Listen To The First Track From Composer Tom Holkenborg’s Score For FURIOSA: A MAD MAX SAGA

WaterTower Music is excited to announce the release of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) on May 17th with music by Grammy-nominated multi-platinum producer, musician, composer Tom Holkenborg. The first single is available NOW: “Dementus is Gaining”

The full soundtrack will be available May 17th. Vinyl and CD formats will be available for Pre-Order on May 24th through Mutant Records. It is released in conjunction with Warner Bros. Pictures “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker George Miller and slated for a May 24th, 2024 release in theaters and IMAX nationwide and internationally beginning May 22.

Tom Holkenborg’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga soundtrack is the follow-up to his widely acclaimed score album from 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road.

Holkenborg’s score is driven by George Miller’s desire to capture the inhumanity of the Wasteland through Furiosa’s eyes. The movie’s music embodies Tom’s full-contact approach to composition and his mastery of sound design and classical scoring. Tom’s role on Furiosa is especially unique, as he not only composed the score, but also worked alongside Academy Award-winning supervising sound editor Rob Mackenzie to mix the film’s final audio.

Holkenborg’s film scoring credits have grossed over $2 billion at the box office and include “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “Deadpool,” “Black Mass,” “Alita Battle Angel,” “Divergent,” “Brimstone,” “The Dark Tower,” “Tomb Raider,” “Terminator: Dark Fate,” both parts of the record-setting “Sonic the Hedgehog,” along with the recent hits “Justice League: The Snyder Cut” and “Godzilla x Kong”. Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth star in Academy Award-winning mastermind George Miller’s “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” the much-anticipated return to the iconic dystopian world he created more than 40 years ago with the seminal “Mad Max” films. Miller now turns the page again with an all-new original, standalone action adventure that will reveal the origins of the powerhouse character from the multiple Oscar-winning global smash “Mad Max: Fury Road.” The new feature from Warner Bros. Pictures is produced by Miller and his longtime partner, Oscar-nominated producer Doug Mitchell (“Mad Max: Fury Road,” “Babe”), under their Australian-based Kennedy Miller Mitchell banner.

As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.

Taylor-Joy stars in the title role, and along with Hemsworth, the film also stars Tom Burke and Alyla Browne.

Miller penned the script with “Mad Max: Fury Road” co-writer Nico Lathouris. Miller’s behind-the-scenes creative team includes first assistant director PJ Voeten and action designer Guy Norris, director of photography Simon Duggan (“Hacksaw Ridge,” “The Great Gatsby”), composer Tom Holkenborg, supervising sound editor Robert Mackenzie, editor Eliot Knapman, visual effects supervisor Andrew Jackson and supervising colorist Eric Whipp. The team also includes other longtime collaborators: production designer Colin Gibson, editor Margaret Sixel, production sound Ben Osmo, costume designer Jenny Beavan and hair and makeup designer Lesley Vanderwalt, each of whom won an Oscar for their work on “Mad Max: Fury Road.”

What a Lovely Day! MAD MAX FURY ROAD Midnights This Weekend at The Tivoli

MAD MAX FURY ROAD, the best movie of the 21st century so far, screens midnights this weekend (August 31st and September 1st) at The Tivoli Theater as part of their ‘Reel Late at The Tivoli’ Midnight Series.

Thirty years after writer/director George Miller led us all to believe his Mad Max franchise had run out of gas with MAD MAX BEYOND THUNDERDOME, he resurrected the Road Warrior with a larger budget, a bigger crew, and more vehicles to destroy. Well worth the wait, MAD MAX FURY ROAD, released last May, was pure dynamite, with enough wit and ingenuity to put all recent action films to shame. It richly deserved the six Oscars that it won and should have won the other four it was nominated for (especially Best Picture – SPOTLIGHT?!?!?!…..puh…leeeez!)

