One Final Video Of MAD MAX: FURY ROAD Before Trailer Hits Tuesday, March 31

FRD-22003.JPG

“What A Lovely Day!” Get ready because the madness is about to begin.

Here’s the final piece to the video puzzle of MAD MAX: FURY ROAD before the new trailer debuts on Tuesday, March 31st.

From director George Miller, originator of the post-apocalyptic genre and mastermind behind the legendary “Mad Max” franchise, comes MAD MAX: FURY ROAD, a return to the world of the Road Warrior, Max Rockatansky.

In case you missed the other videos, check ’em out below.

The movie stars Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Hugh Keays-Byrne, Nathan Jones, Zoë Kravitz, Riley Keough, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Abbey Lee, Courtney Eaton.

Here’s another look at the insane trailer that screened at Comic Con.

Haunted by his turbulent past, Mad Max (Tom Hardy) believes the best way to survive is to wander alone. Nevertheless, he becomes swept up with a group fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by an elite Imperator, Furiosa (Charlize Theron).

They are escaping a Citadel tyrannized by the Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne), from whom something irreplaceable has been taken.

Enraged, the Warlord marshals all his gangs and pursues the rebels ruthlessly in the high-octane Road War that follows.

Composer Junkie XL (RUN ALL NIGHT, the upcoming BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE with Hans Zimmer) has composed the score. Read our interview with him here.

Ryan Reynolds “bears” it all in this first official reveal of DEADPOOL, aka “The Merc with a Mouth,” via his Twitter page (twitter.com/VancityReynolds).

He also mentioned that “No bears were harmed in the making of this photo. Though many bears likely turned on,” along with a photo of Burt Reynolds.

Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

DEADPOOL is from director Tim Miller. He was nominated, along with Jeff Fowler, in 2004 at the 77th Academy Awards in the Best Animated Short category for GOPHER BROKE.

The cast includes Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Ed Skrein, and Gina Carano.

Watch Jake Gyllenhaal, Rachel McAdams‬ And 50 Cent In Intense First Trailer For SOUTHPAW

SOUTHPAW

Here’s your first look at the brand new trailer for SOUTHPAW.

The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker, Rachel McAdams, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Rita Ora, Naomie Harris and Victor Ortiz.

From acclaimed director Antoine Fuqua (TRAINING DAY) and starring Academy Award nominated Jake Gyllenhaal (NIGHTCRAWLER, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN) comes a story of tragedy, loss and the painful road to redemption… Billy “The Great” Hope (Gyllenhaal) is the reigning Junior Middleweight Champion whose unorthodox stance, the so-called “Southpaw,” consists of an ineloquent, though brutal, display of offensive fighting…one fueled by his own feelings of inadequacy and a desperate need for love, money and fame.

With a beautiful family, home and financial security, Billy is on top both in and out of the ring until a tragic accident leaves his wife dead and sends him into a downward spiral. His days now an endless haze of alcohol and prescription drugs, his daughter taken by Child Services and his home repossessed by the bank, Billy’s fate is all but sealed until a washed up former boxer named Tick agrees to take the bereaved pugilist under his wing so long as he agrees to his strict ethos.

Relentless and utterly committed to a fighter that thinks as much as he throws punches, Tick rebuilds Billy into a new man: one that is agile, fearsome and uncompromising in the ring while thoughtful, loving and disciplined outside of it.

Now, as he works to regain custody of his daughter and mounts a professional comeback, Billy must face his demons head-on as he learns that, sometimes, your greatest opponent can be yourself.

From The Weinstein Company, SOUTHPAW opens in theaters on July 31st.

DELI MAN – The Review

deliman_image

DELI MAN is not a movie about food. On the surface, it appears to be a documentary about deli food and it’s history, but in truth is much more focused on a passion. This film chronicles the passion of a handful of men passionate about a rapidly dying breed of cultural establishments and their determination to stick it out. This is great because, honestly, we really don’t need more food documentaries. We have plenty.

Much of this lively, often humorous documentary focuses on one man, David “Ziggy” Gruber, a curious kid with an old spirit turned classically trained chef turned deli owner and operator. Directed Erik Greenberg Anjou rightfully spends a lot of time with Ziggy, as he wears his passion on his sleeve and truly knows what he’s doing. Anjou chronicles Ziggy’s formative childhood years, his inspiration and journey to becoming the heart of one of the last great delicatessens to survive through personal interviews with the man himself as well as with friends and family.

DELI MAN maintains a light-hearted tone, incorporating formally staged segments with more candid moments in the deli and in Ziggy’s personal life, which helps tell the big picture of what it takes and what’s at stake, clinging onto a dream that few still share. Ziggy doesn’t just promote himself and his deli, but takes the audience on a tour of the past present and future of the deli life and his neighborhood, on which is what a deli ultimately dives. With neighborhoods changing or even dying, how does a deli survive, or does it adapt? This is a problem with not just one answer, as we see through various deli owner’s experiences.

Anjou adds an element of celebrity credibility, of sorts, sprinkling several interviews with well-known deli patrons throughout the film. Interviews from the likes of Jerry Stiller, Larry King, Fyvush Finkel, and more add levity, humor and an air of notoriety to the film, but when its all said and done, its Ziggy who is the star and who carries the emotional and memorable punch that gives the film its charm.

