SNOW FLOWER AND THE SECRET FAN – The Review

SNOW FLOWER AND THE SECRET FAN is an endearing drama of female bonding across many generations in China based on a novel of the same name. Director Wayne Wang did an admirable job relating the book into a shorter feature length film, unfortunately it ultimately mired the film down. He was, however, successful with his work with THE JOY LUCK CLUB. The female leads, Bingbing Li and Gianna Jun, played the dual adult roles from 19th century women to modern day Shanghai independent women and in a believable fashion. The screenplay definitely could have introduced the audience more with the modern day friendship to make the friendship more accessible.

The narrative is set into two parts that flip back and forth accordingly to the story’s progression. One is of an arranged friendship of two young girls, and the other of young teen girls finding friendship through happenstance in modern day Shanghai. Both eras effectively display the hardships that time, distance, and obligations can truly test even the strongest of female friendships-laotongs “old sames”. The characters of Snow Flower and Lily are places in an arranged relationship and are forced into a laotong. A laotong is actually a written an spiritual contract between two women to bind their souls for eternity. To encourage the strength and closeness of this kinship, they are required to create a “nu shu” — a secret language only they two are able to decipher and is exchanged between the folds of the silk fans. Jumping to the 21st century, we are introduced to teenage Nina and Sophia that develop a similar friendship, that even though different circumstances, basically endure parallel hardships and struggle to maintain the friendship.

Wang created a wonderful cultural diversity between the diametrically opposed eras using the harsh, bland landscape of the 19th century versus the 21st century skyscrapers with bright colored lights and fast paced traffic. In their own ways, both have created significant obstacles on the laotongs. Throughout the film, we are exposed to cultural norms of the Eastern world, modern and ancient which was quite interesting. However, it was one of the only elements of the film, besides the lovely score, that kept a relatively slow pace interesting and engaging. And, it should be noted there is a very unexpected cameo in the film.

Despite time, culture, and location, the bonding of a true friendship, laotongs (with or without a written contract) can be everlasting in any race or religion, can relate to the heartfelt kinship of your true “best friend”. On a side note, I watched this with my best friend, and it made me appreciate our bond even more.

KUNG FU PANDA 2 – The Review

More heart, deeper storyline, and more action is what this sequel brings to the screen. Reuniting the writing talents of Jonathan Aibel and Glenn Berger, that penned the first installment of this soon to be trilogy, was a magnificent choice for the film. The characters have more depth, connection, heart-warming moments, and of course more fight choreography. Directed by Jennifer Yuh, known for SPAWN – THE TV SERIES and writing collaborator on other animated projects such as SINBAD: LEGEND OF THE SEVEN SEAS and THE REAL ADVENTURES OF JOHNNY QUEST – THE TV SERIES, knows animation well and it shows by her distinct perception of the fight sequences and overall look of the film. She is not afraid to use different camera angles and close-ups to instant sky shots. This kept a very good pace while watching the film while also giving the audience a better look at the town and outlying areas. And, by the way, kudos need to be given to the perpetually overlooked fight choreographer of the animated film. They were unique in several elements and gave Yuh more to work with. Weapons, items in the path, and their own talents were interwoven in the fight scenes, which there are many-as to be expected in a film about Kung Fu.

In Dreamworks latest animated feature, we find the characters from the original, Po (Jack Black), Tigress (Angelina Jolie), Master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman), Mantis (Seth Rogen), Monkey (Jackie Chan), Crane (David Cross), and Viper (Lucy Liu) using their ever developing Kung Fu skills to fight against a new enemy…the evil Lord Shen (Gary Oldman). There is a huge back story that is better revealed when you see it at the theater so you can be genuinely surprised. But, it is foreseen by the soothsayer that Lord Shen and Po’s pasts are linked mysteriously. This fact is shrouded in flashbacks and interjected back story throughout the film. Po’s mind opening up to the past makes his concentration of the future more difficult than usual, and he is also on another quest in this film-to find inner peace. A necessary step in the development of Kung Fu, so says Master Shifu. There are many journeys throughout the movie that all intertwine in an interesting solution that sets up for the third film. We do meet some new characters along the expedition that enhance the story and will most likely be part of the next installment. Some of them are significant names in the martial arts world, such as John-Claude Van Damme and Michelle Yeoh.

All in all, it was very entertaining with the fight scenes, but the new story line truly gave an otherwise predictable sequel a twist or two and kept you engaged. Po’s antics as a clutz that ends up falling on the right villain kept families engaged thoughout and laughing out loud as well. So, parents beware; yes there are weapons and yes there is plenty of fighting but no noticeable blood (keeping it PG) and not-so-noticeable deaths. Highly recommended family diversion for a couple hours, although the film itself has a running time of 85 minutes. From the WeAreMovieGeeks team…Enjoy the holiday weekend of sequels!

