LOVE HURTS (2025) – Review

February has finally arrived, the month of romance with that big holiday for sweethearts almost “smack dab” in the middle. And naturally, the Hollywood studios are certainly ready to cater to the big occasion, perhaps making a trip to the cinema a fitting finale to an evening of bubbly, flowers, and swanky dinners. Now this year they’re not content to merely release a “swoony” romance or even a riotous “rom-com”. No, moviemakers are mixing things up with the two big releases this weekend. One adds elements of horror flicks and thrillers in HEART EYES. In another section of the multiplex is this “high-concept hybrid” which sprinkles in some “mushy stuff’ with a a fast and frenetic action crime thriller. And with all the roundhouse kicks and furious fists, it’s clear, and not an understatement, that LOVE HURTS.

The opening scene of the story takes us to suburban Milwaukee, where a lovely dark-haired woman exits a bus, whips out a big marker, and quickly vandalizes an ad on the bus stop bench. Getting the black ink embellishments is the image of the top salesman for Frontier Reality, Marvin Gable (Ke Huy Quan). Back at his own modest home, he whips up some Valentine’s cookies to dole out at an open house in a fairly new subdivision. He’s a bit annoyed by one of his defaced signs, but carries on, extolling the house to several possible buyers. A bit later he heads back to headquarters and checks in with his bored assistant Ashley (Lio Tipton). Ducking into his office, Marv is punched by someone in the shadows. When he comes to, Marvis is surprised to see an old “frenemy” the poetic knife-wielding assassin known as “The Raven” (Mustafa Shakir). Turns out that Marv was a former “enforcer” for a criminal gang run by his own brother, “Knuckles’ (Daniel Wu), who now believes that a former accountant named Rose, who embezzled several million dollars from him, is still alive. Since Marv was supposed to have eliminated her years ago, Raven wants Marv to reveal Rose’s hiding place. The surprised Marv gets the upper hand, dashes away to a model home, and is beset by two goons, Otis (Andre Eriksen) and King (Marshawn Lynch), sent by Knuckles’s new “right-hand man”, Merlo (Cam Gigandet). This new battle is soon halted by the arrival of the “lady in question”, the “back from the dead” Rose (Ariana DeBose). So, just why did Marv spare her life (the holiday is a big hint)? And can the duo, despite Marv’s “new persona” survive the henchman hordes dispatched by the enraged Knuckles? Could this be a new “Valentine’s Day massacre” for the 21st century?

In his first feature film outing (and first lead role) since his Oscar win for EVERYTHING EVERYWHERE ALL AT ONCE, Quan is a delirious delight as the sweet, “mild-mannered” realtor who transforms into a whirling dervish of destruction. His mix of expert comic timing and physical prowess. much as with Jackie Chan and even going back to the silent clowns, Chaplin, Keaton, and Lloyd, make his milquetoast Marv a most unlikely action hero. Quan somehow balances his furious fighting with a kind and gentle demeanor that earned him so many fans during that 2023 awards season. Speaking of trophies, the actress who handed him the gold (a year after she received her own), DeBose makes Rose an enigmatic but playful femme fatale, as she draws the audience to her, perhaps to ponder and solve the mystery of this “lady on the run”. Her ultimate pairing with Quan is worth the wait as DeBose becomes his guide and coach, inspiring Marv to be his “true self”. But it takes their combined skills to confront the revenge squads sent out by Knuckles played with a banal, casual cruelty by the unpredictable Wu. Tipton excels as the emotionally numb Ashley (a spin on Aubrey Plaza in TV’s “Parks and Recreations”), earning laughs and pathos when the brooding killer poet played with dark intensity by Shakir ignites a spark of passion buried deep within her. There’s also comic chaos generated by the other main baddies, Gigandet, Eriksen, and the rampaging “human bulldozer” King played with good humor by former pro footballer Lynch. But the biggest comic support can be found in the smaller supporting roles of the captured crooked “bean-counter” given lots of manic energy, though he’s mainly taped into a chair by the the superb Rhys Darby, and the simple, but warm-hearted “good ole’ boy” boss of Marv played by Quan’s GOONIES pal Sean Astin, a nice guy scooped up in this underworld war.