DELI MAN fully immerses the audience in the deli culture, both in a booth as a customer preparing to savor a juicy pastrami sandwich and behind the counter in the kitchen, lovingly and masterfully preparing the food so crucial to so many patrons daily life. With a history as rich as this, and one which many will find is not exactly what they presumed — courtesy of Anjou’s research and casual approach to covering — its difficult not wanting to run out to the nearest deli and grab a bite after seeing the film. Unfortunately, seeing the film awakens a harsh reality that these true delicatessens are harder to find than ever.

From mouth-watering flavors to fascinating stories, DELI MAN satisfies many cravings for good cultural documentaries. This is a friendly, fun and freely flowing film, not tied down to a traditional sluggish structure like so many documentaries. As Ziggy says in the film, “if only they could smell with their eyes,” referring to the audience of the film, you’ll definitely agree after seeing DELI MAN and catching the deli bug from the film’s central subject.

DELI MAN opens at Landmark Theatres – Plaza Frontenac today, Friday, March 27th, 2015.

HOME – The Review

Hop aboard the cinema saucer, ’cause it’s time for another animated alien adventure. Let’s see, the last big cartoon with a human and space creature teamed-up to find home may have been LILO & STITCH (or, perhaps it was the first big feature with that theme), so we’re probably due for another spin around the galaxy. And the whole “Earthers are odd”, gags have become a comedy staple, mostly on TV with Uncle Martin, Mork, Alf, and the “3rd Rock” gang. And there’s the whole STARMAN/ET movie legacy. Yes, this is a mix of comedy and a dash of drama, but the real drama may be behind the scenes with this film’s producer, DreamWorks Animation. After a couple of sequels and a TV adaptation, this is their first original feature work in two years (though it is based on a children’s’ book, “The True Meaning of Smekday” by Adam Rex). Plus, the last year has been a rough one for them with big management changes and even bigger staff lay-offs with the slashing of much of their future feature slate. In other words, the main rival to Disney/Pixar needs a big hit. Will they find one with this unlikely friendship behind the wheel, cruising the planet in search of HOME?

The film’s opening moments give us the 411 on the nomadic alien race called the Boov. Nomadic because they’re experts at fleeing and hiding, re-locating to different planets in order to avoid their arch-enemies, the brutal warriors of the Gorg. Well, the leader of the Boov, Captain Smek (voice of Steve Martin) has decided that Earth will be their new hide-out. So what happens to the current inhabitants? Huge globes glide down to the planet, scoop up all the humans, and re-locates them in deserted areas. Now the Boov provide them (us) with new homes (looking like the neighborhood from TV’s “Full House”) alongside big amusement centers/parks. The excited Boovs move into the now empty spaces, none more excited than the endearingly goofy Oh (Jim Parsons). Once settled in, he decides to throw a big housewarming party and sends out an email “e-vite”. But the doofus hits the “send all” button which will send the message into space and alert the Gorg. When Smek can’t block it (Oh has a password that is not “password”, horrors!), he sends his agents to capture Oh. Luckily, Oh runs into the last human in the city (she avoided the big vacum-scoopers), a young girl named ‘Tip’ (Rihanna) and her pet cat, ‘Pig’. The two hop in her lil’ red compact car and hit the road, evading the Boov while trying to re-unite Tip with her displaced mom Lucy (Jennifer Lopez). Can they find her before Smek’s men and the Gorg catch up with them?

Parsons leads the voice cast, but ultimately his “Oh” is just his TV “Big Bang” character “Sheldon” dotted with lots of fractured grammar (“We is going to the Paris?’). Rihanna makes for a convincing teenager, but there ‘s no real reason (besides her impressive fan base) for Tip to have a pop star’s voice. The same could be said of her mother, but she doesn’t have a lot of screen time (but the producers are selling this as a Lopez flick). Martin may be the only one who sounds like he’s having a great time, bringing lots of energy to the dim, pompous Smek. Besides Tip and Lucy, the other humans seemed to have been beamed over from other recent DreamWorks movies. The design of the Boov is pleasing, as if Playdough melded with a mood ring (they change color to match their emotions), but also feels familiar. The backgrounds are colorful with excellent panoramic space shots. Unfortunately it feels as though we’re stuck in the front seat of that car forever (cue the kids’ “Are we there, yet?”), making it seem twice its 94 minute running time. Besides Smek’s gesturing with his staff which holds the “shush” stone, the 3D effects are pretty pedestrian as is the soundtrack with one bland, indistinguishable pop ballad flowing into the next. After the fantastic HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON and KUNG FU PANDA flicks, it feels like DreamWorks it just marking time until the next installments of those franchises (it looks like much of this farmed out overseas) . This isn’t the dregs of the studio (SHARK TALE, you need not worry), but it’s not the kind of work that’s going to turn things around. It may be a good sitter for the very wee viewers on a rainy day, but animation aficionados deserve so much more (and with DRAGON, these folks really delivered). Perhaps this is a tale better suited to the home video market. Maybe HOME will play best at home, but it’s not worth the multiplex trek.