FAST FIVE – The Review

Family. Not the first thing that comes to mind when you look at a movie like FAST FIVE. (aka FAST & FURIOUS 5:RIO HEIST) It is not just the fast cars, hot women, and exciting chase scenes that have given these fast and furious films their longevity, but the idea of the family is the underlying theme that this franchise has built itself around. Family can hold many different meanings to people and manifest itself in a myriad of forms. For some it is the blood line, others it is their neighborhood, many it is their friends, and once in awhile it becomes one’s associates-sometimes it is all the above. Action writers Chris Morgan and Gary Scott Thompson created an ultimate heist film incorporating this element with the intelligence of OCEANS ELEVEN, the fight scenes and action of THE EXPENDABLES, chase scenes that are not comparable, and yet still throws in a balance of the family dynamic. Director Justin Lin (FAST AND FURIOUS and now attached to the new TERMINATOR film) took this screenplay and ran, or more importantly raced, with it all the way to the end of the film. (and beyond…stay past the credits for a jaw dropper-or two) His direction allows the viewer to take a ride-along in some scenes and allows them to be takenaway to masterful city shots, and all the while keeps an even and fun pace that keeps the audience cheering and ducking along with the action.

The film picks up where the last one left us, but now the crew is separated and on the run in South America. Set in the exotic, yet mostly impoverished Rio De Janeiro, Brazil is a very fitting setting for this installment of the five films. There is the strong contrast of the rich and poor, the high sharp hills versus the mighty ocean, and the natural beauty opposing the manufactured cars and buildings. a fitting simile to the highs and lows of any relationships or familial situation, not to mention politics and work. Sometimes it is difficult to choose right over wrong, and FAST FIVE demonstrates the struggle of the diometrically opposing forces at work.

The major players in the FAST AND FURIOUS are back for this non-stop ride in Brazil with Vin DIesel as Dominic Toretto, Paul Walker as Brian O’Conner, Jordana Brewster as Mia, and the new fed in town-Dwayne Johnson as Hobbs. Oh yes, there is friction and action throughout the film between Dom and Hobbs. Dom’s crew reunites some players from the past F&F films and creates a new, large crew united for heist to end their running and teach the ruthless drug king, that is the ultimate oppressor to the city, a lesson. They find themselves in a position to help each other while helping the less fortunate population. Trying to set the heist to precision execution, the crew forms a new family and the audience is introduced to a couple surprises along the journey. The comfort and comraderie the cast displays is evident in the portrayal of the characters and perhaps that is yet another reason this has been such a highly successful franchise for Universal Pictures. It has to be noted the new Dodge Chargers and Dom’s vintage GTO are fantastic car stars, but it is still fun to see the creativity of color and ingenuity of the race cars and the abilty they have to exite us as if they were another character and family member. Chase scenes with cars can be boring, overdone, or even useless; however in FAST FIVE, they are absolutely essential and pivotal to plot development, not mention some of the best car chases ever seen. Yes, there is some hackneyed dialogue spattered about the film, but this is an action movie-enjoy it!

To sum it all up…this truly has earned the namesake of the FAST AND FURIOUS franchise. Each of the characters presented has fair development and face time, and there are a lot of them in this film. The cars are ever fabulous and entertaining; so much so that the film makes you want to race on the highway when heading home. This is the best of the five so far, and it is not just for the love of Dwayne Johnson. An all around exciting and entertaining fim that is edge of your seat intense, but with a real story that has been building for years now; and hopefully, more to come. In the words of Dom, “Salud!, mi familia!”

Review: JUST GO WITH IT

Just go with it…usually easier said than done. When it comes to love, things can get more complicated. Then throw in a couple kids, lies, and friendships it becomes all the more difficult. The new comedy starting comedy heavy hitter Adam Sandler (THE WATERBOY, 50 FIRST DATES) and A-lister Jennifer Aniston (THE SWITCH, HE’S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU) is directed by Dennis Dugan (GROWN UPS, YOU DON’T MESS WITH THE ZOHAN) is a laugh out loud funny, yet fairly predictable wingman story.  Yes, the wingman/wingwwoman has been done plenty, but JUST GO WITH IT is actually based on a French play, not a Sandler skit stretched out to a full length film, although it does have much of the typical Sandler humor. This was the best comedic performance Aniston has displayed since FRIENDS, and for once, in a very long time, she was not replaceable in her character. They showed a good chemistry on the camera as well, perhaps from being comfortable as friends for many years now.

