Oliver Stone’s Oscar®-winning “Wall Street,” which defined an era of excess and predicted an ongoing obsession with wealth and power, will return to movie theaters across the country for two days only this fall – almost 30 years from the “Black Monday” global stock market collapse.
This special cinema event will be accompanied by a newly created featurette titled “Greed is Good” about the making and continued influence of “Wall Street,” which earned Michael Douglas the Oscar as Best Actor for his indelible portrayal of Wall Street corporate raider Gordon Gekko.
Fathom Events and Twentieth Century Fox will present “Wall Street” in nearly 650 movie theaters across the U.S. on Sunday, September 24, and Wednesday, September 27, at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. (local time) each day.

Gekko’s infamous pronouncement that “Greed, for lack of a better term, is good” became one of the most quoted moments in movie history, crystallizing much of the cultural sentiment of the 1980s, and turned Gekko into a fascinating and unique movie character – both villain and hero.
“Wall Street” originally debuted in cinemas on December 11, 1987, less than two months after “Black Monday,” when global markets plunged and the U.S. stock market lost more than 22 percent of its value on a single day. Director Oliver Stone had shot “Wall Street” earlier that spring and summer, and the timing of the film’s original release gripped the public’s interest.
Also starring Charlie Sheen as young stockbroker Bud Fox, Martin Sheen as his blue-collar father Carl, Darryl Hannah as Bud’s girlfriend Darien, and Hal Holbrook as ethical Lou Mannheim, “Wall Street” has continued to simultaneously inspire newcomers to the financial industry and serve as a cautionary tale of unchecked greed.

Depending on your point-of-view, Edward Snowden is a hero or a traitor. When whistle-blower Snowden leaked documents to the public, through the Guardian newspaper, that exposed the United States government’s massive surveillance and data collection on own citizens, the news exploded around the world, sparked outrage among the American people (either that their government was spying on them or that Snowden revealed it), and sent Snowden on the run and into hiding.
Hero or villain, few would deny that what Edward Snowden did is a worthy subject for a serious film. It even sounds like the subject might be a good fit for director Oliver Stone, a filmmaker famous for his affinity for conspiracy theories and for his libertarian-to-liberal views. But anyone expecting a very liberal slant to this film will be surprised, as Stone takes an even-handed approach, offering some of the arguments on both sides. The problem with Stone’s SNOWDEN is not bias but that there are not enough of those discussions and they lack the needed depth. This is an important subject,one that strikes at the heart of what it means to be a free country, one that deserves a big discussion in a big serious drama. Stone’s SNOWDEN is not a bad film as much as a disappointing one.
It does offer a little insight into who Edward Snowden is and why is made this fateful choice. Stone starts his film with Snowden (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) meeting with journalists Laura Poitras (Melissa Leo), Glenn Greenwald (Zachary Quinto) and Ewen MacAskill (Tom Wilkinson) as he discusses on camera what is in the documents he is giving them. The film then shifts back and forth between that event and the earlier points in Snowden’s life that led to his decision. Snowden was inspired by 9/11 to join the Army but his military career was cut short in training by a shattered leg. The serious, patriotic young man next applies to the CIA. The interviewer tells him his lack of a high school diploma ordinary would scratch him from consideration but these are not ordinary times post-9/11 and Snowden is a brilliant computer programmer with the remarkable skills needed for the modern battlefield in cyberspace. Training for the CIA further reveals Snowden computer gifts and brings him under the wing of Corbin O’Brian (Rhys Ifans). At the same time, the politically-conservative Snowden meets and later falls for liberal, creative Lindsay Mills (Shailene Woodley).
Snowden had previously been the subject of an excellent documentary CITIZENFOUR by Laura Poitras, one of the journalists Snowden contacted and who is played by Melissa Leo in Stone’s film. For some, that excellent documentary may seem enough. Still there is a segment of the film-going public who never see documentaries and the subject is big enough to warrant a dramatic narrative film speak to that other audience. It would not be the first time a subject or person has been covered in both. There were several documentaries about the sub-prime mortgage crisis and Wall Street crash that sparked the Great Recession before THE BIG SHORT told it so well in narrative form.
