CHRIS PRATT Talks Hunting At JURASSIC WORLD Press Conference

Jurassic World

Isn’t Chris Pratt just the coolest? Not only does he play a hero in the all new JURASSIC WORLD, he also jumped up to catch a falling speaker at the Los Angeles press conference for the film, protecting a journalist. Check out some of the fun conversation as Pratt tells us about his close call with a moose, and his approach to the character of Owen. Also, make sure you scroll to the end. I’ve included some photos that I took of all the fun decorations and toys they had set up for us to look at!

Steven Spielberg returns to executive produce the long-awaited next installment of his groundbreaking Jurassic Park series, Jurassic World.  Colin Trevorrow directs the epic action-adventure based on characters created by Michael Crichton.  The screenplay is by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver and Derek Connolly & Trevorrow, and the story is by Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver.  Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley join the team as producers.

You’re known as an outdoorsman. You go hunting and fishing. Can you talk a little about your experience dealing with animals in the wild that you may have been able to bring to this character, that has an affinity for these wild animals?

CHRIS PRATT: Yes. It’s funny. This is cool. This is a cool story. It’s one of those stories that is true, and it’s one of those stories that I’ll tell forever, and I’m glad that I can tell it to you guys, because it I wasn’t at a press conference I would just be telling it to my buddies… and this is way better. I was on an elk hunt about eight years ago… nine years ago. This is all leading up to something, I promise. I had shot an elk the first day, so my tag was filled. I was on a hunt with these other two guys, Mike and Ian, and they were out in the morning. They didn’t have me come with them because it was a dry time of year. The aspen leaves had fallen, and it was crunchy on the ground, so two less feet in the woods was better, because it was so loud. So, long story short I was at camp… [Leaves from the forrest setting in the back fall, bringing a speaker down. Pratt jumps up to catch the speaker before it could hit a journalist sitting under it. Journalists all cheer and applaud.]

Just look around you. If there’s anything that looks like it could fall and kill you, just be wary! [Laughs] Find an exit strategy now!

So, I’m walking around camp, because they have these things called grouse. They’re these dumb little birds. They’re like a cross between corn, and an animal that I feel like God put them to be here like, “Ah… even the dummies got to eat, so I’ll give you grouse.” I was out to shoot these grouse with the single shot .22… just a tiny little gun, basically a bb gun. So I’m out looking for grouse, and I look up on the hill… and I see a giant… something. The sun is coming up behind this hill, so all I could really see was a silhouette of a giant beast. I assumed it was a monster bull elk. I go back quickly to the tent and say to Ian and Mike over the radio, “Hey… there’s something here. I think it is a huge elk. Stand by. I’m gonna get a better look, but you might want to come back this way, because one of you guys should shoot this big elk.” So, I come back, and I look up, and I don’t see it. Now I’m looking through my binoculars like this [makes binoculars with his hands], and I don’t see this animal. I can’t find him. Meanwhile, I am wearing slippers, pajamas, and I have my little single shot baby gun .22… and then I hear this fshooooosh… and I drop my binoculars, and standing not ten feet from me is a big, mature bull moose. Moose are incredibly dangerous. They kill more people in North America than bears and wolves all combined. Very, very dangerous animals. They’re huge, 1,000 pounds, this thing is monstrous, and I’m thinking to myself, “Oh. I’m going to die right now!” And so, it’s looking at me, [makes stomping noise] running its foot into the ground, and I just don’t look at it in the eyes, because… I don’t know why, I think maybe I heard “don’t look at it in the eyes” or something. And I take a step back, and as I take a step back, it takes a step towards me, and it’s a standoff between me and this giant beast. I take another step back, and it takes another step towards me. I can still smell this creature, it’s so vivid in my brain. It had steam coming out from its nose, You could see it because it’s so cold. I have this little tiny gun, I’m thinking to myself, “What am I going to do? If this thing attacks me, I’m gonna have to stick this little gun somewhere in its eye or something… somewhere to try to shoot it, because there is no way this guns gonna kill a moose. It’s just gonna make it mad. Finally, I take one more step, and instead of taking one step, it takes three steps right at me. And I think I nearly fainted, and then it just turns off, and walks not two feet from me. It didn’t even care who I was, and it just walked off into the wild.

So, if anything from the wild informed me on this movie – when I am doing that scene with the raptors… I told this story to Colin, and I said, “There’s something really scary about having something standing in front of you, and if you step back a few inches, it comes at you a few inches. Like, that suspense building that up informed me a little bit, by that experience I had in the wild. And, all of these answers are going to be just as long… [laughs] Don’t worry. We have plenty of time to get to all of you. We’ll be done in about four days.

In GUARDIANS you play this ultimate badass [Peter Quill] and now you’re playing another badass [Owen] How did you make sure that Owen is different?

