. Louis restaurant Sweeties and during our meal (cornbread, BBQ, okra and dessert), Regina and Terrence talked about reuniting for the film, revisiting their characters and being a part of one of this summer’s funniest movies.
What do you like best about the movie?
Terrence J: We didn’t take it too far. We did have fun with it.
Regina Hall: It’s a good family movie. You can take your Mom and kids to see it.
It captures that, “In Vegas anything can go wrong” feeling, but it doesn’t capture some of the stuff you wouldn’t want your family to see.
Jenifer Lewis is from St. Louis. How was it like working with her?
Terrence J: Jenifer plays my Mom and plays “Candace’s” arch-enemy. She’s brilliant and one of the veterans on our cast. She’s a team leader. We learned a lot from her and she’s hilarious. She’s played everyone’s mother in films – from Angela Bassett to Will Smith to Tupac Shakur. In between takes, she would tell us these amazing stories of being on the set with Tupac on his first film and what Will Smith was like at 22. Jenifer is just an incredibly strong woman.
What was it like getting back together again? In the movie, it doesn’t look like you skipped a beat.
TJ: The good thing is that everybody loves each other – it was like coming home from a summer break. It felt good to be back with the cast and everyone has done so well since the first movie. Kevin Hart has turned into one of the biggest movie stars in Hollywood. Regina’s been working nonstop with 3 or 4 films. Gabrielle Union, Taraji P. Henson, everybody has been working. Jerry Ferrara has been working on the ENTOURAGE movie. I’ve been with E! News. So everyone’s been working. It was such a joyous occasion. We were in one of the greatest cities in America – Vegas was so fun.
What stories do you have Regina from THINK LIKE A MAN TOO?
RH: It was a great shoot, but you’re in Vegas and we had to film when places were closed, like at 3 or 4 am. You’re getting hair and makeup at 1:30 am. We had to wait for places to close. There’s a strip club scene that we couldn’t shoot in until 5am, so we had these small windows in which to film. To see those places when they’re empty – it’s an interesting phenomenon. No one’s around, no one is drinking. No traffic. It was an interesting experience to be in Vegas when there’s nothing going on. It was reverse of a city that’s known for so many things.
What was your favorite scene in the movie?
RH: I loved seeing how every scene played out after reading the script, especially the ones between me and Jenifer. Terrence came with so much emotion. He was so mad at her. It was really wonderful to watch.
TJ: My favorite part of the movie is a part that they guys are not even in. It’s where they sing this version of “Poison”
In the film, Sonia (LaLa Anthony), Mya (Meagan Good), Lauren (Taraji P. Henson), Candace (Regina Hall), Kristen (Gabrielle Union) and Tish (Wendi McLendon-Covey) do their best rendition of BBD’s hit sing ‘Poison’ for the crowd at Planet Hollywood’s Gallery Nightclub. It ‘s hilarious and could be a stand alone music video.
RH: I read in the script – “The girls go up and sing “Poison”. Then we’re told we’d have to go into a studio to record it. And we did it over and over. We had a vocal coach. I’m thinking how are we going to do this?
TJ: All the script said was, “The boys are at the pool and the girls are at a strip club singing “Poison”. You don’t even think about it – it’s just words on a page.
Tim (Story) came up with it the morning of – the day we were shooting it. It was like a competition between the guys and the girls. Everyday we’d come on set. We’d see the girls walking through the lobby and would tell them, “we just shot video at the pool that’s gonna kill you” and they’d come back with, “yeah, we just shot Poison in a strip club!” What’s that?! And then you watch the movie and think OH MY GOD! The girls just kill the guys in this movie. Hands down, they murder us.
In the first movie, the guys were all together and the girls weren’t. What was it like to be all together in this movie in Vegas?
RH: It was so much fun. I really got to know all the women on set. They’re all so funny and smart. It was just so great.
Working with Tim Story (director) again proved especially appealing. He is the best. There’s just this freedom that he allows you, which makes you more confident as an actor, especially comedically. We couldn’t ask for anything better.
Who could you relate to the most?
TJ: I really love the 5 characters in the film. Any young man, like myself, who thought they were a player with the right girl, and I’ve been called out on things in the past. A first job, a girlfriend, your relationship with your Mom, sticking by your friends – I can relate to all these things and to these characters. It’s what’s so unique and special about the movie.
What’s the one thing you hope audiences take away from the movie?
RH: The heart of the relationships. It’s really about the friendships. I love how the men in the movie are all so different. It’s such a diverse cast. The movie looks like life and the way we deal with each other and how special those bonds are.
TJ: Sometimes with movies, they formulate these contrived friendships that don’t seem realistic where, oh, here’s the token black friend with white people or here’s the token white person we’re putting into this film. It’s not like that. In real life, black people and white people are friends.
RH: You see where “Michael” and his friends – you see why they’re such good friends.
This was your first major role as a lead. How was that transition?
TJ: Do we look like the leads in this film?
It’s not Kevin (Hart), it’s you. It’s your story. You’re the catalyst.
RH: We’ve been hearing that a lot. We never thought that.
TJ: You watch THE HANGOVER movie and the people getting married, they’re not the leads – it’s more like Bradley Cooper. It’s hard for me to look at it like that. I’m just so blessed to work with Regina and I admire her work so much. She’s just so professional and such a lady.
In another funny scene, the women travel to The Hustler Club for Candace’s bachelorette party not knowing that Cedric (Kevin Hart) and the guys are preparing to take the stage as male strippers (and in full costume) to clear a debt.
A comical knock-down, drag out fight ensues with both the men and the women involved.
How much fun is the big skirmish at Hustler?
TJ and RH: That was so much fun!
RH: It went on a lot longer than what you see on screen. Plus we hadn’t seen their costumes either. It was so much fun filming the jail scenes.
When you watch all these scenes, you realize the actors are really in it.
TJ: I was hoping we’d shoot the scene – with us in costume, up on stage – like in a dream sequence, so that we could add to the end of the movie while the credits were rolling.
You’ve been a part of Wayans Brothers SCARY MOVIE franchise as well as BEST MAN HOLIDAY. What do you like about these big ensemble films?
RH: I love that I’ve gotten to learn from so many people. I started kind of late and getting to work with the Wayans was so interesting. I never thought of myself as comedic, so having a part in BEST MAN was a learning experience.
Being with a large group of actors in a film feels very safe. You get to learn from the rest of the cast. There’s no pressure, so it’s been really delightful. If the movie does well, you’re part of that.
TJ: If it does well, great. If it doesn’t, we can blame Kevin.