And speaking of firsts, this is the first directing job for stunt coordinator Jonathan Eusebio, Perhaps this cemented a “simpatico” bond with his leading man since Quan was himself a “fall guy” for many years. And this accounts for the very creative fight sequences, full of energy and great wit, as Marv tries to quickly assess the situation and use all manner of nearby household items for defense and attack (staplers can inflict pain and block lots of deadly blades). Eusebio has a good visual eye, especially in an early variation of the montage, as prospective clients change as Marv strolls from room to room in the model house. The location work is also tops with Manitoba subbing very well for Milwaukee. Plus he expertly guides the cast as the script goes from slapstick romp to deadly sibling showdown. The biggest problem may be with the abundance of stunt scenes as they feel like “plate-spinning” as the story nears the big reveals and the finale. Thankfully the filmmakers probably realized this since the flick clocks in under ninety minutes (no need for a BRUTALIST intermission). Action fans will get their needed “fix” without feeling as though they’ve taken too many rapid kicks to the noggin. As I mentioned earlier, the pairing of Quan and DeBose makes an inspired couple of pain-relievers to ease the sting and aches when LOVE HURTS.

THE GOONIES (1985) screens Sunday Night April 11th at the Sky View Drive-in in Lichtfield, Il. (1500 Historic Old Route 66) This is part of the Sky View’s ‘Throwback Sundays’. The second Sunday of the month, they screen a classic movie. Admission is only $7 (free for kids under 5). This is a double feature! GOONIES will be followed by GODZILLA VS KONG. Four kids – Mikey (Sean Astin), Chunk (Jeff Cohen), Mouth (Corey Feldman) and Data (Ke Huy Quan) who call themselves “The Goonies” finds a map in the attic of Mikey’s house. Their beloved neighborhood is about to become a golf course, so they go out on an adventure to find lost buried treasure. Unfortunately, three crooks Mama Fratelli (Anne Ramsey) with her sons Jake (Robert Davi) and Francis (Joe Pantoliano) are also seeking the treasure.

One of the most beloved movies of the 80’s, THE GOONIES is a timeless adventure from director Richard Donner and producer Steven Spielberg that has stood the test of time.

THE GOONIES has youth, fun, and excitement by the truckload but also that perfect “Boy’s Adventure” element that’s often hard to capture on film (think KING KONG, THE THIEF OF BAGDAD, JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS, and LIFE OF PI). THE GOONIES also captured the 80’s so well with its fashion, hairstyles and music, so even now it feels not so much dated, as a charming look back. Many of the film’s young actors went on to bigger things (Sean Astin in LOTR and Oscar-nominee Josh Brolin). ‘Movies on Art Hill’ Series Continues in St. Louis Ends August 2nd with GOONIES

The ‘Movies on Art Hill’ Series in St. Louis continues this Friday, August 2nd with THE GOONIES. Admission is FREE and the movie will start about 9pm.A Facebook invite for the event can be found HERE

The We Are Movie Geeks gang always goes to these, so if you wanna hang with the cool kids, you should go too. It’s free and they set up a big screen at the bottom of the hill. There are food trucks and beer and wine for sale. You can even go dine in the museum’s restaurant before the show if you got money to burn. If you’re a museum member, you can show your membership card and get free popcorn and ice cream (I did that last year even though my card was expired!). Of course, you can bring a cooler with your own food and drinks as well. It’s a lot of fun! Bring your dog! The movies start at 9 but get there early! Thousands of people show up, especially if the weather is nice, and close parking is scarce. There’s live pre-show music and the people-watching can be entertaining.

What’s a film series without the food

Bring your own picnic.

