Slasher Throwback FINAL SUMMER Teams Horror Movie Vets With St. Louis Actor Bishop Stevens

“I’m afraid there is no escape”

Cult horror stars Tom Atkins (NIGHT OF THE CREEPS, HALLOWEEN III) and Thom Mathews (RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, FRIDAY THE 13th Pt 6: JASON LIVES) are teaming up for the new slasher throwback thriller FINAL SUMMER for a 2022 release. One of Atkins and Mathews’ costars in FINAL SUMMER is St. Louis-based Bishop Stevens, the WCW Wrestler-turned-actor. Stevens trained with the legendary 8-time World Champion Harley Race before signing with World Championship Wrestling (WCW) under the name “THE ATOMIC DOGG”. The North St. Louis County-native Bishop has a number of good film acting roles under his belt now, including parts in GIRL ON THE THIRD FLOOR, NO GOOD HEROES (read my interview with that film’s director HERE), LOCKDOWN, and TV shows such as AMC’s The Walking Dead, FOX’s Empire, and NBC’s Chicago PD. Bishop has had the opportunity to work with such stars as Nicolas Cage, Selma Blair, Lobo Sebastian, Michael Pare’, Zazie Beetz, Colin Ford, Kevin Sizemore, Michael Beach, Kate Mara & Ellen Page. In addition to acting, Stevens is a motivational speaker and fitness enthusiast.

Check out the teaser trailer for FINAL SUMMER:

FINAL SUMMER is about the aftermath of a tragedy at a summer camp, when a group of camp counselors find themselves fighting for their lives against a masked killer.

More about FINAL SUMMER from POPHORROR:

August is the last month of summer. It marks the end of the blistering heat as we welcome the cold of night and the frost on our roofs, and the holiday season begins. Horror movies are usually big around October but genre films at any time of the year is a treat. Summer plays a bigger part in one’s nostalgia of no school, late nights with friends and vacations and even summer camp. Thoughts of summer camp bring up camp slasher movies. There are so many choices, but one we’re talking about today is Final Summer. The new camp slasher film from John Isberg (Daniel 2017), a heavy hitter in the film industry, has gathered a team of the best character actors ever to grace the screen. Starring Tom Atkins (Night Of The Creeps 1986), Thom Matthews (Friday the 13th part VI: Jason Lives 1986 – read), and Bishop Stevens (Bloodthirst 2021). These actors know horror and they know how to provide performances for their films in both small and leading roles. Tom and Thom may be veterans in the field, but Bishop has been showing that he’s a big—literally and figuratively—actor. The filming for Final Summer starts this month, and I can’t wait to see what unfolds from the teaser to the funding campaign hyping us up for what we can expect….

NIGHT OF THE CREEPS Midnights This Weekend at The Moolah

“What I’m going to need is your standard flame thrower”.

NIGHT OF THE CREEPS screens Midnights this weekend (March 9th and 10th) at The Moolah Theater and Lounge (3821 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63108) as part of  Destroy the Brain’s monthly Late Nite Grindhouse film series.

Writer/director Fred Dekker’s NIGHT OF THE CREEPS  is all about little, parasitic aliens that take over human bodies and turn them into deadly zombies. This is a big pain in the backside for Chris Romero (Jason Lively), who is finally getting a chance to woo Cynthia (Jill Whitlow), a girl he has fallen in love with. With gruff Detective Cameron (Tom Atkins) trying to figure out what’s going on as bodies start to, apparently, wander off on their own it’s not long until the living have to band together to keep the living dead at bay.

A cross between ’50s sci-fi B-movie, teen comedy and zombie flick, NIGHT OF THE CREEPS really does remain a hugely enjoyable little film that should be seen and appreciated by as many genre fans as possible. A lot of the movie may be wish-fulfilment stuff usually delivered by John Hughes back in the ’80s, but that doesn’t detract from the overall enjoyment.

Tom Atkins has never been more fun (his “thrill me” answering of the telephone just one small, enjoyable nuance from a selection of many), the rest of the young stars are good enough (Steve Marshall as the best buddy, J.C., strikes just the right balance between confident and irritating) and Jill Whitlow’s character is easy enough to grow fond of, making the lengths that Chris will go to to keep her safe all the more believable. Allan Kayser is an easy-to-hate douchebag named Brad, and there’s also a nice little Dick Miller cameo for fans to watch out for.

With a sharp script, many wonderful, individual moments and pacing that perfectly delivers a number of little, eerie moments before building up to an all-out battle of a finale, the movie delivers just the right mix of fun, thrills and overall entertainment. Fans of sci-fi and horror will enjoy the fact that all of the main characters are named after the likes of Raimi, Carpenter, Cronenberg, etc and the more eagle-eyed viewers should easily spot a piece of graffiti exclaiming “GO MONSTER SQUAD”. Don’t miss your chance to see NIGHT OF THE CREEPS on the big screen this weekend at The Moolah!

Critically panned and loathed by John Carpenter fans who were expecting another chapter in the saga of Laurie Strode vs. Michael Myers, HALLOWEEN III: SEASON OF THE WITCH (1982) was actually an attempt by Carpenter and partner Debra Hill to break out of the “Saga of the Shape” story and make the “Halloween” series a franchise that dealt with horror on October 31. It failed as a project, but what it did give us is a one-of-a-kind movie that’s pretty interesting in its own right. What other movie can you think of that tells a story about a Druid maskmaker plotting to murder millions of children on Halloween with a bizarre scheme involving computer chips, Stonehenge, killer robots, laser beams, black magic, and the hopes that all the children with the cursed masks will coincidentally gather around the TV set at an appointed time to watch a strobing commercial that triggers the device on the mask? The results of this are not quite clear, but the masks melt, the children’s heads disintegrate and hundreds of roaches, snakes, and other weird bugs emerge from the corpse. Mission accomplished.

‘Night of the Creeps’ Finally Getting DVD Release

night-of-the-creeps

Fred Dekker’s cult classic ‘Night of the Creeps’ is thought by many to be the catalyst for a whole lot of later-released alien invasion/zombie movies.   Most notably is ‘Slither,’ James Gunn’s 2006 film, which takes a whole lot of ideas first noticed in ‘Night of the Creeps’ and piles on the gore effects.

Despite the beloved nature of the 1986 film, however, it has yet to see a DVD release.   That is, until now, as Fred Dekker has answered all of our requests when we quote his movie saying ‘Thrill me!’.

Michael Felsher of Red Shirts Pictures was on a recent episode of the horror/internet talk radio show, Dead Pit Radio, where he made the announcement that Sony is officially releasing ‘Night of the Creeps’ on DVD this coming October.

What’s more, this is to be a special editon, original director’s ending and all.

Said Felsher: “It’s going to be the director’s cut with the original ending. We’re going to go balls to the wall with the special features on it.”

Horror fans all around the world are rejoicing on this day.   ‘Night of the Creeps’ has been long considered as a necessity in terms of a DVD release, but the only way any of us were able to view it on DVD were through illegal means.   Now, it’s legal.   Now, it’s official.   ‘Night of the Creeps’ on DVD is coming.
