THE SANDLOT is a beloved film that over the last 23 years has gained quite a cult following thanks its joyous nostalgia that’s along the lines of A CHRISTMAS STORY. Unlike many movies that claim to be family films, THE SANDLOT actually is a “family film”. Kids like it for the  situations and dialogue, while adults relate to it as well. Young Scotty Smalls (Tom Guidry) moves into a new town and desperately wants to fit in with the rest of the neighborhood boys and in the summer of 1962, a bat and a ball is all it takes. A solid swing will send the ball sailing over the fence to never be seen again for it lands in Mr. Mertle’s (James Earl Jones) backyard, which is guarded by a humongous dog…a super slobbering “beast” that devours anything and everything. The high drama and dilemma of the summer is trying to retrieve a Babe Ruth autographed ball from the beast. Other cast members of note: Patrick Renna, Mike Vitar, Chauncey Leopardi, Denis Leary and Karen Allen. THE SANDLOT is nostalgic, sentimental and stuffed full of innocence and humor.

COMING 2 AMERICA – Review

Now that all that nasty February snow has finally melted away, many minds are filled with thoughts of travel, perhaps to an exotic destination. Or could you be yearning to revisit an old familiar spot, somewhere filled with laughter and dear friends from long ago? Sure with the vaccines rolling out, things are looking a lot brighter than last March (the last theatre advance screening was exactly a year to the weekend), but you may want to hold off before hitting those “getaway” websites. Why not combine those desires into a virtual reunion, mostly set in an exotic land that’s been in your movie dreams for nearly 33 years? That’s the major selling point for this weekend’s highly anticipated sequel. After his more-or-less traditional “final fade-out” happy ending in 1988, Prince Akeem boards the royal jet for Queens, NY for COMING 2 AMERICA.

For the most part, Prince Akeem (Eddie Murphy) is still living a happy life in the African kingdom of Zamunda with his US-born wife, Princess Lisa (Shari Headley). But the duo is now a quintet with their three daughters: eldest (and next in line to the throne) Meeka (KiKi Layne), teenage Omma (Bella Murphy), and pre-teen Tinashe (Akiley Love). Even father-in-law Cleo (John Amos) runs a McDowell’s burger place there. Still, the health of King Jaffe (James Earl Jones) is a big concern, as are the ramblings from nearby Nextdoria’s new leader, the crafty General Izzy (Wesley Snipes). He wants to form an alliance by marriage, with his loopy son marrying Meeka (who isn’t keen on the plan). But the court shaman Baba insists that Izzy will swoop in and take over since Akeem has no male heir. But the good, perhaps shocking, news is Baba’s vision of a son in America. Akeem is confused until his aide Semmi (Arsenio Hall) explains. On that fateful visit to Queens, before he met Lisa, two ladies led them back to their “crib”. As Semmi was “entertained” in another room, Akeem’s lungs were filled with smoke from the other lady’s powerful “herb”. As he drifted off, she made her move, and… he’s got a grown son in the states. Akeem (now the King) and Semmi board the royal golden jet and track down the new prince as he works as a ticket “scalper” for his uncle, outside a sports arena. Lavelle Junson (Jermaine Fowler) takes the duo back to the run-down apartment he shares with his never-married mother Mary (Leslie Jones). After some quick explanations, the Junsons return with them to the palace, with Uncle Reem (Tracy Morgan) joining them later. Now Izzy hatches a new plan and offers his sultry sister Bopoto (Teyana Taylor) as a country-uniting bride for Lavelle. Whoa, hold on, he is required to pass some big tests in order to gain his crown. And what happens when he falls for his palace hairstylist, the sweet Mirembe (Nomzamo Mbatha)? Could these nest family members bring about the invasion of peaceful Zamuda by Nextdoria, landing Izzy on the golden throne?

