Emma Stone and Steve Carell In First Trailer For Tennis Drama BATTLE OF THE SEXES

With The French Open and Wimbledon right around the corner, the Grand slam matches are on the minds of every tennis fan.

Today, Fox Searchlight Pictures has released this first trailer for the upcoming film BATTLE OF THE SEXES.

The electrifying 1973 tennis match between World number one Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and ex-champ and serial hustler Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell) was billed as THE BATTLE OF THE SEXES and became one of the most watched televised sports events of all time. The match caught the zeitgeist and sparked a global conversation on gender equality, spurring on the feminist movement.

Trapped in the media glare, King and Riggs were on opposite sides of a binary argument, but off-court each was fighting more personal and complex battles. With a supportive husband urging her to fight the Establishment for equal pay, the fiercely private King was also struggling to come to terms with her own sexuality, while Riggs gambled his legacy and reputation in a bid to relive the glories of his past.

Together, Billie and Bobby served up a cultural spectacle that resonated far beyond the tennis courts and animated the discussions between men and women in bedrooms and boardrooms around the world.

The huge cast features Andrea Riseborough, Sarah Silverman, Bill Pullman, Alan Cumming, Austin Stowell, Jessica Mcnamee, Natalie Morales, Fred Armisen, Martha MacIsaac, Mickey Sumner, Bridey Elliott, Eric Christian Olsen, Wallace Langham, Matt Malloy and Elisabeth Shue.

Directed by Valerie Faris & Jonathan Dayton (LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE) and produced by Danny Boyle, BATTLE OF THE SEXES opens in theaters at the start of awards season on September 22, 2017.

STRANGE MAGIC Original Motion Picture Soundtrack On Digital Today, Available on CD Feb. 17

Strange_Magic_Digital_Hi

“Strange Magic,” a new animated film from Lucasfilm Ltd., is a fairy tale—but not your average fairy tale. It’s a madcap musical with a princess who has sworn off love, a vulnerable villain, a slightly nutty Sugar Plum Fairy, a tenacious and big-hearted elf, a mischievous imp, and a knight who is no Prince Charming.

With Marius DeVries serving as musical director and soundtrack producer, the Strange Magic digital soundtrack from Buena Vista Records is now available at digital retail.

The physical CD will be available on Feb. 17. “Strange Magic” from Touchstone Pictures will be in theaters on Jan. 23, 2015.

“Strange Magic” welcomes an extraordinary roster of voice talent, including Alan Cumming (CBS’ “The Good Wife,” Broadway’s “Cabaret”) as Bog King, Evan Rachel Wood (“The Ides of March“) as feisty fairy Marianne, Elijah Kelley (“Hairspray,” “Lee Daniels’The Butler”) as lovelorn elf Sunny, newcomer Meredith Anne Bull as Marianne’s lovesick sister Dawn, Sam Palladio (ABC’s “Nashville“) as heartbreaker Roland, Kristin Chenoweth (Broadway’s “Wicked”) as the potion-making Sugar Plum Fairy, Maya Rudolph (“Big Hero 6,” “Bridesmaids”) as Bog’s mum Griselda, Alfred Molina (“Chocolat”) as the Fairy King, and Bob Einstein (HBO’s “Curb Your Enthusiasm”) and Peter Stormare (“Fargo“) as Stuff and Thang, Bog’s loyal goblin assistants.

“I wanted to do something fun and happy yet unexpected,” says executive producer George Lucas. “It’s a story about love and how the most unlikely people fall in love. It’s about finding true beauty in someone’s soul regardless of how they look.”

Music producer Marius de Vries (“Moulin Rouge”) serves as both the musical director and composer, and chose the songs in collaboration with music supervisor Steven Gizicki, weaving together new versions of favorite songs from the last six decades—including songs made famous by artists ranging from Mickey & Sylvia and Elvis Presley to Kelly Clarkson, Beyoncé and Lady Gaga. De Vries says he took Lucas’ lead when it came to the stylistic anchors of the film’s music. “Each of the kingdoms’ tribes is colored by a specific genre of pop music drawn from a very eclectic and diverse range of periods and styles, and woven into a narrative tapestry that still manages to feel coherent and emotionally logical.”

