Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Ron Perlman, Timothée Chalamet, Ariana Grande And Meryl Streep Star In Trailer For Adam McKay’s DON’T LOOK UP

DON’T LOOK UP tells the story of two low-level astronomers, who must go on a giant media tour to warn mankind of an approaching comet that will destroy planet earth. In select theaters December 10, on Netflix December 24, watch the brand-new trailer starring

Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence), an astronomy grad student, and her professor Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) make an astounding discovery of a comet orbiting within the solar system. The problem — it’s on a direct collision course with Earth. The other problem? No one really seems to care. Turns out warning mankind about a planet-killer the size of Mount Everest is an inconvenient fact to navigate. With the help of Dr. Oglethorpe (Rob Morgan), Kate and Randall embark on a media tour that takes them from the office of an indifferent President Orlean (Meryl Streep) and her sycophantic son and Chief of Staff, Jason (Jonah Hill), to the airwaves of The Daily Rip, an upbeat morning show hosted by Brie (Cate Blanchett) and Jack (Tyler Perry).

With only six months until the comet makes impact, managing the 24-hour news cycle and gaining the attention of the social media obsessed public before it’s too late proves shockingly comical — what will it take to get the world to just look up?!

DON’T LOOK UP is written and directed by Academy Award winner Adam McKay (The Big Short) and also stars Mark Rylance, Ron Perlman, Timothée Chalamet, Ariana Grande, Scott Mescudi (aka Kid Cudi), Himesh Patel, Melanie Lynskey, Michael Chiklis and Tomer Sisley.

When asked about how each prepared for the film, Jennifer Lawrence, Leonardo DiCaprio and Adam McKay said:

Lawrence: I spoke to a brilliant astronomer named Amy Mainzer. I was mostly curious about what the world for a female astronomer looks like since they’re so outnumbered. That helped shape Kate’s personality, how she dresses, how she carries herself. I tried to learn about astronomy as well, but I don’t know how much of it I retained. Leo, of course, learned all of it.

DiCaprio: Amy Mainzer is our consultant and astronomer whom I had hundreds of conversations with. She helped me incredibly in playing Dr. Randall Mindy just to be able to articulate this science and basically almost gave me a Carl Sagan-like download on what astronomy is, what it means to be an astronomer, what you look for and the importance of what that means for my character. She was probably one of the most helpful elements to my character that I could’ve imagined.

McKay: Amy was incredible. She was really a major ingredient in this movie. She was constantly fact-checking the script. Honestly, I can’t imagine us being able to pull it off without her. And, and on top of it all, she had a great sense of humor. I just heard the other day she saw the movie, and she was so excited by it. And in a way, that may be the reaction I value the most. Because scientists these days have been under such attack. And the idea that she felt heard seeing the movie was really exciting for me.

I DON’T FEEL AT HOME IN THIS WORLD ANYMORE – Review

I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore - Still 1

Review by Stephen Tronicek

Is everyone an a-hole? The US Grand Jury Prize winner at the Sundance Film Festival this year, I DON’T FEEL AT HOME IN THIS WORLD ANYMORE, seems to be a very easy answer to that question, or at least a comforting distraction. Distraction, then again would be giving it too little credit. I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Anymore deserves every reward coming to it for its hysterical, yet sad script, pitch-perfect direction, and solemnly hilarious performances. After all, when asking such a difficult question of the audience it’s a good idea not to take yourself too seriously.

I DON’T FEEL AT HOME IN THIS WORLD ANYMORE (which has been written and directed by Jeremy Saulnier bit part player and best actor of his kind maybe since Paul Giamatti, Macon Blair) follows Ruth (Melanie Lynskey, still as excellent as she was in Heavenly Creatures until…now) who is sick and tired of people being “assholes.” She’s sick of people letting their dogs poop on her lawn, sick of them driving big world-killer trucks, and sick of them breaking into her house and stealing her stuff. Upon realizing that the authorities can’t do anything for her Ruth, accompanied by resident “great character actor” Elijah Wood as Tony, will track down her stuff and figure out how to deal with all of the “assholes”

