Lakeshore Records Releasing ALTERED CARBON – Original Netflix Series Soundtrack Digitally February 9

Playing now on Netflix is the awesome sci-fi series ALTERED CARBON. It’s really great TV for those who love the genre!

The show features terrific original music by Composer Jeff Russo (STAR TREK: DISCOVERY, FARGO). For those who collect film scores and soundtracks, it’s definitely one to add to your collection.

Lakeshore Records will release ALTERED CARBON – Original Netflix Series Soundtrack digitally February 9, 2018. In addition to the original score, the album includes three songs including a cover of the Johnny Cash standard “Ain’t No Grave” performed by ALTERED CARBON star Renée Elise Goldsberry (Quellcrist Falconer) and Sune Rose Wagner’s performance of White Zombie’s “More Human Than Human”.

When asked about how he crafted the score for this unique futuristic universe, composer Russo said, “We wanted to play the emotional undercurrent of the story so we decided not to be too on the nose as far as the sci-fi aspect. In ALTERED CARBON, human bodies are interchangeable. So in this story, the idea of playing the core of a person becomes very important. I wanted to make sure to create thematic motifs that could be used to keep track of who was who in the ever-changing landscape of the story.”

Check out this clip. ALTERED CARBON is on Netflix now.

Based on the classic cyberpunk noir novel by Richard K. Morgan, ALTERED CARBON is an intriguing story of murder, love, sex, and betrayal, set more than 300 years in the future. In Netflix’s ALTERED CARBON, Society has been transformed by new technology: consciousness can be digitized; human bodies are interchangeable; death is no longer permanent. Takeshi Kovacs is the lone surviving soldier in a group of elite interstellar warriors who were defeated in an uprising against the new world order. His mind was imprisoned – on ice – for centuries until Laurens Bancroft, an impossibly wealthy, long-lived man, offers Kovacs the chance to live again. In exchange, Kovacs has to solve a murder … that of Bancroft himself.
“The first scene I scored was when Kovacs is brought back to life,” Russo explained. “It seemed appropriate to first work on the scene in which our main character is reborn into the body he would occupy for the series. That also allowed me to showcase the threading of voices throughout the score that would become its cornerstone sound.”

Russo won the Emmy and received two additional Emmy nominations for his thrilling and angst-producing score on FX’s Emmy and Golden Globe-winning series “Fargo.” Russo most recently completed the score for season one of CBS’s reimagining of the iconic cult-classic series “Star Trek: Discovery.” Russo also scored Starz’s “Counterpart,” starring J.K. Simmons, and “Power,” produced by Curtis Jackson “50 Cent,” as well FX’s hit series, “Legion,” based on Marvel Comic’s “X-Men,” starring Dan Ste-vens and Aubrey Plaza.

Additionally, Russo scored HBO’s Golden Globe and Emmy-nominated series “The Night Of,” starring John Turturro, FX’s John Singleton series, “Snowfall,” Netflix’s original show, “Altered Carbon,” and Annapurna Interactive’s indie video game, “What Remains of Edith Finch.” Russo also composed the music for Jon Avnet’s film “Three Christs,” starring Richard Gere, which premiered at the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival, and Craig Macneill’s film, “Lizzie,” starring Chloe Sevigny and Kristen Stewart, which premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival.

MOMENTUM – The Review

Screen Shot 2015-10-28 at 4.42.15 PM

A robbery, (a diamond heist), comes off with what seems to be a minor glitch; one of the thieves, (all of them wearing identical body armor suits, head to toe, with voice altering microphones), is unmasked and can be identified by witnesses. All this during an argument by the thieves.

The unmasked robber is revealed to be not only a woman but young, and drop dead beautiful. This is Alex (Olga Kurylenko, Quantum of Solace, The Water Diviner), We learn that she was talked into this heist against her better judgment. She once had a relationship with the “brains” of this outfit.

Of course the thieves do not get away with their loot, a fortune in diamonds, without complications. Wouldn’t be an action movie if things didn’t get fouled up now would it? Turns out there is a flash drive among the jewels, with some very damaging and valuable information wanted by a mysterious old guy called only “the Senator” (Morgan Freeman, in every movie you can name).

A crew of cleaners, cold blooded hit men led by Mr. Washington, (James Purefoy, John Carter of Mars, Resident Evil) come looking for the flash drive. As you would expect much carnage and mayhem ensues.

Let me just say first how nice it is to see that Morgan Freeman (in what amounts to a cameo) can still play a cold blooded, heartless bastard. Freeman has been pegged as the “nice guy” for way too long. He made his reputation way back in 1987 in Street Smart, one of the first movies to find an audience almost completely on home video (VHS), playing a cold blooded sociopath.

The flash drive is of course what Alfred Hitchcock always referred to as “the MacGuffin”, the object that drives the narrative. And like its title MOMENTUM is all drive and forward momentum, with its foot on the gas, all the way to the floor!

This movie is built for speed, the action set pieces are very well staged, some of the plot turns are by the numbers, but when the project is this well thought out and executed that is a minor complaint, at best.

Olga Kurylenko makes for an excellent action hero, of course it turns out her skill set was learned the hard way. She does have friends on her side, but spends most of the running time fighting a seemingly endless supply of bad guys.

