About REAL STEEL

A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future, where the sport of boxing has gone hi-tech, Real Steel stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.

DreamWorks Pictures presents REAL STEEL, directed by Shawn Levy, produced by Don Murphy, Susan Montford and Shawn Levy, with a screenplay by John Gatins, story by Dan Gilroy and Jeremy Leven, and based in part on the short story “Steel” by Richard Matheson. REAL STEEL opened in theaters on October 7, 2011.

REAL STEEL – The Review

“In this corner, REAL STEEL…”

The Review that is…

I didn’t know quite what to expect with this film, but these robots knocked it out of the park! (Or should I say ring?)

Set in the future, the day of the human boxer is dead, and Charlie Kenton’s (Hugh Jackman) career is over. In an attempt to make money, he puts whatever robot he can find in the ring. When the opportunity arises for him to make some money for a new robot, he doesn’t pass it up. The only catch is that he take care of his abandoned son Max (Dakota Goyo) for a while. Reunited, the two take the boxing world by storm with ATOM, an old robot they found at the scrapyard. It doesn’t hurt that they get to know each other along the way, either.

This film was fantastic! Shawn Levy really knew what he was doing with this one. There is an emotional tone that this film sets, that pulls on the audiences heart-strings ever so gently. The emotion and action are perfectly balanced, carrying the audience through the story with ease. They also did not over-do the romance between Bailey (Evangeline Lilly) and Charlie, which movies tend to do more often than not. Instead, they concentrated on the relationship between Charile and Max, and Max’s love for his bot ATOM. This is a true underdog tail. ATOM was a discarded bot, left buried in a scrapyard. But, he got a second chance, just like the relationship between Charlie and Max. There was an OVER THE TOP meets TRANSFORMERS feel to the film, which I did not mind at all. Now, I compare it to those films, but it really was it’s own film. Oh, and don’t think that this is just a film for boys. This film is just as relatable to girls and women. Plus, I’m pretty sure that everyone wants to see a robot doing “the robot”!

Jackman is incredible as Charlie. Playing an asshole, he didn’t isolate the audience, which can sometimes unintentionally happen. Instead, he (Charlie) was cold, yet engaging, leaving me interested in finding out more about him. Goyo is delightfully snarky in his role of Max. He is at just the right age to be mouthy… where it’s funny when he acts out, rather than bratty. The relationship between he and his bot is heartwarming!  But wait… the humans aren’t the only stars in this film. These robots have larger than life (literally) personas. Atom, especially. Between the animatronics and the CGI, Atom feels real. I couldn’t help but grow to love him over the course of the film. That’s when you know you did something right in a film!

I am extremely glad that they didn’t make this film in 3D. They didn’t need to. Sure, the action would have looked cool in 3D, but this isn’t an action movie. This is a story about self discovery, a father and son relationship, and the underdog proving that anything is possible. It just so happens to also have some amazing robot fights! Might I add that they were incredibly stunning, breathtaking even. The new technology that they used to create the ring scenes is mind-blowing! It was so convincing that audience members were clapping after fights!

REAL STEEL is a well-rounded, family friendly movie with a lot of heart. It’s uplifting, touching, action packed… and they even throw in a few good laughs. Trust me, you are going to love it!

OVERALL RATING: 4.75 out of 5 stars

WAMG At The REAL STEEL Junket

Hey there, all you fancy kids! Melissa here. Yesterday, I had the chance to sit down with some of the people behind Dreamworks Pictures’ REAL STEEL, starring Hugh Jackman.

REAL STEEL is a gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future, where the sport of boxing has gone hi-tech, starring Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring.

My day was filled with roundtables, which you will find below. The first was with screenplay writer John Gatins, producers Don Murphy and Susan Montford. They talked about the inspiration behind the film, and using new technology on set.
REAL STEEL ROUNDTABLE WITH DON MURPHY, SUSAN MONTFORD & JOHN GATINS

My second roundtable of the day was with Director Shawn Levy. During our session, he talked about being compared to other directors, THE HARDY MEN, and whether or not there will be a sequel to REAL STEEL. He is quite a charismatic guy!

REAL STEEL ROUNDTABLE WITH SHAWN LEVY

Sugar Ray Leonard… What more can I say? This man is a legend. He spoke to us about teaching Hugh Jackman how to box on camera, and why he thinks boxing movies have such an impact on audiences.

REAL STEEL ROUNDTABLE WITH SUGAR RAY LEONARD

It is hard not to like Anthony Mackie… not that I tried! Mackie plays Finn in the film. It was apparent during this roundtable that he is very well read. I had no idea that he is such a history buff. It’s quite impressive. He also has a snarky comedic presence, which is something that I always appreciate.

