WAMG Rides Shotgun With Dom And Team At Universal Studios’ Fast & Furious Supercharged

Universal Studios Hollywood Fast Furious-Supercharged Ride

Contributed by Melissa Thompson and Gary Salem

WAMG was among members of the media and invited guests to witness the Grand Opening of Fast and Furious Supercharged, the latest movie-themed attraction at Universal Studios Hollywood. The presentation treated everyone to an extensive display of cars from the movies, a dance performance, speeches by top Universal execs and L.A.’s mayor, all topped off by an exciting assortment of live car stunts including a 90-foot jump through a billboard that caught us by surprise.

After the presentation concluded, we were lucky enough to go on a test-ride of the adrenalin-pumping, high-speed adventure with Dom, Hobbs and the rest of the Fast and Furious gang. Coming at the end of the famous Back-lot Tram Tour, Supercharged literally puts you smack dab in the middle of a high-flying, breakneck speed chase. The technology is pretty cool, in that with the giant 360-degree screen and 3D glasses, riders get to experience the action side by side with Dom and Leti, as they race in cars and a helicopter so close to you, you could literally touch them. Great sound and visual effects add to the experience that really makes you feel like you are in the movie! This is just downright fun and it’s a fantastic way to end the tour with a rush of adrenaline. Needless to say, we highly recommend it. 5 out of 5 stars!

Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson and Jason Statham attended Tuesday’s red carpet premiere of Universal Studios Hollywood‘s all-new thrill ride, “Fast & Furious—Supercharged”, and were among the first to experience the attraction, which debuts as the grand finale to the world famous Studio Tour.

Also attending were Fast & Furious series filmmakers Neal H. Moritz and Chris Morgan.

After experiencing “Fast & Furious—Supercharged,” Vin Diesel reacted by saying, “Wow…wow was that cool.  It’s incredible, it’s really remarkable. It’s not like anything I’ve ever seen.  Everyone on the tram said, ‘Can we do it again?’  It’s super cool!”

This dynamic new ride, inspired by Universal Pictures’ blockbuster film and featuring cast members from the series, including Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson and Luke Evans, is a technologically advanced mega-attraction designed to catapult guests into the high-stakes underground world of street racing at perceived speeds of 120 miles per hour.

A high-octane adventure, “Fast & Furious—Supercharged,” is conceived as a new installment to the Fast & Furious franchise that can only be experienced at the Entertainment Capital of L.A. The ride opens TODAY! (June 24, 2015)

An exciting hydraulic motion-based ride, “Fast & Furious—Supercharged” tells an original Fast & Furious story. The attraction fuses sophisticated special effects with a state-of-the-art 3D audio system and 3D-HD imagery projected onto the world’s longest and most expansive 360-degree screen.  Spanning nearly 400 feet in length to encircle Studio Tour guests within a newly constructed 65,000-square-foot structure on the legendary backlot, the sprawling custom-built screen employs 34, 4K projectors and a specially configured projection system to envelop guests in unprecedented realism.

Coupled with an intense blend of thrilling visceral effects, “Fast & Furious–Supercharged” takes guests on a wild ride that begins the moment they board the Studio Tour.  Exclusive interstitial content filmed with cast members is featured on the tram monitors, highlighting interactions as the cast engages guests en route to the climactic ride.  Along the tram route and featured at the ride, sightings of numerous prop cars from the Fast & Furious series, including Dom’s iconic Dodge Charger, enhance the story.

“We’ve perfected an exciting new form of immersive entertainment that combines over-the-top hyper-realistic action adventure with exhilarating custom-made special effects that will transport guests into the thrilling world of Fast & Furious, said Mark Woodbury, President of Universal Creative.  “Our collaboration with Universal Pictures to create an authentic experience through epic storytelling and technological breakthroughs continues to be a hallmark of Universal Studios Hollywood.”

I got a first-look at FURIOUS 7’s 1967 Camaro driven by character Roman Pearce (Tyrese Gibson) and the Subaru WRX Forza that character Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) drives. There’s a great costume display, including the original attire worn by Vin Diesel as Dominic “Dom” Toretto and Dwayne Johnson as Luke Hobbs in the new action thriller. Plus, while walking through CityWalk, there’s a DJ party at the “5 Towers” stage, spinning songs from the film series’ entire music library, including new tracks from the FURIOUS 7 soundtrack.