Not a sequel nor prequel nor reboot, MAD MAX FURY ROAD is simply another installment in the post-apocalyptic chronicles of Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy replacing “Mad Mel” Gibson). He’s introduced as a man haunted by flashbacks of past barbarity, mostly involving a young child he failed to protect. He’s seized by a band of pale-faced desert outlaws known as War Boys, and taken to The Citadel, a settlement where his uninfected blood will be gathered. The War Boys do the bidding of their masked ruler, Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne – who played Toecutter in the original MAD MAX 36 years ago – not that anyone would recognize him but it’s a cool touch). Max seems doomed until he meets Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron), a hard-bitten, one-armed driver who has organized an escape for herself and Joe’s five wives (I guess he’s Mormon). Wanting his spouses  (including Riley Keough, Zoë Kravitz, and a pregnant Rosie Huntington-Whiteley) back, Joe and his band of deranged toadies give chase. Max helps Furiosa in the road rage scrimmage against these degenerates as they sprint their way across the desolate Wasteland to the safe oasis known as Green Place.

MAD MAX FURY ROAD was the movie every action had been waiting for since THE ROAD WARRIOR and no one was disappointed. Director Miller staged his film as one long, gonzo action set piece, mostly involving custom vehicles of death barreling down deserted post-apocalyptic highways at breakneck speeds. Miller’s adherence to practical effects made CGI-neutered noise like FURIOUS 7 look removed and low-rent. Some of MAD MAX FURY ROAD – the sand storm and Curiosa’s left arm – were CG-enhanced but when you see out-there vehicular carnage and stunts on an epic scale – motorcycles flying over huge trucks in order to drop fire bombs on top while actors balance precariously between vehicles – there’s a palpable sense of danger because you knew that’s for real. The action had none of the confused visual sense so prevalent in movies like FURIOUS 7 and the Transformers franchise that use ridiculous fast editing that makes keeping track of who is where or doing what during a fast-cut sequence nearly impossible.

In keeping with Gibson’s precedent, Hardy’s Max doesn’t talk much. He looks ragged and disheveled, his leather jacket dusty and cracked, his face covered at first with a Bane-like mask. Hardy did as good a job as anyone could, but my one complaint about MAD MAX FURY ROAD was that I miss Gibson. Mel was 59 when the film was made, hardly too old to repeat this role (Harrison Ford was still playing Indy at 66), and his familiar, haunted Max would have made this already-amazing film the greatest movie ever made! (and would have turned around his self-imposed career slump). But Charlize Theron’s Furiosa was really the film’s true center. The actress was terrific and gets as much screen time as Hardy, maybe more, and its Furiosa’s quest that is the driving force of the story. The R rating doesn’t quite seem justified. MAD MAX FURY ROAD was violent and intense but seems to be cut around the really gruesome stuff, as if they were shooting for a PG-13. But that’s not something you even notice as Miller brilliantly sustains the edge-of-your-seat 120-minute chase with crisp editing, sharp photography by John Seale, and a pounding music score by Junkie XL. Nothing is spared in MAD MAX FURY ROAD and the sheer inventiveness of it demands repeat viewings, so buckle up, spray-paint your mouth silver, and enjoy the ride when it returns to the big screen this weekend midnights over at The Tivoli (6350 Delmar Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63130) at midnight!?!

The Tivoli Announces the ‘Reel Late’ Midnight Line-Up – THE WITCH, ERASERHEAD, MAD MAX


“You killed Ted, you medieval dickweed!”


Another brilliant lineup of midnight movies for the ‘Reel Late at The Tivoli’ to kick off the summer 2018 season. It’s an especially good variety of titles that will draw the late night movie buff crowd with several retro surprises. The Midnight Movie experience has always catered to a college-age crowd and that’s the way it should be. The oldest film this time is David Lynch’s ERASERHEAD from 1978 and the most recent is THE WITCH  from 2015. There’s a Miyazaki of course (SPIRITED AWAY) and a couple of standards including BILL AND TED’S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE and GHOST IN THE SHELL . I’ve been hosting the midnight show at The Tivoli for ten years now and I’m certain CRIMSON PEAK, BUT I’M A CHEERLEADER and THE WITCH, all new to the Tivoli midnight roster,  will draw good crowds.


