HARD TIMES and the Charles Bronson Exhibit April 1st at Schlafly Bottleworks

header-560
“I suppose you’ve been down the long, hard road?”
“Who hasn’t?”

hta10

You never know what’s brewing at Webster University’s Strange Brew cult film series. It’s always the first Wednesday evening of every month, and they always come up with some cult classic to show while enjoying some good food and great suds. The fun happens at Schlafly Bottleworks Restaurant and Bar in Maplewood (7260 Southwest Ave.- at Manchester – Maplewood, MO 63143).

hta11

This month, they’re brewing up some Bronson! HARD TIMES screens at Schlafly Bottleworks Wednesday, April 1st as part of Webster University’s ‘Strange Brew’ Film Series. The ‘Charles Bronson Exhibit’, a collection of movie paper, figures, models kits, toys, and other odd memorabilia will be on display that night at Schlafly.

hta7

No one could touch Charles Bronson in terms of global popularity throughout the 1970’s and HARD TIMES (1975) was his best film from that decade (my favorite for cinema, the only films from the ‘70s I would personally rate above HARD TIMES are TAXI DRIVER, TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, and THE GODFATHER). Director Walter Hill made a remarkably earthy and entertaining film about illegal fighting in Depression-era New Orleans. HARD TIMES, whose succinct tag line read “New Orleans 1933, in those days words didn’t buy much”, perfectly exploits Bronson’s granite presence and is a concise, almost mythical celebration of men who only communicate with their fists. Bronson played Chaney, a hardened loner who hops off a boxcar in New Orleans where he tries to score some quick cash the only way he knows how – with his fists. He teams up with Speed (James Coburn), who acts as his manager, who sets up the fights, which are are all-out and bare-knuckle, held in warehouses and alleys and open by invitation to men with cash to wager.

hta9

Seemingly authentic, rather than over-choreographed, the fight scenes in HARD TIMES are expertly staged and framed by Hill, especially the film’s centerpiece; an underground match in a steel-mesh cage between Bronson and a grinning goon named ‘Skinhead’ played by Robert ‘Mr. Clean’ Tessier. HARD TIMES was the directorial debut for Hill, who had written THE GETAWAY for his friend, director Sam Peckinpah, and would go on to helm some of the smartest action films of the late ‘70s and ‘80s including THE WARRIORS, THE LONG RIDERS, 48 HOURS, and STREETS OF FIRE. Hill said in interviews that enjoyed his experience with Bronson and wanted to work with the star again. But Hill made the mistake of criticizing the performance of Bronson’s wife Jill Ireland, who had a minor role as a hooker who earns Chaney’s affection (at this point, if a producer wanted Bronson, they had to have Jill too – the couple made 15 films together!). Bronson was not thin-skinned, just protective enough of his wife that he refused to work with Hill again because of the sleight, which is too bad because the director’s economic action sensibilities are perfectly in tune with the scruffy street dignity Bronson was capable of and the pair could have made some great films together.

hta5

The HARD TIMES cast includes Strother Martin as an opium-hooked doctor, James Coburn as Speed, Chaney’s manager, Ben Johnson, Bruce Glover, and the great Nick Dimitri as Street, Chaney’s final foe. These vets all bring their A-game but it’s Bronson, whose expression never changes, that commands all the attention. Bronson’s Chaney is a man of few words and no past and it’s perhaps his most fitting role. Acclaimed in 1975, HARD TIMES is the perfect Charles Bronson movie for people who claim not to like Charles Bronson movies and even critics who had previously overlooked Bronson’s abilities were impressed.

hta8

I saw HARD TIMES in 1975 when it was new, riding my bike at 13 to the Des Peres 4 theater with some friends. In the summer of 1978 I attended wrestling camp at the University of Missouri and one night for entertainment, we were screened a 16mm print of HARD TIMES. I now have my own 16mm print of HARD TIME and also an 18-minute Super-8 condensed version of the film that I’ve shown at my monthly Super-8 Movie Madness show. It’s printed on black-and-white stock and dubbed into German, but it still gets the crowd worked upped. When the gang at the Webster University Film Series suggested I choose a film to show at their monthly ‘Strange Brew’ Cult movie series at Schlafly Bottleworks in Maplewood, I knew immediately that HARD TIMES would be my choice. It’s the film in my ‘Top Ten of All Time’ list that I have not seen on the big screen in the longest time. Don’t miss HARD TIMES when it screens at Schlafly Bottleworks Wednesday, April 1st  at Schlafly Bottleworks Restaurant and Bar in Maplewood (7260 Southwest Ave.- at Manchester – Maplewood, MO 63143). The movie starts at 8pm and admission is $5. A yummy variety of food from Schlafly’s kitchen is available as are plenty of pints of their famous home-brewed beer.

