Documentary About Improv Guru Del Close – FOR MADMEN ONLY Available Now on Apple TV and Altavod

Utopia is pleased to announce that FOR MADMEN ONLY, a feature documentary that places improv guru Del Close front and center, is set for release on Altavod & Apple TV in the USA and Canada on July 27th, 2021. Here’s the trailer:

Synopsis: Comedy guru Del Close, mentor to everyone from Bill Murray to Tina Fey, sets out to write his autobiography for DC Comics. As he leads us through sewers, mental wards, and his peculiar talent for making everyone famous but himself, Close emerges as a personification of the creative impulse itself. He’s a muse with BO and dirty needles, offering transcendence despite (or because of) the trail of wreckage behind him.

In this at once hilarious and poignant look at the life of the godfather of improv comedy, Del Close, Festival alum Heather Ross (Girls on The Wall)  tracks the trailblazer from “human torch” sideshow act to his influential and contentious rise at The Second City, mentoring such greats as Bill Murray, John Candy, and Tina Fey, among many others. Inspired by his semi-autobiographical DC Comics anthology Wasteland, the film delves into the inner workings of Close’s wacky mind through inspired reenactments, archival clips, and interviews with such devotees as Bob Odenkirk, Tim Meadows, and Adam McKay. The result is a lively, multi-layered picture of a man and his mission, riding on the edges of genius and despair, creativity, and insanity.

Heather Ross said of her second feature documentary, “We knew that to make the definitive movie about this icon/unknown, we would need to take the same kind of creative risks that he was famous for.  As someone known for breaking down genres and experimenting with form—not to mention playing fast and loose with the truth – we decided to apply the same ideas to our film and try to break new ground with the documentary genre. This resulted in constructing a set of scenes imagining the creative process behind WASTELAND, Del’s comic book autobiography.”

Danielle DiGiacomo, Head of Content for Utopia, said, “For Madmen Only is a singular film reflecting a singular man – a creative and joyful exploration of one of the lesser sung heroes in all of comedy; we at Utopia can’t wait for viewers to be taken on a much needed escape into hilarity and genius.”

FOR MADMEN ONLY premieres on Altavod & Apple TV on July 27th, 2021, with special events and screenings to be announced. Pre-Order the film HERE

Watch The First Trailer For Alexander Payne’s DOWNSIZING

Matt Damon, Christoph Waltz, Jason Sudeikis, Hong Chau and Kristen Wiig star in the brand new trailer for director Alexander Payne’s DOWNSIZING.

DOWNSIZING imagines what might happen if, as a solution to over-population, Norwegian scientists discover how to shrink humans to five inches tall and propose a 200-year global transition from big to small. People soon realize how much further money goes in a miniaturized world, and with the promise of a better life, everyman Paul Safranek (Matt Damon) and wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig) decide to abandon their stressed lives in Omaha in order to get small and move to a new downsized community — a choice that triggers life-changing adventures.

Damon and Wiig previously starred in 2015 in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi hit THE MARTIAN.

From Paramount Pictures, DOWNSIZING will open in theaters December 22.

COLOSSAL – Review

colossal_01_web

Review by Stephen Tronicek

COLOSSAL is funny, terrifying and meaningful and unlike many high concept films, it actually earns all of those through more than superficial comedic lines and intense action on screen. It is a film about people, and about how people can use their own problems to warp them into monsters. It’s also a monster movie, and kind of a comedy and if that sounds like a lot for a movie to deal with, you’d be right. Does that stop Colossal from being something of a minor miracle? No.

Gloria (Anne Hathaway) is a wreck. She has been kicked out by her boyfriend, she’s back at home, she’s dealing with alcoholism and trying to befriend old hometown friends like Oscar (Jason Sudeikis). She just needs to get her life together. Sounds easy…until Gloria realizes that every single time she steps into a playground she manifests as a giant monster in Seoul, South Korea, that copies her every move.

