HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER’s John McNaughton and Michael Rooker to Reunite For New Film Franchise ROAD RAGE

Filmmaker John McNaughton and actor Michael Rooker, the team who created the classic, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, will reteam, after thirty years, on a new film titled Road Rage, the first in a vigilante film series. Tim Perell will produce through his banner, Process Media.

In 1986, McNaughton co-wrote and directed the award winning and critically acclaimed film Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer. Called “truly disturbing” by John Waters, the groundbreaking film was a huge crossover hit with genre fans as well as the art house crowd. The film won best picture awards at both the Sitges and Brussels International Film Festivals and was nominated along with McNaughton and Rooker individually for 6 Independent Spirit Awards in 1991. Time Magazine and Roger Ebert both named it one of the top ten films of the year.

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer also marked the feature film debut for award-winning actor Michael Rooker, whose career has now spanned five decades. He is currently known around the world for his role of “Yondu” in the Guardians of the Galaxy series, “Merle” on The Walking Dead and roles in Suicide Squad and Fast and the Furious 9: The Fast Saga. Rooker is represented by The Gersh Agency and LINK Entertainment.

Road Rage will begin a franchise featuring a new kind of serial killer, one who only kills those who deserve to die. In the tradition of the great avenger films of the 70’s, the film will present a modern hero who is a bad guy gone good, protecting the innocent and punishing the guilty.

Tim Perell stated, “With Road Rage, John McNaughton and Michael Rooker aim once again to create a transgressive and shocking film that will exist at the cutting edge of art and genre. As Henry was ahead of its time, so Road Rage will be ahead of this time; both a disturbing and exhilarating reflection of contemporary American culture.”

John McNaughton added, “I’d wanted to work with Michael Rooker again since, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, but we never got the chance. Finally, I wrote a story that took the genre in a whole new direction. Michael Rooker as Stony; he drives a truck… and kills people. Stony is the ultimate serial killer… with a twist, and he’s going home now after twenty years, to settle a score from the past.”

In addition to the film, Process Media will partner with the award-winning entertainment studio, iNK Stories, to develop a Road Rage video game expanding the brand onto another platform providing an interactive experience in which audiences can participate in the expanded story world.

Navid Khonsari and Vassiliki Khonsari, co-founders of iNK Stories commented, “We are excited to work with John and Tim on developing a genre bending game, with a feminist perspective on the American phenomenon of a serial killer.”

One of Variety’s 10 Producer’s to Watch and the recipient of an Independent Spirit Award for producing, Tim Perell has been making films for four decades and for the past several years has taught film at Johns Hopkins University. Upcoming projects include Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini’s Party of the Century and several titles still under wraps. Previous John Cameron Mitchell’s Cannes sensation Shortbus, Last Chance Harvey starring Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson, Bobcat Goldthwait’s World’s Greatest Dad starring Robin Williams, five films with director Bart Freundlich including Trust the Man starring David Duchovny, Julianne Moore, Billy Crudup and Eva Mendes and Wolves starring Michael Shannon and Carla Gugino.

LOVE AND MONSTERS – Review

By Marc Butterfield

One of the best monster movies has invaded the screens from director Michael Matthews, LOVE AND MONSTERS.

Seven years after the Monsterpocalypse, Joel Dawson (Dylan O’Brien), along with the rest of humanity, has been living underground ever since giant creatures took control of the land. After reconnecting over radio with his high school girlfriend Aimee (Jessica Henwick), who is now 80 miles away at a coastal colony, Joel begins to fall for her again. As Joel realizes that there’s nothing left for him underground, he decides against all logic to venture out to Aimee, despite all the dangerous monsters that stand in his way. The fun-filled and action-packed adventure also stars Michael Rooker and Ariana Greenblatt.

LOVE AND MONSTERS starts out with a bang. Literally. The exposition puts you squarely in the “you are here” of the story, and so minimal time is wasted on trying to figure it all out. Dylan O’Brien is a very “Hiccup” type character, but less useful, and his new survivalist family have great affection for him, but little respect, appropriately so. He bumbles and exposits, with no skill apparently other than making great minestrone soup, and having a lot of heart. But this cannot go on forever. Having spent his last seven years underground with this survivor lot, he begins to feel the need to more than hide and live, and makes it his life’s goal to find his high school sweetheart, Aimee, and, against all odds, finds out that not only is she alive, but he knows WHERE she is  too. And so begins the Hero’s journey type story.