THE WARRIORS Come Out and Play-ay This Weekend Midnights at The Tivoli

“I’ll shove that bat up your ass and turn you into a Popsicle”

THE WARRIORS screens this Friday and Saturday nights (June 6th and 7th) at midnight at the Tivoli Theater as part of their ‘Reel Late at the Tivoli’  Midnight series.

warriors4

Walter Hill stylized 1979 modern urban-fantasy adventure THE WARRIORS has overcome the test of time and is now a cult classic – and not without a good reason. This action-packed movie, set in a stylish semi-futuristic version of 70s New York, is roller-coaster ride that never slows down for a second.

warriors3

“The Warriors” are a gang that has its home in Coney Island. One night, Cyrus, the leader of the biggest gang in NYC, the Bronx-based “Grammercy Riffs” invites 9 delegates of each gang in NYC to a meeting hoping to establish peace & collaboration between gangs. During the meeting at the Bronx, Cyrus is murdered, and soon everyone blames the “Warriors”. Knowing they were framed for the killing by another gang, the “Warriors” must return to Coney Island before the cops or the members of the other gangs catch them. Just like in classic odysseys, the group must endure several obstacles as the many gangs of NY are trying to kill them.

warriors2

THE WARRIORS is both thrilling and exciting and while not realistic or accurate (a gang of mimes !?!…the Baseball Furies !?), the gang sub-world of the movie is the perfect setting for this now legendary tale. The acting is remarkably good, considering the young age and lack of experience of those involved in the project. While every member of the “Warriors” is important for the movie, Michael Beck as Swan and James Remar as Ajax shine in their roles. David Patrick Kelly as Luther, member of an important rival gang also has a lot of great scenes, gets the best lines (“Warriors…come out and play-ay!”), and he makes the best of them.

THE LONG RIDERS – The Blu Review

Howdy fans of HBO’s recent series “Deadwood” and the Coen brothers’ TRUE GRIT! Look out! Galloping down the Blu Ray trail is the 1980 epic “oater” THE LONG RIDERS. It tells the story of several of the great outlaw gangs. You may have seen other films concerning the exploits of these desperados. Well this version is worth a look for two reasons. It’s directed by one of the great action film makers to come out of the 1980’s-Walter Hill ( THE WARRIORS, 48 HOURS ). The other reason, and the film’s big marketing point, is the casting of the brothers with real life siblings-David, Keith, and Robert Carradine play the Younger brothers, Randy and Dennis Quaid are the Miller brothers, Nicholas and Christoper Guest are the Ford brothers, and James and Stacy Keach are the James brothers. This might seem like gimmick or “stunt” casting, but the family resemblances and dynamics enhance the story. Davis Carradine’s a great, swaggering thug as Cole Younger and James Keach brings a sad, haunted quality to Jesse James. There’s several great supporting actors here, too. James Whitmore, Jr. is wonderfully smarmy as an over-confident Pinkerton agent who soon realizes that he and his men are in over their heads. Chris Mulkey and Harry Carey, Jr. score big laughs as victims of a stagecoach hold-up. James Remar is scary in a savage saloon knife fight with Cole. Fans of TV’s “Parks and Recreation” will be stunned to see the mother of Leslie Knope ( Amy Poehler ), Pamela Reed playing a very spirited and sexy Belle Starr. She almost makes the screen sizzle.

There’s no extras here beside the theatrical trailer ( doesn’t count as an extra, Hollywood! ), so let’s focus on the film transfer. THE LONG RIDERS  will really give your sound system a test. Some of the dialogue is soft, but the gun shots roar like cannons. The score by Ry Cooder sounds exceptional especially in a square dance scene. Picture quality is supurb except for a few interior shots which were slightly grainy. The scenery is stunning, and the gun battles are beautiful and brutal. Like Sam Peckinpah, Hill made good use of slow motion in the final action sequence. If the film had been made today I’m sure the bullet hits would have been added after filming with digital effects. Back then they used small explosive packs called ‘squibs’. I’d bet that the actors were pretty sore at the end of the day even if they were heavily padded. I’d not seen the film before and aside from Dennis Quaid’s ‘babyface’ ( wonder if that moustache was real ), you might  think it had been made a couple of years ago and not over thirty! THE LONG RIDERS  holds up very well indeed and deserves a spot on the shelf of any western or action film fan.

