W.E. – The Review

Filed under: Based on a True Story,Biopic,Chick Flicks,Review — Tags: , , , — Jim Batts @ 5:38 pm

Looking to be come a ” queen of all media “, pop icon Madonna has stepped behind the camera to direct her first feature film, W.E. ( maybe the first woman singer/star to do so since Barbra Streisand? ). Here she tackles two stories that intertwine several decades apart : a fictional young woman trapped in a loveless marriage to a wealthy NYC doctor in 1998 and the true life romance between Wallis Simpson ( like Madonna, a style icon ) and Edward, the Duke of Windsor ( the two form the title’s WE ) during the 1930’s. Other films have mixed historical and fictional characters ( RAGTIME, TIME AFTER TIME ), while others have featured modern-day characters getting inspiration from the past ( JULIE AND JULIA ), so does this new film put a fresh spin on these concepts? And after a spotty career acting in front of the camera ( for every DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN and DICK TRACY, there’s a SHANGHAI SURPRISE and SWEPT AWAY ) will  Madonna find consistent success directing motion pictures?

Let’s take a look at the two timelines ( and heroines ). In 1998 Manhattan, Abbie Cornish plays Wallis AKA Wally ( named by her mother and grandmother after Wallis Simpson ) a young woman sharing a swank high-rise apartment with her wealthy surgeon hubby. Wally is taking measures to have a child while her indifferent spouse spends hours away from her ( hospital business ). She’s drawn back to Southeby’s auction house ( her former employer ) where several items from the Windsor estate are on display prior to a major auction event. There Wally also strikes up a friendship with one of the new security guards, Russian born Evgeni ( Oscar Isaac ). Interwoven through this are flashbacks to the life of the real Wallis Simpson ( Andrea Riseborough ). When we first meet her she’s being beaten by her brutish first husband. Later she’s traveling with her second hubby Ernest and introduced to Edward ( James D’Arcy ), the next in line to the British throne. They meet and soon become inseperable as Ernest steps aside. This causes a huge scandal and Edward abdicates ( his famous ” woman I love” radio speech ). The couple spend the rest of the lives together, traveling the globe while in exile from Great Britain.

Such is the film’s meager plot. Like Clint Eastwood’s J EDGAR, the movie would’ve been much improved and more compelling by staying with one timeline or story. Just as 1998 picks up some momentum, boom-we’re back in 1936. At times the ladies pop in and meet ( Wally turns down a NYC corner and there’s Mrs. Simpson ). Often the film seems like ” lifestyle porn ” ( look at that car! The furnishings! The gowns! ). Madonna’s camera lovingly zooms in on every detail when it’s not spinning around the opulent rooms with one of the characters. Rapid cuts and changes in film stock attempt to liven up the party scenes too frequently. And I hate to be a prig, but the constant smoking, for gosh sakes!! The first shot of Edward is him waltzing with a butt hanging out of his mouth! Inches from his dance partner’s face! Yuchh! I know it was fashionable then, but now’s it’s just gross!  Things are not much better in the modern story. Perhaps that’s the reason for the 1998 setting, years before Mayor Bloomberg banished smokers to the street corners. I mean Evgeni’s chain-smoking in the video monitor rooms. And what kind of security is he?! He gazes silently as Wally fondles almost everything in the prized collection! The actors do what they can with these stock roles. The women are noble sufferers while they men are either violent brutes, affable cuckholds, ” cling-y” royals, or exotic, smouldering hunks. Riseborough and D’Arcy model classic fashions while recreating scenes better told in THE KING’S SPEECH. We never really get to know this woman who was the ultimate upwardly mobile traveler. I won’t go into the campy, cringe-inducing scene with her entertaining the Duke near the end of his life ( at least we see that he’s hooked up to several tubes, paying the price for his carton a day habit ). Cornish seems to be in a fog while Isaac tries to be sensitive and sexy ( the two actors worked previously together in SUCKER PUNCH. Well, third time’s the charm! ). Oh and did I mention that Evgeni’s a reader and a widower! A movie dream date! W.E. is a laboriously paced cinematic endurance test. Madonna may be a gifted film maker, but her talent is not on display here. This movie is literally style over substance, all that’s missing is Robin Leach screaming out the prices of the props.

Lost HUNGRY HOBOS Disney Film Found In England; Mickey Mouse Prototype To Be Auctioned December 14

HUNGRY HOBOS’ FEATURES OSWALD THE RABBIT –
THE PROTOTYPE FOR MICKEY MOUSE

The only known copy of the Disney film HUNGRY HOBOS, which was previously recorded as lost, has been found in a social history film archive in Herefordshire, UK and is to feature in the Entertainment Memorabilia auction on 14th December 2011 at Bonhams in Los Angeles, USA. The film features Oswald The Lucky Rabbit and Peg Leg Pete and is estimated to sell for $30,000-40,000.