The deeper questions at the center of I DON’T FEEL AT HOME IN THIS WORLD ANYMORE, only serve to elevate what is already a pretty slick and biting movie. There’s a deep sadness to be found in the fact that the people around simply do not care about the way they treat others that become even more cutting when you realize this is a microcosm of an even bigger injustice. This film is a quest, one that ends in violent ways, to get back what is ultimately just stuff. Sentimental items that reassure the characters that they themselves matter. But it’s still stuff. People die for stuff, people stab for stuff, people shoot for stuff, and if you’ve got the right sense of humor (which considering how likable the writing and the main cast are you might not need it) there’s something truly transcendent to be found in the roots of this comedic crime story.

Macon Blair (who was already a great screenwriter) seems to have followed in the footsteps of his cohort Jeremy Saulnier in that he directs like he was born to do it. I DON’T FEEL AT HOME IN THIS WORLD ANYMORE may have a smart script, but it’s the direction holds that writing up respectably. There’s so many little touches of information gathering camerawork that allows for the intake of information and an exciting amount of audience engagement in the film, only nailing in what is ultimately a pretty fun tone. The following of a specific gun in the final confrontation takes that intense scene from a sense of disturbing intensity to a sense of blisteringly giddy excitement as we wait for something to happen. Blair is smart enough to know that in dealing with such dark subject matter, keeping the audience moving is a good way to keep the tone light and when his direction on this beautifully gory gun trick goes down as we’ve been waiting for it too, the results are so satisfying. Pair that with the fact that nothing is perfunctory or out of order on the sides of the film (i.e. that satisfying fullness of an early Coen Brothers film like Blood Simple) and I DON’T FEEL AT HOME IN THIS WORLD ANYMORE can’t help but feel like one of the most invigorating experiences of the year.

As you probably guessed too, the cast hits their marks in ways that seem almost baffling. Lynskey has always been an underused powerhouse, but here she’s sympathetic as they come and Elijah Wood gives his best performance since maybe Maniac, showing a character that is maybe as psychotic as the former but has the common sense just not to be for lack of a better word an “asshole.”  These are the only characters that could find themselves in this situation, and having been there they are better for it.

I DON’T FEEL AT HOME IN THIS WORLD ANYMORE is a truly special movie and even in some ways a sign of the quality that could come from the streaming companies such as Netflix and the already incredible Amazon Studios. Amazon’s release of The Neon Demon, Manchester by the Sea and Café Society may have put them on top but I DON’T FEEL AT HOME IN THIS WORLD ANYMORE is an excellent first step for Netflix to climb from its Adam Sandler ditch of unfunny, unclever films to present us with quality entertainment. I DON’T FEEL AT HOME IN THIS WORLD ANYMORE deserves to be seen and deserves to be loved. It might not have the artful importance of many works but it’s still the entertaining film of the year so far.

HELLO I MUST BE GOING – The Review

1994’s HEAVENLY CREATURES turned out to be the little flick that launched some big careers (along with helping turn New Zealand into a movie making mecca), This docudrama pushed director Peter Jackson out into the big studios and all the way to Middle Earth (with several Academy Awards along the way). Another CREATURES alum to go home with gold in a few years was Kate Winslet (with a stop on that doomed boat trip that became the second biggest box office hit of all time). And what about poor, young murderess Pauline? I’m speaking of the talented actress that shared the screen with Ms. W. Well, Melanie Lynskey has racked up a lot of screen time ( big and small screen ) since then. Many may know her as Charlie Harper’s stalker-ex in the TV sitcom smash “Two and a Half Men”. She’s also had some great supporting roles in several critically praised films like UP IN THE AIR, THE INFORMANT!, and the recent gem THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER. But she’s not had her date with Oscar…yet. But that may soon happen thanks to her wonderful work in HELLO I MUST BE GOING. And this is not a supporting role, not someone’s gal or pal. Ms. L is the lead here and carries this quirky comedy/ drama superbly.

