DUNKIRK Will Have Widest 70MM Release In 25 Years

Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that tickets for 70MM engagements of director Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic action thriller DUNKIRK will go on sale at 9:00 a.m. EDT, Wednesday, July 5, two days prior to when tickets go on sale for regular engagements of the film.

The early on-sale date will give moviegoers their first chance to purchase tickets to view the film in 70MM, which offers unparalleled image quality and digital sound. The release of DUNKIRK in 70MM will be the widest in 25 years.

In anticipation of the 70MM release, Christopher Nolan captured much of the film with IMAX’s extremely high-resolution 2D film cameras, which captures the world of the film with greater scope and breathtaking image quality. Audiences will feel they are a part of the race against time to rescue 400,000 British and Allied troops trapped by enemy forces on the beaches of Dunkirk in World War II.

“I have been a longtime proponent of film – particularly the IMAX film format – as a storytelling medium,” said Christopher Nolan. “The immersive quality of the image is second to none, drawing the audience into the action in the most intense way possible.”

In a Fandango survey of more than 10,000 moviegoers, DUNKIRK is one of the top-five most anticipated movies of the summer season.

A full list of 70MM theatres in both US and Canada may be found on the official Dunkirk website at dunkirkmovie.com. Tickets for regular format showings will also be available two days later, starting at 9:00 a.m. EDT, Friday, July 7.

From filmmaker Christopher Nolan (“Interstellar,” “Inception,” “The Dark Knight” Trilogy) comes the epic action thriller “Dunkirk.”

Nolan directed “Dunkirk” from his own original screenplay, utilizing a mixture of IMAX® and 65mm film to bring the story to the screen. The film was produced by Emma Thomas and Nolan, with Jake Myers serving as executive producer.

“Dunkirk” opens as hundreds of thousands of British and Allied troops are surrounded by enemy forces. Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in.

“Dunkirk” features a multigenerational ensemble cast, including Fionn Whitehead, Tom Glynn-Carney, Jack Lowden, Harry Styles, Aneurin Barnard, James D’Arcy and Barry Keoghan, with Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance and Tom Hardy.

The behind-the-scenes creative team on “Dunkirk” included director of photography Hoyte van Hoytema, production designer Nathan Crowley, editor Lee Smith, costume designer Jeffrey Kurland, visual effects supervisor Andrew Jackson and special effects supervisor Scott Fisher. The music was composed by Hans Zimmer.

Warner Bros. Pictures presents a Syncopy Production, a film by Christopher Nolan, “Dunkirk.” Opening in conventional theatres and IMAX on July 21, 2017, the film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

The Academy Announces Leonardo DiCaprio, Brie Larson, Mark Rylance, Alicia Vikander As Presenters For Oscars

Academy Award® winners Leonardo DiCaprio, Brie Larson, Mark Rylance and Alicia Vikander will present at the 89th Oscars, show producers Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd announced today. All return to the Oscars stage after winning last year in their respective acting categories. Hosted by Jimmy Kimmel, the Oscars will air live on Sunday, February 26, on the ABC Television Network.

DiCaprio won last year for Actor in a Leading Role for “The Revenant.” He was previously nominated for his performances in “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2013), for which he also received a Best Picture nomination, “Blood Diamond” (2006), “The Aviator” (2004) and “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” (1993). His film credits also include “The Great Gatsby” (2013), “Django Unchained” (2012) and “J. Edgar” (2011).

Larson’s performance in “Room” earned her an Oscar for Actress in a Leading Role. She has also appeared in “Trainwreck” (2015) and “Short Term 12” (2013). Her upcoming films include “Captain Marvel,” “Kong: Skull Island,” “The Glass Castle” and “Unicorn Store.”

Rylance won for Actor in a Supporting Role for “Bridge of Spies.” His other film credits include “The BFG” (2016) and the upcoming features “Dunkirk” and “Ready Player One.” A prolific stage actor, he earned Tony Awards for his performances in “Twelfth Night,” “Jerusalem” and “Boeing-Boeing.”

Vikander won for Actress in a Supporting Role for “The Danish Girl.” Her recent film credits include “The Light between Oceans” (2016), “Jason Bourne” (2016), “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” (2015) and “Ex Machina” (2015). Her upcoming films include “Euphoria,” “Submergence” and “Tomb Raider.”

The 89th Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 26, 2017, at the Dolby Theatre® at Hollywood & Highland Center® in Hollywood, and will be broadcast live on the ABC Television Network at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m.

According to BBC:

Taking place between 26 May to 4 June 1940, heavy German bombing had destroyed Dunkirk’s harbour, and there were hundreds of thousands of men on the beach, hoping to be rescued. The Luftwaffe attacked whenever the weather allowed, reducing the town of Dunkirk to rubble.

On 29 May, the evacuation was announced to the British public, and many privately owned boats started arriving at Dunkirk to ferry the troops to safety. This flotilla of small vessels famously became known as the ‘Little Ships’. The contribution these civilian vessels made to the Dunkirk evacuation gave rise to the term ‘Dunkirk spirit’, an expression still used to describe the British ability to rally together in the face of adversity.