Murphy eases back into his role of Akeem as though it was a pair of comfy old slippers. The accent and the infectious grin are unchanged, though now we feel the “weight of the crown” as he takes on more responsibility, while still having time for lots of tender encouragement for his daughters. Though Akeem is often the “straight man” this time, Murphy does get to ‘cut loose” with his barbershop duo (what, is Saul well past a century now) and the Queens soul-singing superstar. Ditto for Hall who is still the over-efficient, micro-managing Semmi, but seems to have more fun as his barber, Baba, and the sleazy hometown pastor. As far the main “new faces”, Layne is the ultimate princess who needs no rescuing (the same is true for her sisters). Fowler is an affable, eager young hero, whose swagger makes up for the challenge of doing most of the “heavy lifting ” of the often unwieldy plot. As for his relatives, Jones as mother Mary needs to tighten up the volume dial on much of her dialogue. The attempt to emphasize the crude nature of the “foreigner” often feels abrasive. That’s also the case for Morgan, who shows up mainly to pick fights with Semmi and say anything that pops into his head (instead of that other dial, his “filter” switch is busted, especially after his many Wakanda gaffes). Snipes’ prancing and preening posturing as Izzy morph his threatening taunts into buffoonish bellowing. It’s great to have Headley back, but she mainly is placed in the background, there for an insert shot of irritation or annoyance. Speaking of shots, her bonding with Mary over cocktails comes off as a klutzy contrivance. It’s also terrific to see Amos as her pop, who continues his “David vs. Goliath” tussles with the big McD’s. And ditto for Jones, though his King is more of a grouch (shaking his fist at Semmi) than the first film’s stern, kindly patriarch. Oh, and Mbutha is a sweet, love interest deserving of a better side story.

Replacing John Landis in the director’s chair is Craig Brewer who guided Murphy two years ago in his award-winning lead performance in DOLEMITE IS MY NAME. Unfortunately, this film has little of the former’s down and dirty edge (the 88 original was rated “R” while this sequel goes out of its way to earn a “PG-13”). And though this flick has a couple more writers, it has a much lower joke to laugh ratio this time. Perhaps Landis might have added a bit of editing energy, but he would have been thwarted by the material. It seems to be going down a checklist in order to introduce more characters while making sure that nobody from the first one is slighted. Yet, somehow it still feels slight with too many big production numbers (lots of choreography at these state functions), trying to make up for dialogue exchanges that never land a “punch”. With so many now in dire financial straights, the opulence and extravaganze of Zamunda feels “off-key”. And America seems short-changed (after all, we’re in the title) with a ten-minute segment in the first act and a quick five minutes prior to the big finale. At least we get the still hysterical barbershop bits (could they support a spin-off). Oh, and I did chuckle at the cameo by SNL’s Colin Jost who has a connection to some classic comedy villainy. The meager merriment isn’t aided by the non-stop whimsey in its overbearing music score (sometimes comedy works best in silence, really). But all these critiques won’t matter to the original’s legion of adoring fans who have been in a state of rapturous ecstasy since the announcement of this production. They’ll be happy, though they certainly (and we) deserve a more polished entertainment than the hit-and-miss antics of COMING 2 AMERICA. Wakanda forever, Zemunda…well…

The legendary baseball comedy “The Sandlot” is back in movie theaters across the country for two days only this July – its first national theatrical run since its original release 25 years ago. Fathom Events and Twentieth Century Fox, in association with Island World, present “The Sandlot” in hundreds of select movie theaters on Sunday, July 22, at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. and Tuesday, July 24, at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. (all local times). Directed by David Mickey Evans, “The Sandlot” was a well-reviewed box-office success when it was first released in April 1993, but in the ensuing quarter-century it has become an integral film for both baseball fans and movie lovers – so much so that “The Sandlot has been named one of the best baseball movies of all time by Bleacher ReportMen’s JournalEsquire and Sporting News, among others.

Told in a charming, rambling fashion, “The Sandlot” is set in the summer of 1962, when Scotty Smalls (Tom Guiry) moves to a new town. Awkward and friendless, Scotty is on the brink of despondency when he runs into the never-ending baseball game that takes place on the sandlot behind a ramshackle house.

He’s befriended first by Benny Rodriguez (Mike Vitar) and ultimately by the whole team, including Hamilton “Ham” Porter (Patrick Renna), Michael “Squints” Palledorous (Chauncey Leopardi), Alan “Yeah-Yeah” McClennan (Marty York), Kenny DeNunez (Brandon Adams), Bertram Weeks (Grant Gelt), and Timmy and Tommy Timmons (Victor DiMattia and Shane Obedzinski). On and off the baseball field, they experience an unforgettable – and unforgettably hilarious – summer of discovery and friendship. “The Sandlot” also stars James Earl JonesKaren Allen and Denis Leary.

