SILENT NIGHT – Review

For years, film buffs have enjoyed arguing about whether DIE HARD is a Christmas movie. The “yeas” emphasize when it’s happening and what’s going on there besides the mayhem between Bruce and the baddies. The “nays” say it’s the polar opposite of the decades of seasonal feelgood spirit exemplified by everything from IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE to what the Hallmark Channel cranks out annually for the holidays. For them, if it ain’t gooey, it ain’t Yuley. Well, whichever camp you’re in, you’ll vote the same way for this gift from A-list action writer, producer and director John Woo, SILENT NIGHT.

SILENT NIGHT serves as a two-edged title. Besides the main events occurring on consecutive Christmases (for which that title ranks among the most popular carols), the entire film plays out without a single spoken word. Whatever they saved on dialog they spent on bullets, squibs, chase vehicles and sound effects. The film opens with Joel Kinnaman’s character, wearing a butt-ugly Christmas sweater, running after a couple of cars full of gang bangers blasting away at each other. Though he’s shot in the throat and chest, he miraculously survives. But one of the wounds rendered him unable to speak without a trachea tube, which he bitterly shuns. About 20 minutes in, we learn why he was so recklessly pursuing them – his young son had just been killed by one of their stray bullets.

Then we get a pretty slow 30 minutes with a lot of brooding and Kinnaman training and prepping for his revenge. He lives for nothing else, eventually driving his wife (Catalina Sandino Moreno) away to handle her grief in her own way. Between the stretches of almost catatonic mourning sprinkled with seething anger, the rigorous conditioning and self-teaching on weaponry, hand-to-hand and a FAST & FURIOUS level of driving are faithful to what we see whenever an Everyman heroically decides to go full Bronson on whoever done him wrong.

Once we get to the second Christmas, Woo gives us all the splatter and superb stunt work that has defined his long and oft-lauded career. On the adrenaline scale, the last 40 minutes comes in well above Charles Bronson’s vigilante outings (Paul Kersey’s multiple DEATH WISH flicks, MR.MAJESTYK, etc.), yet well shy of the JOHN WICK franchise in quantity; a bit closer in intensity. The big final assault puts Kinnaman and the stunt cast through a grueling, bloody ordeal with a few really stellar demises. Fights are gritty and excellently choreographed – like watching a less-athletic Tony Jaa, or many among the recent wave of crime flicks coming from Korea. And unlike many recent slugfests, this one is adequately lit and edited smoothly enough to follow the action and see the consequences. Not intended for the squeamish.

Besides the action that’s really the motivation for buying a ticket, the cast does quite well at conveying their states of mind without uttering a word. Moreno’s expressive face is particularly eloquent while making up for losing an actor’s most obvious tool for establishing a sympathetic character and emotional arc. Kinnaman is sufficiently convincing in his transformation from blue-collar dad to Rambo. After nearly 50 years, Woo is still going strong. Happy holidays!

Cage was last seen in his cameo in THE FLASH movie as Superman battling a Giant Spider. His version of the Last Son of Krypton would have been in Tim Burton’s SUPERMAN LIVES in 1998.

Lakeshore Records Releasing ALTERED CARBON – Original Netflix Series Soundtrack Digitally February 9

Playing now on Netflix is the awesome sci-fi series ALTERED CARBON. It’s really great TV for those who love the genre!

The show features terrific original music by Composer Jeff Russo (STAR TREK: DISCOVERY, FARGO). For those who collect film scores and soundtracks, it’s definitely one to add to your collection.

Lakeshore Records will release ALTERED CARBON – Original Netflix Series Soundtrack digitally February 9, 2018. In addition to the original score, the album includes three songs including a cover of the Johnny Cash standard “Ain’t No Grave” performed by ALTERED CARBON star Renée Elise Goldsberry (Quellcrist Falconer) and Sune Rose Wagner’s performance of White Zombie’s “More Human Than Human”.

When asked about how he crafted the score for this unique futuristic universe, composer Russo said, “We wanted to play the emotional undercurrent of the story so we decided not to be too on the nose as far as the sci-fi aspect. In ALTERED CARBON, human bodies are interchangeable. So in this story, the idea of playing the core of a person becomes very important. I wanted to make sure to create thematic motifs that could be used to keep track of who was who in the ever-changing landscape of the story.”

Based on the classic cyberpunk noir novel by Richard K. Morgan, ALTERED CARBON is an intriguing story of murder, love, sex, and betrayal, set more than 300 years in the future. In Netflix’s ALTERED CARBON, Society has been transformed by new technology: consciousness can be digitized; human bodies are interchangeable; death is no longer permanent. Takeshi Kovacs is the lone surviving soldier in a group of elite interstellar warriors who were defeated in an uprising against the new world order. His mind was imprisoned – on ice – for centuries until Laurens Bancroft, an impossibly wealthy, long-lived man, offers Kovacs the chance to live again. In exchange, Kovacs has to solve a murder … that of Bancroft himself.

“The first scene I scored was when Kovacs is brought back to life,” Russo explained. “It seemed appropriate to first work on the scene in which our main character is reborn into the body he would occupy for the series. That also allowed me to showcase the threading of voices throughout the score that would become its cornerstone sound.”

Russo won the Emmy and received two additional Emmy nominations for his thrilling and angst-producing score on FX’s Emmy and Golden Globe-winning series “Fargo.” Russo most recently completed the score for season one of CBS’s reimagining of the iconic cult-classic series “Star Trek: Discovery.” Russo also scored Starz’s “Counterpart,” starring J.K. Simmons, and “Power,” produced by Curtis Jackson “50 Cent,” as well FX’s hit series, “Legion,” based on Marvel Comic’s “X-Men,” starring Dan Ste-vens and Aubrey Plaza.

