Lakeshore Records Releasing ALTERED CARBON – Original Netflix Series Soundtrack Digitally February 9

Playing now on Netflix is the awesome sci-fi series ALTERED CARBON. It’s really great TV for those who love the genre!

The show features terrific original music by Composer Jeff Russo (STAR TREK: DISCOVERY, FARGO). For those who collect film scores and soundtracks, it’s definitely one to add to your collection.

Lakeshore Records will release ALTERED CARBON – Original Netflix Series Soundtrack digitally February 9, 2018. In addition to the original score, the album includes three songs including a cover of the Johnny Cash standard “Ain’t No Grave” performed by ALTERED CARBON star Renée Elise Goldsberry (Quellcrist Falconer) and Sune Rose Wagner’s performance of White Zombie’s “More Human Than Human”.

When asked about how he crafted the score for this unique futuristic universe, composer Russo said, “We wanted to play the emotional undercurrent of the story so we decided not to be too on the nose as far as the sci-fi aspect. In ALTERED CARBON, human bodies are interchangeable. So in this story, the idea of playing the core of a person becomes very important. I wanted to make sure to create thematic motifs that could be used to keep track of who was who in the ever-changing landscape of the story.”

Check out this clip. ALTERED CARBON is on Netflix now.

Based on the classic cyberpunk noir novel by Richard K. Morgan, ALTERED CARBON is an intriguing story of murder, love, sex, and betrayal, set more than 300 years in the future. In Netflix’s ALTERED CARBON, Society has been transformed by new technology: consciousness can be digitized; human bodies are interchangeable; death is no longer permanent. Takeshi Kovacs is the lone surviving soldier in a group of elite interstellar warriors who were defeated in an uprising against the new world order. His mind was imprisoned – on ice – for centuries until Laurens Bancroft, an impossibly wealthy, long-lived man, offers Kovacs the chance to live again. In exchange, Kovacs has to solve a murder … that of Bancroft himself.
“The first scene I scored was when Kovacs is brought back to life,” Russo explained. “It seemed appropriate to first work on the scene in which our main character is reborn into the body he would occupy for the series. That also allowed me to showcase the threading of voices throughout the score that would become its cornerstone sound.”

Russo won the Emmy and received two additional Emmy nominations for his thrilling and angst-producing score on FX’s Emmy and Golden Globe-winning series “Fargo.” Russo most recently completed the score for season one of CBS’s reimagining of the iconic cult-classic series “Star Trek: Discovery.” Russo also scored Starz’s “Counterpart,” starring J.K. Simmons, and “Power,” produced by Curtis Jackson “50 Cent,” as well FX’s hit series, “Legion,” based on Marvel Comic’s “X-Men,” starring Dan Ste-vens and Aubrey Plaza.

Additionally, Russo scored HBO’s Golden Globe and Emmy-nominated series “The Night Of,” starring John Turturro, FX’s John Singleton series, “Snowfall,” Netflix’s original show, “Altered Carbon,” and Annapurna Interactive’s indie video game, “What Remains of Edith Finch.” Russo also composed the music for Jon Avnet’s film “Three Christs,” starring Richard Gere, which premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival, and Craig Macneill’s film, “Lizzie,” starring Chloe Sevigny and Kristen Stewart, which premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.

Presented by DADA Films and required viewing, Lavinia Currier’s (The Passion in the Desert) breathtaking new film, OKA! is a fish-out-of-water tale of an ethnomusicologist from New Jersey who finds himself immersed in the colorful lives ofthe Bayake pygmies. Based on the memoir by ethnomusicologist Louis Sarno, who has lived with the pygmies for over 20 years, OKA! transports audiences to the vast forest of the Central African Republic into the magical world of the Bayaka and lyrically captures their music, dance, humor and exuberance, as well as the harsh realities they endure.

The forest dwelling tribe of Bayaka pygmies is famed for its acute hearing (‘Oka!’ means ‘listen!” in their Akka language). When the tribe’s revered leader hears a menacing new sound in the forest, his super-sensory powers send a message to “Big Ear,” his ethnomusicologist friend Larry Whitman (Kris Marshall, Love Actually), from his sickbed in New Jersey. Against doctor’s orders, Larry travels to his friends in Central Africa to help them battle Mayor Bassoun (Isaach de Bankolé,The Limits of Control), a powerful local politician who is helping Mr. Yi (Will Yun Lee, Die Another Day), a developer with a logging company intent on destroying the Bayaka’s forest home.

Refusing to give in, Larry and the pygmies humorously concoct a series of obstacles to try to prevent the loggers, all while continuing to enjoy their colorful way of life with music and dance inspired by the beauty of the African forest, its animals, and magical spirits.
Written by Louis Sarno & Lavinia Currier and Suzanne Stroh, OKA! is directed by Lavinia Currier and produced by James Bruce and Lavinia Currier. Conrad W. Hall is director of photography and music is by Chris Berry and the musicians of Yandombe.
