Review: THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE

Boy, do I like magic! If you do too, then you are in for a treat!

Balthazar (Nicolas Cage) was one of three apprentices to the legendary Merlin, along with Horvath (Alfred Molina). With corruption and greed creeping through their apprentice circle, Balthazar must find the chosen child who will one day beat Morgana, a very powerful and dark sorcerer. After a great deal of time, he finds Dave (Jay Baruchel), a geeky physics buff who is socially impaired. Now Dave must decide whether to take on the great task of becoming Balthazar’s apprentice and learning what he needs to know to beat Morgana and save the world.

Disney, you did it again! This movie was whimsical and majestic. Baruchel has such a likability factor. He’s a real person, rather than some Abercrombie model, and it gives the movie more appeal. I think it’s great for kids to be able to look at a kid like them in a film, who then becomes the hero at the end, rather than some plastic actor you can’t relate to. It was nice to see a film where he gets to be the hero in the end. Plus, the kid cracks me up! Molina plays the villain Horvath very well. His performance was absolutely incredible.

Cage was more tolerable than normal. The problem I have with Cage is that no matter what the role, no matter how you dress him up, he is still Nicolas Cage. He only plays a part one way… just in a different environment and costume. I am still convinced that almost every movie that he has ever been in would be better if they replaced him… Sorry Cage lovers… I’m sure I am going to make people mad with that one.

The special effects were neat to watch. They did a good job of keeping them fun to look at. Sure, they weren’t all believable, but they fit the film. The throw backs to Fantasia were really neat too! There is a cool scene that was significantly influenced from the animated film. Plus, if you stay til the end of the credits you will see Mickey Mouse’s hat from Fantasia… or Merlin’s hat… hmmm…

I don’t want to spoil too much, so I will leave you with this… Go see this film. Bring the family if you’d like. Either way, you won’t be disappointed!

The Eagle Has Landed on THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE

In this new clip from THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE, “The Eagle has Landed,” sorcerer Balthazar Blake always arrives in style–this time on the back of a giant eagle!

Wow… that’s a lot of CGI!

Synopsis:

Balthazar Blake (NICOLAS CAGE) is a master sorcerer in modern-day Manhattan trying to defend the city from his arch-nemesis, Maxim Horvath (ALFRED MOLINA). Balthazar can’t do it alone, so he recruits Dave Stutler (JAY BARUCHEL), a seemingly average guy who demonstrates hidden potential, as his reluctant protege. The sorcerer gives his unwilling accomplice a crash course in the art and science of magic, and together, these unlikely partners work to stop the forces of darkness. It’ll take all the courage Dave can muster to survive his training, save the city and get the girl as he becomes THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE.

From Walt Disney Studios, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Jon Turteltaub, THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE will appear  in theaters on July 14, 2010.

As he prepares for a battle against the forces of darkness in modern-day Manhattan, Dave finds it is going to take all of the courage he can muster to survive his training, save the city and get the girl as he becomes THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE.

THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE and the Coolest FANTASIA Scene Ever

Director Jon Turtletaub and producer Jerry Bruckheimer enthusiastically talk on the huge influence by Disney’s masterpiece FANTASIA in the dancing broom/mop scene from the upcoming THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE.

“This is crazy… but, it is fun!” Hellz ya it is! The fact that Disney is selling the film by focusing on the FANTASIA comparison will help those still on the fence about it.

The film’s synopsis:

Walt Disney Studios, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Jon Turteltaub, the creators of the “National Treasure” franchise, present THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE — an innovative and epic comedy adventure about a sorcerer and his hapless apprentice who are swept into the center of an ancient conflict between good and evil. Balthazar Blake (NICOLAS CAGE) is a master sorcerer in modern-day Manhattan trying to defend the city from his arch-nemesis, Maxim Horvath (ALFRED MOLINA). Balthazar can’t do it alone, so he recruits Dave Stutler (JAY BARUCHEL), a seemingly average guy who demonstrates hidden potential, as his reluctant protégé. It’ll take all the courage Dave can muster to survive his training, save the city and get the girl as he becomes THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE.

New THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE Posters

Disney has announced that everyday this week they will release a new character poster for Jon Turteltaub’s (NATIONAL TREASURE) THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE . May I present “The Wizard” Sun Lok.

Sun Lok “The Wizard” (Gregory Woo) is an ancient, but perpetually young, Chinese sorcerer and Morganian. When he’s unlocked from his Grimhold by Horvath, Sun Lok wreaks havoc in Chinatown during a lively festival by materializing a fearsome fire-breathing dragon. “Sun Lok has been in a little container for thousands and thousands of years, and when he’s let out, he’s really, really angry,” says Woo.

And #2. “The Villain:

Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina) was, along with Balthazar Blake and Veronica, a disciple of Merlin and a force of good more than a thousand years ago. But their mutual love for Veronica split the colleagues apart and Horvath has instead become an ally of the wicked Morgana, who murdered Merlin and is seeking to conquer the world with her minions. He and Balthazar have battled through the ages, finally bringing their conflict to modern-day New York City.

In The SORCERER’S APPRENTICE, Horvath’s mission is world domination,” says Molina. “Balthazar and Horvath have a rivalry that’s gone on for millennia. Balthazar is maintaining the Merlinean standard of magic as a power that’s used for the benefit of mankind. Horvath is the leader of the Morganians, who take the very different view that magic should be used to subjugate humans. That’s the struggle between good as personified by Nic Cage’s character, and evil as personified by mine. Horvath is a rather smart, debonair, Edwardian villain in the classic tradition of suave bad guys, well dressed and charming, but deadly.

Nicolas Cage’s hair is so epic.   He could fight wars with that hair.   Thank God the Disney studio sees this and decided he would make the perfect choice for the lead role in their new, live-action SORCERER’S APPRENTICE movie.   Earlier this morning, we hit you with the film’s first trailer.   Now, courtesy of the fine folks at Disney, we have these wonderous, high def stills.   Open them wide and gawk at every, single follicle that sprouts from that Nic Cage head.

THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICE Trailer!

Apprent

This evening hosts the premiere of the first trailer for the film The SORCERER’S APPRENTICE. My thoughts? Nic Cage has awesome hair yet again, Alfred Molina looks to be an outstanding villain, Jay Baruchel should be a joy and well, I think this looks like a fun summer film, which it is. The film is directed by Jon Turteltaub, who previously directed Cage in the NATIONAL TREASURE films and also helmed classics such as COOL RUNNINGS and 3 NINJAS. The script is penned by Carlo Bernard and Matt Lopez, both of whom haven’t done anything spectacular. I will say that I am digging the vibe of the film. I saw a brief reference to the original story near the end of the trailer with the magical mops and pails. Good times! The plot synopsis for the film is as follows:

An average college student (Jay Baruchel) is reluctantly recruited to work for a sorcerer (Nicolas Cage), who gives him a crash course in the art and science of magic to prepare him for a battle against the forces of darkness in modern Manhattan.

The kind folks over at Apple are hosting an HD version of the trailer, so follow the screenie and check it out!