The story revolves around Adam Sandler’s character Dr. Danny, a plastic surgeon, and his assistant Katherine played by Jennifer Aniston, and a very young school teacher named Palmer played by Brooklyn Decker (from the upcoming BATTLESHIP, and former Sports Illustrated model). Dr. Danny is a life-long bachelor that uses a special little trick that gets the women every time, but when he meets Palmer he decides she is the one. So, he expands his little scheme into a grand production that includes Katherine and her two adorable children-even index cards. Many cameos, some very unexpected by the way, and a couple other relevant side stories develop that essentially give this movie more depth than the average, superficial guy wants hot young chick movie.

Overall, this is undeniably worth seeing, whether you are a die-hard Adam Sandler fan or just in dire need of a comedy. And, the audience will be laughing throughout the entire film, at unexpected characters and not just at Sandler. Let’s just mention that Rachel Dratch will make you want to slap your knee and the knee of the person in the seat next to you. There is also plenty of eye-candy with the world renowned model Brooklyn Decker and over forty hottie Jennifer Aniston in bikinis set in the landscape of the beautiful Hawaii island of Kaui. Sometime’s a guy’s best wingman is a wingwoman.

WEEKLY BOX OFFICE WRAP JANUARY 28-30 2011

WEEKLY BOX OFFICE WRAP JANUARY 28-30 2011

There was a little strange movement in the past weekend box office. Two new films jumped into the top 3 and an oldie jumped back in to number 10. Warner Brothers new release THE RITE, starring Sir Anthony Hopkins, took possession of the top spot with $14,789,393 in 2,985 theaters with an average of $4,955 per location. The remake of the 1972 Charles Bronson flick THE MECHANIC, released by CBS and starring the rugged Jason Statham, put the hit out on the number three spot. Since it was a fairly slow weekend at the movies, it pulled in only $11,422,006 in 2,703 theaters averaging $4,226 per theater. Surprisingly, THE DILEMMA and YOGI BEAR are still in the top ten. Perhaps the amount of theatres they are still in can account for this? One can only hope.

The remaining new releases for the weekend are not in the top ten, but a couple were close. FROM PRADA TO NADA, a Lionsgate Films release starring the lovely Camilla Belle and Alexa Vega, was released in 256 theaters with an impressive average of $4,358 per theater for a total $1,115,638 for the weekend total. Next is the highly anticipated BIUTIFUL, starring the beautiful Javier Bardem and directed by the Oscar nominated Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, released limited to only 59 theaters this weekend and yielded $456,930 for an average of $7,745 each. Variance Films new release of IP MAN 2: LEGEND OF THE GRANDMASTER, directed by Wilson Yip, showing in 20 theaters averaging $3,053 each for a total weekend of $61,057. WEEKLY BOX OFFICE WRAP 1/14-1/16/2011

We have a new winner for number one! THE GREEN HORNET! THE GREEN HORNET drove The Black Beauty straight to the top with a whopping $33,526,876 in 3,584 theaters with the second highest per theater average of $9,355 in the first week of release from Sony. (And you will never guess which film had the highest, but you will find out.)
THE GREEN HORNET threw TRUE GRIT off the number one saddle and moved it to number three. Universal’s release of THE DILEMMA drove right into the number two slot putting LITTLE FOCKERS into the corner in number six. Last week’s number three, SEASON OF THE WITCH, flew down to number ten in the short lived top three position.
TRON:LEGACY is still hanging on to it’s light cycle at the number seven slot after being out for five weeks now. Films that fell out of the top ten are TANGLED and COUNTRY STRONG. THE KING’S SPEECH just keeps moving up the top ten monarchy, and deservedly so, especially after Colin Firth’s Golden Globe win. THE KING’S SPEECH is now up to the number four position all the way from number nine.
And now for the new releases for the weekend.
The surprising number one per theater average was Sony Classic’s BARNEY’S VERSION in only four theaters with a huge $16,310 each. Perhaps due to the Golden Globe win of Mr.Paul Giamatti? Yamla Pagla Deewana, directed by Samir Karnik, is a Bollywood drama of a father-son journey that produced $504,116 in 84 theaters with an average $6,001 each. THE HEART SPECIALIST, actually filmed in 2006, written and directed by Dennis Cooper and stars Zoe Saldana, was released on the 14th by Freestyle Releasing. Showing in 422theaters, it pumped in $473,062 with an average $1,121 each. Magnolia Pictures released the third installment of the series as ONG BAK 3 in 3 theaters making $5,648 with an average $1.883 each. A 2011 re-issue of the 1925 BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN, directed by Sergei M. Eisenstein, was only released in one theater, but made $5,641.
Finally, the 2009 PLASTIC PLANET by First Run, a documentary directed by Werner Boote, guides the audience on the dangers of plastic to our world. Unfortunately, it was only released in one theater as well with a disparaging $740 take.