The Tivoli is located in St. Louis at 6350 Delmar Blvd. in “the Loop”

The Top 21 Movies of the 21st Century……So Far!

It’s one thing to come up with a list of the best movies in any given year, but the best movies of a century that’s just in its 16th year? We Are Movie Geeks polled a group of 30 carefully-selected (and mostly St. Louis-based) movie critics, movie bloggers, movie academics, movie promoters, and just plain old movie fans and asked for a list, in order of preference, of their Top Ten Favorite Films so far this century. Somewhere among the endless superhero blockbusters, franchise reboots, and sequels, some really great movies have come out in the last 16 years. And some of them were indeed superhero blockbusters, franchise reboots, and sequels! The 21st century has another 84 years to go, and there’s no doubt that these choices will change as the years go by, but since it’s doubtful any of those polled will be around when the century ends (unless Stephen Tronicek – born in 1999 – makes it to 101), we might as well do this now. To come up with our top 21, a super-scientific algorithm was generated….just kidding! We simply scored each movie based on its rank in any given list. If a movie was #1 on any list, it received 10 points, #2 received 9 points, and so on (a movie ranked #10 received 1 point – get it?). Of course, all of these lists are highly subjective and some favorite titles will be omitted, so prepare to argue with the selections of these 30 film buffs (and yes, we’re naming names!).

MAD MAX FURY ROAD – Midnights This Weekend at The Tivoli! What a Lovely Day!

MAD MAX FURY ROAD, the best movie of the 21st century so far, screens midnights this weekend (April 22nd and 23rd) at The Tivoli Theater as part of their ‘Reel Late at The Tivoli’ Midnight Series.

Thirty years after writer/director George Miller led us all to believe his Mad Max franchise had run out of gas with MAD MAX BEYOND THUNDERDOME, he resurrected the Road Warrior with a larger budget, a bigger crew, and more vehicles to destroy. Well worth the wait, MAD MAX FURY ROAD, released last May, was pure dynamite, with enough wit and ingenuity to put all recent action films to shame. It richly deserved the six Oscars that it won and should have won the other four it was nominated for (especially Best Picture – SPOTLIGHT?!?!?!…..puh…leeeez!)

Not a sequel nor prequel nor reboot, MAD MAX FURY ROAD is simply another installment in the post-apocalyptic chronicles of Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy replacing “Mad Mel” Gibson). He’s introduced as a man haunted by flashbacks of past barbarity, mostly involving a young child he failed to protect. He’s seized by a band of pale-faced desert outlaws known as War Boys, and taken to The Citadel, a settlement where his uninfected blood will be gathered. The War Boys do the bidding of their masked ruler, Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne – who played Toecutter in the original MAD MAX 36 years ago – not that anyone would recognize him but it’s a cool touch). Max seems doomed until he meets Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron), a hard-bitten, one-armed driver who has organized an escape for herself and Joe’s five wives (I guess he’s Mormon). Wanting his spouses  (including Riley Keough, Zoë Kravitz, and a pregnant Rosie Huntington-Whiteley) back, Joe and his band of deranged toadies give chase. Max helps Furiosa in the road rage scrimmage against these degenerates as they sprint their way across the desolate Wasteland to the safe oasis known as Green Place.

MAD MAX FURY ROAD was the movie every action had been waiting for since THE ROAD WARRIOR and no one was disappointed. Director Miller staged his film as one long, gonzo action set piece, mostly involving custom vehicles of death barreling down deserted post-apocalyptic highways at breakneck speeds. Miller’s adherence to practical effects made CGI-neutered noise like FURIOUS 7 look removed and low-rent. Some of MAD MAX FURY ROAD – the sand storm and Curiosa’s left arm – were CG-enhanced but when you see out-there vehicular carnage and stunts on an epic scale – motorcycles flying over huge trucks in order to drop fire bombs on top while actors balance precariously between vehicles – there’s a palpable sense of danger because you knew that’s for real. The action had none of the confused visual sense so prevalent in movies like FURIOUS 7 and the Transformers franchise that use ridiculous fast editing that makes keeping track of who is where or doing what during a fast-cut sequence nearly impossible.