Stone’s film unfolds much like a political thriller, building tension as Snowden uncovers the kind of work the CIA and NSA are doing and his growing both ethical unease and personal paranoia. Restless after being assigned to desk work at a post in Switzerland, Snowden works his way into a field assignment, which puts him in contact with an NSA program secretly collecting unprecedented amounts of information on, well, everyone. NSA tech employee Gabriel (Ben Schnetzer) casually describes how the system works, and how it is all approved by the FISA court, which he calls a rubber stamp. The discovery of what seems to be an unconstitutional surveillance program leaves Snowden uneasy, and the way the field agent uses that information even more so. By the time Snowden is posted to Hawaii, now as a private contractor for the NSA, the forces the drive his decision are well underway.
The film is at its strongest when it shows us how this system of surveillance grew, slowly and organically, more like the frog in the beaker where the temperature is slowly rising than by a group of people abruptly just deciding to violate the law. Much of the film is presented in a straight-forward manner, lacking the kind of cinematic flare of some of the director’s earlier films. Near the film’s end, the real Snowden appears, in a return to more of that signature style.
The disappointing part of Stone’s film is that while is does have some examination of the right or wrong of Snowden’s actions, bit on his inner motivations and how a basically conservative guy who join the CIA reached this decision, it does not have enough of that. Which way one sees it might depend on whether one sees the War on Terror as the same as WWII or the Civil War (when such Constitutionally questionable things happened) or whether it was more like the Cold War or the Vietnam War, a proxy war in the former. One thing those who remember the Cold War will likely found chilling about Snowden’s revelations was the oft-made statement that the difference between free countries like the U.S. and communist ones like the Soviet Union (Russia) was that our government didn’t spy on its people. Edward Snowden proved that point of pride was no longer the truth.
The film spends a quite a bit of time on Snowden’s romantic life, perhaps trying to build drama but also humanizing the central figure. Once the patriotic if naive Snowden, who is nicknamed “Snow White” by a more jaded fellow programmer, realizes what his government is actually doing, a level of paranoia sets in. Well, not paranoia, because they really are watching him and listening to his conversations, just as they are everyone else. The film sometimes suffers from an uneven pace, with parts of the story that could have been dealt with briskly sometimes dragged out, although other critical moments are handled with nicely-built tension.
SNOWDEN does boast a strong cast, and a few noteworthy performances. Joseph Gordon-Levitt does not much resemble Edward Snowden but he does a nice job portraying him, capturing mannerisms and some of the evolution in his thinking on his work. Nicholas Cage is surprisingly effective in a restrained performance as a CIA engineer now relegated to teaching, in a small but memorable part. Ifans is brilliantly as O’Brien, a smooth character shifting between warmth as someone who is fond of Snowden, and creepy as someone enamored of his protege’s remarkable skills but ethically blind to what kind of work they are doing. Disappointingly, Shailene Woodley is given too little to do as Snowden’s girlfriend.
SNOWDEN is a missed opportunity, a subject that might have been better in the hands of a different director, regardless of Stone’s considerable talent. The lack of focus on discussion around Snowden’s actions and their implications, right or wrong, or of people’s right to know in a democratic country, gets too little attention. The biggest problem the film faces is assumptions. It is likely audiences will decide to see Stone’s film or not based on how they feel about Edward Snowden himself, and less on the merits of Stone’s film itself. Those who see Snowden as a traitor may assume Stone will present a simple admiring view of him. Those who believe Snowden is a whistle-blowing hero may be disappointed the film does not have the in-depth discussion of CITIZENFOUR or more detail on the technology itself.

The feature film SNOWDEN is currently in post-production and will be released in the US on Christmas day. Joseph Gordon-Levitt will play Edward Snowden in the film directed by Oliver Stone, so don’t expect subtlety. If you want to find out more about Snowden, be sure to check out the Oscar-winning documentary CITIZENFOUR, which will be released on Blu-ray August 25th.