The character of Oswald was created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks for a series of cartoons introduced in 1927. After the “Alice Comedies” were finished, Disney signed a contract with Universal Studios to produce a new series for George Winkler and Charles Mintz. The first production featuring Oswald, “Poor Papa,” was rejected by Universal as the production and look of Oswald was deemed unsatisfactory. The second, “Trolley Troubles,” with a younger-looking Oswald, effectively began the series and it became a great success, with Walt Disney overseeing some twenty six titles. “Hungry Hobos” was released in May 1928 and is one of a number of the series that has been thought “lost.”

In 1928 Disney approached Mintz for a budget increase but Mintz countered with a demand for a cut, stating that he had already negotiated with most of Disney’s then employees to sign a revised contract. Disney refused Mintz’s demand and disassociated himself from the Oswald series. Iwerks and several others stuck with Disney and it was during this period that Disney and Iwerks produced the character of Mickey Mouse – a slightly altered Oswald – and the most iconic of Disney’s creations.

Stephanie Connell of Bonhams Entertainment Memorabilia department comments, HUNGRY HOBOS an incredible find, a lost masterpiece and a cartoon with a unique and vital place in animation history.”

Comprising a 16mm double perforated celluloid acetate positive print, silent, probably dating from around its distribution date of late 20s/early 30s, total running time 5 minutes, 21 seconds and 2 frames at a running speed of 24 frames per second.

Huntley Film Archives is a social history film archive, based in Herefordshire. They recently re-discovered the film and when they realised its significance they decided to sell it, and will devote the proceeds to their collection of 80,000 films, which are badly in need of restoration.

Amanda Huntley of Huntley Film Archives comments, “When we checked this film we couldn’t quite believe our eyes. For an archive, finding a lost masterpiece is incredible – you just don’t think it will happen to you. We are excited and delighted to offer this gem to animation aficionados and collectors.”

The Weinstein Company’s W.E. Trailer Debuts

Here’s a look at the trailer for Madonna’s W.E., a tale about the search for true love in the modern world, viewed through the prism of one of history’s most fabled romances. (via moviefone.com)

Having collected more than a few books (and the definitive 1980 miniseries) on the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, I was fortunate to have a British uncle who was invited to Sotheby’s for the 1998 auction. As you may ascertain from the two images, it’s easy for me to relate and understand Madonna’s passion for the subject matter.

Sotheby’s auctioned off some 40,000 items from the couple’s collection, including the desk upon which the king signed his abdication in 1936. The table ultimately went to an anonymous bidder for $415,000 – eight times the presale value. The auction’s top seller was a portrait of the Prince of Wales by Sir Alfred Munnings which fetched $2.3 million. The nine-day auction of the contents of the Paris home of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor brought in about $23 million.

Synopsis:

The year is 1998, and Manhattan is abuzz with anticipation about the upcoming auction of the estate of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. But the auction is far more than a diversion for Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish), a transplanted Southerner trapped in an unhappy and abusive marriage. Transfixed by the exquisite artifacts of the Windsors’ lives, Wally becomes obsessed with the love story of Wallis Simspon (Andrea Riseborough), the chic, charismatic American who captured the heart of King Edward VIII (James D’Arcy). As she learns more about the sacrifices Wallis made in choosing to be with Edward, Wally finds the courage to follow her own heart and create her own happiness.

Starring Andrea Riseborough, Natalie Dormer, Abbie Cornish, Annabelle Wallis, Oscar Isaac, Katie McGrath, James D’Arcy, and Richard Coyle, W.E. opens December 9 in New York and Los Angeles.

Synopsis:

W.E. tells the story of two fragile but determined women – Wally Winthrop and Wallis Simpson – separated by more than six decades.  In 1998, lonely New Yorker Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish) is obsessed with what she perceives as the ultimate love story: King Edward’s VIII’s abdication of the British throne for the woman he loved, American divorcée Wallis Simpson.  But Wally’s research, including several visits to the Sotheby’s auction of the Windsor Estate, reveals that the couple’s life together was not as perfect as she thought. Weaving back and forth in time, W.E. intertwines Wally’s journey of discovery in New York with the story of Wallis (Andrea Riseborough) and Edward (James D’Arcy), from the glamorous early days of their romance to the slow unraveling of their lives in the decades that followed.

A Taste Of Madonna’s W.E.

On Sept. 1st, W.E. premiered out of competition at the 68th Venice Film Festival with the film’s stars and director, Madonna, in attendance. The “Material Girl” hit the red carpet before greeting a flurry of photographers and reporters at the press conference.

Unfortunately, the film’s reception wasn’t as enthusiastic. In his review of Madonna’s film, Guy Lodge from In Contention called it “irredeemably silly, self-admiring ode to life, love and all the fabulous bed linens in between.” With that in mind, check out this clip of W.E.
