Slasher Throwback FINAL SUMMER Teams Horror Movie Vets With St. Louis Actor Bishop Stevens

“I’m afraid there is no escape”

Cult horror stars Tom Atkins (NIGHT OF THE CREEPS, HALLOWEEN III) and Thom Mathews (RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, FRIDAY THE 13th Pt 6: JASON LIVES) are teaming up for the new slasher throwback thriller FINAL SUMMER for a 2022 release. One of Atkins and Mathews’ costars in FINAL SUMMER is St. Louis-based Bishop Stevens, the WCW Wrestler-turned-actor. Stevens trained with the legendary 8-time World Champion Harley Race before signing with World Championship Wrestling (WCW) under the name “THE ATOMIC DOGG”. The North St. Louis County-native Bishop has a number of good film acting roles under his belt now, including parts in GIRL ON THE THIRD FLOOR, NO GOOD HEROES (read my interview with that film’s director HERE), LOCKDOWN, and TV shows such as AMC’s The Walking Dead, FOX’s Empire, and NBC’s Chicago PD. Bishop has had the opportunity to work with such stars as Nicolas Cage, Selma Blair, Lobo Sebastian, Michael Pare’, Zazie Beetz, Colin Ford, Kevin Sizemore, Michael Beach, Kate Mara & Ellen Page. In addition to acting, Stevens is a motivational speaker and fitness enthusiast.

FINAL SUMMER is about the aftermath of a tragedy at a summer camp, when a group of camp counselors find themselves fighting for their lives against a masked killer.

More about FINAL SUMMER from POPHORROR:

August is the last month of summer. It marks the end of the blistering heat as we welcome the cold of night and the frost on our roofs, and the holiday season begins. Horror movies are usually big around October but genre films at any time of the year is a treat. Summer plays a bigger part in one’s nostalgia of no school, late nights with friends and vacations and even summer camp. Thoughts of summer camp bring up camp slasher movies. There are so many choices, but one we’re talking about today is Final Summer. The new camp slasher film from John Isberg (Daniel 2017), a heavy hitter in the film industry, has gathered a team of the best character actors ever to grace the screen. Starring Tom Atkins (Night Of The Creeps 1986), Thom Matthews (Friday the 13th part VI: Jason Lives 1986 – read), and Bishop Stevens (Bloodthirst 2021). These actors know horror and they know how to provide performances for their films in both small and leading roles. Tom and Thom may be veterans in the field, but Bishop has been showing that he’s a big—literally and figuratively—actor. The filming for Final Summer starts this month, and I can’t wait to see what unfolds from the teaser to the funding campaign hyping us up for what we can expect….

JASON LIVES! – FRIDAY THE 13th Pt. VI Midnights This Weekend at The Moolah

“The only way to kill Jason is to send him back to his original resting place where he drowned in 1957.”

JASON LIVES! – FRIDAY THE 13th Pt. VI screens Midnights this weekend (October 13th and 14th) at The Moolah Theater and Lounge (3821 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63108) as part of  Destroy the Brain’s monthly Late Nite Grindhouse film series.

By the summer of ’86, The Friday the 13th franchise  was getting a bit tired, so it’s obvious that the makers of JASON LIVES – FRIDAY THE 13th Pt. VI  tried to spice things up and succeeded. It’s one of the very best of the series. .

A grown up Tommy (now played by Thom Mathews) goes to the cemetery to destroy Jason’s corpse once and for all.  The horror gods aren’t too thrilled about that, so when Tommy rams a spear through Jason’s chest, lightning crashes down and brings Jason back to life Frankenstein-style (Loved Tommy’s pal’s line “My heart can’t take much more of this!”) and ready to kill.  Tommy runs to the police, but when he tells them about Jason they think he’s just a maniac trying to stir up trouble and throw him in jail.  Soon the bodies start piling up (more yuppies than teens this time).

The pace of JASON LIVES – FRIDAY THE 13th Pt. VI is lightning fast, the kills are creative and bloody, the photography is way better than it should be for a cheap horror movie, there’s a couple of cool Alice Cooper songs, the humor is actually humorous rather than forced, the acting is decent and the main gal (Jennifer Cooke) may the hottest female of the entire series.  JASON LIVES – FRIDAY THE 13th Pt. VI  is a light-hearted, blood-drenched slasher film that’s fun to watch and that’s what Late Nite Grindhouse is all about.