Which raises a question in my mind, in one of the action set pieces, early on, Alex takes one of the bad guys hostage to make her getaway, using him as a human shield. Would that really work? Especially in an action movie, you would expect the bad guys would not hesitate to shoot one of their own to get what they were hired to retrieve. But why quibble.

MOMENTUM is an excellent piece of work, filmed entirely in Capetown, South Africa, beautifully filmed, all the actors, even minor characters, are on top of the material. And the script is very good, full of surprises.

The ending is unbelievably suspenseful, worthy of the master, Hitchcock, I do not like to give out spoilers but Alex gets boxed in and wins the day in a totally unexpected way. MOMENTUM has lots of twists and turns, double and triple crosses, great characters, even the bad guys are sympathetic, and that ending is terrific.

Morgan Freeman has the last word in a coda that leaves MOMENTUM wide open for a sequel, which I personally would love to see.

Four out of five stars.

MOMENTUM IS AVAILABLE NOW ON DIGITAL HD & ON DEMAND. RELEASED ON BLU-RAY™ AND DVD ON DECEMBER 1, 2015

JOHN CARTER Trailer Is Here

Have a look at the first trailer for director Andrew Stanton’s JOHN CARTER , the action-adventure based on Edgar Rice Burroughs’ first novel, “A Princess of Mars.”

A fan of the Barsoom series of books since childhood, Academy Award®–winning director/writer Andrew Stanton’s explains what inspired him to bring “John Carter” to the big screen in his first foray into live action: “I stumbled across these books at the perfect age, I was about ten, and I just fell in love with the concept of a human finding himself on Mars, among amazing creatures in a strange new world. A stranger in a strange land. It was a very romantic aspect of adventure and science fiction. I always thought it would be cool to see this realized on the big screen.

“‘John Carter’ is a big epic adventure with romance and action and political intrigue,” continues Stanton. “Because the subject matter was written so long ago, it was also a bit of an origin of those kinds of stories—a comic book before there were comic books, an adventure story before that became a genre of its own.”

It’s obvious from the trailer that Stanton is excited to deliver both that untold story and never‐been‐seen cinematic world—and to deliver that same sense of excitement that first captivated him as a boy. “My goal is to want to believe it,” he says. “To believe it’s really out there. That same feeling you get from any good fantasy book…What would it be like..?”

IRONCLAD Trailers, Clip, Poster & Synopsis

Here are the first international trailers and clip for IRONCLAD aka BRAVEHEART 2. Guess Brian Cox has been pigeonholed seeing as this is pretty much the only kind of movie he does anymore. What he do, dig his BRAVEHEART costumes out of the closet? See for yourself.

Synopsis:

IRONCLAD recounts one of the most violent, pivotal moments in English medieval history – when a few good men fought against insurmountable odds to defend their country from a megalomaniac, blood-drunk king. Torn from the pages of history, the devastating battle for the castle of Rochester is a true story of honour, action and excitement. There will be blood.

The year is 1215. King John (Paul Giamatti) has been forced to sign the Magna Carta, a document that will ensure the freedom of men and form the basis of common law in England. Furious at having been forced to sign it, King John raises a vicious mercenary army and begins a rampage across the country to regain total power. But as the King’s army is on the brink of reaching London and taking back control of the country, one last castle stands between him and inevitable victory: Rochester.

Gathered together by Baron Albany (Brian Cox), a small band of rebel warriors gather inside Rochester intent on holding off King John until reinforcements arrive: a Templar Knight (James Purefoy) whose soul is wracked with guilt over the atrocities he has committed during the crusades and his burgeoning feelings for Isabel (Kate Mara), the beautiful lady of the castle and lonely wife of the aging Reginald de Cornhill (Derek Jacobi); battle-hardened mercenaries such as Beckett (Jason Flemying), who fight not for God and country, but for money and bloodlust; and young soldiers like Guy (Aneurin Barnard), who’ll taste blood and battle for the first time – and perhaps the last.

IRONCLAD stars James Purefoy, Paul Giamatti, Brian Cox, Robert Carlyle, Kate Mara, Jason Flemyng, Charles Dance, Derek Jacobi and Pete Postlethwaite. IRONCLAD opens in the U.K. on March 4th but has yet to find a U.S. distributor.

IRONCLAD Poster Makes the Blood Run

The new poster for Jonathan English’s Knights Templar epic IRONCLAD has been unveiled, and, courtesy of Empire Online, you can view this sucker in all of its bloody glory.   That’s not an adjective commonly used by Brits, either.   This thing is bloody and features a battle-worn James Purefoy covered in the red, red kroovy of a recent fight to the death.   In a nutshell, don’t expect to be seeing this thing released in US theater lobbies unedited.

Check it out in all its exquisite goriness right here:

Looks very cool, and that cast list is pretty astounding, as well.   It’s been awhile since we’ve seen thespians like Derek Jacobi and Charles Dance in our local cinemas.   It’s also nice to hear Giamatti stepping up his villainy game once again.   Can’t wait to see what everyone has in store for this film.

IRONCLAD is set to bloody up theaters sometimes in 2010.