“Watching ‘The Sandlot’ has become an annual event that no summer is complete without – but since its original release, it has never had a nationwide theatrical re-release,” Fathom Events Vice President of Studio Relations Tom Lucas said. “We’re proud to be able to bring ‘The Sandlot’ to families and fans all around the country with this special cinema event, paired with a sneak peek at a brand-new Fox Sports documentary.”

GIMME SHELTER – The Review

GIMP00178-560x371

GIMME SHELTER, the new independent drama based on a true story, introduces us to Agnes “Apple” Bailey (Vanessa Hudgens),  a young pregnant teen running away from her abusive home in search of a safe place. Shuffled through in and out of foster homes, Apple goes out in search of her father Tom (Brendan Fraser), who left her and her mother June (Rosario Dawson) to fend for themselves after learning about the pregnancy so that he could continue on his life path. Finding him only leads to more heartache as she discovers his family, and life are thriving without her. Left with nowhere else to go, Apple agrees to try out a home for young mothers where she finally learns what family is all about.

While GIMME SHELTER is based on a true story, it’s not Apple’s story. It’s actually based on Kathy DiFiore, founder of the Several Sources Shelters. DiFiore runs several shelters for at risk youths, including pregnant young mothers who find themselves lost and without support. Rather than focusing on all of the work that she has done, they decided to shift the focus, and take us on a journey through the eyes of one of young mothers she saved. This really is a “saved” type of story that tries to be more meaningful than it actually is. This film tries way to hard at being a heartfelt, uplifting story. Everything is in your face and over the top, such as Apple’s running every time she runs away, or how the shelter was just what she needed to wrap her life up in a neat little bow. It felt more life an after-school special by the end, and less like a true story.

MV5BMTQ2NDU3NzkxN15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMTUxODc5MDE@._V1_SX640_SY720_

Vanessa Hudgens continues to shed her Disney kid roots, and shows a grown up, more developed style of acting while playing Apple. Her performance is incredible. She went through quite the transformation to find the character of Apple, including chopping her locks and gaining weight. Rosario Dawson is always wonderful, although I could have done without her teeth. Seriously, who designed those things? They looked like they were straight out of a cartoon. It left me a bit distracted, and took away from the scenes that she was in. Brendan Fraser has popped up twice this January (GIMME SHELTER and THE NUT JOB). He played his character a little too robotically for my taste. Even if the character was written like that, it was just too blah. I would have liked to have seen him a little too cold, or emotionally complex. Instead, the character was boring and flat.

GIMME SHELTER does has a slight pro-life agenda, but they do a good job of not shoving it in the viewers face. I wish I could say the same about the Christian agenda. This film thumps a bible at the audience whenever it can, overpowering their message of hope. GIMME SHELTER tries too hard, and should have just let the true story tell itself.

Top Ten Tuesday: Friendly Ghosts

From Japanese ghost stories such as RINGU (1998) and JU-ON (2002, remade as THE GRUDGE) to modern revisionist ghost stories such as Brad Anderson’s SESSION 9 (2001) and Ti West’s THE INNKEEPERS (2011), cinematic specters have nearly always been evil, or at the very least, malicious. Scary movies have long held the belief that ghosts should frighten us, and Hollywood had lined their pockets with that notion, but is it possible to make a good movie about “good” ghosts? We think so, and here’s our proof… our Top Ten Movies About Friendly Ghosts.

10. HEART AND SOULS (1993)

heart and souls

Anything starring Robert Downey, Jr. is worth checking out in my book, but this comedy was surprisingly enjoyable. Downey plays a guy used by four ghosts to reconcile their lives before moving on into the afterlife. The catch is, Downey is less than enthusiastic, but finds himself the catalyst for something bigger than himself and goes along for the ride. The cast is comprised of several well-known actors making the film that much more enjoyable.

9. TRULY, MADLY, DEEPLY (1990)

truly madly deeply

The 1991 charming, English love story of a woman, Nina, (Juliet Stephenson) who’s inconsolable with grief over the death of her lover and cellist, Jamie (Alan Rickman). Just when Nina thinks she’ll never recover from her loss, Jamie’s ghost returns and, much to her dismay, begins to muck about in her daily life, which includes bringing other ghosts along to watch, of all things, videos to pass the time. TRULY, MADLY, DEEPLY was Anthony Minghella’s (THE ENGLISH PATIENT, THE READER) directorial debut, universally loved by the critics, and was called the British version of GHOST.

