THE HUNTSMAN: WINTER’S WAR – Review

huntsman-winters-war-trailer-song-castle

A trio of A-list actresses – Charlize Theron, Emily Blunt, and Jessica Chastain – look great in Colleen Atwood’s costumes but are otherwise wasted in the joyless and bland THE HUNTSMAN: WINTER’S WAR. And while the trailer makes it look like a battle of badass beauties, two of these actresses (the ones who play the most interesting characters) are off-screen for most of the film’s running time. I did not see SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN but I hope it was better than this lame sequel/prequel.

THE HUNTSMAN: WINTER’S WAR opens with a prologue detailing the backstory of how evil queen Ravenna (Theron reprising her role) caused her sister Freya (Blunt) to join her wicked ways. Freya, who controls ice (just like Elsa in FROZEN!) had become pregnant by a betrothed man who she ends up killing after blaming him for the death of her child. She then becomes the ‘Ice Queen’ who establishes her kingdom by kidnapping kids and training them to be warriors she calls huntsmen. Chris Hemsworth’s Eric and Jessica Chastain’s Sara are introduced as abducted child soldiers kidnapped from their homes and forced to pillage the countryside as members of Freya’s army. Sara and Eric have fallen in love, something forbidden by Freya who literally separates the pair with one of her magic ice walls and leaves the lovers each thinking that the other is dead. The story then jumps ahead seven years (after the events of SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN) where Eric, now accompanied by two of Snow White’s dwarfs (Nick Frost and Rob Brydon – it’s unexplained what happened to the other five) is assigned with finding a magic mirror before Freya gets her hands on it. Sara joins him in this long middle section, which is basically an episodic, Hobbit-like woodland trek with a few CGI beasts along the way.

THE HUNTSMAN: WINTER’S WAR is very dark and very dull. Novice director Cedric Nicolas-Troyan designed the special effects for the previous Huntsman film, and his visuals here crib from that film – there’s not even a sense of originality in the fantasy world-building. His directorial inexperience shows with no sense of pacing as he’s unable to give THE HUNTSMAN: WINTER’S WAR a pulse. The movie just sits up there on screen, marching lazily through its paces without ever springing to life. Everything looks either sleek and shiny or foreboding and grimy, a Lord of the Rings-meets-Game of Thrones bedtime story with a confusing tone that will likely puzzle younger viewers accustomed to clearer motives for characters. The effects look expensive but they never look real, more like cartoons, or computer-game graphics, at odds with its live action. There are a few moments of visual magic in the details; a hissing snake with grass for skin and the shattering of an alabaster owl, but we mostly get lots of scenes with Freya conjuring up walls of ice while Ravenna lashes out with inky black tendrils like Spidey’s foe Venom.

Charlize Theron seems to be the only one onscreen having fun, camping and vamping like a pro, but after the opening sequence she vanishes for a solid 80 minutes and by the time she reappears, I’d lost interest. Emily Blunt underplays her role. I guess they didn’t want a scenery chewing contest between the sisters but while Blunt utters her dialogue with an air of heavy significance, she mostly just seems bored.  Hemsworth is given little to do in terms of challenging his range He can’t keep his hands off of Jessica Chastain, who looks good shooting arrows but is mostly wasted. The dwarfs are supposed to provide comic relief which may have worked had they been given anything funny to say or do (the dwarfettes don’t help). It’s worthwhile to see a big-budget blockbuster centered on women but there is no memorable dialogue in Evan Spiliotpoulos and Craig Mazin’s screenplay, just long stretches of tedium. With little entertainment value, thin characters, no momentum, and a dismal tone that will depress you and your kids, THE HUNTSMAN: WINTER’S WAR doesn’t work at all.

MAD MAX FURY ROAD – Midnights This Weekend at The Tivoli! What a Lovely Day!

MAD MAX FURY ROAD, the best movie of the 21st century so far, screens midnights this weekend (April 22nd and 23rd) at The Tivoli Theater as part of their ‘Reel Late at The Tivoli’ Midnight Series.

mad-max-immortan-joe-xlarge

Thirty years after writer/director George Miller led us all to believe his Mad Max franchise had run out of gas with MAD MAX BEYOND THUNDERDOME, he resurrected the Road Warrior with a larger budget, a bigger crew, and more vehicles to destroy. Well worth the wait, MAD MAX FURY ROAD, released last May, was pure dynamite, with enough wit and ingenuity to put all recent action films to shame. It richly deserved the six Oscars that it won and should have won the other four it was nominated for (especially Best Picture – SPOTLIGHT?!?!?!…..puh…leeeez!)

madmax3

Not a sequel nor prequel nor reboot, MAD MAX FURY ROAD is simply another installment in the post-apocalyptic chronicles of Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy replacing “Mad Mel” Gibson). He’s introduced as a man haunted by flashbacks of past barbarity, mostly involving a young child he failed to protect. He’s seized by a band of pale-faced desert outlaws known as War Boys, and taken to The Citadel, a settlement where his uninfected blood will be gathered. The War Boys do the bidding of their masked ruler, Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne – who played Toecutter in the original MAD MAX 36 years ago – not that anyone would recognize him but it’s a cool touch). Max seems doomed until he meets Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron), a hard-bitten, one-armed driver who has organized an escape for herself and Joe’s five wives (I guess he’s Mormon). Wanting his spouses  (including Riley Keough, Zoë Kravitz, and a pregnant Rosie Huntington-Whiteley) back, Joe and his band of deranged toadies give chase. Max helps Furiosa in the road rage scrimmage against these degenerates as they sprint their way across the desolate Wasteland to the safe oasis known as Green Place.