Lynskey plays Amy Minsky, a woman who’s been knocked for a loop by her cheating husband. We meet her several months after a divorce and she is in quite a funk (to put it mildly). This thirty-something has moved back to her Connecticut family home, much to the consternation of her mother, Ruth (Blythe Danner) and soon-to-retire father Stan (John Rubinstein). Amy sleeps till noon and mopes about the rest of the day while wearing the same shorts and ratty red T-shirt. Ruth nags her to straighten up. Seems they’re going to have a big client over for Dinner (if Stan lands his account then he and Ruth can take that ” Gallivanting the Globe ” tour!). The big night arrives and the client, his wife, and 19-year-old actor son, Jeremy (Christopher Abbott) sit down for a meal. The conversation upsets Amy and she retreats to another room. Presently Jeremy enters this room and plants a passionate kiss on  the very surprised more-than-a-decade -older lady. Soon the two are sneaking out to indulge in passionate carnal encounters. Amy finally feels alive again. But is this a rebound fling or the real deal? Is she finally ready to move forward with her life?

After a few early scenes of Amy floundering at home ( he seems to move about in a thick fog), the film kicks in to be become a gentle comedy and an uplifting ” starting over ” fable. Lynskey’s a real charmer as she finally starts to stand-up for herself (and grow-up somewhat). Her scenes of rekindled passion are heart-warming and very funny (sneaking around like a teen after curfew, throwing pebbles at bedroom windows). Abbott’s very appealing as the sensitive, determined young lover (he’s going to crash through every age-barrier she throws at him). He’s at a crossroads also. After over a decade of acting, he may have lost the passion. Rubinstein is a delightful actor mostly known for his extensive TV works. His sympathetic Stan is a tender-hearted Poppa who still adores his little girl, but is at a loss trying to ease her pain. On the opposite end of the parenting spectrum is Danner’s Ruth. She’s sick and tired of the returned prodigal (darn this reverse empty nest !) and Mom’s dishing up a big helping of really tough love. But she’s not just playing a cranky spin on her feisty senior from the MEET THE PARENTS series or THE LUCKY ONE. Ruth’s had her share of crushed dreams that we learn of after she finally explodes at Amy. Kudos to Sarah Koskoff for a delightful script that never feels forced and to actor turned director Todd Louiso for guiding this talented cast and never letting the laughs get in the way of this story of ‘do-overs’. Oh, and if you’re wondering, those funny comedy brothers do indeed make an appearance. HELLO I MUST BE GOING is sweet romance that gives a terrific actress a chance to truly shine. To quote another song from ANIMAL CRACKERS, ” Hooray for Melanie Lynskey! “.

Taking audiences on a humorous, moving, and intimate journey against an epic backdrop of Earth’s final days, “Seeking a Friend for the End of the World” is the feature directorial debut of screenwriter Lorene Scafaria. Set in a too-near future where time at once stands still and is slipping away forever, the writer/director explores what people will do and how they will feel when humanity’s end is near. A 70-mile-wide asteroid is en route to Earth, and the last best attempt to counter it has failed. Also failing is the marriage of soft-spoken insurance salesman Dodge (Golden Globe Award winner Steve Carell); the breaking news that the world will end in an estimated 21 days cues his wife to leave him on the spot. Dodge is a man who has always played by the rules of life, while his neighbor Penny (Academy Award nominee Keira Knightley) is an extroverted woman who hasn’t. From these opposite perspectives, both initially choose to navigate the impending end of the world with blinders on. Dodge declines joining his friends in increasingly reckless behavior, while Penny fixates on her relationship issues with a self-absorbed musician.

The two misfits meet first when Penny has a rough night and then again when she belatedly delivers Dodge a lost letter. That letter could alter Dodge’s future; it’s from his high-school sweetheart Olivia, the love of his life. When a riot breaks out around their apartment building, Dodge realizes that he must seek Olivia out before it’s too late while Penny makes the decision to spend her last days with family in England. Seizing the moment, Dodge promises to help Penny reach her family if she will provide transport for the two of them in her car immediately. She agrees, and they escape. On the road together, the unlikely traveling companions’ respective personal journeys accelerate, and their outlooks – if not the world’s – brighten.