Director Gary Rydstrom says ‘American Graffiti’ was one of the inspirations for the movie. “But for ‘Strange Magic,’ we took the idea a step further,” he says. “Every song helped tell the story, but because the songs come with such history, they evoke emotional tugs on your heart strings.”

Adds Lucas, “I love telling stories with music. ‘Strange Magic’ may take a different approach than we did with ‘American Graffiti,’ but I had just as much fun. I love all kinds of music from classical to ethnic to contemporary. Since childhood, music has been an important part of my life.

“I chose Marius [de Vries] as the musical director because I loved what he did with ‘Moulin Rouge,'” Lucas continues. “And I’ve turned to Gary [Rydstrom] for many years for his talent in sound design. I’ve always thought that sound and music were just as important as the visuals in a film. It was an extraordinary experience to work with such a dynamic duo on such an intricate collection of songs and the complementary score.”

The track list follows:

1. “Can’t Help Falling in Love”
Performed by Evan Rachel Wood and Sam Palladio
2. “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again”

3. “Three Little Birds”

MALADIES – The Review

DSC_9021

Perhaps Natasha Leggero said it best on Comedy Central’s Roast, when attempting to explain James Franco’s choice in artistic endeavors…

First I was wondering why James Franco would do this roast, and then I saw Spring Breakers and I was like, “Oh! He’ll do anything!”

Being fully aware I was choosing to watch a film starring James Franco, I was entirely unprepared for what I was getting into, which is a conundrum commonly associated with watching anything starring James Franco.

MALADIES is written and directed by multimedia artist Carter. This is Carter’s first feature-length film. Combining the quirkiness of Spike Jonze — but more mellow — and complex philosophical musings like those of Charlie Kaufman — but less dizzying — MALADIES manages first to catch me off guard, then just as my interest slowly begins to dwindle I am captured in a random moment of realization that I am enjoying the film.

James Franco plays, well… himself. Not officially, but the film eludes to the presumption. James is an actor, retired early. Either by choice, or not. This detail remains up in the air the entire film. Now, James is a writer. He is writing a book. No, James is struggling, somewhat, to write his book. After a short, yet successful career as a Soap Opera star, James put away his thespian masks due to a perceived mental illness. Stricken with memory loss, confusion and spells of dizziness, James now resides in a small town along with his adorably deranged sister Patricia, played by Fallon Goodson, and his best friend Catherine, played by Catherine Keener. Together, we witness their lives and how each of their respective character flaws, or maladies, play out in each others’ company.

MALADIES begins with a long, slow opening sequence depicting two men in alternating shots, quietly walking or sitting in reflection. Meanwhile, we hear narration from a calm, familiar-sounding voice waxing poetically about our central character, James. Not until the narrator begins to verbally interact with James, do we truly realize something is different about this film. This is just one of the various unorthodox methods Carter uses to set his film apart from the crowd. At times, James himself even takes to narrating his own thought process.

The charm of MALADIES comes to fruition only through James’ interaction with his sister, his best friend, and another older man named Delmar, played by David Strathairn. Despite his obvious symptoms, James is perhaps the most grounded and stable of these four characters. Patricia is sweet, but absent-minded and completely at a loss for living within reality as we know it, while Catherine is a self-absorbed, often unlikable artist. Catherine does not particularly like Patricia, while Patricia really wouldn’t know it if it were painted in bright red 10-foot tall  letters everywhere she looked. Delmar, on the other hand, is a very likable, albeit curiously eccentric character. Strathairn seems to conjure up a strong presence of Jimmy Stewart for his performance, but it works well. Together, these three do their best, in their own ways, to take care of James in his currently fractured state of mind.

MALADIES moves at a comfortably slow pace, establishing some depth to the characters. There is a spontaneity to the script that stands out, awkwardly tossing curve balls into the story to keep the viewer on their toes while inducing the occasional double-take. Wait, did he just say that? Or, those moments where you think you know what will happen, but then something completely different occurs. You go along at first as if you were right, then realize you were totally not right. MALADIES definitely maintains a slight hint of improvisation, but never so much that it feels winged or incoherent.

