WILL & HARPER Trailer Stars Will Ferrell and Harper Steele – See The Netflix Documentary September 27

The official trailer and poster for the highly anticipated Sundance hit documentary film WILL & HARPER debut today.

Will Ferrell and his close friend, former head writer at SNL, Harper Steele embark on a cross-country road trip together after Harper comes out as a trans woman in the documentary film, WILL & HARPER. In select cinemas this September and on Netflix September 27. It also features Seth Meyers, Tina Fey, Kristen Wiig, Colin Jost, Will Forte, Molly Shannon, Tim Meadows, Paula Pell.

Three years ago, Will Ferrell was filming a movie when he received a most surprising email: his dear friend of nearly 30 years was coming out to him as a trans woman.

That friend was Harper Steele, a writer he met on his first day at Saturday Night Live back in 1995. From that fateful first meeting in the halls of 30 Rock, Will knew he had found a match made in comedy, and their friendship and creative partnership would only continue to grow over the next 3 decades.

In this intimate, honest, and heartfelt documentary, Will and Harper hit the open road together to process this new stage of their friendship and reintroduce Harper to the country that she loves – this time, as herself. Over 16 days, the two drive from New York to LA, visiting stops that are meaningful to them, to their friendship, and to America. Through laughter, tears, and many cans of Pringles, they push past their comfort zones as they re-examine their relationships to these spaces, and to each other, in this new light.

MEAN GIRLS (2024) – Review

Avantika plays Karen Shetty, Angourie Rice plays Cady Heron, Renee Rapp plays Regina George and Bebe Wood plays Gretchen Wieners in Mean Girls from Paramount Pictures. Photo: Jojo Whilden/Paramount © 2023 Paramount Pictures.

Get ready for another “full circle film”, an IP (intellectual property) that began in one medium, was adapted to another, and then returns to that original medium. One of the more recent Broadway trends, along with the “jukebox musical”, has been taking an often beloved feature film and adapting it into a big splashy stage musical. And when they’re big hits, then bring the musical take to the big screen. Back in 2005, THE PRODUCERS did the big “whip-around” when the musical based on the 1967 Oscar-winning classic played (briefly) at the multiplex. A couple of years later saw the tune-filled return of HAIRSPRAY. Just a few weeks ago (it’s still playing in many markets) THE COLOR PURPLE did much the same, although it may be more of a “full-square” as it began as a book that became a 1985 Spielberg epic. As the TV hosts might say, “On a much lighter note”, we’ve got a big circle all within the 21st century as an adored (and endlessly quoted) cult comedy from way back in 2004 is now filling the world’s movie theatres with those singin’ and dancin’ divas, the MEAN GIRLS.

In the first of many “tweaks,” we first meet the misfit duo of North Shore High, Janis (Aluli’i Cravalho) and Damian (Jaquel Spivey), who serve as the story’s guide and narrators. Their garage/TikTok studio door opens up to the wilds of Kenya where teenager Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) is told by her wildlife-researcher mom (Jenna Fischer) that her homeschooling is done. They’re moving back to the States, where Cady will be part of the aforementioned school’s student body. Principal Duvall (Tim Meadows) escorts her to her first class, Calculus taught by Ms. Norbury (Tina Fey). Seems that Mama Heron has taught Cady well, but she’s not prepared for the battlezone AKA the school cafeteria. Luckily Janis and Damian take her under “their wings” and point out the different “social groups” (“burn-outs”, “goths”, etc.). Oh, and Cady is warned about the “queens” known as “the Plastics”. The trio consists of gorgeous, dim Karen (Avantika), insecure “lackey/sidekick” Gretchen (Bebe Woods), and their “leader’ the imposing goddess Regina George (Renee Rapp). Surprisingly she welcomes the new, “girl from an exotic land” Cady, and puts her in the runnings as a ‘fourth wheel”. Damian and Janis (who also has a history with Regina) encourage her to join and give them “the dirt” on the group. But things take a drastic turn when Cady becomes smitten with hunky Aaron (Christopher Briney), who just happens to be Regina’s ex (gasp). What will happen when Regina finds out? Cady survived the carnivores of Africa, but can she stand a chance against the sharpened talons of Ms. George?