There’s a whole lot going on tonally in Colossal, but its secret weapon is its use of genre mirrors the way that the characters progress and grow. The start of the film plays like something of an insufferable hipster comedy, with Gloria throwing out meaningless references to Wes Anderson, and trying overall find meaning in her life at the bottom of a Pabst Blue Ribbon. It is insufferable but it’s also necessary because this part of the movie is best described as a facade. At the start of the film, it might be in the characters interest to hide their true feelings behind the guise of a goofy facade, but by the end that just isn’t the case. Not spoiling anything, COLOSSAL gets genuinely scary before it ever gets truly funny, and the way that writer/director Nacho Vigalondo balances these tones, by juxtaposing each with the character development, takes COLOSSAL from just high concept creativity to something approaching a scathing takedown of self-pitying people using their problems as an excuse to do horrible things.

The incorporation of the theme into the plot progression easily irons out most of the tonal inconsistencies, though the film does sometimes misstep along the way. This could be kind of expected because of just how many different tones are being accessed throughout the film, but when it does misstep, the audience feels it as the tonal dissonance crashes down.

Thankfully, that only happens when the story takes bigger shifts, which eventually due to the aforementioned pairing of plot and character, are each justified by the end of the film. By the end of this crazy ride, there’s no doubt that what you’ll see is special. COLOSSAL  is a colossal entertainment.

MASTERMINDS (2016) – Review

masterminds

Hey, there’s another movie out this weekend that’s “based on a true story”, but as the Monty Pythons would say, “And now for something completely different”. It’s not a gripping disaster like DEEPWATER HORIZON (although its release problems were a disaster), but a “caper farce”. This flick concerns a real life heist like THE BRINK’S JOB, but committed by THE GANG THAT COULDN’T SHOOT STRAIGHT. This crew gets by on sheer, bumbling stupidity because nobody would ever seriously refer to them as MASTERMINDS.

The first mastermind we meet is Loomis Fargo money transport armored truck driver David Ghatt (Zach Galifiankis) circa 1997. Via voiceover he explains that he leads a dull life, that he’d even welcome a hold-up, despite the fact that he’ll soon tie the knot with his off-kilter fiance’ Jandice (Kate McKinnon). His world is soon rocked by the hiring of his new work partner, blonde bombshell Kelly Campbell (Kristen Wiig). David enjoys her company, even harboring a crush on her. Unfortunately Kelly is fired by LF and David’s boredom returns. Kelly begins hanging out with the “wrong crowd of loose morals” over at Steve’s (Owen Wilson) “high-rise” double-wide trailer. An afternoon TV news report inspires Steve to rob Kelly’s old employers, and David ‘s the perfect patsy. Kelly meets David at the diner, and while Steve and his posse listen at the next booth, she professes her feelings for David and desire to run away with him to Mexico. The plan: David will fill a van full of money, meet up with her and Steve (only known as “Geppetto” to him), David will be given a small bit of cash, then he’ll fly off to Mexico, and Kelly will soon join him with a bigger share of the score (a cool 17 mil!). After the job, David holes up in a posh south-of-the-border hotel and pleads via phone to Kelly, urging her to hurry down. But she stays put, and Steve alerts the police to his whereabouts. When they fail to capture David, he learns of Steve’s identity and threatens to turn him in. This prompts Steve to hire hitman Mike (Jason Sudeikis), while two FBI agents (Leslie Jones and Jon Daly) grill Kelly back in the states. Just how long will David’s really, really dumb luck last?

Galifianakis, his full thick beard framed by a wig inspired by any number of late 70’s TV starlets, commits to this clueless, southern-fried aggressively dim character (closer to THE CAMPAIGN than THE HANGOVER flicks). Though few of the gags work (many land with a thud), he truly gives all of his nearly endless energy. Wiig is a bit brighter, as the reluctant crime noir “femme fatale”, showing us that Kelly likes David just not “in that way”, until she’s won over by his puppy-like loyalty. On the flip side, McKinnon as the jilted Jandice (jaundice?) puts out a delightfully creepy vibe with her frozen smile (effective when she poses for stilted engagement pix) and breathy line delivery. The real mastermind may be Wilson as the planner (“I’m the puppeteer…I pull the strings”) who appears to be in pain as he tries to squeeze a new strategy out of his thick skull. But he is a tad smarter than his cronies, which leads to several scenes of frustration at David’s antics. Sudeikis, in his pencil-thin mustache and slicked-back hair, does a riff on 70’s era Burt Reynolds-style wise guy, macho action studs. That is, until a plot twist switched on his tender, caring side. Jones generates some laughs as the aggravated, high-strung fed, who can’t fathom how these buffoons get away with all that moolah, her performance echoing much of her SNL work.

