Astronaut Matt Damon Featured In First Photos From Ridley Scott’s THE MARTIAN

91322

Over the holiday weekend, 20th Century Fox released various photos of Matt Damon from the upcoming sci-fi action film, THE MARTIAN.

Based on a best-selling novel by Andy Weir, and helmed by director Ridley Scott, the cast includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.

The film will be released in 3D on November 25, 2015.

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive.

Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return.

After “the instruments on his suit” convince Damon’s crew that he’s dead, Scott says they decide to hightail it back to Earth, but “discover two and a half months later that he’s alive.” Unfortunately, he won’t be that way for very long, “because frankly he’s got 28 days to live – and that’s if everything goes well for him,” the Prometheus director adds. So, “instead of him collapsing into terror – He knuckles down and actually starts to work out” how long he can survive. (via People)

In April, the first footage of 20th Century Fox’s movie was shown at CinemaCon 2015. Described by io9 as “amazing,” the “footage cuts from famous face to famous face, everyone preparing for a massive NASA launch, and the screen fills with glorious images from the red planet (this is directed by Ridley Scott, after all). It’s truly beautiful.”

With a screenplay by Drew Goddard (WORLD WAR Z, CABIN IN THE WOODS), THE MARTIAN’s impressive below-the-line artists include cinematographer Dariusz Wolski, editor Pietro Scalia, and Production Designer Arthur Max.

What do you need to bring, and how do you minimize the need for delivery of future supplies in order to establish a sustained human presence on a planet 140 million miles away from Earth?

NASA is embarking on an ambitious journey to Mars and earlier this month announced a challenge inviting the public to write down their ideas, in detail, for developing the elements of space pioneering necessary to establish a continuous human presence on the Red Planet. This could include shelter, food, water, breathable air, communication, exercise, social interactions and medicine, but participants are encouraged to consider innovative and creative elements beyond these examples.

Time to Die! BLADE RUNNER Midnights at The Tivoli This Weekend

blade-header

“I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time… like tears in rain… Time to die.”

blade-runner_2

BLADE RUNNER plays midnights this weekend (April 24th and 25th) at the Tivoli as part of their Reel Late at the Tivoli Midnight series.

blade-runner-follow-up

BLADE RUNNER is the movie that all the other “sci-fi” films of the last 20 years have been trying, unsuccessfully, to live up to. Some of them have achieved more compelling action, some spiffy CGI effects, but none of them can match the grandeur of this film’s vision or its colorful gallery of characters. It’s a film meant to be savored on the big screen and lucky St. Louis film fans will have that opportunity this weekend midnights at The Tivoli.

bladerunner-still1-lg

The film’s action stylings and detective story plot are mostly a cover for the issues it broods over: what is it that makes us human? How indeed do I know that I am human? BLADE RUNNER took sci-fi film and pushed it into adult territory, just when the Star Wars revolution was threatening to turn the tide forever in favor of “space opera”. BLADE RUNNER brought us back to the days of the German silents (especially METROPOLIS) in which a dark, uncertain future was coupled with doubts about the worth or meaning of human existence.

blade-runner-6

There is a lot to look at with BLADE RUNNER, with beautiful photography, and inspired direction by Ridley Scott and a batch of memorable performances from the excellent supporting cast. Rutger Hauer as Roy Batty steals the movie from the somewhat disinterested Harrison Ford, particularly in the film’s stunning finale. BLADE RUNNER is also notable for the depth of detail that was put into its futuristic vision. Everything enforces the notion that this is an Earth we would not want to live in, and somewhat oblique dialogue occasionally hints that Deckard would in fact not be on Earth if he was healthy enough to leave. This is a future where you can’t even order as much food as you want at a restaurant.

DARK STAR: H.R. GIGER’S WORLD Documentary Opening May 15; In St. Louis June 5

dk_poster

After a successful film festival run, the definitive documentary DARK STAR: H.R. GIGER’S WORLD opens in theaters across the U.S. and Canada starting on May 15th, released by Icarus Films and KimStim.

Surrealist artist H. R. Giger (1940-2014) terrified audiences with his Oscar-winning monsters in Ridley Scott’s ALIEN. Sci-fi, horror, music, album covers, tattoos and fetish art have been influenced by his dark, intricate paintings and sculptures depicting birth, death and sex.

Both a mesmerizing introduction to Hansruedi Giger’s oeuvre and a must-see for Giger devotees, Belinda Sallin’s definitive documentary DARK STAR: H. R. GIGER’S WORLD shares the intimate last years of the artist’s life and reveals how deeply he resided within his own artistic visions.

The film will play in St. Louis from June 5 – June 10 as part of the Webster University Film Series.

Click here for a complete list of upcoming engagements.

How did Sallin come up with the title?