In a way, this movie plays out like a well made video game. Our intrepid hero has a mission, a pack, and a weapon, and the monsters he has to get through to reach his goal increase in difficulty as his journey progresses. This premise may not sound great, but it’s well put together, the actors are all high quality, and the production values and beautiful on-location shooting in Queensland, Australia, along with the lush cinematography by Lachlan Milne, make this seem like an A-list movie, and LOVE AND MONSTERS is enjoyable from front to back.

There are some fantastic surprises too, the monsters are out of the rule book of Ray Harryhausen, and O’Brien always comes across as likeable, and you find yourself rooting for him even when he does stupid stuff.

The fact that his one USEFUL skill is sketching and cataloguing the monsters as he goes along lets you know that his sketchbook will become a valuable commodity in this new and dangerous world. Along the way, he picks up a dog named Boy, a mentor (Michael Rooker, subdued, but played like a master), and a sage (unexpectedly a little girl, played by Ariana Greenblatt, offers simple wisdom), and director Matthews’ (Five Fingers For Marseilles) eventful trip is way more interesting than his destination.

The on-screen chemistry between Greenblatt and O’Brien is sweet and they really seem like a big brother and little sister finding their way through the end-of-the-world circumstances. Looking forward to see what’s next for the very talented Greenblatt.

Somehow though, the relationship he has with Aimee is about the driest part of the movie, despite the two young actors talents. It’s impossible to not root for him each and every leg of this journey, as you can see that no word, picture, or memory, is without use in the future.

The film is also enhanced by the fantastic monster-like score from composers by Marco Beltrami and Marcus Trumpp. Listen HERE.

While it may not beg for a sequel, LOVE AND MONSTERS is well worth the investment in time and harkens back to the fun days of the Saturday matinee that filled the cinemas. Come for the apocalypse and stay for the monsters!

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 CD Score From Composer Tyler Bates Available On April 28

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: Awesome Mix Vol. 2 Track List (PRNewsfoto/Marvel Music/Hollywood Records)

Marvel Music/Hollywood Records have released the digital versions of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: Awesome Mix Vol. 2 songs-only album and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 original score album by composer Tyler Bates (“Guardians of the Galaxy,” “John Wick Chapter 2,” “Watchmen”).

The film opens in U.S. theaters on May 5, 2017.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 is filled with great action, humor and performances, but it is also infused with a new mixed tape and soundtrack, a dynamic that resonated deeply with audiences in the first film as evidenced by the success of the soundtrack album.  The Grammy-nominated “Guardians of the Galaxy” soundtrack reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, becoming the first soundtrack album consisting entirely of previously released songs to top the chart. The album was certified Platinum by the R.I.A.A.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2: Awesome Mix Vol. 2 is a collection of 14 songs and once again, music plays an important role in the telling of the story. In an exclusive interview for Rolling Stone Magazine, director James Gunn provides commentary for each track on the album.

Director James Gunn explains, “We had Awesome Mix Volume 1 last time, and this time we have Awesome Mix Volume 2. It was so important that it’s actually part of the film’s title this time around. As most people know, Quill’s mom made the first tape for a slightly younger boy, and she made the second tape for a slightly older boy. So, in many ways the songs reflect the story.”

Continuing, he adds, “The songs are a little bit deeper in some ways; a little bit less pop in some ways. Some of the choices are a bit more eclectic; some of the http://www.industrialinfo.com/choices are a bit more popular. But we have a real amazing group of songs that, like in the first movie, I wrote into the script. They are a part of the storytelling. Each song is very specific to the scene where it’s placed.”

On the importance of the score in the film, which often gets overlooked in a film heavy with popular songs, James Gunn adds,  “The one thing that is underappreciated is how important Tyler Bates’ score is to the first film,” says the director.  “We still use the score from the first movie while shooting this film and it doesn’t get the respect it deserves because it gets so overshadowed by the soundtrack. There’s some beautiful score on that first soundtrack, and I know that the music we’ve written for the second film is even better than what we did for the first film. Tyler Bates has absolutely outdone himself, and we’re giving something very special to people with the music in this film, both the pop songs and the actual score.”

Gunn and composer Tyler Bates worked on the score during pre-production so that they would have some of the major score themes worked out before the shoot began. This allowed Gunn, the actors and the camera crews to work with the music that will end up being used in the final film.

Read our interview with Bates from 2014 HERE.

