Two-time Academy Award nominee and two-time Golden Globe winner John Travolta (PULP FICTION, GET SHORTY) and Academy Award nominee Salma Hayek Pinault (SAVAGES, upcoming THE PROPHET) will star in the drama A THREE DOG LIFE, based on thebest-selling memoir by Abigail Thomas, it was announced today by producers J. Todd Harris (THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT) and Clark Peterson (MONSTER).

The film is written and will be directed by Nick Guthe (MINI’S FIRST TIME), who also produces.

In order to be close to her husband, Abigail reinvents her life and moves from New York City to the small country town, with her new family of three dogs.

“Nick’s adaptation of Abigail’s emotional memoir is incredibly moving. It’s rare to find such dramatic and honest material,” said Harris.

“With Nick directing this cast, the ingredients are in place for a poignant and engrossing movie,” added Peterson.

“Nick has adapted Thomas’ heart-wrenching memoir flawlessly, capturing the intimate details of how her marriage is put to the test following a life-changing accident. John and Salma are the perfect pair to portray this couple’s journey over the course of several years,” said The Solution’s co-founders and partners, Lisa Wilson and Myles Nestel.

A Three Dog Life, published in 2006 by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, was named one of The Los Angeles Times Favorite Nonfiction Books of the Year and A Washington Post Book World Best Book of the Year. PULP FICTION – The Blu Review

pulp /p lp/ n.
1. A soft, moist, shapeless mass of matter.
2. A magazine or book containing lurid subject matter and being characteristically printed on rough, unfinished paper.

Called “one of the most wanted Blu-ray titles of all time” (IGN) and ranked as such on numerous critics’ lists, Pulp Fiction is “nothing less than a cultural phenomenon” (Moviemaker Magazine). The film was honored with an Academy Award® for Best Original Screenplay (1994) and earned seven total nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for Quentin Tarantino.

A pair of low-rent hit men, Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson), are sent out to collect a stolen briefcase for their mob boss employer, Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames).  Having proven himself worthy, Wallace then entrusts Vincent to entertain his wife, Mia (Uma Thurman), while he is out of town.  Meanwhile, Wallace has paid off aging boxer Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis) to throw his next fight.  The lives of these wildly entertaining characters intertwine with unexpected and violent consequences.

I don’t really think I need to tell you how outstanding this film is. I mean, if you don’t know the beauty that is PULP FICTION… we can’t be friends! So, let’s just jump into the meat and potatoes of the Blu-Ray.

VIDEO:

Holy moly! They did this 1080p transfer  to 2.35:1 film right! This film looks flawless from start to finish! When the film was released on DVD in 2002 there were some issues, but no more. This film is stunning on blu-ray… A real treat for the eyes!

Video codec: MPEG-4 AVC
Video resolution: 1080p
Aspect ratio: 2.35:1
Original aspect ratio: 2.39:1

AUDIO:

Mind blowing! This audio will take you on journey! Crisp, clear, directional… everything from the channel separation to the LFE are impressive. Add the already stellar soundtrack and your eardrums are about to have an eargasm!

English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1

2 New Features:

  • “NOT THE USUAL MINDLESS BORING GETTING TO KNOW YOU CHIT CHAT” Interviews With The Cast (43 min): Newly recorded interviews with John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Tim Roth, Amanda Plummer, Patricia Arquette and Eric Stoltz. These interviews were really fun to watch. You can really tell that the cast appreciates being apart of such a historic film. The interviews are fun and energetic!
  • “HERE ARE SOME FACTS ON THE FICTION” Critics’ Retrospective on the Movie’s Place in Film History (20 min): Roundtables with film critics Elivis Mitchell, Scott Foundas, Stephanie Zacharek, Tim Lucas, and Andy Klein. I really enjoyed the honesty in this piece. Rather than blowing smoke up the viewers… well, you know… these five critics have a frank discussion on the films strengths and weaknesses.

Features Previously Released:

  • 2 Behind-The-Scenes Montages “JACK RABBIT SLIMS” and “BUTCH HITS MARSELLUS”
  • “PULP FICTION: THE FACTS” Featurette: Although the video quality is terrible, this featurette is worth watching. It contains some interesting stuff, so be patient.
  • Production Design Featurette: features Production Designer David Wasco and Set Decorator Sandy Reynolds-Wasco.
  • Siskel & Ebert “AT THE MOVIES” – “THE TARANTINO GENERATION” : If you are a Tarantino fan, you will enjoy this episode.
  • Independent Spirit Awards Footage: Tarantino being interviewed by a young Michael Moore.
  • Cannes Film Festival Footage: The Palme D’Or Acceptance Speech… I’m a fan of Tarantino’s response to the angry woman in the balcony. I don’t know what she is so angry about, but her outburst has been captured on video and re-released for her own embarrassment.
  • “THE CHARLIE ROSE SHOW” Tarantino Interview
  • Still Galleries, Trailer and TV Spots
  • Trivia Track
  • 5 Deleted Scenes With Intro’s by Quentin Tarantino: Quick and to the point, Tarantino gives a brief intro to each of the five deleted scenes. I mean, who doesn’t want to hear why these scenes were cut from the man himself?

The one thing missing is an audio commentary, which would have been nice. I can understand why they wouldn’t include it though. Adding commentary now, after all that has been said about this film, would be sort of pointless. Still, it would be an interesting addition for fans. PULP FICTION on Blu-Ray gives viewers a bountiful selection of extras and features. This film has stood the test of time. It’s wit, narrative crime story, and beautiful cinematography are just as relevant and appealing today as it was in 1994, when the film was first released. This is a great addition to any Blu-Ray library!

