F9 – Review

I’ve enjoyed most of the first eight FAST AND FURIOUS films. That made this ninth installment, F9, all the more disappointing. Granted, the whole premise of this handful of outside-the-law car nuts evolving from petty crooks and party animals to international espionage super studs, while still being societal outcasts, requires a hefty suspension of the ol’ disbelief. This chapter raises that particular ante beyond acceptable levels.

First of all, we learn how Dominic Toretto’s (Vin Diesel) father died. We also discover that he has a brother (John Cena) who’s never been mentioned in the first eight films, despite all of Dom’s blather about the “importance of family”, including significant roles in the early films for his sister (Jordana Brewster). Not only does Dom have a kid bro, but that lad’s grown up to be one of the heavies behind a ridiculous world-domination scheme in this unplanned reunion. There’s a sibling rivalry that simmered and sibl-ed in silence for a few decades.

As a result, the viewer must endure a swarm of flashbacks interrupting the present-day, globe-trotting crisis. Intriguingly (a word rarely finding relevance in this film), the actor playing Dom’s younger self is named Vinnie Bennett, and looks enough like Vin to have been the result of cloning. If not, he must have at least been named Vinnie due to parental prescience about their boy’s career destiny.

We also get a whole bunch of warm fuzzies as cast members from earlier installments, including one presumed to have been all blowed up a couple of movies ago, add more emotional moments (mainly shown by macho hugs) than one action film should contain. I assume the F&F series has fostered its analog to Trekkies, who will be as moved as the characters in those exchanges. Toretto must be an easier language to master than Klingon, especially since the word “family” serves as the key to the code, the way the commonality of the letter “e” works in English ciphers.

On the plus side, many of the sets are stunning, and the action sequences deliver the rush all adrenaline junkies in the house will expect. A couple of stunts are truly beyond belief, even for this sort of flick. Regarding the former, I was disappointed to see that outer space was not listed as a shooting location, since one of the most unlikely bits of business occurs in Earth’s orbit. That CGI portion is little more outlandish (inadvertent pun) than much of what occurs here on Terra Firma. As to the mayhem factor, one vehicular chase sequence may rank among the all-time leaders in duration,  number of destroyed cars, trucks and more. Godzilla usually inflicts less damage on Tokyo than what these folk do to Tbilisi, Georgia.

Sources indicate that this is the first F&F feature without Chris Morgan as a writer. That makes him look like a friggin’ genius in absentia. Way to go, Chris. Make ‘em miss ya.

As for your faithful correspondent, I spent 16 months at home reviewing from whatever screeners distributors offered by limited-access streaming. My first two returns to actual theaters were for clunkers – The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard and this. As supposedly stated in 1935 by Joe Jacobs – a disenchanted first time baseball stadium attendee –  “I shouldda stood in bed.”

Or to be more succinct – F9? F them.

F9 opens Friday, June 25, at various theaters and streaming.

FAST AND FURIOUS 6 -The Review

fastfurious_large

Chapter six in the venerable F&F series may not be the best or worst installment, but it’s definitely the loudest. FAST AND FURIOUS 6 is a crash’n’bash orgy of fast cars, exploding vehicles and crunching metal in an amazingly silly but undeniably entertaining serving of action-movie franchise fodder. It brings back all of the main characters from the preceding F&F films (except Lucas Black from F&F3: TOKYO DRIFT, the HALLOWEEN III of this series) and adds mixed martial arts champ Gina Carano (HAYWIRE) for some fun kicks-to-the-groin combat. The first F&F way back in 2001 was about humble street racers, and now this same lead-footed group is foiling Bond villains intent on world domination. F&F6 finds Dom (Vin Diesel), Brian (Paul Walker) and the rest of the crew, which includes Roman (Tyrese Gibson), Tej (Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges) and Gisele (Gal Gadot), retired from action with enough money to live comfortably after the Rio heist from F&F5. Things change, however, when bullheaded (and bullet-headed) DSS agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) offers them a deal: help him snare a criminal outfit of highly-skilled drivers and they’ll receive full pardons all round. Though initially unconvinced, Dom is persuaded when it turns out his presumed-dead girlfriend, Letty (Michelle Rodriguez), is still alive and working with the leader of the outfit, former special forces mercenary turned  felon Owen Shaw (Luke Evans) who fronts a sadistically efficient gang of hijackers out to steal enough military equipment to start WWIII.