An array of artistic influences, from John Coltrane to Chopin, and the rock operas “Hair” and “Jesus Christ Superstar, set the course for Los Angeles-born Bates’ musical signature that often combines disparate components that become indigenous within his compositions for film, television, video games and new media. His ability to create new worlds of atmospheric soundscapes fused with traditional orchestra led to groundbreaking scores for Zack Snyder’s “Dawn of the Dead” and “300” films, and most recently, James Gunn’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” Marvel franchise.

“John Wick 2” and “The Belko Experiment,” both scored by Tyler Bates, exceeded box-office expectations and garnered rave reviews. Bates just completed work on “24 Hours to Live,” starring Ethan Hawke, directed by Brian Smrz. He is currently working on Emilio Estevez’s “The Public,” and James Cox’s “Billionaire Boys Club.” Bates’ next film release is “Atomic Blonde,” starring Charlize Theron, directed by David Leitch.

His current TV projects include the Marvel/Netflix series, “The Punisher,” written and directed by Steve Lightfoot, and Genndy Tartakovsky’s “Samurai Jack,” for Adult Swim.

This July 2017, Bates will embark on a world tour with shock-rocker Marilyn Manson, as lead guitarist, to celebrate the release of Manson’s forthcoming album “SAY 10,” which like Marilyn Manson’s “The Pale Emperor,” was co-written and produced by Bates. The duo created the title song “Cupid Carries a Gun,” for WGN’s “Salem,” which Bates also scored, as well as songs for both John Wick films.

Interview : THE BELKO EXPERIMENT – VR ESCAPE ROOM With David Yarovesky

screenshotfinal1

Have you ever found yourself suddenly enveloped in a nightmare? You must be dreaming, right? Either that, or you’re in an immersive VR escape room, trying to save your own life while a friend fucks with you from the sidelines! That was the fun, panicked predicament I found myself in when I headed to The Microsoft Lounge to play THE BELKO EXPERIMENT – VR ESCAPE ROOM EXPERIENCE created by my talented friend, David Yarovesky.

The game, co-created by Dan Clifton, is an interactive puzzle which puts you in the middle of The Belko Experiment. You have fifteen minutes to solve the clues in order to save your own life. It’s designed for the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift headsets through the Steam Platform, so you have a bit of a choice. Did I mention that it is FREE? As someone who has experience with both headsets, I was glad to experience this world with the Vive! Within seconds of putting the headset on, you’re completely unaware of the outside world, leaving you to focus on the game. I will refrain from the majority of details, since I don’t want to spoil things for you. Instead I will tell you a bit about my experience.

_CAM9630

One of the first things I noticed was a familiar voice when I put the headset on. Comedian Steve Agee is your guide throughout the game. The best way to explain this is if Jiminy Cricket and Milton from Office Space had a baby, and that baby was just dropped in the center of BATTLE ROYALE… Yarovesky created a perfect balance of fun and fear that leads players through the game.

Taking all personal feelings out of this, because I am friends with Yarovesky, and quite a few people involved with the film, I found this to be a ton of fun! You are locked in your office, and have fifteen minutes to search for clues in order for you live. As the clock ticks down, the voice of your co-worker (Agee) is reminding you, with growing intensity, that you’re about to die. There are a ton of different places to search, and you can’t be afraid to think outside the box. As I played, I found my anxiety level increasing slightly, while finding joy in every puzzle solved or clue found. The game is designed to keep you moving. I found myself on the floor, running back and forth, opening drawers, moving boxes, and reaching all over the place in search of clues. Who doesn’t love that?

Because I was playing in the Vive, which is extremely clear, and easy to get lost in, there was one little surprise in particular that scared me half to death! I’m the type of person who can walk into a haunted house by myself, but this… nope. I squealed like a little girl. Despite knowing completely that I was in a video game, that it was not real, and in no way could it hurt me, I panicked! Don’t worry, you can watch me freak out over the “surprise” below.

Warning: I SWEAR A LOT!

After playing the game, I sat down with Yarovesky for a little chit-chat. Check that out here:

One of the first things that I noticed, and it’s something that I noticed when I played ‘Lollipop Chainsaw,’ is that it completely changes your experience when you recognize a voice or two, or know people in it. You heard me as I yelled “Steve! Be nice!” How has your experience been working with friends?

YAROVESKY: It’s great! Working with James [Gunn] is always great. I think James and I like to work together. Working with Steve [Agee] is great. He’s a close friend of mine. It’s nice to have that shorthand, and comfort where you can go “Yo, that wasn’t right. Do it again.” You just know each other so well, so it’s more like hanging out, and it’s less intense. There’s so much in this industry that’s intense and tough, and you have to think hard to navigate choppy waters. When you work with your friends, it’s simple.