CHRIS PRATT: I do feel that it is a different character. I approached it, and always saw it, as a character who is different from Peter Quill. A huge part of that was just Colin’s vision… our director Colin Trevorrow’s vision. He;d always mentioned to me that he had this term called the third rail. The third rail for him… I didn’t grow up in a city with a subway, but apparently in a subway there are, like, three rails, and if you touch one it’ll kill you. So, that was the third rail for me. He had this third rail, which essentially, if I start being goofy, or acting like a dipshit, or going to my normal comedic bag of tricks, some of which I used in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, certainly the character of Andy Dwyer in ‘Parks and Recreation’ is a full embodiment of that type of clowning around… that comedic shtick that I am known for. If I did any of that on this, that was my third rail. So, if I wanted to have any fun with this, it was going to be in my repertoire with Claire. I relished an opportunity to be able to spar with her… kind of get her goad a little bit. That’s where I could have fun. But for the most part, I was deadly serious, and there was a bit of darkness. This is a guy who’s been through something, and it goes back to who would this guy be, who would he be if this were really a job opening, and they needed a person to fill this position.

We decided, we kind of came together and decided that his backstory is that he probably at one point trained dolphins for the navy, and saw what treatment these animals received, and it was not great for the animals. We decided the likelihood that in all the years that he has been working for the park, that this isn’t his first set of raptors, and that all of the raptors didn’t make it through some of the training. These animals died under his watch. They killed each other under his watch. Certain techniques that we tried didn’t work. So, we’ve come a long way, and a lot of these animals have paid the sacrifice for the work that I am doing for this company. That’s pretty serious. There’s not a lot of room for goofing around when you are playing that guy, a guy who’s been through combat… who’s a combat veteran. There’s kind of a darkness, and he lives on an island. He’s chosen to move away from the world, and live on the dark side of an island. All that stuff was interesting and fun to see a character work, and made me want to be someone who is different. I love Peter Quill and I love Andy, and I look forward to playing Peter Quill again. It’s super fun, but this was just something a little different for me.

Which dinosaur was the biggest asshole? Could you outrun that dinosaur in heels like Bryce Dallas Howard?

CHRIS PRATT: Which dinosaur was the biggest asshole? [Laughs] I guess Indominus Rex was a big asshole. Just mean, just a mean dinosaur. But like most assholes, he had a tough upbringing. Kinda feel a little bit bad for him.

But could you out run it like Bryce?

CHRIS PRATT: Likely no. But I did run in heels for the first time while on the James Cordon show, and A.) I kinda liked the way it felt walking in them, and B.) I surprised myself in running in them, kinda like tippy toe running. But I would not be able to outrun the Indominus Rex. But with enough practice, I might get a good forty or fifty feet before I was killed.

Did you know that you would have three franchises to your name?

CHRIS PRATT: Always knew it. [Laughs] I was like, “As soon as I have three franchises to my name…” No, I never would have known. I could not have known. No way. It’s a pretty fine space to be in. So, I am feeling very blessed and overcome with joy.

TOP TEN TUESDAY: Top Ten Jeffs In Movies

In honor of JEFF, WHO LIVES AT HOME, the gang at WAMG put together a different kind of Top Ten Ten Tuesday. This Friday, Paramount Vantage and Indian Paintbrush are bringing to the screen Jay Duplass’ and Mark Duplass’ story of Jeff (Jason Segel). On his way to the store to buy wood glue, Jeff looks for signs from the universe to determine his path. However, a series of comedic and unexpected events leads him to cross paths with his family in the strangest of locations and circumstances. Jeff just may find the meaning of his life… and if he’s lucky, pick up the wood glue as well.

So who’s game for a Top Ten Jeffs in Movies? We came up with a list of our favorite “Jeffs” and boy are they a busy lot. As you can see below, these guys have run the gamut between film, TV and the stage. Have a look at our list and tell us who you would’ve included.

10. Jeffrey Hunter

From Jesus Christ in KING OF KINGS to Christopher Pike, 1st Captain of the U.S.S. Enterprise on Star Trek, actor Jeffrey Pike made his mark as an actor in both TV and film. Most will remember Hunter’s star making performance in John Ford’s classic American Western THE SEARCHERS as John Wayne’s adoptive nephew. Although he died at the young age of 42, Hunter roles covered the cinematic landscape with such noticeable films THE LONGEST DAY (1962), A KISS BEFORE DYING (1956) and THE FROGMEN (1951).