Screenwriter Chris Morgan is less important to FAST AND FURIOUS 6 than the stunt coordinators, who’ve dreamt up several big laws-of-physics-be-damned action sequences, at least two of which are real barnburners.  One featuring a tank on a highway that destroys at least 100 other vehicles is reminiscent of the opening of the newest Die Hard chapter and features that frenetic, swish-pan style pioneered by Michael Bay. The other’s an extended chase sequence involving a massive cargo plane on the world’s longest runway, a rhapsody of mass destruction elevated by incredible stunt work and driving skills (and probably a whole lot of CGI).

Everything’s in a hurry with FAST AND FURIOUS 6 (even the occasional subtitle hurriedly scoots on and off the screen) and the many fans of this series will find it an adrenaline-pumping thrill ride. Despite wooden performances (with the exception of the always-magnetic Johnson), flat comic repartee, and about 30 more minutes than it needs, F&F6 will make truckloads of money no matter what the critics say. A post-credits sting even shows the villain in the next chapter (hint: a bald, big-name action star new to the series). The direction by Justin Lin (F&F4, 5, and 6) is a jumble. The digitally amplified clatter of crashing cars, guns, tanks, and fireballs never stops, but it’s impossible to know where you are at any given time or why you should care. But to his credit, Lin appears to have a heightened awareness of just how much time people are willing to spend watching a film that is proudly and unashamedly cinematic junk food. At no point is F&F6 dull, and for my money that’s all that matters. Fans of the F&F franchise know what they’re in for and this installment delivers, so park your brain in neutral and enjoy the ride.

FAST AND FURIOUS 5 Gearing Up

As if there was ever any question this was going to happen, Variety is reporting a fifth installment in the FAST AND THE FURIOUS franchise has officially gotten the green light.   The working title for the new film is FAST FIVE, and it will bring Paul Walker, Vin Diesel, producer Neal Moritz, and direcotr Justin Lin back together for one, more outing.

I’m not going to say one, “final” outing, because, if this film makes as much money as the last collaboration between these four, we’ll be sure to have FAST AND FURIOUS films hitting our local cinemas every other year until kingdom come.   2009’s FAST AND FURIOUS, which featured the return of Walker and Diesel to the franchise, made over $155 million in domestic box office, making it the most successful film in the franchise to date.   That was without the benefit of a July release, something the other three films in the franchise did have to their advantage.

Chris Morgan is returning, as well, to screenwriting duties, and early word on the film’s plot involves Walker’s Brian and Diesel’s Dominic once again on the run from the law.   I guess that falls into that “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” category, and this new film is sure to make a mint, as well, especially if Universal decides to aim for a Summer release.

Shooting is expected to begin later this year with release sometime in 2011.

Review: ‘Fast & Furious’

fast-and-furious-poster2Most big-time critics absolutely hate the Fast and the Furious movies. Why, you might ask? Well, the acting isn’t ever completely top notch, the story lines are unbelievable and the racing is just too unrealistic for them, but the wonderful thing about these movies is that to the real people, none of that matters. To preteens, teenagers and adults who have been fans for almost a decade, it doesn’t matter that the movies will never win an Oscar. What does matter is how fast and furious these films actually are, and as a fan from the beginning, I am telling you the newest addition is more than just fast and furious. It will be the most fun you have had in the movies in a long, long time.

After eight long years the original cast if finally back and ready to hit the streets to where these movies first kicked off. The first couple minutes of the movie will remind you of the first time you saw were introduced to the story. It gives you that, ‘this is going to be really good’ feeling, and from there things only go up, and rather quickly.

There is a major turn of events within the first few minutes that really sets up the story line and I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone. I will say that Brian O’Connor (Paul Walker) is still with the agency he was with from the beginning, and he meets up with Dom (Vin Diesel), and the two aren’t happy to see each other, as things ended on bad terms if you saw The Fast and Furious.