After the first few times I visited him in Oerlikon, Hansruedi seemed increasingly like a fixed star to me. He stayed in his house, hardly ever leaving. He could only be lured out of his house for a meal at a nice restaurant, or for one of his responsibilities of course, like a book signing or an exhibition opening. Otherwise Hansruedi stayed in his house, that very unusual home of his.

Anybody who wanted to visit Hansruedi or plan an exhibition with him, publish a book or make a film with him, as I did, had to go to Oerlikon. There Hansruedi would sit at the kitchen table, master of his own world. His friends, assistants or business partners all orbited around him like satellites. That’s how the title came to me: Hansruedi, the Fixed Star of his World, a Dark Star. DARK STAR – HR Giger’s World.

There was also a film in the ’70s entitled Dark Star, directed by John Carpenter, written by Dan O’Bannon. O’Bannon became a good friend of Hansruedi in the late ’70s. He wrote the script for Alien, of course. When Ridley Scott set out to find an artist to draw and design his monster and the alien planets, O’Bannon showed him Giger’s book “Necronomicon”. All Ridley Scott said was, “That’s it!” Shortly afterwards, Scott, O’Bannon and Giger wrote film history together. I really like the fact that our film title includes a reference to that time.

Bildschirmfoto+2014-08-28+um+18.47.44

Behind the shuttered windows and ivy-covered walls of his residence in Zurich, Switzerland, DARK STAR brings viewers into Giger’s mysterious realm: from the first skull he was given by his father at the age of six, to macabre dinner parties with his close-knit team, to the grisly souvenirs from his time spent on the ALIEN set and reminiscences about model Li Tobler, Giger’s one-time muse, whose suicide reverberates throughout his work.

The film also addresses Giger’s complex relationship to the art world, where he defied traditional categories and embraced commercial projects for musicians including Debbie Harry, Korn, Emerson, Lake and Palmer and the Dead Kennedys.

Fittingly enshrined in a museum dedicated to his work, Giger’s output includes sculpture, painting, drawing, film and architecture, integrating meticulous technique with a instantly-recognizable sensibility that has inspired generations of nightmares.

EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS – The Review

Exodus-Gods-and-Kings

The story of Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt is a powerful and iconic story that people of multiple faiths have come to know and embrace. There’s a burning bush, ten devastating plagues, a parting of the sea, and a triumphant journey towards freedom. For a story filled with so much, Ridley Scott offers it so little. EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS is never boring thanks in large part to a strong visual design, but never does it grab hold of your mind or heart as much as your eyes.

Moses (Christian Bale) is a natural leader as evident when the film begins. He rides into battle alongside Ramses (Joel Edgerton), the son of the Pharaoh (John Turturro) who adopted Moses as a son long ago. But it is upon the Pharaoh’s death that Moses has to see Ramses now claim the throne and rule Egypt, whom he does with an oppressive hand. When word gets out around the kingdom that Moses is in fact born a Jewish slave, he is immediately cast out. He survives the brutal trek through the desert and meets a young woman in a small town that he eventually marries. Late one night, Moses is called to a mountain peak where he becomes trapped in a mud-pit and encounters a burning bush and a young boy (the voice of God) who tells Moses he must lead the captive slaves out of Egypt.

EXODUS is a film that tells the story that many have read a number of times in the good book but in a way without any inspiration or meaning behind it. As should be expected from Ridley Scott at this point in his career, he fills the screen with lush visuals, decadent costumes, and CGI spectacle (including some appropriately visceral plague sequences), but rarely does he attach any emotions to all the holy rolling. For a story that seems ripe for interpretation and spiritual discourse, rarely does it delve into the consequences or significance of Moses’ actions. It is not all Scott’s or the story’s fault either. Christian Bale doesn’t really give us someone to root for. I struggled to connect with his journey because his character comes across as so impassive to the world around him. Bale seems to be going through the motions much like the writers and director of this film.

exodus_gods-and-kings_still2

Ridley Scott’s attempt at delivering a new bible classic like THE TEN COMMANDMENTS that came before it ultimately fails because it’s simply a straightforward retelling of the classic biblical story. Never do you feel that there’s a desire to delve deeper into the meaning behind the story. The internal struggle of Moses or the historical significance of the Hebrew people being enslaved for over 400 years is never really called into question. Instead all we get is the standard power-hungry king story that is so overplayed in films, and which, I would argue, completely outshines the story of Moses. Joel Edgerton actually does a decent job even if he really does feel like an actor in garish make up the entire time. In fact, the most interesting character in the entire long ordeal is God who speaks to Moses through the image of a child. The boy’s short stature and young appearance is contrary to the harsh and argumentative tone that God uses to communicate with Moses. It’s an interesting dynamic that transpires like a clever one-act play you would see performed at a college theater.

