NYCC 2011: Brian O’Halloran Interview

On Saturday I had the pleasure of interviewing actor Brian O’Halloran. He is best known for playing the character of Dante in Kevin Smith’s CLERKS & CLERKS 2. He also recently appeared in BRUTAL MASSACRE and the upcoming CALENDAR GIRL. He was at the New York Comic Con this weekend signing autographs and agreed to an impromptu interview. We talked about the convention, theater, horror films and more. He even offered some great advice for indie filmmakers. After he interview, I ended up hanging around the booth another 15 minutes talking with him and some other fans who stopped by. Check out the full interview below!

Discuss: ‘The Happening’ … the greatest B-Movie ever?

Say what you will about the man’s movies, one thing that has been gradually growing out of check since M. Night Shayamalan’s first film is the director’s inflated sense of self. From the way he describes his own work to his gratuitous cameos in his films, Night has been walking on thin ice for awhile. Now comes this newest example of narcissistic hyperbole from an interview with CNN about his latest, “The Happening”:

CNN: So a lot of people are going to see this and say, “Is this an environment movie?” Are you sending an Al Gore-like message out here, or is it just a thriller?

Shyamalan: No. 1, it’s a B movie. This is the best B movie you will ever see, that’s it. That’s what this is. If there’s other things that stick to your ribs as you walk out, that’s great, but it’s supposed to be, you know, zombies eating flesh.

What’s Happening? “The Happening”. Ugh.

And the early award for most ambiguous, least affecting title of 2008 goes to: M. Night Shyamalan and his upcoming film The Happening. Due out this very summer (wow!), it stars Mark Wahlberg as a man trying to keep his family together during a natural crisis affecting life on the planet. That crisis apparently in some part involves turning people into lemmings. Here’s the trailer, go ahead and watch it, I’ll wait for you.

Kind of reminds me of 2002’s Suicide Club (Jisatsu Saakuru), that Japanese horror film that opens with like 50 Japanese school girls holding hands as they all jump in front of a train. But maybe that’s just me. Either way, M. Night Shamalan gets a lot of grief from people, so I’ll cut him a break and say that Mark Wahlberg was a good choice at least. Oh, and that Zooey Deschanel too. Someone told me there was talk a long time ago about casting her as Harley Quinn in the The Dark Knight. That might’ve been a little too perfect for my simple mind to handle.

Anyways, while you wait for M. Night to wow you with another wild twist this summer or simply try to find some way in your mind to get excited about this film, why don’t you go watch The Sixth Sense or Unbreakable again and hope that M. Night manages something close. He’s trying to make you happy people, he’s really trying.