REAL STEEL ROUNDTABLE WITH ANTHONY MACKIE

These next two are visual. Hugh Jackman, who plays Charlie Kenton, has quite the presence when he walks in the room. Not an overwhelming presence, but more of a kindness. He was extremely polite and engaging. Jackman spoke with us about shooting a film that his family could enjoy, Wolverine, and LES MISÉRABLES.

Oh, and I might have had my picture taken with him…

The final event of the day was getting to speak with John Rosengrant and Erik Nash about the special effects of the film. John Rosengrant was the animatronic supervisor for the film. He talked about designing the boxing robots in the film. The coolest part was that when we walked into the room, Atom and Noisy Boy, two of the bots, were set up in the room! All 8 feet of them! It was incredible to see the actual animatronics up close. Then Erik Nash, the visual effects supervisor, took us through a brief presentation on how they developed the fight scenes. Technology has come a long way!

What a fun day! Thanks for reading guys. Until next time…
Stay Fancy,
Melissa

SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 23, 2011 – Virgin America has teamed up with DreamWorks Pictures to create a unique integrated marketing campaign surrounding the launch of the new major motion picture Real Steel. Set to debut in theaters nationwide on October 7, 2011, and onboard Virgin America’s Red™ in-flight entertainment system later this year, Real Steel is set in the near future at a time when the sport of boxing has gone high-tech: with 2000 pound robots having replaced human boxers. With tech-forward amenities and touch-screen entertainment generations ahead of other U.S. airlines, Virgin America makes a few cameo appearances in the future-set film. Virgin America is partnering on an online contest with Good Morning America, inviting viewers to win a trip to California to catch a glimpse of some of Hollywood’s biggest heavyweights (and robots) on the red carpet at the film’s premiere. In addition, at Los Angeles International Airport today, the film’s star, Hugh Jackman, unveiled a new Airbus A320 aircraft named “Real Steel” with a larger-than-life image of the film’s “World Robot Boxing” contender “Atom” on the aircraft fuselage. The “Real Steel” plane enters commercial service today, so flyers across the nation will catch a glimpse of the aircraft.

I am so happy to inaugurate this ‘Real Steel’ Virgin America plane,” said the film’s star, Hugh Jackman. “I can’t wait for the fans to see the movie on October 7th.”

“Virgin America is known for next generation amenities like a touch-screen entertainment platform that offers every flyer live TV, 35 films on-demand, interactive Google maps and more.  We’re also known for taking on the sometimes larger competition with a lot of heart, so this film’s story really struck a chord with us,” said Abby Lunardini, Vice President of Corporate Communications at Virgin America. “We’re pleased to integrate with the film in such a unique way – and we know that when Real Steel makes its debut at 35,000 feet on our flights that it will also be a hit with our flyers.”

Known for its hip, mood-lit cabins, touch-screen in-flight entertainment and innovative features like fleetwide WiFi and power outlets at every seat, the California-based Virgin America has captured a list of industry best-in-class awards since launching service in 2007, including “Best Domestic Airline” in Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards and Conde Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards. The Red entertainment platform offers every guest a personal touch-screen entertainment center at their seatback – with 24 television channels, more than 35 on-demand films, a 3,000 MP3 library (with the ability for travelers to build their own playlist in-flight), a Kid’s entertainment platform (with parental controls), videogames, music videos, interactive Google Maps that track a flight’s journey, a seat-to-seat text chat system and more.

Win Passes To REAL STEEL Screening In St. Louis

Just when moviegoers thought they had their fill of giant-sized robots during the summer of 2011, along comes a film with a new take on the metal titans with names such as Zeus, Atom, Midas, Metro, Twin Cities, Noisy Boy and Ambush. The robot designers of this film are a talented team of incredible craftsmen at Legacy Effects, who created a wide range of fascinating boxers for REAL STEEL – all with distinct personalities.

Director Shawn Levy says, “I want the audience to be conscious of the fact that although the film has a science-fiction premise, these are not science-fiction robots. The robots are things that we’d like to believe humans could have built. Apart from the scale of them — they’re not “Transformers” scale and they’re not indestructible — we’ve given them some frailty and humanity in a way that reminds us of such antecedents Iron Giant or Wall-E.”

WAMG is giving away passes to an advanced screening of REAL STEEL on Thursday, October 6th at Wehrenberg Des Peres 14 Cine.
