Your Weekly Source for the Newest Releases to Blu-Ray

Perhaps the most anticipated release this week is Rodrigo Cortes’ BURIED, a groundbreaking indie thriller starring Ryan Reynolds who wakes up to find himself buried alive, but much more is at play in this ingenious film. David Michod’s ANIMAL KINGDOM — about a 17-year old coping with life in a criminal family —  was also a festival favorite on the indie scene; FREAKONOMICS is an anthology from six innovative documentary filmmakers that explores the hidden side of everything; and two classics from director Samuel Fuller — NAKED KISS, a film noir about a prostitute who finds redemption; and SHOCK CORRIDOR, about a journalist who commits himself to a mental institution to solve a strange murder — get the Blu-Ray treatment from Criterion Collection.

John Curran’s STONE — starring Edward Norton and Robert DeNiro — and John Luessenhop’s TAKERS — an urban crime drama — both hope for better DVD sales than they received at the box office. Writer-director Ben Wheatley’s British crime-dramedy wants to catch your private home-viewing eye; Samuel Moaz’s critically-acclaimed LEBANON — about a single tank and parachute platoon in the first Lebanese War — releases on both Blu-Ray and DVD; while Roger Corman sees five more of his sci-fi/cult classics dug up and dusted off for a whole new generation to enjoy on DVD.

Ryan Reynolds gets BURIED in this Teaser Trailer

Ryan Reynolds has made us laugh, shocked us and even made us cringe a time or two, but this go ’round he’s determined to freak us all out. The little indie flick that could, a favorite at Sundance, BURIED stars Ryan Reynolds in a film about the most primal yet frightening fears shared my many of us… fears of the dark and enclosed spaces, loss of control and the overwhelming worst of them all… the fear of the unknown. With that, BURIED is a film that appears to be scaring the heck out of people in an otherwise simplistic way, by sticking Ryan Reynolds in a coffin, buried alive. As the audience, we get the privilege of experiencing that terror with him, crammed into the same tiny coffin, struggling for air and a grasp on our sanity. BURIED hits theaters on October 8, 2010. Check out the teaser trailer below, if you dare…

Sundance 2010 Preview: BURIED

94 minutes of watching Ryan Reynolds trapped in a coffin.  To some, this might sound like some sort of strange torture technique.  To us, this sounds like an awesome premise for a suspenseful and even emotional movie.  The early buzz on BURIED is that it is a highly intense film that leaves your claustrophobic inner child wanting to rush to the bright lobby of the theater.  Reynolds is a very gifted actor, and it seems like it is dramatic roles like this that are sure to have him quickly breaking from the comedic and comic book roles he’s been handling until now.

Official synopsis:

Paul Conroy (Ryan Reynolds) is a U.S. citizen working as a contract driver in Iraq. After a swift and sudden attack on his convoy, he awakens to find himself buried alive inside a coffin with nothing more than a lighter, a cell phone, and little memory of how he ended up there. Faced with limited oxygen and unlimited panic, Paul finds himself in a tension-filled race against time to escape this claustrophobic deathtrap before it’s too late.

If the sheer logistics of this premise are enough to make your head hurt, rest assured that director Rodrigo Cortés tackles these issues with relative ease, aided a great deal by a superbly convincing performance by Reynolds, the lone on-screen actor in the film. The result is a gripping and suspenseful thriller that will leave you gasping for air until the very end.

BURIED plays at the following times:

Saturday, January 23rd at 11:30 PM at the Library Center Theatre in Park City
Sunday, January 24th at 12:00 PM at the Broadway Centre Cinemas VI in Salt Lake City
Wednesday, January 27th at 11:30 AM at the Prospector Square Theater in Park City

Official Poster for BURIED Released

It was only recently that I first heard about BURIED, a film starring Ryan Reynolds as a US contractor in Iraq who, after an attack by Iraqies, wakes up to find himself buried alive with nothing at his side but a lighter and a cell phone.   Now, the film has been announced as one of the films to premiere at Park City at Midnight, the genre leg of Sundance 2010.   Today, courtesy of Quiet Earth, we have the film’s official poster, which you can find above.

Also, we have two poster designs for the film that didn’t quite make the cut.

Check these out:

I, personally, have to express my appreciation for the second design above.   It might not be an appropriate poster for the film, but it would certainly look good hanging on my wall.   The first scrapped design above is okay, but it’s too comical.   It is almost as if the designers were going for a Hitchcock feel but failed.   The actual poster is okay, as well, but it makes the film look more like a horror film than anything.

What do you think?   Which poster do you like the most of these three?   Are you excited to spend 90 minutes in a coffin with Ryan Reynolds?   Let us know by throwing us a comment in the section below.

No screen dates or times have been announced for BURIED’s premiere at Park City at Midnight, but I’m sure it will be one of the films we cover while we’re out there.

First Look at a ‘Buried’ Ryan Reynolds

buried

Personally, I have to give credit to any actor or actress who shoots a scene in which they are buried alive.   Being partially claustrophobic, I can’t say I’m super-excited to see ‘Buried,’ the new thriller starring Ryan Reynolds and directed by first-time feature film director, Rodrigo Cortes.   Even this new image, the first, from the film makes me want to look away from my monitor to get my bearings.

Reynolds plays a US contractor in Iraq, who, after an attack by Iraqi forces, finds himself buried alive.   With only a cell phone and a lighter, he tries to find a way out of his new predicament before his air gives out.   Judging from some of the script reviews out there, this one is both going to be intense and highly emotional, all the while spending much of its time inside the coffin with Reynolds’ character.

Along with the above shot from the movie, Twitch also released this behind-the-scenes still.

Judging from the battered state of Reynold’s forehead, I’m guessing he doesn’t spend the entire movie laying on his back hoping someone answers his the phone.

‘Buried’ is due for release sometime in 2010.