Dark Castle Entertainment To Partner With IM Global & After Dark Films On New SYLVESTER STALLONE Action Thriller

The project re-teams producer Joel Silver with
Stallone and with director Walter Hill

BURBANK, CA, June 13, 2011 — Dark Castle Entertainment will partner with IM Global and After Dark Films on director Walter Hill’s upcoming action thriller starring Sylvester Stallone, it was announced jointly by the three companies.

The film is scheduled to begin production on location in Louisiana later this month and will be distributed domestically by Warner Bros. Pictures, under its ongoing arrangement with Dark Castle.

Based on the graphic novel Bullet to the Head, written by Matz and illustrated by Colin Wilson, it tells the story of a New Orleans hitman (Stallone) and a New York City cop who form an alliance to bring down the killers of their respective partners.

Joel Silver, Chairman of Dark Castle Entertainment, previously produced the Stallone films “Demolition Man” and “Assassins.” He says, “Sylvester Stallone is an iconic action star the world over and I’m thrilled to be working with him again. I look forward to joining with IM Global and After Dark in bringing this exciting new story to the screen.”

Says IM Global CEO Stuart Ford, “Joel and his Dark Castle team are the perfect partners to help steer a project like this successfully forward and we’re delighted to have them onboard, as well as having Warner Bros. as the U.S. distribution home for the film.”

Silver’s previous creative collaborations with veteran director Hill include the box-office hit “48 Hours,” “Warriors” and HBO’s long-running “Tales from the Crypt.”

The new film, a Warner Bros. Pictures presentation, in association with Dark Castle Entertainment, IM Global and After Dark Films, also features rising star Sung Kang (“Fast Five,” “Ninja Assassin”) in a key supporting role. Additionally serving as producers will be Alexandra Milchan, Miles Millar, Alfred Gough, Kevin King-Templeton and Andrew Rona. Stuart Ford, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Deepak Nayar, Courtney Solomon, Allan Zeman and Steve Richards will executive produce

‘Brewster’s Millions’ Headed For Another Remake

brewsters millions

Matthew Sullivan and Michael Diliberti have been tapped by Warner Brothers to bring another adaptation of George Barr McCutcheon’s 1902 novel, ‘Brewster’s Millions,’ to the big screen according to The Hollywood Reporter.   This version of the story would be the eighth time this story has made it to the big screen, most recently being adapted into a film starring Richard Preyor and John Candy and directed by Walter Hill.

The story centers on a man who inherits $1 million from his rich grandfather.   A rich uncle leaves the young man $7 million upon his passing, but this inheritance has one stipulation.   The young man has only one year to spend every cent of his grandfather’s inheritance in order to obtain the $7 million left by the uncle.

Sullivan and Diliberti got the job penning the remake after their spec ‘Comic Con’ generated buzz.   That film about two geeky friends planning a heist during the annual event is in pre-production with Principato-Young set to produce.

There are no details yet for the duo’s version of ‘Brewster’s Millions,’ but I’m guessing with this whole inflation thing the title is sure to change to ‘Brewster’s Billions’ or just, plain ‘Brewster.’   We’ll let you know as soon as more details are uncovered.

Mickey Rourke on Fire, will Star in ‘St. Vincent’

mickeyrourkebh

Here’s the most popular scenario in Hollywood big shot studio executive offices…

Exec #1: “Hey, we’ve got this great new script, but we can’t figure out who to cast.”
Exec #2: “Oh, have I got the guy for you!”
Exec #1: “Really? Who?”
Exec #2: “Mickey Rourke!”
Exec #1: “Yeah, he’s perfect!”

Oh, fine… don’t get the wrong idea. I love Mickey and I’m absolutely thrilled he’s making a huge comeback, but it amazes me at the number of projects he’s suddenly being offered. The newest in this unbelievable string of castings is that Rourke will star in ‘St. Vincent’, written by Cameron Young and directed by Walter Hill (Johnny Handsome).

He’ll play a hit man who returns to New York to complete a botched hit. Masquerading as a priest, he finds himself hearing the confession of the man who he is targeting. — HR