FRD-09299.JPG

MAD MAX FURY ROAD was the movie every action had been waiting for since THE ROAD WARRIOR and no one was disappointed. Director Miller staged his film as one long, gonzo action set piece, mostly involving custom vehicles of death barreling down deserted post-apocalyptic highways at breakneck speeds. Miller’s adherence to practical effects made CGI-neutered noise like FURIOUS 7 look removed and low-rent. Some of MAD MAX FURY ROAD – the sand storm and Curiosa’s left arm – were CG-enhanced but when you see out-there vehicular carnage and stunts on an epic scale – motorcycles flying over huge trucks in order to drop fire bombs on top while actors balance precariously between vehicles – there’s a palpable sense of danger because you knew that’s for real. The action had none of the confused visual sense so prevalent in movies like FURIOUS 7 and the Transformers franchise that use ridiculous fast editing that makes keeping track of who is where or doing what during a fast-cut sequence nearly impossible.

madmax1

In keeping with Gibson’s precedent, Hardy’s Max doesn’t talk much. He looks ragged and disheveled, his leather jacket dusty and cracked, his face covered at first with a Bane-like mask. Hardy did as good a job as anyone could, but my one complaint about MAD MAX FURY ROAD was that I miss Gibson. Mel was 59 when the film was made, hardly too old to repeat this role (Harrison Ford was still playing Indy at 66), and his familiar, haunted Max would have made this already-amazing film the greatest movie ever made! (and would have turned around his self-imposed career slump). But Charlize Theron’s Furiosa was really the film’s true center. The actress was terrific and gets as much screen time as Hardy, maybe more, and its Furiosa’s quest that is the driving force of the story. The R rating doesn’t quite seem justified. MAD MAX FURY ROAD was violent and intense but seems to be cut around the really gruesome stuff, as if they were shooting for a PG-13. But that’s not something you even notice as Miller brilliantly sustains the edge-of-your-seat 120-minute chase with crisp editing, sharp photography by John Seale, and a pounding music score by Junkie XL. Nothing is spared in MAD MAX FURY ROAD and the sheer inventiveness of it demands repeat viewings, so buckle up, spray-paint your mouth silver, and enjoy the ride when it returns to the big screen this weekend midnights over at The Tivoli (6350 Delmar Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63130) at midnight!?!

With Freya’s ability to freeze any enemy, the young ice queen has spent decades in a remote wintry palace raising a legion of deadly huntsmen—including Eric (Hemsworth) and warrior Sara (Chastain)—only to find that her prized two defied her one demand: Forever harden your hearts to love.

When Freya learns of her sister’s demise, she summons her remaining soldiers to bring the Magic Mirror home to the only sorceress left who can harness its power. But once she discovers Ravenna can be resurrected from its golden depths, the wicked sisters threaten this enchanted land with twice the darkest force it’s ever seen. Now, their amassing army shall prove undefeatable…unless the banished huntsmen who broke their queen’s cardinal rule can fight their way back to one another.

Chloë Grace Moretz, Jenny Slate and Thomas Mann to Star in Charlize Theron Produced BRAIN ON FIRE

Chloe-Moretz-

Broad Green Pictures announced today a partnership with Denver & Delilah and Foundation Features to produce and finance BRAIN ON FIRE, a film based on Susannah Cahalan’s critically acclaimed memoir Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness, which was first published in 2012 and quickly became a New York Times bestseller.

The film will be directed by Gerard Barrett (Glassland, Pilgrim Hill). Charlize Theron, A.J. Dix and Beth Kono of Denver & Delilah, and Rob Merilees and Lindsay Macadam of Foundation Features are producing.

The film will star Chloë Grace Moretz (If I Stay, Kick-Ass), Jenny Slate (Obvious Child) and Thomas Mann (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, Project X). Principal photography will begin July 13 in Vancouver and the film is set for release in 2016.

BRAIN ON FIRE follows Cahalan (Moretz), a rising journalist at the New York Post who mysteriously starts having seizures and hearing voices. As weeks go by and Susannah rapidly descends into insanity, she moves inexplicably from violence to catatonia. Following a series of outbursts, misdiagnoses and a prolonged hospital stay, a lucky last-minute intervention by one doctor finally gives her a diagnosis and hope to rebuild her life.

Broad Green Pictures will distribute Brain on Fire in the United States, while the studio’s partner, Mister Smith Entertainment will continue to sell international rights after launching the film at the European Film Market in February. This collaboration marks the second time Broad Green Pictures and Mister Smith Entertainment have united since the two companies announced that Broad Green bought a 45% stake in the international licensing and distribution company. Previously, the two announced a partnership to bring Buena Vista Social Club – Adios, the sequel to the Oscar-nominated Buena Vista Social Club to theatres.

“We are excited to work with this incredible group of filmmakers and actors to bring Susannah Cahalan’s life story to the big screen,” said Broad Green Pictures’ Chief Creative Officer Daniel Hammond. “With the help of our partners at Mister Smith, we will be able to share this incredibly moving film with a global audience.”

“I’m thrilled and excited to be in business with such a creative and filmmaker-driven studio like Broad Green,” says Barrett. “We have an incredible true story to tell, a story that has touched millions of people, and I could not be happier, than to be partnering with the talent at Broad Green to bring it to the world.”

The deal was brokered on behalf of the filmmakers by WME Global, while Victor Moyers, President of Production, and Chris Tricarico, EVP Legal & Business Affairs, General Counsel handled for Broad Green Pictures.