Food Truck Fest, presented by Sauce Magazine, will run from 6 to 8:30 pm in the parking lot to the west of the Louis IX statue on Art Hill. Food trucks vary each week and lines will close at 8:30 pm sharp each night. Cash, credit, and debit cards accepted. An ATM will be on Art Hill Plaza.

The Museum’s Cafe will be open and serving casual fare including freshly prepared soups, sandwiches, and salads until 9 pm.

Concession stands with snacks and soda will be located at the top of Art Hill. Show your Saint Louis Art Museum membership card and get a free bag of popcorn!

Adult beverages will be available for purchase at the Panorama booth.

Wizard World COMIC CON St. Louis April 5th – 7th – Great Line-Up of Guests!

Pop culture comes to life in St. Louis next month! It’s the Wizard World COMIC CON April 5th – 7th at America’s Center downtown (701 Convention Plaza – St. Louis, MO 63101), and boy oh boy, do they have an amazing line-up of guests!

Wizard World Comic Con events bring together thousands of fans of all ages to celebrate the best in pop-fi, pop culture, movies, graphic novels, cosplay, comics, television, sci-fi, toys, video gaming, gaming, original art, collectibles, contests and more. St. Louis show hours are Friday, February 2nd, 3-8 p.m.; Saturday, February 3rd, 10 a.m.-7 p.m., Sunday,February 4th, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.

Wizard World Comic Con St. Louis is also the place for cosplay, with fans young and old showing off their best costumes throughout the event. Fans dressed as every imaginable character – and some never before dreamed – will roam the convention floor and participate in the famed Wizard World Costume Contest on Saturday night.

JASON MOMOA

Jason Momoa is one of Hollywood’s exciting up-and-coming leading men. Momoa recently starred as the iconic superhero Aquaman in Justice League and will star in the upcoming stand-alone spinoff, Aquaman, which premieres December 21, 2018. In television, Momoa is currently in production for Apple series “See,” and starred as the lead in Netflix’s action/adventure series “Frontier,” on the acclaimed drama “The Red Road,” and played an integral role in launching HBO’s Emmy-nominated “Game of Thrones” with his performance as Dothraki warlord “Khal Drogo.” Momoa also appeared in The Bad Batch, Once Upon a Time in Venice, as the title character in Conan the Barbarian, and opposite Sylvester Stallone in Warner Bros.’ Bullet to the Head. As a director, Momoa’s talents were showcased in Road to Paloma, a road-tale character-driven thriller shot throughout the American Southwest, which he co-wrote, co-produced, directed and starred in.

SEAN ASTIN

Sean Astin (born February 25, 1971) is an American film actor, director, voice artist, and producer best known for his film roles as Samwise Gamgee in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Mikey Walsh in The Goonies, and the title character of Rudy. In television, he appeared as Lynn McGill in the fifth season of 24 and currently voices Raphael in the 2012 Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles TV series.

Astin Stars in the just wrapped Sony Pictures Romantic Comedy entitled, “Mom’s Night Out” Starring Sarah Drew, Patricia Heaton, Harry Shum Jr. & Trace Adkins.  Films awaiting immediate release are, “The Boys of Abu Ghraib” and a WWII piece called, “the Little Boy.” There are three other titles that wrapped production in the 1st part of the year: “Extraction” with Danny Glover, “Freemason” (filmed in Salt Lake City) also starring Randy Wayne & Alex McKenna.

Astin recently received strong reviews for the charming and funny indie films, “And Their Off” and “Stay Cool”.

The child actor made his feature film debut at age 13. He portrayed Mikey in Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster hit The Goonies (1985). After The Goonies, the young performer appeared in several more films, including the Disney made-for-TV movie, The B.R.A.T. Patrol, opposite Nia Long, Tim Thomerson and Brian Keith; Like Father Like Son with Dudley Moore and Kirk Cameron (1987); White Water Summer with Kevin Bacon (1987), The War of the Roses (1989); and the lauded World War II epic film Memphis Belle (1990). He successfully navigated the transition from child actor to young adult in the filmsToy Soldiers (1991) and Encino Man (1992).

