Press members at the KINGSMAN : THE SECRET SERVICE press conference during San Diego Comic-Con 2014 learned a valuable lesson – Turn your phone off or Samuel L. Jackson will answer it!

That’s right. During the 15 minute press conference Samuel L. Jackson answered someones ringing telephone, and toyed with the person on the other end. Jackson was there, along with Colin Firth, Taron Egerton, Sophie Cookson, Sofia Boutella and Co-Creators Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons to talk about the upcoming film, slated to release October 24, 2014. Check it out below.

Based upon the acclaimed comic book and directed by Matthew Vaughn (Kick Ass, X-Men First Class), Kingsman: The Secret Service tells the story of a super-secret spy organization that recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into the agency’s ultra-competitive training program just as a global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius.

KINGSMAN : THE SECRET SERVICE hits theaters OCTOBER 24, 2014

KICK-ASS Hyperbole to Spill Over Into a Sequel

Some people can’t get enough Ass-Kick.  Cue Nic Cage’s giggly hiccup here.

The highly anticipated KICK-ASS has debuted at SXSW.  You can check out our very own, Travis’, review right here.  But, it’s not so much KICK-ASS premiering to hundreds of adoring fans (most of whom, I’m sure, were saying the film “kicks ass” all throughout the Texas night) that is causing buzz now some 48 hours later.  What is getting the buzz are the reports coming from the red carpet, wherein just about everyone involved in the film was talking sequel.

As evidenced by red carpet reports from Coming Soon.net and Film School Rejects, Mark Millar, John Romita, Jr., Aaron Johnson, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse all confirmed a KICK-ASS 2 is coming, and it could be coming soon.  How soon we can only assume at this point, but, once the film is released on April 16th, we may have a better idea just how quickly Lionsgate will want a sequel served up.  I’m sure, as soon as it is announced, it will already be dubbed as the “greatest superhero sequel in the history of the world.”

…or something like that.

McTeigue Still Wants SUPERMAN

Supes

In a recent interview with MTV, NINJA ASSASIN director, James McTeigue briefly opened up regarding his ambitions to make a new SUPERMAN film with WB. The franchise is in a strange place due to rights being tossed around, and the overall failure of Bryan Singer’s SUPERMAN RETURNS (which I still enjoyed quite a bit, despite its flaws).

It’s in a weird place at the moment,” McTeigue told MTV News. “They’re trying to work out what they’re doing. Warner Brothers is trying to figure out their next move on it. There’s some things you can do with the ‘Superman’ franchise, there’s other things you can’t do. So it hasn’t gone anywhere. I think it’s ripe for a retooling,’ he said. “I would love to — if it happened, I would at least start a conversation about it.

Well? Sounds like he would really love to be on board! I loved V for VENDETTA and I have yet to see his latest, NINJA ASSASIN, but I really enjoy this idea of McTeigue rebooting the franchise. I truthfully do hope that they steer clear from an origin story in this film, simply because it has been done to death, but other than that, let’s see something new! I was really into Mark Millar’s idea of a 9-hour SUPERMAN film that he presented last year and it would be very cool to see McTeigue tackle something in the more mainstream superhero genre. I don’t know if I want the dark/grit of THE DARK KNIGHT for SUPERMAN, only because it then becomes practically the same film with different characters, but I would love to see a different spin on the franchise. In other words, I would love to see McTeigue pull a Nolan and revamp the series and show us a SUPERMAN that we aren’t 100% acquainted with. Check out the video interview from MTV below.

I am a complete Batman fanboy, but I still have love for the Man of Steel. Do you guys want to see James McTeigue tackle a new Superman film?

New KICK-ASS Poster Can Do Two Things At Once

kickass poster

The marketing for KICK-ASS is amping it up something fierce.  We’ve just recently had these character posters, then this teaser trailer hit yesterday, and, today, the film’s Myspace page gives us the poster you see above.  It, essentially tells us two things about this movie.  This isn’t going to be your typical, run-of-the-mill, PG-13, superhero movie.  What this is going to be is an in-your-face, kick-ass action movie whose main characters just happen to be superheros.

KICK-ASS is set to (not) fly into theaters on April 16th, 2010.

These Are Some KICK-ASS Character Posters

kickass poster all

It certainly doesn’t bother me that a film gets marketed by way of character posters, if A) those character posters are both sweet-looking and even the slightest bit innovative and B) if those posters meld together like Voltron and create one, massively epic banner.  Thus is the case with KICK-ASS, the latest comic book adaptation from Mark Millar and directed by Matthew Vaughn.  The come to us today, courtesy of IGN.

Check ’em all out in glorious ginormity:

What do you think?  Which one is your favorite?  Does it hurt to tell you that one of these character is being played by Nicolas Cage?  I’ll give you a hint, it’s not the Red Mist.

KICK-ASS hits theaters on April 16th, 2010.

Mark Millar to Direct Unknown Superhero Movie

kick-ass issue 1

Evidently, Mark Millar was inspired to become a writer of comic books (a phrase I love typing due to my childhood love for CONDORMAN) after a meeting with Alan Moore.  The trajectories of their careers, particularly in how they view Hollywood adaptations, couldn’t be further from each other.  Those paths are about to become even further apart, as Millar has announced via his official forum that he will be directing a superhero movie next year.  What is it?  He’s not saying, but, from the amount of secrecy he conveys, it might be a big one.

Read for yourself:

Bet you didn’t see THAT coming, laddies and lassies!