The young cast expertly hits all the comedic and melodic beats of this musical fable. Rice is the story’s focus and quickly has the audience’s support as the wide-eyed innocent Cady. Perhaps because she’s the film’s heroine she doesn’t have as much opportunity to “cut loose”, although we get a hint of her range when Cady goes “dark”. The much “showier” role is the fierce and fiery (literally) Janis given an energetic power by Cravalho, perhaps best known as the voice of Disney princess Moana. With her third-act retelling of a childhood trauma, she truly ignites the screen. Her rival in many aspects of Cady’s character arc is Rapp as the sadistic “queen B” Regina whose sly seductive smile masks her cruel nature. At times she seems to be a bored cat casually taunting a mouse in its clutches, as she manipulates everyone into being pawns in her schemes. Rapp catutes that camp villainy and proves to be a most compelling crooner. Wood elicits lots of empathy as the needy, over-eager-to-please Gretchen while Avantika scores loads of laughs as the bubble-brained Karen, bouncing off the screen in the big Halloween number. Spivey brings lots of energetic charm to the cliche role of flamboyant BFF supporter Damien, while Birney is the required “eye candy” as the affable, but somewhat bland Aaron. But for many, the movie’s big highlight is the return of original faculty members Fey and Meadows who seem to have been “frozen in time” ( the old Captain America “pause”) as Norbury and Duvall, effortlessly hilarious in their too, too brief bits of screen time, making us wish that two other newbies, but also comedy vets, Jon Hamm and Fischer were given chances to shine. Luckily Busy Phillips picks up some of the “slack” as Regina’s too accommodating, wistful mother.

This reimagining is helmed by the first-time feature film directing team of Samantha Jayne and Arturo Perez Jr., who use several interesting techniques to “open up” the “Broadway staging’, giving the plot a sense of urgency I like the opening number’s quick location transitions), They’re striving to give this remake its own energy and style, though many storybeats feel lifted right from the 2004 original. But unlike that version, the kids must deal with social media which gets an exhausting couple of zippy montages. Ditto for many of the bouncy dance numbers especially an elaboration of the “school is a jungle” sequence from the first flick, with the “beasts” giving Regina her invisible “walkway”. Aside from those big numbers, the power ballads”, and the phone videos and memes, is this one an improvement over the now twenty-year-old gem? Not especially, but the script and setup by Ms. Fey endures and stands the “test of time”. It’s a very different “take” that should engage those “theatre geeks” (just hope that your multiplex’s sound system is up to it, as ours “garbled” most of the lyrics so it’s impossible to judge the quality of the tunes), but it won’t replace that well-worn disc (or maybe you still have a tape) of those marvelous but often malicious MEAN GIRLS.

Documentary About Improv Guru Del Close – FOR MADMEN ONLY Available Now on Apple TV and Altavod

Utopia is pleased to announce that FOR MADMEN ONLY, a feature documentary that places improv guru Del Close front and center, is set for release on Altavod & Apple TV in the USA and Canada on July 27th, 2021. Here’s the trailer:

Synopsis: Comedy guru Del Close, mentor to everyone from Bill Murray to Tina Fey, sets out to write his autobiography for DC Comics. As he leads us through sewers, mental wards, and his peculiar talent for making everyone famous but himself, Close emerges as a personification of the creative impulse itself. He’s a muse with BO and dirty needles, offering transcendence despite (or because of) the trail of wreckage behind him.

In this at once hilarious and poignant look at the life of the godfather of improv comedy, Del Close, Festival alum Heather Ross (Girls on The Wall)  tracks the trailblazer from “human torch” sideshow act to his influential and contentious rise at The Second City, mentoring such greats as Bill Murray, John Candy, and Tina Fey, among many others. Inspired by his semi-autobiographical DC Comics anthology Wasteland, the film delves into the inner workings of Close’s wacky mind through inspired reenactments, archival clips, and interviews with such devotees as Bob Odenkirk, Tim Meadows, and Adam McKay. The result is a lively, multi-layered picture of a man and his mission, riding on the edges of genius and despair, creativity, and insanity.

Heather Ross said of her second feature documentary, “We knew that to make the definitive movie about this icon/unknown, we would need to take the same kind of creative risks that he was famous for.  As someone known for breaking down genres and experimenting with form—not to mention playing fast and loose with the truth – we decided to apply the same ideas to our film and try to break new ground with the documentary genre. This resulted in constructing a set of scenes imagining the creative process behind WASTELAND, Del’s comic book autobiography.”

Danielle DiGiacomo, Head of Content for Utopia, said, “For Madmen Only is a singular film reflecting a singular man – a creative and joyful exploration of one of the lesser sung heroes in all of comedy; we at Utopia can’t wait for viewers to be taken on a much needed escape into hilarity and genius.”

FOR MADMEN ONLY premieres on Altavod & Apple TV on July 27th, 2021, with special events and screenings to be announced. Pre-Order the film HERE

