She was versatile, tough, and often hilarious. She played waitresses, torch singers, and even a drill sergeant in her Oscar-nominated turn in PRIVATE BENJAMIN in 1980, a role she continued in the subsequent TV series which garnered her an Emmy and a Golden Globe. I last remember seeing her as the crazy cat lady in JEEPERS CREEPERS in 2001. Eileen Brennan had bladder cancer and died today at age 80.

From The Chicago Tribune:

Actress Eileen Brennan, best known for her supporting role as tough-talking drill captain Doreen Lewis in the Goldie Hawn comedy “Private Benjamin,” died on Sunday. She was 80.
Brennan died in a Burbank hospice after a battle with bladder cancer, her management company, Unified Management, told TheWrap. Also well known for 1971’s “The Last Picture Show,” Brennan’s performance in “Private Benjamin” earned her an Oscar nomination in 1981, and she continued to portray her Army captain character for three seasons on CBS’ television adaptation of the comedy. Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Martin Freeman & Edgar Wright discuss glory days, fight training and the “Pink Hulk” in a new featurette from Focus Features’ THE WORLD’S END – opening in theatres on Friday, August 23rd.

Director Edgar Wright and actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost reunite for a third film following the successes “Shaun of the Dead” (2004) and “Hot Fuzz” (2007).

In “The World’s End,” 20 years after attempting an epic pub crawl, five childhood friends reunite when one of them becomes hellbent on trying the drinking marathon again. SPICE WORLD This Weekend at Midnight – Reel Late at the Tivoli

spiceworld-560

“I told them before: if they wanted to be spontaneous they had to clear it with me first”

SPICE WORLD. I’ve never seen it. When I announced the title when I introduced the midnight show at the Tivoli a few weeks, I didn’t even know what it was. Apparently it’s a movie starring the Spice Girls (the British pop girl group formed in 1994) that was made in 1997 and has somehow managed to stay under my radar for the past 15 years. But when I declared that title it was met with cheers by the 18-25-year old audience that is the mainstay of the Reel Late at the Tivoli midnight series I host, so I guess, like MEAN GIRLS, which played at midnight there to a healthy crowd a couple of weeks ago, SPICE WORLD is a cult movie for the current young generation. That’s fine with me, and this SPICE WORLD virgin is looking forward to seeing it for the first time when it plays this Friday and Saturday nights (August 2nd and 3rd) at Midnight as part of The Tivoli’s Reel Late at the Tivoli Midnight series.

The Tivoli is located at 6350 Delmar Blvd. on ‘The Loop’ in University City, MO.

spiceworld2

Bob Spiers (director of British TV’s Absolutely Fabulous) directed SPICE WORLD, the feature-film debut of the five Spice Girls — Posh Spice, Sporty Spice, Scary Spice, Ginger Spice, and Baby Spice — as the quintet challenged the London pop scene during five days before their first live performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Photojournalists follow as they travel from press conferences to practice sessions to photo ops, passing London landmarks in the comfort of their cavernous Spicebus and emerging in a musical cascade of color, trendy clothes, and blinding flashbulbs. Shot in 43 days, the film featured cameos by everyone from Elton John and Elvis Costello, to Stephen Fry and Bob Hoskins.

SpiceWorld-Still1

SPICE WORLD was poorly reviewed when it was released in 1997.Roger Ebert claimed: “The Spice Girls are easier to tell apart than the Mutant Ninja Turtles, but that is small consolation: What can you say about five women whose principal distinguishing characteristic is that they have different names? They occupy “Spice World” as if they were watching it: They’re so detached they can’t even successfully lip-synch their own songs.” But poor reviews are often the genesis of a cult film and some movies are just plain old critic proof. Apparently a lot of very young girls saw SPICE WORLD when it was new and hold for it a special place in their hearts. These girls are now young women who will no doubt make up much of the audience this weekend at the Tivoli.

If it’s good enough for them, it’s good enough for me dammit, and I look forward to my first exposure to SPICE WORLD.

Walt Disney Studios And Harvey Weinstein Developing ARTEMIS FOWL Movie

Artemis_Fowl_first_edition_coverArtemisfowl2

The Walt Disney Studios is pleased to announce that it is in development on the film adaptation of Artemis Fowl with producer Harvey Weinstein. The live-action feature will be based on the first and second installments in Disney Publishing Worldwide’s best-selling children’s fiction series by author Eoin Colfer. The screenplay is being written by Michael Goldenberg (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix).

Robert DeNiro and Jane Rosenthal will executive produce the project.

“With its balance of mystery, adventure and family appeal, Artemis Fowl is a natural fit for Disney,” said Sean Bailey, president, Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production. “We’re looking forward to collaborating with Harvey on this exciting project.”

“Harvey is one of the preeminent producers in the industry, with impeccable taste and creative instincts,” added Alan Horn, chairman, The Walt Disney Studios. “I had a wonderful time working with Harvey during my tenure at Warner Bros., and I’m very happy to continue that relationship here at Disney.”

“If you would have told me five years ago I would be producing a project with Disney I would have thought you were crazy,” said Harvey Weinstein, Co-Chairman of The Weinstein Company. “I feel as though everything is coming full circle considering Bob DeNiro and Jane Rosenthal brought me this book while I was still at Miramax and within hours I told them I wanted the rights to the film. I am thrilled to be reunited with Alan Horn who I worked with while he was at Warner Bros. and we had tremendous success with The Aviator, Starsky and Hutch andTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It is also exciting to partner with friends Alan Bergman, Sean Bailey and of course Bob Iger who has been incredibly generous to me over the years. This is a special project for me because my children absolutely love this book. This story is for everyone and there is no one better than Disney to make a film that will excite people young and old.”

Artemis Fowl is about a 12-year-old Artemis who is a millionaire, a genius – and above all, a criminal mastermind. But Artemis doesn’t know what he’s taken on when he kidnaps a fairy (Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon Unit) to harness her magic to save his family. These aren’t the fairies of the bedtime stories  – they’re dangerous.

The Artemis Fowl book series currently has more than 21 million copies in print in 44 languages worldwide

From New Line Cinema comes the action comedy WE’RE THE MILLERS, starring Jennifer Aniston (“Horrible Bosses”) and Jason Sudeikis (“The Campaign”). The film is directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber (“Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story”).

David Clark (Sudeikis) is a small-time pot dealer whose clientele includes chefs and soccer moms, but no kids – after all, he has his scruples. So what could go wrong? Plenty. Preferring to keep a low profile for obvious reasons, he learns the hard way that no good deed goes unpunished when he tries to help out some local teens and winds up getting jumped by a trio of gutter punks. Stealing his stash and his cash, they leave him in major debt to his supplier, Brad (Ed Helms).

In order to wipe the slate clean – and maintain a clean bill of health – David must now become a big-time drug smuggler by bringing Brad’s latest shipment in from Mexico. Twisting the arms of his neighbors, cynical stripper Rose (Aniston) and wannabe customer Kenny (Will Poulter), and the tatted-and-pierced streetwise teen Casey (Emma Roberts), he devises a foolproof plan. One fake wife, two pretend kids and a huge, shiny RV later, the “Millers” are headed south of the border for a Fourth of July weekend that is sure to end with a bang.
