Your Weekly Source for the Newest Releases to Blu-Ray

Perhaps the most anticipated release this week is Rodrigo Cortes’ BURIED, a groundbreaking indie thriller starring Ryan Reynolds who wakes up to find himself buried alive, but much more is at play in this ingenious film. David Michod’s ANIMAL KINGDOM — about a 17-year old coping with life in a criminal family —  was also a festival favorite on the indie scene; FREAKONOMICS is an anthology from six innovative documentary filmmakers that explores the hidden side of everything; and two classics from director Samuel Fuller — NAKED KISS, a film noir about a prostitute who finds redemption; and SHOCK CORRIDOR, about a journalist who commits himself to a mental institution to solve a strange murder — get the Blu-Ray treatment from Criterion Collection.

John Curran’s STONE — starring Edward Norton and Robert DeNiro — and John Luessenhop’s TAKERS — an urban crime drama — both hope for better DVD sales than they received at the box office. Writer-director Ben Wheatley’s British crime-dramedy wants to catch your private home-viewing eye; Samuel Moaz’s critically-acclaimed LEBANON — about a single tank and parachute platoon in the first Lebanese War — releases on both Blu-Ray and DVD; while Roger Corman sees five more of his sci-fi/cult classics dug up and dusted off for a whole new generation to enjoy on DVD.

New STONE Trailer Stars DeNiro, Norton & Jovovich

Courtesy of Apple comes the new trailer for STONE starring Edward Norton and Robert DeNiro.

This is gonna be good. Norton and DeNiro together! Norton is at his very best when he has an equally talented co-star to play off of, like he did with Richard Gere in PRIMAL FEAR. I love that movie!

Synopsis:

Academy Award winner Robert De Niro and Oscar nominee Edward Norton deliver powerful performances as a seasoned corrections official and a scheming inmate whose lives become dangerously intertwined in Stone, a thought-provoking drama directed by John Curran (The Painted Veil, We Don’t Live Here Anymore) and written by Angus McLachlan (Junebug).

As parole officer Jack Mabry (De Niro) counts the days toward a quiet retirement, he is asked to review the case of Gerald “Stone” Creeson (Norton), in prison for covering up the murder of his grandparents with a fire. Now eligible for early release, Stone needs to convince Jack he has reformed, but his attempts to influence the older man’s decision have profound and unexpected effects on them both. Stone skillfully weaves together the parallel journeys of two men grappling with dark impulses, as the line between lawman and lawbreaker becomes precariously thin.

The film’s superb ensemble features Milla Jovovich (The Fifth Element) as Lucetta, Stone’s sexy, casually amoral wife, and Golden Globe® winner Frances Conroy (Six Feet Under) as Madylyn, Jack’s devout, long-suffering spouse. Set against the quiet desperation of an economically ravaged community and the stifling brutality of a maximum security prison, this tale of passion, betrayal and corruption examines the fractured lives of two volatile men breaking from their troubled pasts to face uncertain futures.

STONE will be in select theaters on October 8, 2010. Visit the film’s official site here.

Edward Norton in STONE Trailer

Have you seen the trailer for this dark prison movie with Edward Norton, Milla Jovovich, and Robert DeNiro titled STONE? Aaaaaaaghhhhh! FilmSchoolRejects has this preview posted on their site. I’m just totally creeped out by Edward Norton and his corn rows. But beware, if you have little ones around, please send them out of the room. The is the R-rated, red-band trailer.

The film stars Oscar-winner Robert De Niro (RAGING BULL), Oscar-nominee Edward Norton (FIGHT CLUB, AMERICAN HISTORY X), Milla Jovovich (RESIDENT EVIL) and Golden Globe-winner Frances Conroy ( HBO’s “Six Feet Under”).

Synopsis:

John Curran (THE PAINTED VEIL) directs Angus MacLachlan’s (Junebug) script about a convicted arsonist (Norton) who looks to manipulate a parole officer (De Niro) into a plan to secure his parole by placing his beautiful wife (Jovovich) in the lawman’s path.

Overture Films is distributing STONE.  The film is financed by Mimran Schur Pictures and Millennium Films and produced by David Mimran, Jordan Schur and Holly Wiersma with Avi Lerner, Danny Dimbort and Trevor Short serving as executive producers.

STONE is slated for a 2010 release later this year. Sometime in the Fall would be the way to go, but who knows.

Norton and De Niro Reteaming for ‘Stone’

score

‘The Score’ was one of those films that had everything going for it, but completely failed to deliver when all was said and done.   Nonetheless, Robert De Niro and Edward Norton are reteaming, as they are both set to star in ‘Stone.’

Directed by John Curran (‘The Painted Veil’), ‘Stone’ is an adaptation of the stage play written by Angust MacLachlan.   MacLachlan’s last endeavor into screenwriting came with ‘Junebug,’ which resulted in an Academy Award nomination for supporting actress, Amy Adams.

‘Stone’ begins filming in Pittsburgh next month.