Astin scored a career defining, triumphant success in the inspirational and universally applauded college football biopic Rudy (1993), about the life-changing struggles and rewards of the title character, Daniel Ruettiger.

CHRIS KATTAN

Chris Kattan is best known as one of the longest serving cast members on NBC’s ‘Saturday Night Live.’ In the 8 years Chris starred in the landmark late night program, he became best known for his characters ‘Mango,’ ‘Mr Peepers,’ and one of the ‘Butabi Brothers’ in the ‘Night at the Roxbury’ sketch alongside Will Ferrell. Chris starred with Ferrell in a 1998 movie adaption of the sketch.

Since his time at SNL, Chris has worked as the series regular ‘Bob’ on ABC’s ever-popular ‘The Middle’ as well as had memorable appearances in the recent hit features ‘Hotel Transylvania’ and ‘The Ridiculous 6.’

A native of Orange County, California, Brian Krause is best known for his portrayal of Whitelighter Leo Wyatt on Aaron Spelling’s popular program Charmed.

DREW FULLER

DANIEL CUDMORE

Appears as Felix, a member of the Volturi, in The Twilight Saga: New Moon and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. He returns the conclusion in 2012’s The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2.

Prior to filming The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, Cudmore was on location in Santa Barbara filming Rights of Passage. He most recently completed production on two projects: the feature film The Baytown Disco (returning to Louisiana for filming) playing Lincoln Oodie, and a movie-of-the-week for CMT called “To The Matt.”

Born to British parents in Vancouver, Canada, he grew up in Squamish, BC near the world famous ski resort of Whistler, BC. His Father is a doctor and he is the middle of three boys – all over 6 foot 5 inches tall. At 6 foot 6 inches, Cudmore is a natural athlete. He has played most sports competitively, including ski racing and snowboarding and has appeared in numerous skiing and boarding videos. He performed a variety of theatre roles in school & local productions, particularly enjoying improv.

Cudmore won a football Scholarship to Gannon University in Pennsylvania. But, after breaking his leg in a football game two years into his liberal arts degree, he returned to Vancouver. He continued with his acting studies and appeared in various commercials.

LOU FERRIGNO

Louis Jude “Lou” Ferrigno is an American actor, fitness trainer/consultant, and retired professional bodybuilder. As a bodybuilder, Ferrigno won an IFBB Mr. America title and two consecutive IFBB Mr. Universe titles, and appeared in the bodybuilding documentary Pumping Iron. As an actor, he is best known for portraying the title role in the CBS television series The Incredible Hulk. He has also appeared in European-produced fantasy-adventures such as Sinbad of the Seven Seas and Hercules, and as himself in the sitcom The King of Queens and the 2009 comedy I Love You, Man.

Lou Ferrigno was born in Brooklyn, New York to Victoria and Matt Ferrigno, an Italian American police lieutenant. Soon after he was born, Ferrigno says he believes he suffered a series of ear infections and lost 75 – 80% of his hearing, though his condition was not diagnosed until he was three years old. Ferrigno started weight training at age 13, citing body builder and Hercules star Steve Reeves as one of his role models. He was also a fan of the Hercules films that starred Reeves—and would later play Hercules as well. Ferrigno’s other personal heroes as a child were Spider-Man and the Hulk. Ferrigno attended St. Athanasius Grammar School and Brooklyn Technical High School, where he learned metal working.

 

WIZARD WORLD Comic Con St. Louis Adds Anime Voice Actors Bryce Papenbrook, Austin Tindle, and Jad Saxton – February 2nd – 4th

Three popular anime voice actors have been added to Wizard World Comic Con St. Louis, February 2-4 at America’s Center, as Bryce Papenbrook, Austin Tindle and Jad Saxton will appear at the Anime Arena on the show floor. The three will be available for photos, autographs and voice recordings.