8. THE CANTERVILLE GHOST (1944)

The popular short story by Oscar Wilde came to life in 1944 when Charles Laughton stepped into the role of the ghost of Sir Simon de Canterville. Cursed to roam an English manor until a descendant can redeem the family name through an act of bravery, the character is one for the ages, and Laughton’s interaction with co-star Robert Young is timeless. The first of eight adaptations of the story for film, THE CANTERVILLE GHOST is a timeless comedy that is just as beloved now as it was nearly 70 years ago.

7. FIELD OF DREAMS (1989)

field of dreams

“If you build it, he will come.” The ghosts of the Chicago Black Sox in FIELD OF DREAMS aren’t, exactly, bad, but that voice the serves as their prelude has got to go. Creepy as it may be, it, and the ghosts themselves, help Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) rekindle that loss feeling of youth and helps subside that foreboding feeling he has that he is turning in this father. The ending of FIELD OF DREAMS would make a grown man cry, and I’m sure it’s done just that time and time again. You’ll never look at playing catch with your father the same way twice.

6. THE FRIGHTENERS (1996)

frighteners

Not only was this a pivotal film as director Peter Jackson’s American breakout film, it was also one helluva funny good time! Michael J. Fox plays a guy who develops the ability to see and talk to ghosts, working with them to con unsuspecting suburbanites into paying for spirit extractions. The ghosts may have the act down in this film, but they were anything but mean… more like completely harmless.

5. THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR (1947)

THE GHOST AND MRS. MUIR (1947) is the impossible love story between a young widow, Mrs. Lucy Muir (Gene Tierney) and deceased Sea Captain Daniel Gregg (Rex Harrison, in one of his most colorful roles). Being a penniless widow, Mrs. Muir, along with her young daughter Anna (Natalie Wood), move into Gull Cottage on the English coast only to discover that it’s haunted by the previous owner, a loud-mouthed ghost reluctant to entrust it to a woman. The two form a friendship (with Lucy being the only one who can hear and see the Captain) and when seeing that she’s in need of money, the captain persuades “Lucia” to be the ghostwriter for his memoirs in the book Blood and Swash and they end up falling in love. With a great, moody score from Bernard Hermann and the Oscar nominated B & W cinematography from Charles Lang, THE GHOST AND MRS MUIR is one of those entrancing ghost stories and a fan- favorite.

4. BEETLEJUICE (1988)

Tim Burton’s dark comedy about a married couple who die and come back as ghosts is one of the most enjoyably original films from the last three decades. Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis are confined to their earthly home as a rich, dysfunctional family moves in and begins changing everything, leading the nice couple to employ the not-so-nice tactics of Michael Keaton’s “Beetlejuice” to scare them off.

3. GHOST (1984)

ghost

The late, iconic Patrick Swayze stars in the dramatic love story as a man who returns as a ghost in an attempt to protect Demi Moore, his wife, from impending danger with the help of a reluctant psychic, played by Whoopi Goldberg. The film is a staple for many women, but is also a great film on it’s own merit, earning Goldberg a Best Supporting Actress Oscar.

2. TOPPER (1937)

You need only take a gander at the cast list for TOPPER to realize there’s no nefarious dealings with the ghosts involved here. Cary Grant and Constance Bennett as George and Marion Kerby, respectively, are among some of the more memorable “good” ghosts around. Granted, they are charged by the minions of Purgatory to do one good deed, but that deed comes easy, and it is to the benefit of all that these wayward souls find their ultimate path to redemption. TOPPER is a laugh-riot classic. The characters and those who play them are among the main elements that make it so.

1. THE SIXTH SENSE (1999)

sixth sense

The big reveal of M. Night Shyamalan’s THE SIXTH SENSE is that Dr. Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) is in fact one of the ghosts that little Haley Joel Osment sees. This was not only a huge kick in the gut for audiences, but also cemented the fact that the film was one of the best modern ghost stories, period. Willis’ performance might be one of the strongest and most emotionally resonant of his career. While the ending is memorable, the ghostly leading man in THE SIXTH SENSE is what makes the picture enduring, even after you’re in on the twist.