But this is one of several big surprises planned for next year and you’ll hear a bit more about this in February when we start to release details. What is it? Who is it about? Well, that’s all a secret for now, but I learned a lot from Kick-Ass and love having the same creative freedom I have with comics when I work in cinema. I never want to be a studio bitch and go in there pitching for them to love me. The closest I came to this was a couple of calls regarding Superman, but pretty much none of my plans ever revealed as I didn’t like the idea of anyone nicking them.

Similarly, I don’t like the idea of asking for funding and justifying scenes with the money-men so I’m doing what Matthew Vaughn did with Kick-Ass and just making it outside the system with private investors. The financing is all secured and the movie stands or falls on how good I can make it, doing what Matthew did and just selling it once completed.

As you can imagine, I couldn’t be more excited. More as it happens, but this might just beat out War Heroes and American Jesus as my follow-ups to the Wanted and Kick-Ass movies. Have two other pictures about to go into development (and Wanted and Kick-Ass 2, of course), but I think you need to scare the Hell out of yourself every once in a while and something totally new like directing should do the trick.

The big question: Are you allowed to direct without wearing a baseball cap? Is it the modern version of the 70s BEARD?

MM

On second thought, this could be a nothing project that Millar is attempting to build up fans’ appetites with his secrecy.  In all honesty, this could be anything.  He has previously worked on Swamp Thing, The Flash, Judge Dredd, JLA, and Wolverine, all upcoming film properties that have no director attached.  Most notably, however, is the fact that his Ultimates take on The Avengers is being used by Zack Penn as the basis for the upcoming AVENGERS movie.  While I highly doubt Paramount would hand the reigns of this high-profile project to a first-time director, you never can tell.

What do you think?  What project is Mark Millar directing?  Is it something major or a smaller property?  Out of any superhero property, which one would you most like to see Millar take on?  Let us know by commenting below.

You Know, Mark Millar, Sequelitis Is Not ‘Kick-Ass’

kick-ass

I’m guessing this news is warranted, that a sequel to ‘Kick-Ass’ works out well with the story Mark Millar has crafted.  It just seems too much like sequelitis when they are already announcing a follow-up, as well as a potential shoot-date.

Millar, the writer/creator behind the comic series, spoke with MTV about sequel opportunity for the Matthew Vaughn-directed, superhero movie.

There’s a basic plot.  The series ends on a teaser for the next one, and the movie ends on that teaser, too.

Millar also claims the sequel will begin shooting “within two years” and that it already has a premise.  There is no word on whether Vaughn or ‘Kick-Ass’ screenwriter, Jane Goldman, will be returning.

We don’t want to sound too cocky, but we know this is good.  It didn’t cost that much money to make. There will definitely be another one.

‘Kick-Ass,’ the first one, comes out on April 13th, 2010.

‘Wanted 2’ Finds a Tiggerish Screenwriter

wanted10

No, we will not be seeing James McAvoy wearing a red shirt and no pants.   No, we probably won’t be seeing Angelina Jolie in orange and black striped bouncing on a springy tail.   We probably won’t be seeing Ms. Jolie, at all.   The sequel to last summer’s high-intensity actioner, ‘Wanted,’ is being birthed, and Universal has tapped screenwriter  Evan Spiliotopoulos to punch out a screenplay.

In case you don’t recognize Spiliotopoulos’ name, or, if the Pooh euphemisms above are lost on you, then you probably should know that this is the same screenwriter who co-wrote ‘Pooh’s Heffalump Movie.’ Â  Quite a leap from one project to the next, don’t you think?

Timur  Bekmambetov is attached to direct the sequel, which is based on  the comic series by Mark Millar and J.G. Jones.   No word yet on whether McAvoy is returning, or if he’s stuck in a hole in his house.   Okay.   Winnie-the-Pooh jokes are over.

What do you think? Â  Does ‘Wanted’ deserve a sequel? Â  Is the co-writer of a film like ‘Pooh’s Heffalump Movie’ the right choice to adapt this? Â  Are you still reeling that Ram-Man put ‘Wanted’ on his best of 2008 list? Â  Let us know by commenting below!

Vaughn and Millar in talks for ‘American Jesus’ Adaptation

americanjesus

With the feature film adaptation of ‘Kick Ass’ virtually in the bag, director Matthew Vaughn is in talks with writer Mark Millar to adapt another of his comic books called ‘American Jesus’. Production is slated to begin this summer and will also be produced outside the studio system, just like ‘Kick Ass’.

The story centers on the return of Christ in the modern world, leading to a final confrontation with the Antichrist in a bid to save humanity.

The book, made with artist Peter Gross, originally appeared as a three-issue miniseries in 2006 with the title “Chosen.” When Millar, one of the top writers in the comics field, decided to continue the story as a trilogy of miniseries, the overarching title became “American Jesus.” The second installment is subtitled “The Resurrection” and is due out in the fall. — HR

Mark Millar is one of, if not [arguably] THE top writer in comics working today. ‘Kick Ass’ looks to be totally “kick ass”. He wrote the comic book ‘Wanted’ which became a major Hollywood hit movie. Millar has written for popular titles such as ‘Ultimate X-Men’ and is currently writing a story arc in ‘Wolverine’ that I’ve been following and it’s awesome.

The story, called ‘Old Man Logan’ takes place fifty years in the future after the super villains killed off the super heroes and Wolverine has vowed to live the life of a pacifist in a world engulfed with cruelty and violence. It’s been said that Millar decided to do this story arc because he loved the movie ‘Unforgiven’ and wanted to apply Clint Eastwood’s role to Wolverine.

Character Shot in Costume from ‘Kick-Ass’

Here’s the first image of Aaron Johnson as the costumed Dave Lizewski, the high school student turned violent superhero in ‘Kick-Ass’, directed by Matthew Vaughn. The movie is based on the comic book written by Mark Millar and published by Icon.