09. Jeff Speakman

Jeff Speakman was supposed to the next Jean Claude Van Damme. A very accomplished martial artist, Speakman is founder and director of American Kenpo Karate Systems (AAKS), an international kenpo karate organization with more than 50 schools. In 1991 he was cast in the lead of his first showcase film THE PERFECT WEAPON, an adequately mediocre actioner that failed to distinguish itself from the gazillion direct-to-video martial arts films that were flooding the market at that time. He appeared in a few more films but his big moment as the next big thing never materialized and he went back to his (very successful) day job.

08. Jeff Fahey

A dependable character actor, Jeff Fahey scored the plum role of the Humphrey Bogart surrogate in Clint Eastwood’s WHITE HUNTER BLACK HEART in 1991 and the title role in the Stephen King adaption LAWNMOWER MAN a year later. Stardom eluded the rugged blue-eyed actor but he kept busy over the next two decades starring in a slew of direct-to-video horror and action films before becoming a TV regular with gigs on CSI and LOST. Robert Rodriguez cast Fahey in his films PLANET TERROR (2007) and MACHETE (2010) and he has a half dozen films in the can for future release.

07. Jeffrey Jones

“There are simply too many notes, that’s all. Just cut a few and it will be perfect,” Jeffrey Jones memorably intoned in his velvety voice as Emperor Joseph II in AMADEUS (1984). Jones followed up this Golden Globe-nominated turn with several more notable roles. He was Principal Ed Rooney in FERRIS BEULLER’S DAY OFF (1986), Mr. Deetz in Tim Burton’s BEETLEJUICE (1988) and was perfectly cast as Criswell in Burton’s ED WOOD (1994 – “We are all interested in the future, for that is where you and I are going to spend the rest of our lives”). Often cast as a buffoon or foil, the 6′ 4½”actor had a great career going for him until 2004 when he was arrested on child pornography charges and -well – he was great in FERRIS BUELLER!

06. Jeffrey Wright

Primarily a stage actor, Jeffrey Wright has appeared on the big screen in such big films as SOURCE CODE, CASINO ROYALE, THE IDES OF MARCH, THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE and W. He also had a pivotal role in M. Night Shyamalan’s THE LADY ON THE WATER as Mr. Dury,  a word game enthusiast who is the symbolist of the fantasy story. Wright won a Tony Award for his role in Angels in America, and gave an astonishing portrayal of artist Jean-Michel Basquiat in the 1996 film BASQUIAT.

05. Jeffrey Tambor

Mr. Tambor may be best known for his stellar television work starting with ” The Ropers ” (a low-rated spin-off of ” Three’s Company”) to ” Hill Street Blues ” to ” The Larry Sanders Show ” (as the ultimate thick-headed sidekick Hank Kingsley) and the sublime ” Arrested Development ” (very soon headed to the big screen), but he’s been making an impression on film goers as a superb supporting player going all the way back to 1979 as Al Pacino’s unstable law partner in “…And Justice for All “. Since then he’s been bouncing back and forth between big comedy blockbusters ( THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY, CITY SLICKERS, and the two HANGOVER flicks ) and family friendly fare (HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS, MR. POPPER’S PENGUINS, various Muppet movies, and voices in MONSTERS VS. ALIENS and THE SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS MOVIE). Many times he’s a goofy father or somewhat shady business guy (as in the recent indie WIN WIN), so his role as as Tom Manning in the two HELLBOY films was a pleasant surprise. His uptight, clueless beaucrat become a great addition to the demon fighting team by the end of the first movie mission. Film fans have come to look forward to his great scene-stealing performances when they spot his name in conjuction with projects for the small and big screen.

04. Jeffrey Dean Morgan

Morgan has quickly become one of Hollywood’s most charming actors as well as one of the most sought after. Truly this generations ladies man. From WATCHMEN to THE LOSERS to ALL GOOD THINGS, Jeffrey Dean Morgan comes across on screen as a man’s man. Like Jeffrey Hunter, Morgan is another actor who can easily slip between roles in movies and TV. In the last decade he’s been on such hit shows as “Weeds”, “Supernatural”, and “Grey’s Anatomy”. WAMG looks forward to his upcoming roles in the RED DAWN remake, STARZ’s “Magic City”, and anything else that may come down the road for the fast approaching leading actor.

03. Jeff Daniels

For a fella’ that looks like your typical suburban dad next door, Jeff Daniels has had an interesting film resume’. He first used his affable boyish charm as that cheatin’ hubby Flap in James Brooks’s TERMS OF ENDEARMENT. After that smash it seemed that he was looking to team up with gifted directors rather than grab the ” rom-com ” brass ring. In Woody Allen’s THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO he was the matinee idol that literally walked off the screen to romance Mia Farrow. Then he was an uptight every-man literally handcuffed to wildchild Melanie Griffith in Jonathan Demme’s SOMETHING WILD. A complete turn around from that was perhaps his biggest hit as equally dimwitted brother Harry keeping comic pace with the white-hot Jim Carrey in the Farelly Brother’s DUMB & DUMBER. Jeff’s done his share of ” safe” multiplex fare (101 DALMATIONS, ARACHNOPHOBIA), but in recent years he’s made a mark for himself in supporting roles from PLEASANTVILLE, THE SQUID AND THE WHALE, to the quirky recent thriller THE LOOKOUT. Let’s hope that Jeff will continue to surprise us with his big screen choices.