In keeping with Gibson’s precedent, Hardy’s Max doesn’t talk much. He looks ragged and disheveled, his leather jacket dusty and cracked, his face covered at first with a Bane-like mask. Hardy did as good a job as anyone could, but my one complaint about MAD MAX FURY ROAD was that I miss Gibson. Mel was 59 when the film was made, hardly too old to repeat this role (Harrison Ford was still playing Indy at 66), and his familiar, haunted Max would have made this already-amazing film the greatest movie ever made! (and would have turned around his self-imposed career slump). But Charlize Theron’s Furiosa was really the film’s true center. The actress was terrific and gets as much screen time as Hardy, maybe more, and its Furiosa’s quest that is the driving force of the story. The R rating doesn’t quite seem justified. MAD MAX FURY ROAD was violent and intense but seems to be cut around the really gruesome stuff, as if they were shooting for a PG-13. But that’s not something you even notice as Miller brilliantly sustains the edge-of-your-seat 120-minute chase with crisp editing, sharp photography by John Seale, and a pounding music score by Junkie XL. Nothing is spared in MAD MAX FURY ROAD and the sheer inventiveness of it demands repeat viewings, so buckle up, spray-paint your mouth silver, and enjoy the ride when it returns to the big screen this weekend midnights over at The Tivoli (6350 Delmar Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63130) at midnight!?!

The Tivoli Announces the ‘Reel Late’ Midnight Line-Up – MAD MAX, EVIL DEAD, Miyazaki

“Do you know what they call a Quarter Pounder with cheese in France?”

Another brilliant lineup of midnight movies for the ‘Reel Late at The Tivoli’ to kick off the 2016 season. It’s a typically good variety of titles that will draw the late night movie buff crowd with a couple of retro surprises. The Midnight Movie experience has always catered to a college-age crowd and that’s the way it should be. ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW with live shadow cast with the Samurai Electricians kicks off the new schedule on April 8th and 9th. The oldest film this time is the original THE EVIL DEAD from 1983 and the most recent is last year’s winner of 6 Oscars (and deserving of at least 4 more) MAD MAX: FURY ROAD.  There’s a Miyazaki thrown in there for attendance insurance and a handful of standards including BLADE RUNNER and PULP FICTION. I believe ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND and the original EVIL DEAD are new to the Tivoli midnight roster, and I suspect they will draw good crowds.

NBR President Annie Schulhof said, “2015 has been a banner year for popular cinema. We are thrilled to be awarding George Miller and Ridley Scott, two iconic filmmakers at the top of their game, while also celebrating the next generation of talent.”

 The 2015 William K. Everson Film History Award recipient is Cecilia De Mille Presley, the granddaughter of legendary director, Cecil B. DeMille. As Vice Chair of the National Film Preservation Foundation, she has devoted her life to film preservation. In honor of her grandfather’s legacy she has co-authored the book CECIL B. DEMILLE: THE ART OF THE HOLLYWOOD EPIC.  

For 106 years, the National Board of Review has dedicated its efforts to the support of domestic and foreign cinema as both art and entertainment. This year, over 250 films (studio, independent, foreign-language, animated, and documentary) were viewed by this select group of film enthusiasts, filmmakers, professionals, academics, and students. These screenings were frequently followed by in-depth discussions with directors, actors, producers, and screenwriters. Voting ballots were tabulated by the accounting firm of Lutz and Carr, LLP.

The National Board of Review honors diverse members of the film community at their annual Awards Gala, which also acts as a fundraiser for student grant philanthropy. Hosted by Willie Geist, co-host of NBC’s TODAY and MSNBC’s Morning Joe, this year’s gala will take place on January 5, 2016 at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City.