Additionally, Russo scored HBO’s Golden Globe and Emmy-nominated series “The Night Of,” starring John Turturro, FX’s John Singleton series, “Snowfall,” Netflix’s original show, “Altered Carbon,” and Annapurna Interactive’s indie video game, “What Remains of Edith Finch.” Russo also composed the music for Jon Avnet’s film “Three Christs,” starring Richard Gere, which premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival, and Craig Macneill’s film, “Lizzie,” starring Chloe Sevigny and Kristen Stewart, which premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.

SUICIDE SQUAD – Review

It’s fun to root for imperfect people that run amok in an imperfect world. Flaws are what makes characters on-screen appear human, and yet, the greater and more abundant the flaws, the more villainous they are usually perceived. You can’t have a strong hero without an equally matched villain. Thankfully, the DC Comics’ universe is populated by the most colorful and deliciously evil around (sorry Marvel).

Amanda Waller is one of those great villains in a film chock full with hitmen, gangsters, and other villains known as “meta-humans.” As a government operative, she wants to protect the public, but does so at a cost. She manipulates evil to defeat even greater threats through a group nicknamed the “Suicide Squad.” She’s the puppet master pulling the strings of these imprisoned villains while offering reduced sentences for their services. It may sound like a sweet deal, but it is very clear that Waller doesn’t care who gets caught in the crossfire to protect the greater good.

On this squad you have Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Deadshot (Will Smith), Killer Croc, Boomerang, Enchantress, Diablo, Slipknot, Katana, and their leader Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman). There’s no need to fret if some of these names don’t ring a bell. Lengthy intros are presented for most of the Squad, though a few are left on the cutting room floor for some reason, despite Deadshot and Harley both getting intros even before the opening credits… and then given another set of intros from Waller at dinner with her cronies not too long after. The real mission is trying to squeeze everyone in along with a Joker (Jared Leto) as the wild card who occasionally shows up. It becomes evident within the first few scenes that this mission of finding balance is doomed for failure.

SUICIDE SQUAD is as sloppily assembled as any major studio film I’ve seen in a while. The first hour is haphazardly edited together and has no structure or sense of rhythm. It becomes a series of music videos where five minutes can’t go by without a pop song blaring – everything from The Rolling Stones to Eminem to The White Stripes is thrown in. It’s like an ADHD child scanning through the radio dial for almost an hour with no regard that the music is actually overtaking some of the dialogue. After an hour of flashbacks and meetings and skipping around between characters in cells, you are finally given the opportunity to see these loose cannons run wild in this twisted playground. Or so you thought. Try as hard as they may, the talented cast is never really let loose to explore their characters or to bounce off each other. The character moments that made the trailers so darkly whimsical are few and far between. They are a team of misfits, but it never feels like an odd-ball team because of a weak script that doesn’t embrace the quirkiness of each of its members.

The mission has the setup of ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, complete with injections into their bodies and a mission to save a secret someone that is trapped in a post-apocalyptic landscape. Sound familiar? Like most of David Ayer’s filmography, the second half becomes a standard issue military film where the mission and macho posturing share center stage. When Rick Flag isn’t barking orders at other military guys who tagged along, he’s at odds with Deadshot while the rest of the squad is relegated to the background. This battle of bravado goes on like a merry-go-round until the next action sequence comes about to show off the fetishized gunplay. In between these darkly lit scenes occupied with (literally) faceless enemy thugs, more humor and character beats could have been injected. All of this eventually builds to a nonsensical final battle where there’s a magical swirling portal that has to be closed. You know the routine: there’s flashing lights, banter from the big baddie, and nothing at stake. At this point, you will be wondering more if there’s a mid-credits stinger than if the gang is going to live to tell the tale.

SUICIDE SQUAD is never as weird as it thinks it is. It should feel exciting or downright a little dangerous to enter into a world where you are forced to root for the bad guys; the type of men and women who would kill or do anything to get ahead in life. Yet, we are given repetitive shoot-outs, a derivative villain, and a lackluster final set-piece that undermines the thrill of seeing these great characters on-screen. In a way, you almost wish that Batman or Superman would show up just to rattle the cage a little (even if I’m still washing out the bad taste from this year’s previous film). It’s important to have two sides to a coin – to pit good vs evil. SUICIDE SQUAD attempts to present a new type of comic book movie: evil vs. more evil. However, this is just a thin facade created by a writer/director who doesn’t truly have a firm grasp of the characters and the property. Whether this is because of producers and studio meddling is yet to be confirmed. Yet, one thing is for certain, this time around, it doesn’t feel good being bad.

Synopsis:

Liam Neeson And Ed Harris Star In New Trailer For RUN ALL NIGHT

Liam Neeson is having a great weekend. His latest film, TAKEN 3, is number one at the US box office this weekend with an estimated $40.4M – worldwide $81.4M.

Now the Oscar nominated actor reteams with NON-STOP director Jaume Collet-Serra in this first trailer to the action thriller RUN ALL NIGHT.

The upcoming movie also stars Joel Kinnaman, Vincent D’Onofrio, Bruce McGill, Genesis Rodriguez, Boyd Holbrook, Holt McCallany, with Common and Oscar nominee Ed Harris.

Collet-Serra directs from a screenplay by Brad Ingelsby (“Out of the Furnace”).