Speaking of that TV institution, its mastermind, Lorne Michaels, is one of this film’s producers. This may account, not only for the many SNL vets here, but for its loose, “let’s see where it goes” improv vibe, along with the TV writing trio. But the real guiding force is director Jared Hess, best known for the cult hit NAPOLEAN DYNAMITE, whose movie track record since has been spotty at best (last year’s DON VERDEAN bounced right from theatres to VOD in a matter of days). This new effort won’t add any luster despite the impressive ensemble. Giving characters funny fashions and facial hair doesn’t distract from the clunky, dull script and predictable situations. After a brisk first half-hour or so, the film settles into a sloppy, start-and-stop pacing, not helped by several easy “gross-out” gags ( a swimming pool “accident”? CADDYSHACK did it better 36 years ago), and a slapstick street chase that never delivers the laughs or thrills. It just seems to be a classic example of “the script needs some work, but the cast can come up with something on set. As talented as they are, and my gosh nearly all of the new GHOSTBUSTERS are here, they can’t make this fly. Some great talents, like the terrific Ken Marino (IN A WORLD), are wasted in throw-away bits (a nose whistler…really?). Entertainment Weekly featured this flick in their Summer preview issue…of 2015 (supposedly it was nine months old by then)! So maybe comedy does have a shelf life, an expiration date, because after a couple of years MASTERMINDS is more than ripe…it really smells…desperate.

ANGRY BIRDS – Review

Angry_Birds_Movie

Review by Dane Marti

ANGRY BIRDS is a film experience of monumental proportions—if gauged by the excited kids in the theater. Basically, the story centers around an angry red bird living amidst a colorful array of other flightless birds on a small island somewhere in the world. The birds are all colorfully plumed and seem to be awfully well adjusted. Some might say, too well adjusted for their own good. I’m not exactly sure why the birds are unable to fly, but that must have been a major element of the original game that this film grew from.

Red bird is ANGRY. He’s hot under the feathers! Like many of us non-cartoon humans—at least I like to think I’m not a cartoon! –Red bird has seriously intense anger issues, and near the start of his amusing film, he finds himself in a class with other malcontents. It’s one of the funniest scenes in the film. These issues set him apart from the politically correct, self-obsessed and painfully unaware birds on the island. Of course, all the birds worship a legendary, mythic bald eagle.

The Angry Bird is definitely an outcast—at least until a bizarre ship full of gelatinous, surreal, neon-green pigs shows up on the island with supposedly benign intentions. No…they wouldn’t possibly want to steal bird eggs to take home for a massive omelet fest of monumental proportions!

Now, although the C.G. animated flick is a satire, I kept expecting the film to have a sweet, left-leaning message about being friends and brothers with all people, regardless of gender, species or color affiliation. That would have been just fine, albeit a bit predictable. Strangely, this doesn’t occur: and our bird (birds?) on the island must fight and defend their lives against the intentions of those evil, diabolical green pigs!

ANGRY BIRDS started as a video game franchise by a Finnish company, directed with flare by Clay Kaytis and Fergal Reilly, written by Jon Vitti and featuring, among many excellent voices, by actors such as Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Maya Rudolf, Peter Dinklage and the legendary Sean Penn.

ANGRY BIRDS made me laugh out loud throughout its relatively short running time. In fact, I wasn’t the only kid laughing! As usual, there were many witty, clever adult jokes thrown in for the adults—including a rather amusing Shining scene reference. As someone who has a degree in digital animation, the design and movement of the Angry Birds universe is stellar – nicely created without going over the top—creating a nice balance of cartoon (especially old Warner Bros. Cartoons!), with more modern computer-generated imagery.  While not a classic in its field, and definitely not on a par with THE JUNGLE BOOK, which came close to being perfect in my book, ANGRY BIRDS is a solid, zany, fun film for children and adults alike. See this film or get anger issues!
