Dan Fogler Talks DON PEYOTE + Secret Projects

don_peyote_dan_fogler_mental_hospital

Two weeks ago I posted the first part of my most recent interview with Dan Fogler, which you can check out right HERE. In that video, we mostly talked about his graphic novel MOON LAKE which is available now for anyone looking for a last minute Christmas gift. I promised there was more and I wasn’t kidding. After going through 40+ minutes of footage, here is part 2 in which I chat with Fogler about several upcoming projects including DON PEYOTE, Kyle Newman’s BARELY LETHAL & his hope for a FANBOYS 2.

As you may remember from previous articles, DON PEYOTE is Fogler’s second film behind the camera and stars himself along with a ton of great celebrity cameos including Anne Hathaway, Josh Duhamel, Topher Grace, and Jay Baruchel.  Having seen a nearly finished cut of this psychotic acid trip of a film, I cannot wait for it to be unleashed upon the world. But until then, this video will have to do…

While chatting, Dan also gave us a very exclusive brief sneak peak at a super secret project that he is working on. It is so secret that it had to be put in a second video just in case the powers that be make us take it down. I’ve already had to blur out some of the clip he shows us. Dan refused to give me any hard details and swore me to secrecy on the little bit he did divulge. All I can say is that he is working with some awesome people on it and it may involve a fair bit of action. Enjoy!

Dan Fogler Talks Moon Lake 2

Fogler Moon Lake

We like to get together with Dan Fogler every few months to chat about his latest projects and get a few updates on some older ones. I had the pleasure of sitting down with him just before Thanksgiving to discuss his new graphic novel MOON LAKE 2, which is now available from the fine folks at Archaia. I loved the madcap lunacy of the first volume but this one has somehow managed to top the insanity with even more sex, violence and twisted humor. Check out the video below to see what Dan has to say about this project, as well as a little update on the long overdue HYSTERICAL PSYCHO. And check back in a few days for the second part of the interview where we discuss some of his upcoming film projects!

And for all you New Yorkers reading this right now, Dan Fogler will be at Forbidden Planet signing copies of MOON LAKE at 7 pm TONIGHT! If you are a fan of any of his work, this is an event you definitely don’t want to miss.  Dan said he will be giving away some cool stuff for the first 60 people who show up so if you plan to attend, get there early!

WAMG Exclusive: DAN FOGLER talks Movies, TV & Comic Con

Even our most casual readers seem to know that we are big fans of DAN FOGLER at WAMG. I love chatting with the man and our interviews always seem to go off topic in the best possible way. I recently got the chance to talk with him about a slew of projects he is working on.

RANDOMNESS

As I already said, our interviews tend to go way off topic. Here are some random but strangely hilarious moments from our chat.

DAN FOGLER ON SCULPTURE

Dan talks about a new hobby he picked up.

We also talked a lot about TAKE ME HOME TONIGHT & the awesomely 80s Atomic Tom music video. I will post that footage when the film is released on DVD, Blu-Ray & VOD on July 19th!

WAMG Exclusive: Dan Fogler Talks New Film & Graphic Novel

Recently, I posted an interview with Dan Fogler (Fanboys, Balls of Fury) about his Atom.com webseries M’LARKY. The first season just ended (Watch HERE) so I thought I’d post some of the other cool stuff Dan mentioned during our interview.

In the video below, Dan breaks the news about his new film DON PEYOTE. This is his second feature as a writer/director but unlike HYSTERICAL PSYCHO Dan also stars in this one. After the interview, I got to see some footage from the film and it is going to surprise you. This is a very different role for Dan and his comparison to Woody Allen is spot on. The film also has some rather surprising cameos by Jay Baruchel and Anne Hathaway. They are still deep in production on this but I have no doubt that this is going to be one very interesting flick.

Dan also gave us a quick update on the status of HYSTERICAL PSYCHO. I’ve seen the film a few times now and it really is a fantastic EVIL DEAD style horror comedy. The film will hopefully be coming out this October, along with a graphic novel based on the film’s main location. Here’s a quick video of what Dan had to say about the film and the MOON LAKE graphic novel.

