‘The Green Hornet’ Begins Principal Photography

Shooting has officially begun on the Seth Rogen-starring, Michel Gondry-directed, Stephen Chow-nothing ‘Green Hornet’ adaptation.  Production begins on the heels of the news the film would be getting pushed back from its original release date of July 7th, 2010.  The film will now be bowing in theaters on December 17th instead, and, according to Rogen, this will give the people behind the film plenty of room to breath and make the best movie they can.

Jay Chou has filled the role of Kato left vacant by the departing Stephen Chow.  Chow moved on from the project officially in the middle of July, though his connection with the film was flimsy at best considering the way Rogen explained it when we spoke to him in March.  Chou is an actor/pop star from Taiwan, and he enters a cast that includes Rogen, Cameron Diaz, Edward James Olmos and Tom Wilkinson.  Nicolas Cage is rumoured to have a part in the film, as well, though nothing has been confirmed.

Seth Rogen scoops on ‘Green Hornet’

So, we all already know that Michel Gondry is set to direct, but what we didn’t know is that Stephen Chow might not be in the film after all. I got a chance to sit down with Seth today during press day for ‘Observe and Report’ and he told me that “At this point no one is for sure confirmed for the film’. He went on to say that “Stephen Chow has made it very obvious that he is pursuing other films, so who knows if he will be involved or not’.

So, there you have it folks.   Stephen Chow might not be in the film after all, and is at the very least surfing for new movies.

Stephen Chow Takes on ‘The Green Hornet’

For months, movie geeks around the world have been speculating about who would play Kato in the Seth Rogen-written take on ‘The Green Hornet’.   For almost as long, Stephen Chow’s name has been linked to the part.   Today comes confirmation that not only is Chow taking the part of Green Hornet’s sidekick, the man who brought us ‘Kung Fu Hustle’ and ‘Shaolin Soccer’ will be directing ‘The Green Hornet’.

Columbia presidents Doug Belgrad and Matt Tolmach announced today that Chow would be directing the film about the masked vigilante and his Asian sidekick/driver.   Rogen will be playing the titular role.

Review: ‘CJ7’

Stephen Chow is one of the coolest film-makers out there right now. Ever since I saw Shaolin Soccer (2001), a good but not great movie, I found myself intrigued. It wasn’t until I saw Kung Fu Hustle (2004) that I really began to appreciate his work. Stephen Chow is one of those rare film-makers who direct and star in most of their films … this does, however, seem to be more common among Asian cinema. Stephen Chow’s newest film [at least, to hit US screens] is CJ7, whereas Chow plays Ti, a poor working man. He works himself very hard, struggling to pay for his son’s tuition at a private school. Dicky, his son, in turn struggles to understand why he can’t have the things his wealthy class-mates have. Then, Ti finds an odd ball-like object while rummaging through the dump to get Dicky a new pair of sneakers for gym class. As it turns out, this “ball” is actually a small pet-like alien robot-creature … its kind of unclear, but it is like sticking a teddy bear’s head on a blob of Nickelodeon slime-colored substance with physical properties similar to Stretch Armstrong.

Cj7 is clearly intended to be a family friendly movie, but its also far more entertaining than the average American family film, that often insults even the child’s intelligence. This movie is fun for all ages and has a great story for kids as well. Underneath the surface of whimsical antics, there lies a story of a boy learning some important facts of life and how to appreciate what one has before its gone. For us elders, the movie pleases our senses and emotions, offering plenty of laughs and … I’m not ashamed to admit it, a near tear-jerking scene of pivotal importance to the story’s message. Chow has an uncanny sense of comedy, combining slapstick and situational comedy with CGI effects and martial arts, although the Kung Fu is limited in this movie. Chow has a distinctly playful visual style, often utilizing sight gags to kick off a series of comical mishaps. Overall, Chow manages to succeed in creating another visually interesting comedy with a very well-told story, that often faintly echo those of Aesop’s fables.

Stephen Chow may become Kato in Seth Rogen’s ‘Green Hornet’

Seth Rogen has mentioned that he is considering Stephen Chow as his sidekick Kato in The Green Hornet. Coming Soon gives us this:

“He knew who we were talking about when we said that Rogen played the police officer in Superbad. He seemed genuinely pleased that Rogen might think of him, though he hasn’t been approached, thinking that maybe Rogen doesn’t have his contact info.”

For those of you that aren’t familiar with Stephen Chow or Kato, let me give you a brief rundown of both of them.

Stephen Chow is a famous writer, director and actor in Hong Kong. His film credits include Shaolin Soccer, Kung Fu Hustle, and is currently working on Dragonball.

“Kato was Britt Reid’s valet, who doubled as The Green Hornet’s unnamed, masked driver and sidekick to help him in his vigilante adventures, disguised as the activities of a racketeer and his chauffeur/bodyguard/enforcer. According to the storyline, years before the events depicted in the series, Britt Reid had saved Kato’s life while travelling in the Far East. Depending on the version of the story, this prompted Kato to become Reid’s assistant or friend.” – via wikipedia

Kato was played by one very famous Martial Arts guru in Bruce Lee for the television Series.

Lets hope this will be great with Seth Rogen  holding the reigns,  after Kevin Smith had worked on it. Maybe they could tag team it since Rogen is starring in the new Smith flick, Zach and Miri Make a Porno. Time will tell.