Meandering. This is a word that describes MALADIES. Seemingly shuffling along an uncertain path of aimless neurotic exposition, only to suddenly stumble upon a smile. This is how I experienced watching the film. This is not a happy film, but it will warm your heart and inspire some laughter. This is not a sad film, but there are reasons you will feel concern or empathy for the characters. Carter proves he has a cinematic vision worthy of an audience. Carter has not created a perfect film, by any sense of the word, but he has succeeded in making me think and allowing me to laugh. On any good day, this is a winning cinematic concoction.

Overall Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

New MALADIES Trailer Stars James Franco, Catherine Keener and David Strathairn

MALADIES_ONESHEET__1_

Check out the brand new trailer for MALADIES starring James Franco, Catherine Keener, Fallon Goodson, David Strathairn and Alan Cumming.

Directed by Carter, the movie screened at the Berlin International Film Festival and SXSW in 2013.

A daring new film from internationally acclaimed multimedia artist Carter, MALADIES charts the struggles of an unstable former soap opera star (James Franco) in 1960’s New York as he tries to restart his floundering creative career.

Hoping to find clarity and new purpose as a writer, he holes up with his eccentric sister (Fallon Goodson) at the seaside home of their best friend (Catherine Keener). But as he disappears further into his own mind, reality begins to slip through his grasp.

MALADIES

Featuring an award-winning ensemble, including David Strathairn and Alan Cumming, MALADIES is a heartfelt but defiantly unconventional exploration of the creative mind.

The film opens in select theaters on March 21, followed by a VOD and digital platforms release on March 25 from Tribeca Film.

Tribeca 2012 Review: ANY DAY NOW

ANY DAY NOW may have a story that seems fitting for a Movie of the Week but that doesn’t change the fact that it is a incredibly well crafted film full of surprisingly powerful performances. Paul (Garret Dillahunt) is a closeted District Attorney and Rudy (Alan Cumming) is an aspiring singer currently working as lead in a drag performance at a gay bar. When Rudy’s negligent junkie neighbor ends up in jail, he looks after her son Marco (Isaac Leyva), a teenager with Down syndrome. Family Services places Marco in a foster home but Rudy soon finds him wandering the streets and takes him in once again. With temporary custody approved by Marco’s mother, Rudy and Paul begin raising him as their own. But when it is discovered Rudy and Paul are not cousins but a gay couple, they face a harsh legal battle to keep Marco in the safe and loving family environment they created for him.

Garret Dillahunt is probably best known for continuing the long-standing tradition of hilarious TV dads on Fox’s RAISING HOPE. I do not watch the show nearly as often as I’d like but he is consistently funny whenever I do. I haven’t noticed him in much else so it was a very pleasant surprise to see that just like Bryan Cranston (another former scene-stealing TV dad), Dillahunt is just as gifted a dramatic actor as he is comedic. He has a strong presence in the film and some truly great chemistry with the equally talented Alan Cumming. This may be Cumming’s best performance to date or at least his most powerful. Newcomer Isaac Leyva is truly captivating as Marco, almost immediately forming a deep connection with the viewer.

Travis Fine also deserves much praise for his expert handling of this story. Not only does he prove himself a very capable director but his writing is sharp and full of emotion. Credit for the script also belongs to George Arthur Bloom who originally wrote it over 40 years ago, which was the basis for Fine’s rewrite. It can be extremely difficult to find the right balance of humor for a film like this but the light touches throughout feel completely natural and welcomed. The only time I was a little caught off guard was the introduction of Don Franklin as a quite comical lawyer who shows up in the third act. At first he seemed to walk in from a different movie but he actually adds a lot of necessary levity that eases us into the finale.

The film takes place in the 70s but its underlying themes are just as relevant today. Full of fantastic performances, this is certainly a film that will have some buzz around it come Awards season. As someone who tends to avoid movies that require a box of Kleenex with ticket purchase, I cannot recommend this movie enough. Go see it, even if you are a cold heartless bastard.