Michelle Rodriguez and Jordan Brewster are both back as well. Brewster has a larger part in Fast & Furious than she ever had in the first, and actually steals a few of the scenes. Other than that Vin Diesel really carries this movie like it is completely his own, which was totally fine with me. His character is tougher than ever, and when you see him on the screen you know something awesome is about to happen.

The movie was directed by Justin Lin who also directed Tokyo Drift, but fortunately the two have few in common and I have a feeling this one will be much more successful than his first. Another welcomed addition to the movie was the amount of humor that was used. It definitely isn’t a comedy by any means, but more than once the audience would crack up and break out in applause. I would definitely recommend going back and re-watching the series before checking this one out to understand the inside jokes.

As always the soundtrack was spot on as well. The fast cars and fast music combine to make an experience that is hard to forget, and this movie is no different from the others. Everything flows wonderfully.

While I may be being incredibly too lenient for this movie, I am simply a fan who left amazed and didn’t think one single thing was wrong with where this movie went. Critics who are looking for the movie of the century aren’t going to find it in Fast & Furious but that doesn’t mean these movies aren’t well done. If you are a fan or someone just looking for a good movie to see that will kill some time and leave you on the edge of your seat, definitely check this one out.

It’s rated PG-13 for language, some drug use, little sexual content and intense violence. While it may not be the best influence on kids who are learning to drive, I still recommend this movie for anyone from the ages of eleven and up. It’s about an hour and forty minutes. It opens on Friday, April 3, 2009 and is definitely guaranteed to satisfy. It’s fast, furious, fun and pure entertainment.

‘Fast & Furious’ Franchise may go for #Five?

dieselfastfurious

Nothing major here, but for fans of the franchise it’s been revealed during a Hollywood press junket that there may be a fifth installment in the ‘Fast & Furious’ string of movies. Here’s what Frosty at Collider.com picked up during the junket when actor Paul Walker was asked about the possibility:

“I’ve heard it in the rumor mill. I’ve spoken with executives at Universal at this point and they’re pretty serious about it. They’re developing it. They know where they want it to take place. They want to do it in Europe.†

I can’t honestly say I myself am thrilled… actually, I’m sort of apathetic to the whole thing. These movies, more or less, have been fine but not excellent, so a fifth wouldn’t really bother me either way. I will say, however, that the fourth installment looks interesting in the sense that it seems it may be different than it’s predecessors and possibly take the franchise down a new path.

German ‘Fast and Furious’ Poster

fast-and-furious-german

Apparently Germany, or, at least those who create the movie posters over there, has an aversion to a 1970 Dodge Charger. Â  That’s the only thing that didn’t make the transition between the American poster for ‘Fast & Furious’ to the German poster. Â  The floating, black-and-white heads are still there. Â  Sadly, the Charger has been replaced by a couple of pretty stock images of “fast” cars.

All in all, the German poster for ‘Fast and Furious’ is pretty mediocre. Â  There’s a whole lotta white space, and I guess I never noticed how cool the Charger looked in that original poster.

‘Fast and Furious’ comes out on April 3rd. Â  Germany declares war on Chrysler LLC on April 4th.

New ‘Fast and Furious’ Poster

fast-and-furious-poster2

And here we see the new poster for ‘Fast and Furious’. Â  Brought to us courtesy of Coming Soon.net, notice the posters uncanny resemblance to the first poster, only with added, floating, grey heads staring at you judgmentally. Â  Also notice the newly added PG-13 rating, so kids of all ages won’t have to buy a ticket for ‘Hannah Montana: The Movie’ and sneak in.

To be fair, I’m pretty excited for this film. Â  I love the first ‘The Fast and the Furious’, hated the second one, and never saw the third one. Â  Now, with both Diesel and Walker returning, I think it should be a pretty fun action flick.

What do you think? Â  Do you like the new poster? Â  Are you excited for the movie? Â  Does Vin Diesel’s stare make you as uncomfortable as it makes me? Â  Let us know by commenting below!

‘Fast and Furious’ comes out on April 3rd. Â  ‘Hannah Montana: The Movie’ comes out a week later.