And here are two pages of artwork from it: (Warning: The second image is VERY GRAPHIC)

I think the artwork is incredible; how about you? Which of Dan’s upcoming projects are you most excited about?

Dan Fogler is Full of M’LARKY

Last Tuesday night I went to Bar 13 for a preview of Atom.com’s newest original web series, M’LARKY. Dan Fogler (BALLS OF FURY, FANBOYS) created the series, which he also stars in along with Josh Warren, TJ Hassan, Jeffrey Ross, Gilbert Gottfried, and Ariel Shafir. Here is the plot according to the official Facebook page:

Jon M’larky is a renegade cop who partners up with Chicago Cubbs, a man torn with revenge over the death of his cousin Gel Roy, to take down the worlds most notorious drug lord Toblerone. Produced by Studio 13.

This description does not do the show justice because it is far more insane. The show is a barrage of hilarious and over the top homages to classic cop movies and TV shows told through green screen action, video game footage and one-liners. The storyline is extremely loose but that is only to fit as many jokes and slapstick action as possible in each episode, which only run a few minutes.

Similar to Fogler’s directorial debut, the equally insane horror comedy HYSTERICAL PSYCHO, it is easy to tell that a lot of fun was had on set while making this show. Not only does it come through on the screen but Dan had a huge grin whenever talking about M’LARKY. I’ll be posting a full interview soon but for now check out the first two episodes of M’LARKY at www.Mlarky.com.

And if you want a chance to win some stuff by watching the show, enter this contest from Atom.com: http://www.atom.com/blog/2010/05/19/win-a-prize-mlarky-has-a-case-for-you-to-crack

Full Disclosure: I am friends with Dan Fogler and producer Thomas Sullivan but that doesn’t alter my opinion of the show. It’s a damn fun web series.

WAMG Interview: Dan Fogler

Dan Fogler Interview

One of the best things about writing for this site is getting to meet some really awesome people. I first spoke with Dan Fogler back at Tribeca when he was promoting his insane horror-comedy ‘Hysterical Psycho’. I met up with him again in June to talk more about the film but we unfortunately had to cut the interview short. We finally met up late last week to finish it up. I filmed over 90 minutes and still have a ton of great stuff to edit but I wanted to post some stuff now.

In the first video, Dan has a special introduction for our site and then announces some big news regarding ‘Hysterical Psycho’. (Spoiler: It’s coming to theaters!) The second video kills the rumor that he plans to fill John Candy’s shoes in the supposed remake of ‘Uncle Buck’. The third video is all about some more films Dan is not involved with and the fourth focuses on some projects he will actually be in. The final bonus video entitled The Dan Fogler Show is a 21 minute video where Dan interviews me about my film ‘Stuck Like Chuck’. Enjoy!

Tribeca Interview: ‘Hysterical Psycho’

hysterical-pycho-interview

‘Hysterical Psycho’ was one of my favorite films at Tribeca. We have mentioned it many times on this site and Scott also shares my love for the film. At Tribeca, in addition to getting a chance to attend the World Premiere of this awesome flick, I also got the chance to sit down with some of the actors from the film. The following 20-minute ride into madness is a taste of what it was like hanging out with these guys. Enjoy!

We will do our best to keep you updated on ‘Hysterical Psycho’ and we would like to wish Dan Fogler the best of luck in landing a distributor so that more movie geeks can see this film.

Tribeca Review: ‘Hysterical Psycho’

hystericalpsycho

Hysterical Psycho is now one of my favorite horror comedies of all time. It easily takes a spot on the list right alongside Evil Dead II. Now I know what you are thinking. Every few months another horror film comes along and some reviewer compares it to Evil Dead. And every single time, that reviewer should have their hand cut off and NOT replaced with a chainsaw for making such an unfair comparison. Well go ahead Evil Dead fans, call shenanigans on me (and Scott), but I guarantee you will take it back after watching this film.