WEEKLY BOX OFFICE WRAP January 7-9 2011

JANUARY 7-9th 2011

There was a lot of movement in the top ten films over the weekend with one significant accomplishment-TRUE GRIT lasso’ed itself into the number one spot bringing in $14,605,135 and horse kicked LITTLE FOCKERS into number two pulling in $13,487,245.

The surprise of the weekend was Relativity’s new release SEASON OF THE WITCH, starring Nicolas Cage, flying into the number three position with a decent showing of $10,612,375. It was released in 2,816 theaters with an average $3,769 per theater.

TRON: LEGACY was barely edged out of the spot, but only moved down to the number four slot.

Screen Gem’s COUNTRY STRONG strummed its way into number six by opening in 1,422 more theaters. Now with a 1,424 theater showing, it had the second highest per theater average of $5,145.

The number one highest grossing per theater average was THE KING’S SPEECH with $8,462 in 758 theaters. The unfortunate two movies finally making their journey out of the top ten were GULLIVER’S TRAVELS and THE CHRONICLES OF NARNINA:THE VOYAGE OF THE DAWN TREADER.

The rest of the new releases for the weekend were in limited release, and none of them were even close to breaking the top ten. NO ONE KILLED JESSICA, a Bollywood film by director Raj Kumar Gupta raked in $227,473 in 48 theaters. PHIL OCHS:THERE BUT FOR FORTUNE, out of First Run studios and directed by Kenneth Bowser, made a mere $18,211 in one theater. An IFC release, THE TIME THAT REMAINS directed/starring/writer by Elia Suleiman, is a historic Israeli drama that was nominated for a Golden Palm at Cannes back in 2009. It brought in a simple $6,453 in the one theater it was released in. And the last of the new releases for the weekend is the Romanian film IF I WANT TO WHISTLE, I WHISTLE, directed by Florin Serban and released by Film Movement, was out in one theater and yielded $2,999.

Review: COUNTRY STRONG

Wings can give you strength and make you fly, or keep you on the ground, if not properly cared for. This is an important element to the storyline that COUNTRY STRONG presents to the audience in each character. The film starts off introducing everyone to this good ol’ boy Beau Hutton (Garrett Hedlund) that just wants to perform his music to folks that want to listen. He possesses an old fashioned sense of right and wrong that is so heartfelt that he almost passes on questionable opportunities that would let him take wing and fly with his music career. But, since music does not pay his bills, we join him at his other occupation where we also are introduced to country super star Kelly Canter (Gwyneth Paltrow). She has broken wings at this point in her life and career, but finds a couple new friends along her way out that she helps and that help her. One of those is Loretta Lynn, not the musician, but named after her for good reason, if you know anything about Ms. Lynn. James Canter (Tim McGraw) is Kelly’s husband/manager that seems to have the benefit of many liberties and privileges because of his powerful roles in this mega star’s life. All of which are made clear in the progress of the story. Early on, we also meet Chiles Stanton (Leighton Meester) small town girl, beauty queen, aspiring star yet to find her wings. All of these characters start to connect in a fairly overplayed, but still heart-wrenching story that possesses charm and authenticity. This is a very sensitive, open, and emotionally surprising film from writer/director Shana Feste.

Garrett Hedlund displays such an earnest portrayal of Beau with his ‘Brad Pitt’ factor. He is showing off those deep hypnotizing looks and bona fide grins while he is singing and strumming across the screen. Gwyneth Paltrow delivers one of the most dynamic performances of her career with the range she displays in her singing, guitar playing, and acting. She truly is one of the finest and most talented actresses of her generation, and deservedly so. Leighton Meester did a fine job as the new girl, not original, but a sweet and fresh approach to a weary role. Tim McGraw is becoming such a fine actor that it is a pleasure to see him getting larger roles, especially since the role of James Canter had quite a variety of affect that he handled with distinction.

COUNTRY STRONG does not just have a marvelous cast, but also an all star soundtrack. It is common for films to have a soundtrack or score that can lend itself pleasantly to the story, but when the songs become all but part of the script, and take flight, then that is something remarkable. Obviously the songs are country-western, but the audience does not necessarily need to be an avid listener to feel the emotion and meaning behind each of the perfectly chosen songs. This is, by far, one of the best soundtracks of 2010, and already up and flying high for awards season.

COUNTRY STRONG takes you on a road tour with outstanding artists that interplay theatrically and musically with ease and chemistry.