FURIOUS 7 – The Review

furious_7_2015_movie-1280x800

Now more than ever before Dominic Toretto and his gang… sorry, family, since he reminds us of this many times… feel less like a ragtag group of hijackers and car thieves and more like a group of superheroes. After seven films of watching these guys narrowly escape death and drive cars under oil tankers and jump through buildings and take down a military jet and even a tank, it seems almost inevitable for the series to embrace the fact that this is a family of super-powered beings that got hit by a radioactive car. Of course, these characters have a lot of heart and are all given amiable character scenes and traits, but in FURIOUS 7, now more than ever before, their logic and gravity-defying stunts reach new heights. Quite literally, as a matter of fact, since we see these cars get dropped from the sky and fly through not one but two buildings. And like any exaggerated comic book film, these stunts result in barely a scratch on their chiseled bodies. All the while I think I got a finger cramp just typing this review.

Director James Wan, sitting in the driver’s seat for the first time in the franchise, seems fully aware of this fact for better or for worse. He’s aware that the tongue is now firmly in the cheek and even gives into this superhero metaphor by showing Hobbs watch a certain mean and green classic hero on the television in one scene. This theme is extended to many of the actions scenes as well. Fans of the series expect these sensational stunts by now. The films have naturally evolved past the point of realism and into pure cinematic escapism. If seeing this motley crew barely escape death all the while speeding around in fast cars and creating vehicular mayhem isn’t quite your speed, then I can’t tell you fast enough to bow out of this race. But for my money, the FAST & FURIOUS is one of the most entertaining cinematic series of my “generation,” and so when I witness Brian O’Connor fly through the air like superman or see Dom stomp with a heavy foot on a crumbling cement floor causing it to weaken more, I accept it because I care for these characters too much to not. I’ve watched them grow for seven highly entertaining films now. This series knows exactly what it wants to be and is very aware of audience’s expectations. With part 7, we may be very far from the amateur street racers that we were first introduced to in the earlier films, that being said, even superheroes become more attune to their powers over time and realize what they are actually capable of.

The film opens with Dom, Brian, and the rest of the FAST family being hunted by Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) – the older brother of the 6th film’s baddie Owen Shaw (Luke Evans). When Dom finds out that Han (Sung Kang) is killed by Deckard in Tokyo, he sets out to avenge Han’s death. It’s through the help of a special forces agent (Kurt Russell) on the trail of a computer program called the “God’s Eye,” that Dom realizes that getting a hold of this program and its programmer might help him get his revenge on Shaw and stop his murderous streak.

furious-7-08

FURIOUS 7 introduces a number of new characters into this cinematic universe. The most noteworthy is Jason Statham as our new big baddie. His sinister presence is immediately felt with an audacious and hilarious opening scene that shows exactly what he’s capable of. He lends the film a sense of uneasiness as you feel like he could appear around any corner at any time. A fitting comparison could be made to the original TERMINATOR, as you truly believe he is an unstoppable killing machine. His screen time is quite a bit less than his onscreen brother from the previous film or the once villain now turned hero Hobbs (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) in FAST FIVE, but he has to also make room for newcomers Kurt Russell, Nathalie Emmanuel, and Ronda Rousey. Even though his character is listed in the credits as Mr. Nobody, Russell is instantly memorable as an American special teams leader with a dry sense of humor and a penchant for Belgium beer (Yes… the “artisan/craft beer” vs “drinkable beer” debate continues on!) It’s great watching him add some levity to the film in a role that feels in the same vein as his working class smart-ass role from BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA.

What’s most noteworthy is that the stunts are bigger than ever in the seventh film. There are three major action scenes and they feel like mini movies given how long and multi-faceted they are. While the previous film may have packed more action through a constant barrage of rapid-fire scenes, the action here is relegated to three scenes that are quite impressive given their scope and scale. The highlight is the sequence that begins with the cars dropping from a cargo plane onto a mountain in Azerbaijan. What follows is an exhilarating and smartly staged sequence that feels like a small nod to the high-jacking of the eighteen-wheelers in the original FAST film but done on a much grander scale. Cars explode, barrel down tree-covered rocky hills, and … well… did I mention they fall out of a plane and land perfectly on a road?

The final action sequence really takes the series to the next level by turning an entire section of downtown LA into a giant game of Battleship. Each character has his own mission and is constantly engaged in a fight with either a pipe swinging Jason Statham, a quick on his feet Tony Jaa, or a hi-tech military drone with tracking missile capability. James Wan follows close to the same footprints left behind by Justin Lin and lets the action tell a story. We don’t just see aimless shooting between characters, then cut to an explosion, and end scene. Each action sequence relays character traits and tells a cohesive story that’s easy to follow. Yes, they are a team… shit, I mean family… but they are also individuals, and the closing sequence really shows each mini adventure which ultimately forms a larger and quite impressive action spectacle.

