THE WARRIORS Come Out and Play-ay This Weekend Midnights at The Tivoli

THE WARRIORS screens this Friday and Saturday nights (June 6th and 7th) at midnight at the Tivoli Theater as part of their ‘Reel Late at the Tivoli’  Midnight series.

Walter Hill stylized 1979 modern urban-fantasy adventure THE WARRIORS has overcome the test of time and is now a cult classic – and not without a good reason. This action-packed movie, set in a stylish semi-futuristic version of 70s New York, is roller-coaster ride that never slows down for a second.

“The Warriors” are a gang that has its home in Coney Island. One night, Cyrus, the leader of the biggest gang in NYC, the Bronx-based “Grammercy Riffs” invites 9 delegates of each gang in NYC to a meeting hoping to establish peace & collaboration between gangs. During the meeting at the Bronx, Cyrus is murdered, and soon everyone blames the “Warriors”. Knowing they were framed for the killing by another gang, the “Warriors” must return to Coney Island before the cops or the members of the other gangs catch them. Just like in classic odysseys, the group must endure several obstacles as the many gangs of NY are trying to kill them.

THE WARRIORS is both thrilling and exciting and while not realistic or accurate (a gang of mimes !?!…the Baseball Furies !?), the gang sub-world of the movie is the perfect setting for this now legendary tale. The acting is remarkably good, considering the young age and lack of experience of those involved in the project. While every member of the “Warriors” is important for the movie, Michael Beck as Swan and James Remar as Ajax shine in their roles. David Patrick Kelly as Luther, member of an important rival gang also has a lot of great scenes, gets the best lines (“Warriors…come out and play-ay!”), and he makes the best of them.

The Tivoli Announces the Newest ‘Reel Late’ Midnight Series Line-Up

“Release the Kraken!…..at the Tivoli!”

An awesome line-up of midnight movies to be screened at The Tivoli with the announcement of the next wave of films for their “Reel Late at the Tivoli “program! It’s a great selection and the usual variety of cult standards and classics that draw the late night movie buff crowd.

If the new remake sucks, you can always see the original GODZILLA when it plays midnights at the Tivoli ant the end of this month.  We know the CLASH OF THE TITANS remake blew, but check out the amazing 1981 version on the big screen! JAWS on 4th of July weekend?!?! Just like on Amity Island!– I’m so there!

Reel Late at the Tivoli takes place every Friday and Saturday night and We Are Movie Geeks own Tom Stockman (that’s me!) is often there with custom trivia questions about the films and always has DVDs, posters, and other cool stuff to give away. Fantasy Cast: Who Should Play Luther in ‘The Warriors’ Remake

Tony Scott is the planned director for the remake of ‘The Warriors.’   To be set in LA, the film still looks to have the same, basic concept of the ’79 original.   A group of 10 gang members must get from one point to the other, while all the other gangs in the city are attempting to take them out.

The main villain of the ’79 film was Luther, played with devilish care by David Patrick Kelly.

And who can forget this standout moment of the film:

Who the hell can fill that man’s shoes?   Well, that is the question we submit to you on today’s edition of Fantasy Cast.   Who should play Luther in the remake of ‘The Warriors’?   The character, without a doubt, should be carried over to the remake, but the real question is who could possibly top or even match David Patrick Kelly’s original take?

James from Gordon and the Whale says the role should go to Sean Penn:

He’s got the chops, both acting-wise and chin-wise.   He’s definitely a name that could be attached to the film.   Of course, James snickered right after he mentioned this choice, and the general thought is there is no way in hell Penn would “lower” himself to play the villain of a ‘Warriors’ remake.