In addition to being the closest thing we are getting to an Evil Dead IV, Hysterical Psycho also takes its cues from dozens of other classic horror films. The film is actually packed with so many references and homages to great horror film, I am sure dozens of drinking games will be made around it. And they should be created because this is one hell of a fun film to watch with like-minded friends. As long as your friends like violence and are not affected by lunar radiation of course. It should be said that while the film wear’s its influences on its sleeve, it never once feels like it is ripping off something or trying to squeeze in a reference. Hysterical Psycho is completely original while utilizing every clichà © in horror and literally stealing shots from other films. It all fits perfectly in the mold created by Dan Fogler and partially sculpted by the cast.

The fact that this film went from idea to filming in about a month is amazing. Dan Fogler has crafted such a great film and it seems like a lot of fun was had on set. The film stars mostly members of Dan’s acting group, Stage 13. They are a truly talented bunch, and I am lucky to have had the chance to meet some of them at Tribeca. The basis for the entire film started with the suppressed laugh of Randy Baruh, who plays the film’s hysterical psycho. From there, Dan came up with a story outline and the cast all had a hand in creating the characters and expanding on the story. This is a great process and I truly hope they do it again on another project soon.

Dan Fogler did a fantastic job directing this film, as well. The cinematography is perfect, as is the sound editing. If you are like me and love that scene in Evil Dead when we hear a whomping sound every time the camera passes a beam, you will love the sound design in this film. The special effects are also well done and the few moments of animation are hysterical.

It is fairly obvious that I loved this movie. Hysterical Psycho is equally demented and hilarious. Fogler describes it as Rock n’ Roll Hitchcock meets Evil Dead meets Young Frankenstein and I completely agree. This needs to find distribution immediately so it can go on and become the cult classic it is destined to be.

5 out of 5 Suppressed Laughs

And because it is so F***ing batshit crazy awesome, here is the trailer for Hysterical Psycho:

Tribeca 2009: Day 3 Recap

tribecaimage

Day 3 started with me waiting 25 minutes at my bus stop since the bus I wanted to take must have come early and the second bus came late. I skipped the DirectTV Press Center (ie, my free Snapple) and ran straight to the theater. I made the screening with 2 minutes to spare before the most controversial film of the festival played. I am of course talking about OUTrage, Kirby Dick’s documentary about closeted gay politicians. I had heard good things and I loved Dick’s This Film Is Not Yet Rated so I had high hopes for Outrage. Luckily, it delivers. It is a fantastic documentary that is both informative and very entertaining. No matter what your position is on gay marriage, you need to see this movie.

outrage

After the film I headed back to the Press Center and Free Snapple. I worked on questions for my Hysterical Psycho interview later in the day and questions for another interview in case things worked out. It was nearly time for my next screening and I was getting hungry so I headed back towards the theater just as they were setting up for some party at the press lounge. Movies come first for me so I skipped the free booze (I don’t drink anyway, no really, oh don’t look down at me) and I headed over to see Don Mckay. I grabbed a bite to eat at Subway but then I went to the theater. And yes, when I walked in and told the girl “Don McKay† she asked me if that was my name or the movie. I settled in to my seat and saw a movie I did not really expect. I thought it was a mature dramady in the same vein as Sideways since I heard people compare Thomas Haden Church’s performance in this to his role in Sideways. Instead I was treated to a Pitch Black Comedy that I am still not sure how to react to. I did enjoy it and I would recommend it. There was some subtle humor that I did not find very funny but the other critics did seem to enjoy it. I did laugh really hard at a few things though and I never knew where the story was going. I wasn’t sure where I was going after the film either.

don-mckay

I may have had an interview scheduled but I wasn’t sure. There was also a movie that I wanted to see but cancelled for the interview that wasn’t definite. Earlier in the week I had set something up for around 3-ish at what I assumed was the Press Center. Then I was told the person I was interviewing wasn’t available but some cast might be available. I emailed back that I would interview the cast but didn’t get a response. So I waited in the Press Center but never received a call. I worked on a few more questions for my Hysterical Psycho interview and eventually headed out to it. I of course grabbed a free Snapple first.