OVERALL RATING: 4.75 out of 5 stars

Another Trailer and Stills FROM PARIS WITH LOVE

At some point, the cinema Gods looked at January 5th, 2010 and proclaimed that it would be known as Pierre Morel Day.   Not only has word come down today that the director is taking over directing duties on the forthcoming DUNE project, but his next film, FROM PARIS WITH LOVE, has a brand spanking new trailer and a few new still, as well.

The trailer can be viewed over at Apple in HD.   It offers a lot of the same explosive action and subtle(?) vulgarity from John Travolta.   In a nutshell, it looks like all kinds of fun.   I’m still not entirely sold on Jonathan Rhys Meyers playing the goofy but straight lead, trying to keep up with Travolta blowing up half of France.   Nonetheless, this looks like one more, cool actioner for Morel to hang under his belt.

Also released today are these two stills from the film.   They come courtesy of the movie’s Facebook Page.

Check them out right here:

FROM PARIS WITH LOVE hits theaters on February 5th.

Review: OLD DOGS

old dogs

A turkey.  Over stuffed.  More sour than cranberry sauce.  As flat as a thin layer of mashed potatoes.  More painful than the post-turkey dinner walk to the couch.  Take your pick of these Thanksgiving euphemisms that, each one of them, describes the new comedy OLD DOGS, a film so void of successful humor, it could be eligible for Best Drama at next year’s Golden Globe awards if it were any good.  It’s not.  In fact, it’s downright  infuriating  to watch so much effort put into something so delusional of itself.

You can thank director Walt Becker, who didn’t do enough damage to John Travolta’s career when he put him in a biker gang with Tim Allen, William H. Macy, and Martin Lawrence, for much of OLD DOGS’ failures.  Becker’s come a ways since his days of dishing out R-rated fare like VAN WILDER and the straight-to-video BUYING THE COW.  Though his taste levels have gone the way of Disney, his talent as a director seems to be plummeting down a long cliff.  With OLD DOGS, he hits rock bottom, taking the script that wasn’t any good to begin with by THE FAMILY MAN scribes David Diamond and David Weissman and attempting to breath some kind of life into it.

The  aforementioned  Travolta plays Charlie and Robin Williams plays Dan, two bachelors who are trying to get their sports marketing company its biggest deal yet.  As with any, good, flavorless, family comedy, kids come in and muck up the whole works, as Dan realizes a short fling he had seven years before resulted in twins.  Now, with the mother facing a short stint behind bars (don’t even worry about an explanation there) and the only, other option to watch the kids in the hospital with a neck brace (again, don’t ask for an explanation), Dan volunteers his time and efforts to watching them.  Hilarity should ensue, but, sadly, it never seems to.

There are moments in OLD DOGS, very noticeable moments, where certain characters are appearing to crack a joke, make a funny, whatever most comedies of this nature try to do.  The other actors in the scene walk all over the line or interrupt the first person.  It’s strange.  It’s distracting.  It does everything to its audience this type of film shouldn’t do.  Whole segments of film seem to be moving the narrative towards some sort of heart.  At one point, Dan, fed up with the way the kids are fouling up his adult-time at every turn, goes off to Charlie about how he never wanted to be a father.  He turns to see the face of a seven-year-old boy hurt by his father’s words.  It is such a painfully obvious scene that Becker and crew do with it the only thing they know to.  They completely drop it in favor of one more sight gag or act of futile physical comedy.

What we are left with, then, is a film full of stutter steps, but, unfortunately, one that believes itself to be a long jumper.  It moves from one scene to another putting the adults in obvious peril while the kids sit in the background either watching on blankly or causing the next kind of havoc.  Seriously, I cannot tell whether the kids in these roles, Conner Rayburn and Ella Bleu Travolta, are any good or not.  The fact that there are children in this film is a moot point entirely, a MacGuffin whose only purpose is to move the film towards its next whirlwind of humorless chest-beating.

Travolta and Williams seem to love beating their chest, as well.  They act as if louder and more erratic equals funny never mind what’s going on with their characters.  You would never guess watching them throw themselves about or hide behind strange, makeup enhancing face twitches that these were once credible actors, one of whom one an Academy Award a little over a decade ago.

Seth Green seems to be completely lost.  You can almost see the gears churning in his head about the next ROBOT CHICKEN episode while he’s trying not to look bored with getting hit below the belt or tossed around a gorilla cage.  Let’s just forget Bernie Mac even appears here and say his last film was SOUL MEN.  Can that level of revisionist history occur, please?  Matt Dillon and Justin Long appear to be the only ones in the film who seem to know what they are doing.  Long actually elicits more than the mildest of chuckles in his five minutes of screen time.  Maybe that was just a good couple of days of shooting.  Their scenes are, in fact, together.

There just doesn’t seem to be any place for a film like OLD DOGS, a movie that brings neither humor nor heart to an already stale premise.  Honestly, a bad movie is one thing, but what is found here is something else entirely.  I rarely allow myself to hate a film.  There are certainly films I do not like, but hate is such a strong emotion to have for a motion picture that its usage is reserved only now and again for films that, I feel, do more harm than good.  A film like OLD DOGS will have its backers.  No film is ever either lauded or admonished completely.  To those that would laud a film like OLD DOGS, I can only say, “I don’t understand you, nor do I have any desire to do so.”  To those who would rebuke a film this blank, this lame, and this unabashedly useless, I can only say, “Yeah.  That’s pretty obvious.  Now let’s have some turkey.”