Although the Germans had taken over a million Allied prisoners in three weeks at a cost of 60,000 casualties, the evacuation was a major boost to British morale and enabled the Allies to fight another day – even if that fight was to be on home turf, resisting the expected German invasion of Britain.

THE BFG – Review

Disney's THE BFG is the imaginative story of a young girl named Sophie (Ruby Barnhill) and the Big Friendly Giant (Oscar (TM) winner Mark Rylance) who introduces her to the wonders and perils of Giant Country Directed by Steven Spielberg, the film is based on the beloved book by Roald Dahl.

People without knowledge of the 1982 Roald Dahl novel might be wondering what BFG stands for. Allow me to clear this up in the case of the film… Big Flipping Disappointment! (I was going to use another word, but since this is a children’s movie…. I thought it best to keep things PG.)

Ten-year-old Sophie is an orphan with a fear of the things that go bump in the night. On one particular evening, after staying up far too late, she makes the mistake of checking out the window where she spots a giant scurrying about town. Since she was spotted, the giant had no choice other than to snatch her from her windowsill and take her home with him. While there, she learns just how lucky she is, since he is the only giant, the runt of the bunch, who doesn’t eat children. Together, they form a friendship and decide it’s time to stop his giant brethren from snatching and eating orphan children in her world.

Visually, THE BFG is incredible to look at. The scenery is incredible, and the BFG has incredibly kind eyes. There’s no doubt that Steven Spielberg knows what he’s doing on a visual front. With him bringing life to characters such as E.T., I really thought I would enjoy this film. He’s always been an incredible storyteller. Having said that, the story in THE BFG is missing something. I didn’t connect with Sophie (Ruby Barnhill), or anything going on in the story. Barnhill is exceptional as an actress, but they made her character stiff, and a bit whiny. There wasn’t a personal connection with the audience. Not enough for me to care.

Fact: I haven’t fallen asleep in a movie theater in over a decade. About 45 minutes in I dozed off for 20 minutes because I was bored to tears. Luckily, my twin sister was with me to assure me that I missed nothing, and that she, too, was bored.

The one scene that did grasp my attention was when they were hunting dreams by a tree. It was a beautiful sight to behold. I also give them props for sticking with the original language of the book. It couldn’t have been an easy task. Still, these things were not enough to keep me interested in the movie as a whole.

OVERALL RATING: 2 out of 5 stars (the 2 is for the visual effects)

Originally created as a bedtime story, “The BFG” was Dahl’s own favorite of all his stories. “It was very important for us to be loyal to the language,” says Spielberg, “and the great writer Melissa Mathison, who also wrote ‘E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial,’ wrote “The BFG.”

BRIDGE OF SPIES to be Released on Blu-ray and Digital HD February 2nd

Brooklyn lawyer James Donovan (Tom Hanks) is an ordinary man placed in extraordinary circumstances in DreamWorks Pictures/Fox 2000 Pictures' dramatic thriller BRIDGE OF SPIES, directed by Steven Spielberg.

A CASE OF THE COLD WAR: BRIDGE OF SPIES  – The story of James Donovan, Francis Gary Powers and Rudolf Abel encapsulates the Cold War era—a tense political climate shrouded in propaganda, espionage and the threat of nuclear war.  This piece explores the characters and the real-life people they’re based on, ordinary men in extraordinary circumstances. Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks share personal stories of the Cold War, describing how experiences from their youth were part of the attraction to the script, how this influenced the way they approached the film and why the history behind Bride Of Spies resonates across generations and is relevant in today’s political climate.

U-2 SPY PLANE: BEALE AIR FORCE BASE – Showcases spectacular footage shot at the Beale Air Force Base of the U-2 plane and the scene where Powers and other pilots are instructed about their spying mission, including a cameo appearance in the film by Francis Gary Powers son, Gary Powers Jr. and discussion with the Air Force liaison about the significance of the scene and why they got behind the film

 SPY SWAP: LOOKING BACK ON THE FINAL ACT – Steven Spielberg and his team stage the pivotal scene of the film at Glienicke Bridge, the very same location where the historic exchange of Soviet spy Rudolf Abel and U-2 spy plane pilot Francis Gary Powers took place. Gary Powers Jr. shares his memories of his father’s experience with voiceover recordings from Francis Gary Powers, as filmmakers and the cast recreate a page of Cold War history while filming in the presence of Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel.

 BERLIN 1961: RECREATING THE DIVIDE – A mix of behind-the-scenes footage with iconic archival imagery transports viewers to another place and time as the filmmakers construct the Berlin Wall, envision what it was like to cross through Checkpoint Charlie, and recreate the divide. On set in Berlin just days after the 25th anniversary celebration of the fall of the Berlin Wall, a historian who lived through the experience describes what being there means to her. In Poland, where the Wall was recreated for the film, tanks, hundreds of extras and powerful sequences make the setting feel epic and surreal.