I’ve seen a lot of your projects… from music videos, to even writing and directing THE HIVE. We’ve played VR games a million times, but we’ve never actually talked about you going in and creating a game or world. How do you even start something like this?

YAROVESKY : Sure! It’s funny how it happened. Let me break it down…

Break it down for me…

YAROVESKY: I’ll break it down for you, ok? Everyone out there is looking for directors to shoot 360, and you know that I’m a big advocate of VR. I love VR. A lot of these companies don’t understand VR, and all they know is that they want to do “whatever that is.” The simplest way in is 360 video. The problem with that is that 360 is not the future of VR. It’s just not. It’s not interactive enough. So, every time I meet with these companies I tell them “I’m not interested in shooting a 360 video, but I would love to make a game that is fully interactive… a room scale experience that is designed and created by me, that I can kind of control.” I don’t need to go into all of the specifics the ideas, but I wanted to make something totally immersive, and totally interactive. Meeting after meeting, they would go “No thanks. We’re just going to make a 360 video.’ and that’s fine. That’s what they want to do, but Blumhouse Tilt was awesome enough to hear my pitch, and kind of forced me to put my money where my mouth was! I had pitched it a lot, but I hadn’t really ever made a game before, ever. I partnered with Paper Crane Games, I partnered with Top Right Corner, and a ton of people who worked on the film in terms of sound and music… and we cranked out this really cool, unique experience.

This is, with the exception of the surprise because you’re an asshole [laughs]… intense. It’s crazy how much pressure you feel as the clock ticks down, yet Steve adds humor to the game. How did you find the balance between pressure and fun?

YAROVESKY: I think that was just in-game balancing and tweaking. I think that you approach it like a director, in that same way where you look at how much audio people can take, and balance it. How much abuse people can take before they just shut down… I warn people that it’s a fifteen minute panic attack, and when they get in there, they don’t believe me. Then, in the last three minutes they are soaked in sweat and they are freaking out. It’s so funny to see how people completely buckle under the pressure of that ticking clock… to see people stop thinking at all, and start doing things that are completely nonsensical.

If you had to enter THE BELKO EXPERIMENT with all of or friends involved in the film… throw James [Gunn] in there, and Greg [McLean] in there too…

YAROVESKY: Oh, I’d kill them first!

… who would survive, and who wouldn’t?

YAROVESKY: Me. I’d survive. First of all, I’d kill James.

Just like Mafia [the party game]…

YAROVESKY: People listen to James. He’s got a voice that people follow. He’s that alpha dog in the room, so you’ve gotta kill him immediately. You’ve gotta kill Greg…

We should just throw [Michael] Rosenbaum in too.

YAROVESKY: Rosenbaum’s gotta go. Those are all the people who you have to kill first. Anyone who is loud, that can command a group of people… I would kill them first.

What about [Michael] Rooker?

YAROVESKY: Rooker, I would recruit on my side. I’d slash his throat last…

Wouldn’t you be afraid that he’d turn on you first? Let’s face it, he can be unpredictable? [laughs]

YAROVESKY: Rooker’s the real threat! I’d be the most scared of Rooker. [Stephen] Blackehart’s threatening… I don’t know. I’m enjoying this fantasy. I’d like to think that… do I have to keep people? [laughs]

You have to keep one or two people?

YAROVESKY: I’d definitely keep James…

You said you would kill him first!

YAROVESKY: Well, if I got to keep someone. I’d just keep James. James and I, we could run it.

As seen in the trailer, office workers at an American company in Bogota, Colombia are physically and psychologically threatened by an ominous voice over a loud speaker, telling them they must kill one another or risk being killed themselves (this same voice impressively came on last night as the lights abruptly went out and the trailer was shown on a big screen to the enthusiastic crowd in attendance).

Said Rooker, “I read the script and was just blown away at how good it was.” The film shot on location in Bogota for 6 weeks, with Rooker there for 2 weeks shooting his scenes. “It’s a wild place, and we had a great time filming.”

And when I got a moment to talk to writer Gunn, he was happy that I had the chance to see the film and was very interested in what we thought, saying “I am also a movie geek!” and is a regular reader of our site.

I’m really rooting for the success of this film because it really is a brilliant thriller. At the screening I attended, almost a year ago, my back never touched the back of the seat, as I was on the edge of a full blown anxiety attack throughout most of the movie!

THE BELKO EXPERIMENT opens in theaters March 17, 2017.