I decided to walk the 30-something blocks to Dan Fogler’s studio for the interview, which proves that I am an idiot. I obviously learned nothing from last night’s walk to the SVA theater for the Hysterical Psycho premiere. And today was hot, really hot. Anyway, the studio was awesome. Nothing too amazing but the kind f place I could imagine owning/working in myself in a few years. I settled in for my interview with Dan Fogler and some of the cast from the film. Actually, it was pretty much the whole male cast of the film. And when I say interview, I mean I occasionally asked a question or made a statement amongst nonstop rantings and ravings of these madmen. It was so much fun and I can’t wait to show you guys the footage. When I received the signal that it was time for me to wrap up, I asked one final questions which prompted another barrage of stories and jokes. I had absolutely no control of the interview and I loved it. Unfortunately about half my questions were left unanswered, mainly questions for Dan not pertaining to Hysterical Psycho. Hopefully, we will get a chance to interview him sometime soon for those.

hysterical-pycho-interview

After my interview, I thought I’d ask to stick around for a little. In my experience, most reporters/journalists/bloggers hate having to sit through other people’s interviews. At Comic Con, all I heard while waiting was other people complaining about having to wait. Depending on the interview, I almost never mind and actually enjoy it. So I decided to hang around for a bit. I am so glad I did. In between interviews I got to talk with so many great people like Randy Baruh, Nicky D. and Ariel Shafir who are three of the very talented cast members from the film. I also loved hearing more about the film and the making of it. The interview that is going up on MakingOf.com is great and will be especially interesting for filmmakers. And the interview for IFC will be amazingly entertaining when cut together. They let me shoot some behind the scenes for it but I won’t post anything until a little after they do. Towards the end I even ran into Weston who has contributed to our site in the past. It was really an awesome experience and I want to thank everyone at Stage 13 for talking with me and letting me hang around. (I hope I didn’t come off as annoying or stalkeresque or anything like that)

Overall, this was another great day at Tribeca. I don’t have any interviews lined up for tomorrow but I am looking forward to all 3 movies I have on my schedule. If all goes as planned, I should get home early enough to catch up on all my reviews and maybe even my HW.

Tribeca 2009: Day 2 Recap

tribecaimage

Day 2 started early yesterday morning with interviews for Black Dynamite. I had a one on one interview with Director Scott Sanders, who was a lot of fun to talk to. Hopefully I can get footage from that online soon. After the 1:1, I attended a roundtable discussion with Scott Sanders and the star of the film, Michael Jai White. I really enjoyed learning some more about Black Dynamite and I really hope that their ideas for a sequel pan out. It needs to get made.

After the interviews, and a $5 foot long for lunch, I watched my first film of the day. Moon received some huge reviews at Sundance and it will be released soon through Sony Picture Classics. I am a huge fan of Mr. Sam Rockwell. If you read my Most Anticipated Films of the Fest post, you also know that I love Kevin Spacey’s voice. So did I love Moon? Well, I think I’ll need to watch it again to tell you if I loved it but I certainly really enjoyed the film. I did love the story though. Rockwell gives an amazing performance and director Duncan Jones does a lot with a small budget. It is one of the best films at the festival so far.

Since an interview afterwards fell through, I headed to a screening of Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench. It was my first public screening, since everything prior was for press & industry only. The theater was packed and there was a short Q & A following the film. I applaud the young cast and crew for making a film and getting it in Tribeca, but I really did not enjoy it. To me, it was essentially a mumblecore film with jazz music and the occasional musical number. Off topic, in the theater 2 seats in front of me was Debra Messing.

After Park Bench I walked over to the SVA theater for the Hysterical Psycho premiere. Walking was a terrible idea. The theater was way too far away, especially since I was carrying my camera and equipment.   Once I did get there, I settled in for what may have been the most fun movie at the festival. I think Hysterical Psycho and Black Dynamite would be a perfect double feature. Dan Fogler’s film was one of the best attempts at horror comedy I have seen. It definitely reminded me of Evil Dead. I loved it. I was so tired before the film and afterwards I felt wired. Unfortunately it didn’t last long because I fell asleep on the 90 minute bus ride home.