Furious-7-Pic-47

This being Paul Walker’s last ride, there’s an air of inevitability to all the theatrics. His story arc carries much more weight given the unfortunate circumstances. Maybe it’s my own sentimental connection to this franchise, but the additional scenes that were filmed to wrap up his storyline entirely worked for me – the same cannot be said for a few of the clunky dramatic scenes between Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez. Wan and writer Chris Morgan do justice to Walker’s life and legacy which will no doubt be always connected to this franchise. How they conclude Brian’s storyline is appropriate and respectful, no doubt leaving many fans with a tear or two.

FURIOUS 7 (or FURIOUS SEVEN as the opening credits state) will always live on as a somber but memorable moment in this franchise. Exciting races, cool cars, and girls in slinky outfits may be what this series once represented on the surface, but it was the characters and the family angle that kept most of us around after all these years. Explosive summer films come and go during the weekends every year, and yet the FAST & FURIOUS films continue to speed forward showing no signs of slowing down. Although this family lost one of its most important leaders, I can’t help but think that they will live to fight another day, just like any superhero team would.

The non-stop action and charged atmosphere shift into high gear as CityWalk’s state of the art outdoor concert venue, “5 Towers,” celebrates the FURIOUS 7 takeover with a D.J. party spinning songs from the film series’ entire music library, including new sounds from the latest movie soundtrack as part of the opening weekend festivities from Thursday, April 2 through Saturday, April 4.

Furious 7

Universal Studios Hollywood will join in on the takeover as the theme park prepares to introduce its all-original thrill ride “Fast & Furious—Supercharged” on Thursday, June 25.

“Fast & Furious—Supercharged” is a technologically advanced, epic ride that reunites stars from the Fast & Furious series in a groundbreaking mega-attraction, conceived as a new installment to the dynamic Fast & Furious films that can only be experienced at The Entertainment Capital of L.A.  Featuring characters made famous by Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson and Luke Evans, “Fast & Furious—Supercharged” will catapult guests into the high-stakes underground world of fast cars in a harrowing escapade—at perceived speeds in excess of 120 miles per hour—to save one of their own from an international crime cartel.

Located within Universal Plaza, a convergence of original Fast & Furious prop cars will be on display for guests and fans of the film series, including Dom’s 1970 Dodger Charger R/T.  The black, V8-powered car first appeared in The Fast and the Furious and has been a mainstay in every action-packed film since. The grey 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner that Dom first drove in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift will also be on display, along with the 1970 Plymouth Barracuda that belonged to Letty in Fast & Furious 6.  The car display will be available throughout the summer.

Check out this behind-the-scenes look at “Fast & Furious—Supercharged.” The 90-second footage offers insightful perspective on the making of this adrenaline-charged attraction along with interviews with Fast & Furious franchise cast members and stars of the ride, including Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez and Tyrese Gibson.

Composer Brian Tyler’s Score For FURIOUS 7 Available On March 31

Back Lot Music - Furious 7 Score

Back Lot Music will release the score soundtrack for FURIOUS 7, Universal Pictures’ upcoming action-thriller directed by James Wan and starring Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson on March 31, 2015, it was announced today. The FURIOUS 7 Original Motion Picture Score features new music by award-winning composer Brian Tyler.

FURIOUS 7 hits theaters nation-wide on April 3.

Tyler is a composer and conductor of more than 70 films and won Film Composer of the Year at the 2014 Cue Awards.  He has been the composer for three previous films in the FAST & FURIOUS franchise, having scored the box-office hits Fast Five, Fast & Furious and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift for director Justin Lin.  In 2010, Tyler arranged and conducted Jerry Goldsmiths’s film logo music for Universal Pictures and composed a theme for the 100-year anniversary of the studio, making him a valuable part of the Universal family.

Discussing his creation of the score for FURIOUS 7, Tyler commented: “It was a pleasure to collaborate with James [Wan] on FURIOUS 7, as he wanted the emotion of the themes to be the primary focus.  The music uses modern recording techniques, vintage modular synthesizers, mashed-up beats, drums and tweaked remix elements along with classic film scoring traditions including full orchestra, piano, voice and classical guitar.  I am so proud of the movie, and I dedicate the score to the memory of Paul Walker and all the joy he brought.”

Furious 7

In describing Tyler’s score for FURIOUS 7, Wan remarked, “Brian’s amazing score gave this movie life. He did an incredible job of crafting an electrifying score for the bombastic action moments, one that is balanced by the beautiful and emotional themes of the characters that underline the heart of this movie.”

Tyler won his first World Soundtrack Award in 2002 for Best New Film Composer of the Year.  He has received three Emmy Award nominations, 13 BMI Music Awards, five ASCAP Music Awards, and recently won 12 Goldspirit Awards, including Composer of the Year.  In addition, he was nominated for a 2014 BAFTA Games Award and was inducted into the music branch of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2010.

Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and Jordana Brewster return to form a furious team of seven family members united in purpose.  They are joined by Fast fan favorites Elsa Pataky and Lucas Black, as well as new additions to the ensemble including Jason Statham, Kurt Russell, Nathalie Emmanuel, Djimon Hounsou, Ronda Rousey and Tony Jaa.

With FURIOUS 7, this crew heads across the globe for one last ride together in their most gravity-defying and emotional adventure to date.  And as they form a tighter band than ever: The Furious 7—Dom, Brian, Hobbs, Letty, Roman, Tej and Mia—they will face their greatest threat yet in places as far away as Abu Dhabi and Azerbaijan…and as familiar as the streets they call home.

Ludacris And Vin Diesel Take You Behind-The-Scenes of FURIOUS 7 In New Featurettes

Furious 7

Director James Wan’s FURIOUS 7 opens in less than two weeks and fans of the franchise can’t wait for the latest chapter of the franchise.

“Ticket pre-sales have been robust, with Fandango reporting that FURIOUS 7 is outpacing the sixth “Fast & Furious” film at a similar point in its sales cycle, and MovieTickets.com saying the new film’s reservations are three times that of its predecessor,” according to Variety. Estimates have the film at $115 million at the box office when it debuts on April 3rd.

The sleeper summer hit of 2001 racked up $207 million at the worldwide box office. Over the course of six films that have successively stoked passion in an ever-expanding, die-hard audience and an astounding $2.4 billion in receipts, Universal Pictures’ record-smashing homegrown franchise has become the studio’s most-profitable and longest-running. Impressively, on social media platforms, fan following for the movies and cast has grown into the biggest of any active franchise.

Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and Jordana Brewster return to form a furious team of seven family members united in purpose. I don’t have friends. I got family.

These seven words have come to exemplify the very heart of the Fast & Furious franchise, both for the faithful team of characters on screen and the band of actors, filmmakers and crew who have grown as tight as any bloodline over the course of seven movies together. At its outset, 15 years ago, no one could have foreseen that the destiny of this story about a team of street racers in East L.A. would transform into one of the most popular and enduring motion-picture serials of all time.

Now, FURIOUS 7 arrives as the crowning achievement in this ongoing saga—the best, biggest and most fulfilling Fast & Furious movie yet. For every person in the Fast & Furious family—those on screen, those behind the camera and those who count themselves among its vast and varied fans around the world: This one is special.

FURIOUS 7 stars Vin Diesel, Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges and Jordana Brewster surprised a packed house at the screening of the film in Los Angeles.

With family firmly rooted at its core, the Fast & Furious series has evolved into a touchstone for moviegoers following these compelling characters, whose journeys continue to unlock and reveal surprising emotional depth. It has escalated into a phenomenon that has taken the street-racing outlaws to pull off nearly impossible feats in far-flung locales from Japan, Mexico and the Dominican Republic to Brazil, the Canary Islands and Great Britain.

Now, with FURIOUS 7, this crew heads across the globe for one last ride together in their most gravity-defying and emotional adventure to date.

Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, and Universal Pictures unveiled the luxury Fast & Furious 777 airliner at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

Actor/producer Vin Diesel was on hand as Etihad Airways Flight 171 arrived from Abu Dhabi to kick off the global junket and world premiere of FURIOUS 7.

The film arrives in theaters on April 3.

Representing a welcome first for the franchise, the Fast & Furious 777 will fly the direct route between Abu Dhabi and Los Angeles, which Etihad Airways opened in June 2014. The airline is also a sponsor of the FURIOUS 7 world premiere, which takes place in Los Angeles on April 1.

As the United Arab Emirates offered an opportunity to inject striking elements and locales into the series’ mythology, Abu Dhabi became a key location for the Furious 7 production. Over the course of two weeks in April 2014, the team lensed in areas outside Abu Dhabi in the Liwa Desert, as well as in the city center at such locations as the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Emirates Palace hotel, the Yas Marina F1 race circuit and the Etihad Towers. Considering Abu Dhabi’s striking skyline—one accentuated with stunning architectural achievements—aerial shots of the skyscrapers were mandatory.

“When we began filming The Fast and the Furious in 2000, if you told me that we would one day have our logo on a wide-body jet, I would have said you were crazy,” said producer Neal H. Moritz, who has shepherded all seven films in the series. “We are so honored that Etihad has partnered with us to support this very personal film, and we thank the people of the United Arab Emirates for all the kindness and graciousness they showed throughout production.”

The Fast & Furious decal will remain on the plane for the next four to six months.

Vin Diesel

The film is rated PG 13 for prolonged frenetic sequences of violence, action and mayhem, suggestive content and brief strong language.