Few documentaries have cameras rolling as history is being made. But director Laura Poitras found herself in the middle of momentous times while making CITIZENFOUR, which took us behind the scenes as NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden worked with (among others) journalist Glenn Greenwald to expose the organization’s systematic surveillance of everyday Americans. From the worried initial meetings in a Hong Kong hotel room to the later fallout across the globe, CITIZENFOUR had the vibe of a good thriller. We could feel the tension building when we hear the news coverage on the TV the day after the story of Snowden’s expose is published and Poitras did a great job in completing the movie using strong footage from all around the globe. We hear Snowden explain how he was offended by the NSA’s spying system. (The word “spying” is used as often as the more neutral “surveillance.”) and, with ominous music in the background, we watch government representatives apparently lie to congress. They’re clearly defined as the enemy, like Big Tobacco was. The names of Obama and Pelosi are brought up in a context suggesting hypocrisy. It’s a government program that covers all Americans, not just suspects. CITIZENFOUR and Snowden’s actions will all feed into the national paranoia (especially after Oliver Stone’s film comes out) and some will swallow the documentary as the whole truth but some may wonder if the protection from NSA surveillance that may follow Snowden’s actions is more than the damage he has done to national security.
CITIZENFOUR will be released on Blu-ray and DVD August 25th from Starz/Anchor Bay and We Are Movie Geeks has had a sneak peak.
CITIZENFOUR is presented on Blu-ray with an AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 1.78:1. The many interview and talking head segments are by and large shot without much in the way of lighting or other equipment, and offer an accurate if not especially well detailed view of the participants’ faces. The many TV clips look exactly as you would expect though I doubt many will purchase CITIZENFOUR as a way of testing their home entertainment systems.
CITIZENFOUR has a lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix that provides an adequate soundscape for the spoken word and occasional sound effect and low-key music cue. Fidelity is fine and there are no issues of any kind to report.

On Tuesday (March 3) CNN reported Edward Snowden’s lawyer said he is ready to come home to the United States.
The former National Security Agency contractor’s Russian lawyer said he’s ready to leave the country that offered him political asylum in 2013 and return to the United States as long as he gets a fair trial.
“He is thinking about it. He has a desire to return and we are doing everything we can to make it happen,” said Anatoly Kucherena, Snowden’s lawyer, Agence-France Presse reported Tuesday.
Snowden has remained in Russia since he leaked thousands of classified documents to media outlets that he obtained while working for the consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton.
Kucherena said Snowden has so far received a guarantee from Attorney General Eric Holder that he will not face the death penalty — but that Snowden also wants a guarantee of a “legal and impartial trial.”
Such a trial, Snowden’s legal advisers have said, would mean he wouldn’t face charges under the Espionage Act, a World War I-era law that was used to charge Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg.
Snowden’s lawyer said he’s allowed to travel outside Russia now under a three-year Russian residency permit, but that he believes Snowden would be taken immediately to a U.S. embassy as soon as he leaves the country.
The highlight of the 22nd Annual Whitaker St. Louis International Film Festival (SLIFF), held Nov. 14- 24, (aside from the Ray Harryhausen Tribute November 15th) is an appearance by famed writer/director Oliver Stone. A three-time Academy Award® winner, Stone has written and directed more than 20 feature films, among them some of the most influential and iconic films of the last decades. Stone will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 22, at the Tivoli Theatre, 6350 Delmar Blvd. Directors who have previously been honored with a SLIFF Lifetime Achievement Award include Paul Schrader, John Sayles, Michael Apted, and Joe Dante.
Held on the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s assassination, the program will feature a screening of the director’s cut of Stone’s “JFK.” The evening will begin with a clip reel surveying Stone’s career, the presentation of the award, and a conversation between Stone and St. Louis Post-Dispatch film critic Joe Williams that explores the director’s career generally and “JFK” specifically.
At the conclusion of the interview, Stone will introduce a Kennedy-focused segment from his most recent work, “The Untold History of the United States,” and “JFK” will screen after the excerpt.
Stone served in the U.S. Army Infantry in Vietnam in 1967-68 and was decorated with the Bronze Star for Valor. After returning from Vietnam, he completed his undergraduate studies at New York University Film School in 1971, where he made several short films. Before establishing himself as a leading director, Stone wrote screenplays, many of them controversial, including the Oscar®-winning “Midnight Express” (1979), “Conan the Barbarian” (1982), “Scarface” (1983), and “Year of the Dragon” (1985).
Stone’s films have often reached wide, international audiences and have had significant cultural impact. These include “Salvador” (1985), “Wall Street” (1987), “Born on the Fourth of July” (1989), and “The Doors” (1991).