In addition, RightStufAnime.com is partnering with Wizard World to bring something awesome to the Anime Arena. They will be sponsoring a 20×40 space which will be free to all attendees. The Arena will include PS4’s playing the new DragonBallz fighter game, a 500+ manga library, board games, and even some free swag for attendees. He has been a professional voice over artist since the age of eight. He was introduced to the voice acting scene by his father, Bob Papenbrook, and has continued the trade in his footsteps. Tindle (appearing all three days) has worked on several of our favorite Animes including Attack on Titan, Assassination Classroom, Is This a Zombie, and even voices Ken Kaneki from Tokyo Ghoul. The Dallas resident attended the University of Texas at Dallas on an academic scholarship, where he almost became an electrical engineer. At 19, he was cast as Romeo and changed majors the same day. He has spent over a decade performing professionally on stage in Dallas, Texas, but he’s probably most well-known for his work with Funimation Studios, where he has voiced many characters including: Marco Bodt (Attack on Titan), Karma Akabane (Assassination Classroom), Avilio Bruno (91 Days) and many others. Fans can currently hear him voicing the role of Kaneki every Saturday at 1 a.m. on Cartoon Network.

Saxton, appearing all three days, has over 150 roles including some of our favorites: Kanna from Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, Carla from Fairy Tail, and Akatsuki from Log Horizon. Sebastian Stan is quickly becoming one of Hollywood’s most sought after young actors.  Stan was last seen on USA Network’s buzzed about mini-series Political Animals. BILLY BOYD

When he was 17 he left school and went to work in a book-binding workshop. Ironically, during the years he worked at the book-binders, the Lord of the Rings trilogy was printed and bound there, many copies bound by his hands. Billy planned on going to America for a year, but before he went he called the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and asked about applying for when he got back. But it so happened that they still had space for this year and they asked him if he wanted to apply and he did. He was at the drama school in a 3-year course for his bachelor of arts degree, meanwhile studying everything from Shakespeare to puppet-making. During this time Billy had a few small roles in TV series such as Down Amongst The Boys and Taggart. After graduating he performed in many plays like The Slab Boys, The Diary of Adrian Mole etc. at The St. Andrews theatre which were his first paying roles. He then received a call from his agent about the Lord of the Rings movies and if he would like to audition for them. He went along not expecting much, but within a few months Peter Jackson came out to Scotland to meet him and to audition him personally. While rehearsing for a show he received a call from his agent who said that the part of Pippin had been offered to him – if he wanted it.

SEAN ASTIN

Sean Astin (born February 25, 1971) is an American film actor, director, voice artist, and producer best known for his film roles as Samwise Gamgee in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Mikey Walsh in The Goonies, and the title character of Rudy. In television, he appeared as Lynn McGill in the fifth season of 24 and currently voices Raphael in the 2012 Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles TV series.

MICHAEL ROSENBAUM

Michael Rosenbaum has worked with everyone from Bradley Cooper and Kevin Spacey to Christopher Walken and Clint Eastwood. The diverse actor has worked in over twenty films, such as Hit and Run, Urban Legend, Sweet November, Bringing Down The House, Pool Hall Junkies and Sorority Boys. He portrayed Lex Luthor on the smash hit Smallville for seven years and voiced The Flash on the hit animated series The Justice League. LUCY DAVIS

Lucy’s first job as an actress was at the age of 20, when she played Maria Lucas in the BBC/A&E adaptation of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle.  A few years later, she starred in the Golden Globe winning BBC comedy THE OFFICE, playing DAWN TINSLEY. Shortly after this she played DIANNE in Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright’s zombie movie SHAUN OF THE DEAD.She is also part of Pamela Adlon and Louis CK’s comedy drama BETTER THINGS on FX. BONNIE WRIGHT

Wright’s interest in directing springs from her experiences as an actor. From 2001 to 2011, she played Ginny Weasley in all eight films in the Harry Potter series and had the good fortune to work with Christopher Columbus, Alfonso Cuarón, Mike Newell and David Yates. Subsequent acting roles include The Sea (2013) with Charlotte Rampling, After the Dark (2015) with James D’Arcy and most recently,The Highway is for Gamblers (2015), directed by Alexandra McGuinness.