I’ve come to acknowledge that Ridley Scott has had more misses in his career than hits. Much more in fact. Though his masterpieces are truly that, it is unfortunate that his legacy continues to be tarnished with recent misfires such as this. At this point, you could barely fill one of the Commandment tablets with films of his worth preaching from the Mount.

Alberto Iglesias’s EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS Soundtrack Available Digitally on Dec 9; CD Dec 16

81afS2gytmL._SL1500_

For the upcoming epic action-adventure EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS, acclaimed director Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator) has recruited three-time Academy Award nominee Alberto Iglesias to compose the film score.  The soundtrack will be from Sony Classical digitally on December 9 and on CD on December 16.

20th Century Fox releases EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS in theaters everywhere on December 12.

When it came to the music for his visually stunning movie, Ridley Scott has opted as much for delicate arrangements as orchestral bombast – a noteworthy decision considering the truly monumental production. Strings, choir, featured soloists and soulful vocals complement Iglesias’ trademark composing style in this breathtaking score.

Iglesias provides the biblical material a historic yet modern feel. Given the challenge of maintaining the upper hand in such a large project, the highly versatile Iglesias skillfully masters the gap between subtle emotion and martial brutality.

The recording of EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS took place at the legendary Abbey Road Studios, where John Williams recorded the “Star Wars” saga and Howard Shore his epic The Lord of the Rings.

DF-04130_R - Christian Bale stars as Moses in EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS.

While primarily known for his European scores for the past 20 years and for his work with arthouse favorite Pedro Almodovar, Iglesias has received Academy Award nominations for his scores for Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy, The Constant Gardener and The Kite Runner. Iglesias also received BAFTA nominations for all three scores and a Golden Globe nomination for The Kite Runner. Among his many works with Almodovar, Iglesias won Best Score at the European Film Awards and the World Soundtrack Award for Composer of the Year for Volver. With The Skin I Live In, Iglesias became the all-time leading Goya recipient in the history of Spanish Cinema and was honored with Composer of the Year Award at the 2011 Hollywood Film Festival.

Iglesias has proven his unique skill for creating smart, authentic and cleverly designed thriller scores on many occasions. His music is sophisticated, richly detailed and emotionally compelling all at once. He is also a master at adding elements of world music into a more traditional musical context. Iglesias manages to seamlessly bring dramatic ideas together to an overwhelmingly emotional whole and is extremely gifted at composing music that is both complex and emotional in effect.

Jessica Chastain Discusses Astronaut Training & NASA’s JPL For Ridley Scott’s THE MARTIAN

martian

Ridley Scott’s epic EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS opens in theaters in three weeks.

Jessica Chastain currently stars in Christopher Nolan’s INTERSTELLAR where she plays a scientist trying to save humanity from extinction.

One year from now, Scott and Chastain, along with Matt Damon, come together in 20th Century Fox’s upcoming sci-fi film THE MARTIAN.

“Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.

Now, he’s sure he’ll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.”

During her recent visit to The Daily Show, the Oscar-nominated actress shared with host Jon Stewart her role in Scott’s next film. Chastain will play an astronaut in THE MARTIAN, based on the bestselling book by Andy Weir.

In a recent interview, “The Man Who Rediscovered Mars,” EW spoke with the computer programmer turned writer. (HERE)

What does author think about his book being turned into a movie?

For now, Weir has no plans to visit the set — though the idea of seeing his book reimagined with living, breathing people is enticing enough that he could maybe imagine reversing his no-fly policy. “If they invite me to go…I’d have to really think about that,” he says. ”I think I could be a great mission-control guy in the background with no lines.”

This wouldn’t be the first time an Earthling has been stranded on the Red Planet – most noticeably was ROBINSON CRUSOE ON MARS starring Paul Mantee, Victor Lundin, and Adam West. The 1964 movie was adapted from the classic novel Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe by screenwriters John C. Higgins and Ib Melchior.

Hollywood’s fascination with Mars has taken audiences on repeat voyages to the fourth planet from the sun. The long list includes THE ANGRY RED PLANET (1959), TOTAL RECALL (1990), RED PLANET (2000), MISSION TO MARS, (2000) GHOST OF MARS (2001), MARS NEEDS MOMS (2011), and JOHN CARTER (2012). Even the guy in the red suit from the North Pole made the trip in SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS (1964).

Lensed by cinematographer Dariusz Wolski, THE MARTIAN is shooting now at Wadi Rum, Jordan and Budapest, Hungary. The screenplay is by Drew Goddard (WORLD WAR Z, CABIN IN THE WOODS).

The movie stars Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kate Mara, Sean Bean, Michael Peña, Donald Glover and Jeff Daniels.

THE MARTIAN is scheduled to open on November 25, 2015.