POPSTAR: NEVER STOP NEVER STOPPING – Review

popstar

Last week saw the wide release of one of the year’s best documentaries, WEINER. Through very funny (and tragic at times) everything in this political profile is real (much to the title subject’s embarrassment). So, let’s turn the tables this week with a fictional comedy, shot and edited as though it’s a documentary. Yes, it’s another example of the hybrid made so popular by triple threat Christopher Guest (it’s almost as though he invented it), the “mock-umentary”. All the way back in 1984, Guest (with director Rob Reiner) torpedoed the serious film format with the look at a fictitious heavy metal band in THIS IS SPINAL TAP (later he, as actor/writer/director, would take on 60’s folk music with A MIGHTY WIND). Happily a current group of satirists have decided that those music styles are not the only ones ripe for ridicule (rap got some ribbing in 1993’s CB4). With the recent concert docs on Justin Beiber and One Direction, the talented trio known as the Lonely Island (Andy Samberg, Avika Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone) take aim at “bubble gum” idols and icons with POPSTAR: NEVER STOP NEVER STOPPING.
The “popstar” in the title is the “artist currently known as” Conner4Real (Samberg). The film quickly fills us in on his back story. He originally rose to fame as part of the much adored hip-hop “boy band” he formed with his childhood chums Owen (Taccone) and Lawrence (Schaffer), the Style Boyz. Conner seemed to be the breakout star of the team which led to a mid-concert smack-down with Lawrence. Conner would become a solo act (joined by Owen as his DJ), while Lawrence became a bitter farmer in the wilds of Colorado. Sold-out concerts and best-selling CDs elevated Conner to the rank of pop superstar. He’s managed by “old school” mentor Harry (Tim Meadows) and hard-driving publicist Paula (Sarah Silverman). They’re all prepared for the release of Conner’s new collection of hits, one that will break sales records set by his previous works. But things don’t work out ( a real understatement). Reviews are scathing, sales are limp, and so, desperate measures are taken in order to “course-correct” Conner’s career. Unfortunately each new move leads to bigger disasters, from a “synergy” alliance with a household appliance conglomerate to the hasty addition of a hot opening act for the sagging arena concert tour, the edgy hard-core rapper Hunter the Hungry (Chris Redd). Nothing seems to work, not even Conner’s tabloid-fodder romance with YA movie star Ashley (Imogen Poots). Will this doc become the chronicle of a rapidly fading and falling star?

Samberg leads this pack of comedy pros like a decorated general guiding his troops to victory against the many lackluster recent comedies (mainly two big studio efforts from a couple of weeks ago). Though Conner can be arrogant and obnoxious, with an unbridled ego, the superb Mr. S makes us care about him and even hope for him to triumph despite himself. He truly throws himself into every humiliation with a joyful energetic abandon. Happily his two Island pals are also up to the task. Taccone is an endearing stooge/lackey, trying and failing to hold on to his dignity. Schaffer is a surly delight as the angry and frustrated third wheel, particularly as he rants while displaying his crude wood carvings that adorn his dismal cabin. Fortunately the film is filled with lots of alumni from Sandberg’s alma mater, namely the Not Ready for Prime Time Players from TV’s Saturday Night Live. Meadows is endearing as the put-upon ego wrangler of Conner. Silverman is tough and focused with a sharp sarcastic streak. Maya Rudolph is terrific as an up-tight corporate queen as is Bill Hader as a laconic “roadie”. The real scene stealer may be the group of comic actors led by the snarky Will Arnett in a savage take-off of a popular “viral video”-inspired TV staple. This is a parody that truly draws blood, exposing certain  fringe media “reporters” as screeching sadistic hyenas. They’re the inspired icing on an already tasty confection.
Taccone have Schaffer have helmed big screen comedy features before (MACGRUBER and THE WATCH respectively), but working on the script they co-wrote with Sandberg, they have reached new comic heights. Making light of pop excess may seem like “shooting fish in a barrel”, but the level of wit and invention is quite startling. The concert footage and the music videos (“Equal Rights” works on so many levels) are convincing recreations. The actors are mixed superbly with “talking-head testimonials” from real music stars (these folks are truly good sports). Yes, the film really earns it’s “R” rating for some excessive language, drug use (with blunts replacing martinis), and a crude but clever bit involving a limo ride, but the directors keep the pacing tight with the film clocking in at just under 90 minutes (hear that, Apatow?). There is that dreaded “lull” at the one hour mark, but the plot bounces back for a very satisfying finale’. This is a rebuttal to the 60’s pop standard, “There Ain’t no Cure For the Summertime Blues”. Those seeking immediate relief should seek out POPSTAR: NEVER STOP NEVER STOPPING (for laughter lasting more than 12 hours, please consult a physician).

New FREAK DANCE Trailer

“When pop comes to lock, when you’re breakin’ on the make, sometimes you got to take a chance and dance.”-Asteroid

Make no mistake, FREAK DANCE is a straight-up musical—a brilliant, musical comedy with dance numbers that rival the very films they are parodying. Adapted by Upright Citizens Brigade co-founder, Matt Besser, from the stage show that ran for more than a year at the UCB Theatre, the comedy skips cheap reference humor and goes right for absurdity.

FREAK DANCE tells the story of Cocolonia, a spoiled rich girl who just wants to dance, so she sets out to join the ranks of some local street dancers. Little does she know that this will ultimately involve her in an epic battle of good and evil between two warring dance troupes. Besser and Neil Mahoney have created a sure to be cult classic featuring a cast of new comedic actors and fellow UCB Theatre founders Amy Poehler, Matt Walsh, Ian Roberts and Horatio Sanz.