NICHELLE NICHOLS

Nichelle Nichols began her professional singing and dancing career in her home town, Chicago, at the tender age of 14. As a teenager she was discovered by the great Duke Ellington, who hired her to choreograph and perform a ballet for one of his musical suites, and finished the tour as his lead singer. When Nichelle was cast by Gene Roddenberry to create Chief Communications Officer Lt. STAN LEE Joins the Guest List for Wizard World Comic Con in St. Louis

Stan Lee , the legendary comic book writer, editor, actor, producer and publisher, announced that he will attend Wizard World Comic Con St. Louis, February 3-4, The iconic Lee, a member of both the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame and the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame, will greet fans, pose for photo ops, sign autographs and conduct interactive Q&A sessions in Saturday and Sunday.

Known to millions as the man whose superheroes propelled Marvel to its preeminent position in the comic book industry, Stan’s co-creations include Spider-Man™, The Incredible Hulk™, X-Men™, The Fantastic Four, Iron Man, and hundreds of others. In 2005, Dan won a Tony Award for his performance as ‘William Barfee’ in the Broadway production of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Bee”.

BONNIE WRIGHT

Wright’s interest in directing springs from her experiences as an actor. From 2001 to 2011, she played Ginny Weasley in all eight films in the Harry Potter series and had the good fortune to work with Christopher Columbus, Alfonso Cuarón, Mike Newell and David Yates. Subsequent acting roles include The Sea (2013) with Charlotte Rampling, After the Dark (2015) with James D’Arcy and most recently,The Highway is for Gamblers (2015), directed by Alexandra McGuinness.

NICHELLE NICHOLS

Nichelle Nichols began her professional singing and dancing career in her home town, Chicago, at the tender age of 14. As a teenager she was discovered by the great Duke Ellington, who hired her to choreograph and perform a ballet for one of his musical suites, and finished the tour as his lead singer. When Nichelle was cast by Gene Roddenberry to create Chief Communications Officer Lt. Uhura, fourth in command of the Starship Enterprise, in his legendary TV series Star Trek – in the words of Dr. Martin Luther King – “The first non-stereotypical role portrayed by a black woman in television history.”

He has appeared as character actor and leading man in 28 feature films, and in 47 TV shows, including: True Blood, The Tudors, 24, and The White Queen.

JON HEDER

Jonathan Joseph “Jon” Heder (born October 26, 1977) is an American actor and producer. His feature film debut came in 2004 as the title character of the comedy film Napoleon Dynamite. He has also acted in the films Ghost Team, Walt Before Mickey as Roy Disney, The Benchwarmers, School for Scoundrels, Blades of Glory, Mama’s Boy, and When in Rome, and provided voice talents in the animated films Monster House, and Surf’s Up, as well as Pickle and Peanut,  Star vs. the Forces of Evil, and the Napoleon Dynamite animated series.

AMERICAN actor, singer and songwriter James Marsters first found international fame playing punk-goth Brit vampire Spike in the critically acclaimed American TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the equally popular spin-off Angel. Film roles include live action film Dragon Ball, romantic love story P.S. I Love You with Hilary Swank, Gerard Butler and Kathy Bates, USA Original true-crime film Cool Money, independent thriller Shadow Puppets, Winding Roads, The House On Haunted Hill and Chance with Buffy co-star Amber Benson.

Holly Marie Combs is an American actress and television producer. She is known for her roles as Kimberly Brock in the CBS series Picket Fences, Piper Halliwell in The WB series Charmed, and Ella Montgomery in the Freeform series Pretty Little Liars.

THOMAS IAN NICHOLAS

Thomas Ian Nicholas is an American film actor, singer, musician, producer, director, and writer. Nicholas is best known for playing Henry Rowengartner in Rookie of the Year, Walt Disney in Walt Before Mickey and Kevin Myers in the American Pie film series.