02. Jeff Goldblum

“But, John. If the Pirates of the Caribbean breaks down, the pirates don’t eat the tourists.” Jeff Goldblum is perhaps most widely known as Dr. Ian Malcolm from JURASSIC PARK, followed closely as Dr. Brundle from THE FLY. Interesting, both are doctors. Goldblum is an actor not unlike Christopher Walken, an actor we love and that always shows up in every character he performs, but adds such a unique style and personality of his own that we’re perfectly willing to accept this recurring familiarity. Beloved for his trademark style of delivering dialogue with a cool, intellectual stagger, Goldblum never fails to get his point across and always succeeds at making the audience read his facial gestures and body language as readily as we listen to his words.

01. Jeff Bridges

From “The Dude” to Rooster Cogburn, Jeff Bridges puts his all into every character he plays. Bridges made the slacker cool, not just a do nothing bum, reinvented the role John Wayne made famous, but many of his greatest roles are from so many of the lesser known films in which he so graciously partakes, such as a man experiencing an existential epiphany after surviving a plane crash, or when he plays an alien disguised as a human on Earth, struggling to get back home in STARMAN. More than just as actor, Bridges is an artist, a photographer, a musician and has now become a household name and an American icon.

So how did we do? Let us know in the comments section. JEFF, WHO LIVES AT HOME will be in theaters this Friday, March 16.

WAMG At The JURASSIC PARK ULTIMATE TRILOGY (BD) Special Effects Press Day

In celebration of the the JURASSIC PARK ULTIMATE TRILOGY being released on Blu-Ray and DVD, WAMG was invited to a special effects press day. Melissa (that would be me) from WAMG sat down with Ariana Richards, who plays Lex Murphy in JURASSIC PARK and THE LOST WORLD : JURASSIC PARK, and three of the top special effects professionals in the world, Dennis Muren,  Phil Tippett, and John Rosengrant to talk about their experiences working on the film. Muren, Tippett, and Rosengrant worked on the special effects of the films, create things such as the giant tyrannosaurus rex! Pretty neat, huh?

From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Steven Spielberg, the Jurassic Park Ultimate Trilogy is one of the most successful film franchises in worldwide box-office history. On a remote tropical island, an amazing living theme park becomes a game of survival for humans foolhardy enough to set foot on it. Meticulously recreated dinosaurs spring to astonishing life as the film’s breathtaking special effects and thrilling action sequences keep audiences on the edge of their seats. Each chapter of the history-making saga delivers even more action and spectacular visual effects than its predecessor, as nature’s ultimate killing machines once again rule the earth. Almost 20 years after its inception, the Jurassic Park Trilogy remains an unmatched cinematic experience.

First, here is my interview with Ariana Richards, who plays Lex Murphy. Enjoy!

Ariana is now a successful artist. Check out some of her paintings, and other works at http://www.galleryariana.com/

Next, I got the chance to sit down with Dennis Muren of Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), Phil Tippett of Tippett Sudios, and John Rosengrant of Legacy Effects (Formerly Stan Winsten Studios). Check it out:

SYNOPSIS:

JURASSIC PARK

A multimillionaire (Richard Attenborough) unveils a new theme park where visitors can observe dinosaurs cloned using advanced DNA technology. But when an employee tampers with the security system, the dinosaurs escape, forcing the visitors to fight for their survival. Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum and Laura Dern star in this thrilling, action-packed blockbuster from acclaimed director Steven Spielberg and based on the novel by Michael Crichton.

THE LOST WORLD : JURASSIC PARK

Four years after Jurassic Park’s genetically bred dinosaurs ran amok, multimillionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) shocks chaos theorist Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) by revealing that Hammond has been breeding more beasties at a secret location. Malcolm, his paleontologist ladylove (Julianne Moore) and a wildlife videographer (Vince Vaughn) join an expedition to document the lethal lizards’ natural behavior in this action-packed thriller.

JURASSIC PARK III

In need of funds for research, Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) accepts a large sum of money to accompany Paul and Amanda Kirby (William H. Macy and Tea Leoni) on an aerial tour of the infamous Isla Sorna. It isn’t long before all hell breaks loose and the stranded wayfarers must fight for survival as a host of new — and even more deadly — dinosaurs try to make snacks of them. Laura Dern, Michael Jeter, Alessandro Nivola and Trevor Morgan co-star.