MAD MAX: FURY ROAD Surpasses $300 Million At Worldwide Box Office

Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Village Roadshow Pictures’ MAD MAX: FURY ROAD is continuing to draw moviegoers around the globe, now surpassing $300 million at the worldwide box office. The announcement was made by Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, and Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President of International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

Directed, written and produced by George Miller, the feature marks the filmmaker’s return to the post-apocalyptic landscape of his iconic Road Warrior, Max Rockatansky. Domestically, the movie has held firm at the box office since its opening, earning $125.1 million to date.

The widely praised film is also still pulling in big crowds overseas, so far taking in an estimated $177 million at the international box office for a worldwide total of more than $302 million and counting.

From director George Miller, originator of the post-apocalyptic genre and mastermind behind the legendary “Mad Max” franchise, comes MAD MAX: FURY ROAD a return to the world of the Road Warrior, Max Rockatansky.

Haunted by his turbulent past, Mad Max believes the best way to survive is to wander alone. Nevertheless, he becomes swept up with a group fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by Imperator Furiosa. They are escaping a Citadel tyrannized by the Immortan Joe, from whom something irreplaceable has been taken. Enraged, the Warlord marshals all his gangs and pursues the rebels ruthlessly in the high-octane Road War that follows.

Oscar-winning filmmaker George Miller (“Happy Feet”) directed the film from a screenplay he wrote with Brendan McCarthy and Nico Lathouris. Miller also produced the film, along with longtime producing partner, Oscar nominee Doug Mitchell (“Babe”, “Happy Feet”), and PJ Voeten. Iain Smith, Chris deFaria, Courtenay Valenti, Graham Burke, Bruce Berman and Steven Mnuchin served as executive producers.

Composer Tom Holkenborg Launching “Studio Time with Junkie XL” On May 26

Grammy nominated producer and composer Tom Holkenborg aka Junkie XL is launching a new YouTube tutorial series “Studio Time with Junkie XL.” The series will give aspiring composers, producers, and musicians a rare glimpse into the inner workings of a Hollywood composer.

The tutorial topics will range from technical advice, such as string and drum arrangements, to programming tips and advice on how to channel your musical influences. “Studio Time with Junkie XL” launches today (Tuesday, May 26) at youtube.com/junkiexlofficial.

In addition to music, teaching has always been one of Holkenborg’s passions. He was an associate professor at ARTEZ, the Dutch music conservatorium where he developed and taught a four year music program based on all of the elements of his career. His latest teaching endeavor is an online video series that will allow him to reach a broad audience directly from his home studio and share his knowledge of composing. “I’ve always been passionate about teaching and collaborating. The ‘Studio Time’ series is an extension of that. I created this series as a way for me to share what I’ve learned as a composer with aspiring musicians, whether they’re looking for technical knowledge or are in need of inspiration,” explains Holkenborg.

Holkenborg’s upcoming projects include Black Mass starring Johnny Depp, Point Break, and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. He is teaming with Oscar winning composer Hans Zimmer for Batman v. Superman. Holkenborg has collaborated with Zimmer on several projects including The Amazing Spiderman 2, Man of Steel, Madagascar 3, and one of the highest-grossing films of all-time, Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises.

Holkenborg’s artist career began in 1993 when he founded the industrial band NERVE, while producing hardcore and metal bands like Sepultura and Fear Factory. Drawn by electronic breakbeats he became Junkie XL in 1997 debuting with the album “Saturday Teenage Kick.” Holkenborg went on to produce five more albums under the moniker while headlining shows worldwide. In 2002 the producer/remixer scored a number 1 hit in 24 countries with his rework of Elvis Presley’s “A Little Less Conversation”. Following the success, Holkenborg collaborated with celebrated artists including Dave Gahan, Robert Smith, Chuck D, and remixed artists such as Coldplay, Depeche Mode, Britney Spears, and Justin Timberlake.
